Bio

As a Master of Communication in Digital Media major from the University of Washington, I hope to bring exponential skills into the real world by providing human development and goals to ensure strengths upon other communities. To understand, evaluate, and participate in the development of effective intervention, prevention, and health promotion strategies and programs for individuals, small groups, and communities. Communication is how we interact with individuals on a day to day basis. There are countless ways to communicate; we communicate through our voices, phones, languages, and more. For me, I communicate with photography, where I tell my story through my perspective. Photography has no limits; it makes me escape from the world I live in, and picture new possibilities. Personally, I let my photography do the storytelling for what I’m feeling. When you look through the lens you only see what you choose to capture. This world that we live in is surrounded by digital media and is filled with technology that enhances our future for the better. I have a mission to connect people around the world, and better utilize technology to relate to each other. My vision is to build an environment where individuals from many different backgrounds come together to create innovative ideas to change the world. I strongly believe that I am a good match for this graduate program because I am creative, motivated, and collaborative. These are some of the key characteristics of Communications Leadership.

I hope to enhance my storytelling skills while continuing to use my creative skills to share moving visual creations with others. Being in this program will challenge me to get involved with other communities and to advocate for people who are marginalized. I believe this program will show me a different view on engaging people of diverse backgrounds. If I am admitted to the program, I will bring a psychological perspective to the table and will shed light on people's perspectives and intellects. As a graduate of the program, I would promote the representation of people who are unnoticed. I also want to spread the message of giving back to people who are less fortunate and to give them a platform where they can be seen. My dream is to collaborate with top companies such as Nike, Amazon, and Microsoft and spread a meaningful message to a worldwide audience that everyone can benefit from. I believe by being in the MCDM program I can achieve these goals and become a leader. The Bachelor of Arts in Community Psychology degree that I have obtained will bring key values and approaches to my participation in this program. Community psychology works for hand and hand with Communications because of the many shared similarities, such as engaging communities and valuing quality of life. With how fast this world is moving, we see a staggering amount of media and content being created. My career aspiration is to bring back quality content to individuals. Being a First-generation American, I have always been taught to never take anything for granted and to embrace every opportunity that comes our way. My parents left Nigeria to better my future to achieve opportunities here in the United States. I know I can’t tell my parents’ story, however, I would like to share the struggles that they went through to put me here. Life in Nigeria wasn’t easy for my parents, they came from poverty and the corrupted government. If I get into the University of Washing Bothell, I will be the first person in the family to attend a four-year university. When I was born with a blood deficiency called Sickle Cell Anemia, it was difficult for my parents and I. We had to go through a series of doctor’s visits to ensure my safety. Although there is no cure for Sickle Cell Anemia, it does not define me as a person, nor does it stop me from completing my academic dream. However, I have been struggling academically for the past few quarters. That is because I did not have a clear vision of what I wanted my academic future to look like. I took classes just to take them without having an attended goal at the end. After I went to the Student of Color Conference I had an eye-opening experience that changed my life and my way of thinking. I prioritize school now because I have the goal to study Society, Ethics & Human Behavior along with a minor in Public Health. My goal is to bring help to people who are less fortunate and to give people a chance. The reason why want to pursue my education in this field is to give everyone that I interact with an experience of kindness, engagement, courage, and motivation. Communication is how we interact with individuals on a day to day basis. There are countless ways to communicate; we communicate through our voices, phones, languages, and more. America has this propaganda that shows that it is a diverse place to live in, however it shows differently when actually living in these communities. Social structures in America have been altered because the way our policing all system has shaped our society. There is still racial profiling racial discrimination, and other problematic issues that we face here in America. There is too much social conservatism within our communities and it’s an issue because people aren’t getting the same treatment of white people. Critical multiculturalism is the addressing of inequalities in social intuitions and communities. There has been a flaw with these concepts because I have there is no representations of other races. It has only been white people being in charge of these social institutions because there hasn’t been any multiracial representation, so the systems are always going to cater to the most privileged race which is white people The start of the tension is the lack of communication Between the dominate groups and the minority groups. Things are always changing with everything social and it’s hard for people to keep up, so people are going to stick to what they know. Social conservatism exists in this article because of the way people have on their own perspective on a subject. This brings me back to our final definition, and that is public sphere. This is important because this term is the term that everyone needs to know. Whether you are black, white, Asian or you are male or female, low income, high income, people need to understand that every single individual had their own experiences and their own struggles. Some struggles more than others. However, if people came together and discuss this issue in a calmly manor. It’s the ideology of coming together and bringing up dialogue about topics that usually get talked about. The main point is the coming together, because we are so divided as a country. I feel like I’m order for change to even happen, I think we all need to have an idea of a public sphere. When talking about my social history, I was taught growing up with certain disciplines and warning when know about the world. My parents were my biggest influence talking about how the world was not a bucket of roses. My dad always told me to “always watch your surroundings” he was saying that because I am an African American leaving in the united states. there for he was implying that people will look at me differently in this world. Which is sad for me because I thought everyone is treated equally. At least I thought the point of public schools was. However, public schools failed me when I was being discriminated when I was playing on the playground in 5th grade. Ever since then, I see the world now as if it was against me because of that incident early in my child hood. After that I started hanging out with people who looked like me or looked similar to me. I started hanging out with people that fit my type of identities regardless of Gender, class, Ethnicity/Race. I started to see other people’s cultural backgrounds and learning new things from people around me. Soon after that, I started sharing my own experience to people that were close to me also sharing my perspective on things. I felt like I was truly engaging with people when we all talked about our backgrounds and differences.

Throughout my life there’s been many hardships that I have been through. Some of these hardships are good and some are bad. However, these hardships shaped me to become who I am today and has also taught me many lessons that I have experienced too to lead up to this last and final essay that I’m writing in my undergrad at University of Washington Bothell. Before I got into University of Washington, I had to understand what it’s like to be a college student so before that. I went to Edmonds Community college taking classes that I was interested in. Although UWB was the “true” college experience it taught me a different level of maturity before getting in to my dream school. I never saw myself as being a college student at a University. As a person growing up with parents that migrated from Nigeria it was hard for them to adapt in America. My dad didn’t go to college however, my mom did. Both my parents inspired me to go to college because it would better my life. With my parents being my guardian angels throughout this process and put me in a place where I can tell my story not just to my parents for everyone to the world. Being African-American in the United States is hard because we face a lot of difficulties adapting to this society. However, that didn’t stop me from getting into a University that I knew would change my life forever. This portfolio is for anyone who comes across my achievements at University of Washington. The main audience is to the younger generations of minority groups who don’t have the motivation or opportunities to go to a university. This is also for my friends and family who supported me through all my hardships getting into this college. Everything that happened before my college career and during my college career shaped me to the person and why I am today writing this essay. There is nothing more than I want to inspire people who don’t feel motivated or don’t have to drive to go to university. A chapter in my life where I felt that ethnic-cultural socialization impacted me was how I perceive diversity presently is growing up in a majority white school but, living in an area with diversity. More specifically, high school where I felt the most impact. Growing up with a different skin color than other people has really shaped the person I am today. I would say that high school and home life during this chapter was most impactful because, I finally was old enough to understand the diversity of our world. Growing up in an all-white high school made me realize how my time away from home (spent at school) showed that my perceptions and attitudes were changing. At the age I was in high school, it was easy to understand that white people were showing me the path to success. Never assuming it was the wrong way, more that the high school wasn’t diverse, and this was the only way I knew. However, at times I felt that it washed away cultural background from home because I was one of the few people of color at the school. Therefore, I began to naturally adapt to their culture (perceptions, values, attitudes). In class, we defined Ideology as a system of ideas and ideals, especially of one that forms that basis of economy and political theory. My initial goal coming out of the UWB was to get my Bachelors in community psychology. Was I taking classes that were related to the major which made me think how I should interpret things differently? I was learning about how to interact with certain behaviors inside of school and outside of school. I also learned about our system of oppression in America and how it is slowly getting higher and higher. These concepts and these tools that I’m learning is going to help me with my future work. UWB is preparing me too shed light for those who don’t understand the knowledge that I acquired. My future goal is to help people who don’t have a voice and to speak out loud. I want to be the voices that people can relate to. I would like to be a guiding light to people who are in the dark. By that, I hope I can help give knowledge to people who aren’t educated. Being a second generation American and my family coming from Lagos Nigeria, I have always been taught to never take anything for granted and to embrace every opportunity that comes our way. Life in Nigeria was not so easy for my parents, they came from poverty and corrupted government. My parents left Nigeria to better my future and to achieve opportunities here in the United States. Communication is how we interact with individuals on a day to day basis. There are countless ways to communicate; we communicate through our voices, phones, languages and more. For me, I communicate with photography, where I tell my story through my perspective. Photography has no limits; it makes me escape from the world I live in, and picture new possibilities. Personally, I let my photography do the storytelling for what I’m feeling. When you look through the lens you only see what you choose to capture. I want to engage certain emotions to the audience to whom I’m presenting. What I hope to gain from the MCDM program is to improve my ability to communicate with all different kinds of individuals. I also want to spread the message of giving back to people who are less fortunate, and to give them a platform where they can be seen. My dream is to collaborate with top companies such as Nike, Amazon and Microsoft, and spread a meaningful message to a worldwide audience which everyone can benefit from. I believe by being in the MCDM program I can achieve these goals and become a leader. The Bachelor of Arts in Community Psychology degree that I have obtained will bring key values and approaches to my participation in this program.
