Growing up on the Umatilla Indian Reservation was such a meaningful experience that truly shaped who I am today. This reservation, nestled in the Pacific Northwest, is where the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla tribes come together as the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR). Being raised in this community gave me a strong connection to my cultural roots, a deep sense of belonging, and a better understanding of the unique challenges and strengths of Native American life. One of the things that impacted me the most about growing up on the reservation was the importance placed on preserving and honoring our tribal traditions and history. From a young age, I was surrounded by tribal ceremonies, stories passed down through generations, and efforts to keep our language alive. Learning about our traditional ways and beliefs filled me with pride for my heritage and a profound respect for the wisdom of our elders. These cultural lessons have guided me and shaped my values in a significant way. Living on the reservation also showed me the power of community and belonging. The bonds between tribal members are deep, and there is a strong sense of togetherness and support within the community. Whether it was coming together for traditional events, helping out neighbors, or standing united during tough times, the unity on the reservation was truly powerful. This sense of community gave me a feeling of safety and connection that taught me the importance of relationships and caring for others. Growing up on the Umatilla Indian Reservation also opened my eyes to the challenges that Native American communities face. Historical traumas, social inequalities, and economic hardships have left lasting impacts on tribal members, creating complex struggles that many residents must deal with. Despite these hardships, I witnessed the incredible resilience, strength, and determination of my people in the face of adversity. These experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of compassion, empathy, and a commitment to fighting for social justice. But amidst the challenges, living on the Umatilla Indian Reservation also highlighted the incredible strengths and resilience of Native American culture. The rich traditions, spiritual connection to the land, and strong sense of identity that define tribal life are sources of empowerment and inspiration for many community members. These cultural treasures have played a crucial role in fostering pride, self-confidence, and resilience among tribal youth, empowering them to navigate the complexities of the world while staying true to their heritage. In sum, growing up on the Umatilla Indian Reservation was a profound and impactful experience that continues to shape who I am today. The deep ties to my cultural heritage, the sense of community and belonging, and the awareness of the challenges and strengths of Native American life have all left a lasting imprint on my identity and values. This experience has given me a deep appreciation for my roots, a strong commitment to social justice, and a genuine sense of empathy and understanding towards others.
