I have been on the Varsity Cheerleading Squad at my school since 10th grade. My senior year is when my peers voted for me as co-captain of the squad. I took this role very seriously and wanted to represent them the best way I knew how. As the season progressed, many of the members of the squad began to voice their opinions about canceled practices and the direction of the program. As one of their leaders, they wanted me to bring the issues to the Coach with the hope of some resolution. The other captain and myself were met with stern no and negative responses. This was hard for me because our requests were simple. We just wanted to practice. Our Coach had canceled all our practices, but we were still expected to perform at games. Our squad had lost their confidence because there was never an allowed time for us to perfect our skills. Feeling the weight of the squad on my shoulder, and wanting to have the best senior year ever, I went to the school and county leadership. After many emails and difficult conversations with leadership, my squad was not only allowed to practice but our Coach was removed from the position for neglecting duties and responsibilities. This hard decision was needed because I promised my cheer sisters to protect and lead and I believe I did just that. I couldn't just do one experience so here is another experience that shaped me. Throughout my life, I have been heavily involved in my church (Fairfield Baptist Church). If you’re not aware of how the southern baptist church works it embodies Southern hospitality with a whole lot of Jesus. Being the granddaughter of the pastor of the church a lot of opportunities were presented to me but it was up to me to use those opportunities to build my skills and step into leadership roles all with a smile on my face. At Fairfield Baptist Church we have a youth ministry called NXTGEN and I have had the opportunity to not create the vision but to create a team of youth ambassadors to help build the bridge between our older leaders and our future leaders. I have been able to give my peers the voice they so desperately needed. Being at the forefront of this youthful movement has allowed me to see different types of people within this world and cultivate my worldview of what people strive for and hope to pursue. I have seen people of all cultures, financial backgrounds and religions and it has taught me that no matter how different we are there is always common ground which is excellence. If we give our youth a voice we allow our youth to have a space to not only create their relationship with God but soon be future church leaders who will pass the torch to the NXTGEN. As I go through life and meet new people and try to impact this world I hope to inspire others, especially leaders to push for excellence not perfection, not continuity, not a certain standard, not completion but excellence. As I go out into this world, reconstruct my view and find my way I just pray I can continue to be a symbol of excellence. Both of these experiences have created the Emani I am today, a strong, courageous, kind, leader who will fulfill my civic duties.

There are thousands of of core values an individual can take on. Considering each and every person is different, everyone’s core values differ. We may share some qualities with someone else, but we may not sure the exact same qualities with every person within this world. Cora values are what specifically relate to you and your goals. My core values include commitment, integrity, and courage. We have all seen the Wizard of Oz, and one character lacked courage. He was the king of the jungle better known as a lion, but wasn’t equipped with the most powerful thing he needed to be this king of the jungle. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. So, for example, if I’m afraid of failure, but yeah, I still submit this college ship essay I’m being courageous, because in spite of what I’m afraid of I still persevere in complete the task at hand. Courage is a core value because even though that it may be the very last thing you want to face courage equipped you to look for in the eyes and do what you most desire. I was born into a family whose reputation is held to a high standard. As society would call them "stand up people." This brings me to my next core value commitment, which goes hand-in-hand with my need to be courageous. My greatest strength has come from the energy of commitment. It is the spirit of determination and dedication. Commitment is what transforms your promises into reality. I pride myself on being one a person who is reliable. It offers a personal level of security. Humans are limited beings, and we need stability to function. I am sure that not a single soul walking on Earth wants to enter any type of relationship, whether personal or business, with someone who doesn't value commitment. Commitment can be compelling and influence the way you think and act. It is one of the essential principles of success. It is the commitment you made that will help you push through your struggles and achieve excellence in every endeavor. Commitment keeps you going. I remember when I graduated from middle school, my grandfather said to me these next four years were going to shape me into who I would become in life. My grandfather was such a wise man so, much of what he spoke always stuck with me. He always said to me, "act with integrity; integrity is everything." He influenced the reason I choose to live a life with integrity. Integrity is about being your most authentic self. It is a commitment, to be honest, and truthful in every part of your life. Integrity is the foundation of your character, personality, and enhances human potential. As I go out into the world and make sure that I carry my core values in every scenario and situation I’m faced with. Sometimes it gets challenging, holding onto my core values, but I remember the life that I signed up for and the reason I have these core values. They were designed for me to go through life as the best human being I can simply be no matter the obstacle.

Community Service is a great opportunity to make a difference in the area you live in. There are so many ways to volunteer. Some people are given chances to do community service when they need to pay off fines for tickets. Most people simply do because they love getting involved. It’s their way of making the community a cleaner, healthier place. Tutoring kids is one type of community service. I can say from experience teaching kids to learn is a great feeling. I know because I’ve been tutoring kids for almost seven months. You’ll be surprised how it makes you feel. To have one of your students’ parents thank you because there child has never been able to make an “A” in there reading or math class. Just hearing those words lets me know that I am already making a difference. The place that I volunteer at is Oak View Elementary and the children that go there really look up to me. Yes I’m helping them to be able to reach their goals but I’m also teaching them that helping the community can change so many lives. There are many activities that will help the community. Another way that I have experience is picking up trash. This one is very important because you are helping the environment and town that you live in. So why not help your environment to be able to apply for a scholarship. It’s also a fun way to meet people that enjoy making a difference. Picking up trash is one of the most common types of community service. There are so many volunteers a day picking up trash in their neighborhood and all around town. To be able to get involved all you do is call the City Department and they will be glad to guide you where to go so you can help our community. Being awarded this scholarship money will help me get my education, net work, and meet some wonderful people, and do a full circle and volunteer in a more impactful way with us financially, with a foundation, or just a team of individuals who have the same beliefs as I. School is expensive and will only last no more than another decade of my life. Volunteering has a lifetime impact on the people and the community even if it’s a simple coat drive to give to those who lack the proper winter apparel it is an act of kindness and service that they will never forget.

Hello! I am Emani Benton a young African American who has always had a passion for helping people. Like most, I aspire to go to college and achieve the highest heights. As a young African-American female, I am faced with daily challenges, but I persevere through them because I know that I can inspire someone else like me to do the same. I believe that God has a plan for everyone, and we all have a purpose to fulfill, so I'm just striving to fulfill my purpose and impact the world along the way. I know life is precious and we all have a gift and purpose, I just want to fulfill mine thorough giving to those in need within the medical field. I know the field is so broad and there are many living parts but if I dedicate my life to STEM I know I would be fulfilling my purpose. STEM is a field that I believe you can never ever get tired of. There are always new theories, ways of solving things, discoveries, innovation, and each day is new so therefore we must change with the times. I read to them, I help them read, I teach them how to solve math problems, I promote critical, thinking, creativity, and that each and everyone of them can learn as long as they try. I love giving back and I love helping so therefore I believe I am making this world a better place.

I was going to start this essay with a cliché saying "I’ve dreamed of becoming a doctor ever since I was a little girl", but my aspiration and love for this field are bigger than that. Growing up in DeKalb County as a young black girl, I saw many people who look just like me, but who had achieved great things, I’ve seen doctors lawyers, nurses, politicians, chefs, entrepreneurs, technicians, pastors, news anchors, teachers, accountants, and more. When it came to the field of pediatrics, I saw no one that looked like me so I gain interest in becoming a medical doctor to see why no one that looks like me had done it (at least from my point of view). Then, as I grew older and more interested in biology and physiology, I grew a love for not only science but children. I knew I wanted to become a pediatrician after I helped my cousin stop crying after removing a piece of glass from her foot and cleansing the wound properly. I knew that I was destined to not only help others but children specifically, children that looked like me. In the field of pediatrics, there are only 5. 2% of pediatricians that are African-Americans. There are male and female pediatricians so if we split that 5.2% that only leaves 2.6% of pediatricians within the world who are African-American women. Looking at the data that is devastating to hear that in the field that I aspire to be in and the profession that I will succeed in there is less than 5% of people that reflect me. I don’t let this reality scare me, but I let it motivate me and create a fuel that will drive me to not only achieve my goals and dreams within the medical field but inspire a young black little girl somewhere in the world to do the same but to not only follow in my footsteps but to exceed my dreams and aspirations. Not only do I plan on impacting the world by inspiring children, but I want to help all minorities that are under privilege and in need of reliable and great healthcare. Not every child is blessed to be able to go to the doctor for a check-up, so I want to give back to not only my community but other communities in the hope of bringing awareness to child healthcare and mental health to minorities.

In my years of learning and reading, I read a book called "Brown Girl Dreaming" by Jacqueline Woodson. The message that I got from the novel was that you must dream big and push your dream and achieve it despite the challenges that come your way. There are other sub-themes in the novel but that one stuck out to me the most because even though in this world we are all faced with different challenges of different masses, we all have the common goal to achieve a dream. This allows us to connect as humans and to set aside our differences to see that we are all one, with one goal, which is to achieve our dreams.
