Putting My Health First: A Turning Point Toward My Future It was Thanksgiving Day in 2012, my sister’s 21st birthday, when everything changed. My mother was in a devastating car accident that left her in a coma. At the time, I was a college student studying veterinary medicine, juggling coursework and part-time jobs. But after the accident, I dropped everything to become her caregiver. I spent months navigating hospital systems, disability paperwork, and the emotional toll of watching someone I love fight for her life. Before I left school, I had already started therapy to manage the stress of being a first-generation college student. But after the accident, I put my own mental health on hold. I told myself I had to be strong—for my mom, my sister, and everyone who depended on me. What I didn’t realize was that ignoring my own needs would eventually catch up with me. Years later, after working in manufacturing since 2009, I found myself burned out and emotionally drained. I was working full-time, still helping my mother, and trying to hold everything together. That’s when I made a conscious decision to prioritize my mental and emotional health again. I returned to therapy, began journaling, and carved out time for reflection and rest. I also revisited my dream of finishing my degree; this time in a field that had become deeply personal to me: Occupational Safety and Health. This experience taught me that caring for others starts with caring for yourself. I learned how to set boundaries, ask for help, and recognize the signs of burnout before they became overwhelming. These lessons have shaped how I approach my work as a safety coordinator. I don’t just focus on physical hazards; I advocate for mental wellness and emotional resilience in the workplace. I understand how trauma and stress can affect performance, and I bring empathy and lived experience to every safety plan I create. Now, after years of putting others first, I’ve re-enrolled in college and am about to begin my academic journey again. I’m doing so with a renewed sense of purpose. I’ve learned how to manage my time, protect my energy, and stay focused on long-term goals. I’m not just pursuing a degree; I’m building a future rooted in strength, compassion, and the belief that healing is possible. Making my health a priority didn’t just help me survive—it helped me grow. And that growth is the foundation I’m using to shape a future where I can support others, advocate for safety, and lead with heart.
    Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
Wearable safety technology stands out as a compelling convergence of innovation and human-centered design, particularly in sectors where risks are high and traditional safety measures have often fallen short. Drawing from my experience in the chemical processing industry, I have directly observed the significant impact of smart helmets, sensor-equipped vests, and advanced wristbands. These devices do not merely represent technological progress; they actively monitor vital signs, detect falls, enable real-time location tracking, and identify exposure to hazardous gases or extreme temperatures. On several occasions, I have witnessed these innovations intervene to prevent what could have been serious accidents, in some cases even saving lives. What I find most inspiring about wearable safety technology is its dual capacity for both empowerment and protection. For workers in hazardous environments, these devices provide reassurance and immediate support. For professionals tasked with workplace safety, wearable technology introduces a proactive approach—shifting from reactive responses to data-driven, preventive strategies. As a woman in a predominantly male field, I view technology as more than just a tool for operational improvement; it is an instrument of inclusion. My ambition is to advocate for wearable technology as a means to establish safer, more equitable workplaces, especially in sectors where women and other marginalized groups have historically been underserved. This commitment extends beyond regulatory compliance; it is grounded in ethical responsibility, empathy, and a deep commitment to safeguarding all individuals, not just fulfilling procedural requirements. I firmly believe that technology should benefit those whose voices are often marginalized. This conviction underpins my ongoing dedication to advancing and advocating for safety-focused technological solutions. Ultimately, progress in this field must be measured not only in metrics or statistical performance, but in the preservation of human dignity, the exercise of foresight, and the creation of inclusive environments where no one is excluded. Receiving this scholarship would provide crucial support for my continued work at the intersection of safety, technology, and social impact. It would help me pursue a vision where all workers, irrespective of gender or background, are able to thrive in environments founded upon respect and protection.
