      I have not made a decision as to what college or university I want to attend, but I did apply to Howard University and Spelman. And I have received admission from both institutions. I believe I might attend an HBCU because I am a young African American woman who wants to expand her education in an environment that is not racist but is also filled with people who share similar experiences as you. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established during a time in U.S. history when segregation was legal and black Americans were not allowed to attend predominantly white institutions. HBCUs were founded to provide access to higher education for black Americans and have played a critical role in shaping the United States' history and culture. HBCUs have produced some of the most influential leaders in the United States, including Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., and Oprah Winfrey. They continue to provide access to higher education for many Black Americans, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and offer a supportive and inclusive environment for students. HBCUs also promote black culture and traditions and provide opportunities for research and innovation that benefit society as a whole. Today, HBCUs face challenges such as limited funding and declining enrollment, but they remain an important part of the United States' higher education system and continue to provide opportunities for many students. And because of the limited funding HBCUs face, it is the one reason why I have not disclosed the idea of attending a PWI.
