The most challenging experience I had in soccer occurred during my junior year of high school. I realized that we had many senior players in my team, and while I was convinced about my capability to get more playing time, I spent most of my matches on the bench. I trained as hard as I could, yet I could not get noticed, and I literally became invisible to my teammates and coach. My coach’s treatment contributed to my loss of confidence in my performance, for the first time in my life, I doubted whether I was good enough, yet I realized something much more crucial during this period: you could neither rely on yourself for excellence nor on other people for defining your worth, because if things did not happen the way I wanted, I could certainly take matters into my own hands.
But everything changed during my senior year. I had something to prove, so I received the captaincy. But we didn't start like we wanted. Things were tough, and we just didn't click. But once I moved to center back, things changed for me, for my teammates, for all of us. It was like we had a whole new team. We were finally winning matches, our spirits were high, and we had regained the confidence we'd lacked. And we received MVP honors for me at the end of the season for my contributions to turning our season around. Of course, we also made it to states, getting knocked out in the first round, but after the way we'd begun, just getting there was an incredible achievement for us.
Soccer has taught me leadership, perseverance, and discipline through these experiences. I have discovered how to lead, how to remain composed under difficult circumstances, and how to push forward, even in situations not in my favor. These attributes have made me the person I have become: someone with no quit in me, someone who matures under pressure, and someone who strives to support those around me.
I intend to major in accounting and ultimately become a CPA. By receiving this scholarship, I will gain the financial assistance I need in regard to pursuing my goal, which will not put any more pressure on my family. I will then be able to solely concentrate on my studies while being able to utilize the skills I have accomplished from playing soccer to thrive in my chosen profession. By acquiring this award, I will finally be able to move forward to pursue what I have strived for.
Bick First Generation Scholarship
When I reflect on the fact that I am the first in my family to attend college, I think of my parents. They immigrated to this country as individuals of no means, whose motivation was hope and effort. They've always had the desire to attend college, but it has never been an option, as they work tirelessly daily to make opportunities available for me, where they didn't have the same chance. The sacrifice they make every day instills in me a sense of responsibility, but also drives me to succeed.
I had to learn everything by trial and error growing up. College applications, financial aid, scholarships, everything was foreign to me, and I didn't know where to turn in my family for guidance. In addition, I attended school while working part-time jobs in order to help out in my family, which has helped me understand the importance of time management, staying focused, and always finding ways to move forward, no matter the difficulties.
I am studying accounting because I enjoy working with figures, problem-solving, and assisting people in understanding complex issues. My goal is to obtain my CPA certification as a professional accountant so that I can help families and companies make informed financial choices. I also hope to prove my parents’ efforts were not in vain. I aim to use the chances my parents strived so hard to provide me with to make a difference, as well as open up opportunities for other people who wouldn't have the same chances as I do to navigate through issues the way that I can, having had the advantages that I've had.
Receiving this scholarship would give me the chance to focus on my education fully and take full advantage of opportunities to reach my goals. It would ease the financial pressure of student loan debt and allow me to explore internships, learn from experienced accountants, and develop skills I would need to succeed in my future career. Instead of worrying about how to balance long work hours with my classes, I could dedicate more time to mastering my coursework and connecting with mentors who can guide me as I work toward becoming a CPA.
But the most important reason of all for me, this scholarship will affirm that every late night, challenge, and sacrifice my family made didn't go to waste. To me, being a first-generation student doesn't just represent me being the first in my family to do so; it has a way deeper feeling. I can carry my parents' dreams with me that they didn't get the chance to do themselves, which I know is what they've always wanted the best for me and my siblings. It means taking steps forward even though the path ahead might be unclear and uncertain. I also want to use the opportunities I've learned to help families like mine and others in my community who are facing the same challenges I've faced, so they can reach their goals like I intend to do
