It's not everywhere that you see a black woman pursuing a major in engineering, but it is not because we aren't capable, but due to barriers. However, in my position as a minority in a field that doesn't have many that look like me, I believe I can truly help shape our future. In light of events surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement and people in power, such as police, we have observed obscene cruelty. It was heartbreaking to see another black person dead at the hands of those we look to as defense. George Floyd's case was especially grotesque because the video of his unfortunate and cruel passing was recorded and shared rapidly. Amid a global pandemic, it was hard to deal with, and it heavily impacted my mental health. However, Breonna Taylor's saddens me the most as a woman, because she was not heard. There are so many systems in place that silence our people, and it's very frustrating to see. Many times I felt hopeless and like I could not do anything to help. But I can, and I want to use my major and the skills I pick up to help make America a better place for all black people, especially black women and those part of the LGBTQA+ community. I'm interested in Computer Systems Engineering, a major that includes electrical engineering and computer science. Before entering the university I currently attend, I was not sure what major I would pursue. I had computer science in mind because I enjoyed the work that came with it however, that was it. But with the addition of electrical engineering, I am a little more sure of what field I want to work in. So far, the courses related to electrical engineering have piqued my interest, and I am looking forward to learning more. As mentioned before, I want to use my skills in going after this major to give back and to help my community. Whether it is improving the current criminal justice system in place or working on technology that further protects us from unnecessary deaths, I want to contribute my knowledge in a meaningful way. While I am aware that we are still a long way from a perfect world for black people, I feel it would make me satisfied to contribute to that ideal. I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I can study at a university and pursue my goals in life, so I want to use it to the best of my ability. Thus, I will take every opportunity to get to these dreams so, I am in a position where assisting my community is not just a faraway dream.
