Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
Growing up as an immigrant in the United States has shaped my character, values, and long-term goals. My parents sacrificed everything—leaving behind their families, friends, and everything familiar—to give me a chance at a better future. Watching them work tirelessly to build a new life in a country where we had little help has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and purpose. I am driven to make their sacrifices worth it by pursuing success not only for myself, but also for others who come from similar backgrounds.
One of my biggest goals in life is to earn an MBA and use it as a launching pad to achieve financial independence, open doors for others, and eventually give back to my family and community. I envision myself in a leadership role where I can mentor aspiring professionals—especially young immigrants—who may not always see people like themselves in positions of success. I want to be an example of how discipline, perseverance, and dedication can create opportunities, no matter where you start.
This scholarship would make a meaningful difference in my life by lifting some of the financial burden off my family’s shoulders and helping me continue my journey toward earning a business management degree. It will allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial stress that often weighs on students from immigrant families. Every dollar I receive from this scholarship brings me one step closer to graduating, starting a successful career, and eventually repaying my parents for everything they’ve done for me.
One of the most difficult emotional challenges I’ve ever faced was adapting to life in a new country. I had to learn a new language, adjust to a different culture, and deal with the loneliness that comes from being far away from extended family. There were times I felt out of place and overwhelmed. I remember feeling especially lost during my first year of school in the U.S.—not fully understanding what was being taught and struggling to make friends due to the language barrier. That period tested me emotionally, and I felt a deep sense of weakness and insecurity.
But I pushed through. I focused on learning English by reading, watching educational videos, and asking questions whenever I didn’t understand something. I reminded myself daily that I was working toward something bigger than myself. With time, I adapted, my grades improved, and I gained confidence. That experience taught me how to turn emotional hardship into motivation, and it continues to fuel my determination today.
In the long run, I hope to use my education and experience to help others rise above their circumstances, just as I am trying to rise above mine. I want my success to be a symbol of resilience and hope, especially for other young immigrants navigating the same path. This scholarship would not only help me achieve my academic goals but also empower me to build a future where I can give back, lead, and inspire.
Fernandez Scholarship
My whole life I’ve always been pushed to do well in school by my parents. I didn’t realize why until I got to high school and learned of the roles that having good grades and a high GPA have in the opportunities you can get after high school. Some of my goals in life are to earn an MBA, become financially successful, help mentor aspiring professionals, encourage immigrants to chase their dreams as I am trying to do, and repay my parents for all that they’ve done for me. I am very grateful for all of the sacrifices they’ve made to give me a better life than they had. I know it wasn’t easy for them to leave their friends and family behind to come to a new country and start a new life and have to settle down in another country with very little help from people.
Using an MBA I strive to open doors for not only myself but other young professionals. I am determined to pursue a leadership role where I can mentor aspiring professionals, helping them to learn valuable skills needed to succeed in business. I dream of inspiring people, especially those that come from immigrant backgrounds to chase their dreams even in the face of adversity. I want to be an example of how hard work and perseverance can open doors that might seem out of reach. Eventually I would like for my work to have a ripple effect and have a positive impact for not only my own family but also other people who are going through hardships while chasing their dreams. By utilizing my education to create change, I aim to leave behind a legacy of positive change, development, resilience, and hope for both my generation and the next.
As an immigrant I understand that to achieve financial success I must do more than others. Having to learn a new language, assimilate to a new culture, and leaving behind the majority of my extended family were all challenges that I had to persevere through to be the person I am today. Therefore, due to all of the hard work that me and my parents have done to have a better life, I am focused on my goals and committed to achieving success. I dream of the day my whole family and I celebrate my graduation from a university with an MBA. This scholarship will lift a great weight off of our shoulders and help my family and I pursue the next steps towards financially getting my business management degree and chasing my dreams and helping others.
