Heart of Service Scholarship – In Memory of Officer Katelyn Tully
Katelyn's legacy and devotion to compassion, kindness, and integrity will live on within the continued lives of not only myself but the many others impacted by her. Throughout my childhood and early teen years, I have seen the good and bad of healthcare. I had two grandparents with cancer; I watched the chemo be the worst treatment but also watched how appreciative of the medical staff my grandparents and family members were. This level of appreciation stuck with me; I knew I wanted to be the kind, loving nurse that my grandparents raved about.
I started my tough journey into figuring out my future in my freshman year Biomedical Science class. I had my heart set on anesthesiology because of the big checks I knew would come with it. However, my sophomore year of high school comes along, and I am finally old enough to apply for an internship. With the help of my internship coordinator, I applied for a hands-on learning opportunity at Parkland Medical Center through HCA Healthcare. I went through the application, interview, and onboarding process and began my internship my junior year. I started my experience in a freestanding emergency room in Plaistow, New Hampshire. I saw many different things while also forming meaningful connections with the many staff members I met. As my internship concluded I applied again for the spring semester and was placed in Radiology at PMC. During this time, I was required to gather 10 handwashing audits a shift and in my route around the hospital I had a conversation with an older gentleman who seemed as though he needed someone to talk to. As our conversation concluded he asked if I would come back to see him the next time, I was there, which I promised to do. In my second visit, he told me the disheartening news that in order to treat what was keeping him admitted he would need to stop a medication that was keeping his heart functioning. I was practically told at 16/17 years old that there was nothing anyone could do for this man and he knew that. This was the deciding factor that I wanted to be a nurse to be that person for people like him who needed someone to talk to. I continued with a third internship becoming a representative and leader for the new interns helping to run our intern orientations. I was then placed, again, at the freestanding emergency room and was able to see that the connections I had formed over a year ago left a lasting impact on the staff where I continued to have heartfelt conversations with patients and families.
I am hoping to complete nursing school and become an ER nurse until I meet the requirements to become a med-flight nurse. I plan to pursue this career because after seeing people at their worst in the hospital I wanted to be the person that could be there for people at the absolute worst before they even make it inside the walls of a hospital. I have always had a genuine love for the care of others; it started out as a passion for veterinary medicine and eventually transitioned into my love for human medicine. I strive to not only do no harm but to show the empathy I know I have and be the nurse patients and families rave about for months and years to come.
