I find a quote that motivational to me is "Never stop learning because life never stops teaching" by Proverb. This expired me to pursue my future goal in education as a Math major to become a math teacher because I love to teach and learn new ways of making the students more comfortable to learn. I love teaching because I like it when students become more confident and excited after learning something new. The reason I want to be a math teacher is to help students like me, who are new to the United States and in learning English. I know Karen students like me struggle with the process of learning English and get frustrated at math word problems. I want to help them understand math and feel good about learning new things. I went to Travis Middle school last year for IPET (Instructional Practices in Education and Training), a program that taught me principles of effective teaching and training practices. I practiced teaching ESL English and ESL Math. I helped the students to better understand their assignments by explaining the work to them patiently. I also created some of the lessons for them on special holidays. I designed lesson activities that included pumpkins, spelling out words, and making Valentines together. I make math concepts and word problems easier to understand by drawing a picture and giving a short explanation of the concepts of problems. I am passionate about learning and teaching math, and I want to share the joy I feel with others. I also want to be a teacher who inspires students and builds trust with their families. It is hard in Myanmar to attend school in view of the fact that it costs a lot of money to go to school and graduate. Most Karen parents have a difficult time trusting the schools in the United States because they do not speak English very well. They also did not attend school, so they do not always understand the requirements for their students. I would like to help both the students and the parents understand how important school is and how the students can have many opportunities in their future if they finish and succeed at school. I am best able to help because I am already familiar with the struggles and challenges that Karen students and parents face, and I can act as a bridge between teachers and students. I understand Karen culture and history, which helps me to be a better teacher for these students.

I am from a Southeast Asian country known as Myanmar(formerly Burma). My culture is Karen. The Karen culture is a group of people who lived at the borders of Myanmar and Thailand for many years. The Karen people had to find new places to live when Burma became Myanmar in the 1970s and Myanmar soldiers and Karen soldiers were in conflict over land My people have moved to Thailand and many have moved to the United States over the last twenty years. I am multilingual and I can speak Karen, Mon, Burmese, and English. Burmese is my first language and I am fluent in it due to growing up in Myanmar. I had lived in the Young Poe for about 11 years. I went to Malaysia for about two years to be able to immigrate and I came to the United States of America on January 28, 2016. My family is a small family of four, my mom, dad, and younger sister. I started my education in the United States as a 7th-grade student in Travis Middle School. I am currently a Senior at Palo Duro High School. My educational goals are to be a Math Teacher in Elementary School or High School. I love to teach and learn new ways of making the students more comfortable to learn. The reason I want to be a Math Teacher is to help students like me in learning English and new to the United States. I plan to become a United State citizen and be the teacher that supports all my students to show them how much they are valued and how they are the future generation. In ten years. I also plan to improve my personal speaking skills because sometimes my teachers cannot understand what I am trying to communicate with them. I wonder if it's my accent or if I am not using the correct wording. I plan to practice and continue learning and improving my English skills so I can be a great employee and teacher. I plan to be more active in the communities that help those in need. I am currently on the student council and help students in my community with their schoolwork. I feel that I would be a good candidate for a scholarship because I plan to continue working hard in my schooling and progress to becoming a teacher and continuing to help those around me.

I also have had the experience of learning how to teach others from my ESL teacher who is from Travis Middle School. When I presented my project at the TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educator) competition, I noticed that the judges had difficulty understanding what I was trying to say. I felt some embossment because of my accent, which is sometimes hard for other adults or teachers to understand. I believe that communication is the first skill that I need to improve in order to improve other skills. The most important part of being an employee is at least being able to understand my boss when he or she is giving me a task and to reply back with understandable speaking skills. After I improve my personal speaking skill, I can also show my parents that I feel good about learning new things. I can achieve my career goal without any worry about being embarrassed to talk to my coworkers. I can show other Karen parents that have a difficult time trusting the schools in the United States because they do not speak English very well. They also did not attend school, so they do not always understand the requirements for their students. I know things that are accomplished by the challenge that will give me the result that I hope to get with that I can overcome this challenge and go on to achieve my goals for a better tomorrow for my community.
