July 1, 2026 Dear Reader, My name is Edward George Hill. I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Meteorology and Climatology at Ball State University. Nothing brings me greater joy or fulfillment than serving others. Being the hand for the old, the example for the young, the heart for the woman of my life, the soul for the distressed, and the giver to those who have none is the life I strive to live. Nothing lightens my heart more than serving others, and this passion began at a young age. The last six years have provided me with a wealth of service opportunities that I enthusiastically embraced. I owe my first lessons in generosity to my parents, whose unwavering dedication to our family and others taught me to serve faithfully. This led to my own first steps, primarily through my church. Beginning at age nine, I served at Mass almost three times a week. Once I discovered my passion for music, I began singing for church services whenever I was not serving. Later, my pastor asked someone to work with the younger altar servers to improve their skills. I founded a server guild and served as its president for three years. Other religious service has included a trip to Colorado to help an order of monks establish a monastery. Besides religious volunteer work, another area of service has been as a farmhand for a local nonprofit retreat center in Greensburg, Indiana. Called Edelweiss House, it has been transformed over the past four years from conventional farmland into a back-to-nature homestead property, and I have been grateful to help with that work. Along with weekly work during several summers, the property began hosting a conference called the Catholic Land Movement. What began as a 400-person event three years ago has continued to grow. I have helped direct and manage the volunteers since the first event. This year, around 650 people are expected, and I will once again lead the volunteers while serving as Master of Ceremonies. The final area of service is one I have devoted myself to over the past two years: caring for my grandparents and helping operate their dairy farm. I began by driving five hours every weekend to return home to Indiana before heading back to Ohio on Sunday night. Now I stay with them and drive two hours every day during the college semester to attend class before returning for farm work. I milk and feed cows while helping with haymaking and many other farm duties. Looking to the future, I have always dreamed of chasing storms and presenting the weather on television. My desire is to carry forward my love of service by providing accurate forecasts and life-saving information to the public. I am dedicated to achieving excellence while continually pursuing improvement, and my work reflects that commitment. I promise that whatever is invested in me, I will repay through hard work, faithful stewardship, and service to others. I humbly ask you to consider me worthy of this scholarship.
