Bio

My name is Eyma Agatha Ankh Anwar. I was born in the United States Virgin Islands. My grandmother was born in the Dominican Republic and migrated to the US Virgin Islands. She has always instilled in all of her children to " do good things" and to "value education". She was not able to get a proper education when she was a child and it was important for her to see us achieve what she could not. One day I will fulfill my long-term goal of becoming an entrepreneur. I learned the value of a good education from an early age. Both of my parents instilled the importance of always maintaining the decorum that makes me proud. Being able to gain a college education would start me on the path to finding my greatness. I have a vast amount of goals and aspirations. College is only the beginning for me. I have always had big plans for myself. After college, I would like to pursue a career in real estate and gain the knowledge and criteria necessary to start a realty firm. A business degree is necessary for me to accomplish this. I find my passion for this growing now, more than ever. This scholarship opportunity would have a huge impact on my life. As I navigate my way through college, I am going to show the world what this little Caribbean girl can do!

The most challenging experience in high school I had to overcome was my own ambitions. I transferred to a new school in my sophomore year. The school had a dual high school and college curriculum. I was very excited to begin something new. At North Wake College and Career Academy, five majors were available for me to choose from. I chose IT or Internet Technology. I have always been curious about computers and how they worked. This decision made the most sense to me. During this time, I decided to take College Level English 111. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Later that same year, at the beginning of my junior year, I started my first job. I was a hostess and a food runner at a local Italian restaurant. This was great because I was able to gain a little financial freedom and some independence. I also volunteered weekly at Rex Hospital. I was feeling invincible and looked forward to conquering all my goals. I was very excited about all the new things that we’re starting in my life. My weekly schedule was very grueling. From Monday through Friday, I took two college-level classes and two high school classes. On Fridays, I volunteered at the hospital in the afternoon and worked at the restaurant in the evening. On Sundays, I participated in leadership roles at my Church’s Youth Group. I studied in between all of it. I felt fantastic. Every single activity was something I truly enjoyed. At first, it all seemed doable until I started feeling overwhelmed. My weeks were flying by so quickly. I realized that I was hardly home to spend time with my friends and family. It was getting to be too much. I was no longer enjoying what I did. I was too tired most days to even function. My grades started to slip, which made me feel depressed. I wanted to be successful but was too afraid to give up. I should have made some adjustments along the way because my schedule was too rigorous. I thought I could handle all of it. Unfortunately, I was very wrong. Reaching out to my parents for advice would have helped. Maybe we could have negotiated a plan that would have worked better. I was able to finish out the school year, but my energy level was almost gone. I learned a lot from this experience. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is actually a sign of strength and vulnerability. Learn how to create a balance in everything. Last, but not least, don’t try to do everything all at once. Overall, I learned a lot about myself. This experience has made me wiser.

    "Your Success" Youssef Scholarship
My name is Eyma Anwar and I am a senior at North Wake College and Career Academy in Wake Forest, NC. I am applying for this scholarship award, for assistance with pursuing my education at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. In the fall semester of 2021, I will be a rising freshman with ambitions to major in business management with a concentration in marketing. As an active student in my community, I have had the privilege to exercise leadership skills in the following areas: St. James UMC Youth Praise Band and St. James UMC Youth Group. As the co-leader of the Praise Band, I had the responsibility of organizing musical set selections and being a mentor to peer band members. It was also my duty to coordinate practice times and our band objectives. Oftentimes, I helped to lead special church musical events. I am the current UMC Youth Group President at St. James Methodist Church. My tenure started in the fall of 2020 and ends in summer 2021. I immediately set lofty goals for our group to execute. I led and orchestrated fundraisers, youth activities, and other ministries within the St. James Methodist Church community. Some examples of events we have assembled and participated in were a Churchwide car wash. This affair raised money for trips and other activities for the Youth Group. Another major happening within our group was " Garden Day". Our church has a community garden that we use to feed fellow church members, neighboring homes, and small food shelters. The Youth Group chose a day to start a new planting season. Being the group leader was a very fulfilling responsibility. I am not only the group lead but a proud role model and friend to all 16 members. Besides my leadership roles, I have also participated in a few other volunteer endeavors. I assisted in an afterschool science program at the Daniel Center for Math and Science ( Raleigh, North Carolina) for two years. The age ranges of the students were from 5 to 14 years old. Once a month, I would volunteer to assist with homework duties and teach simple science experiments. The children were always bright and eager to learn. It gave me a sense of accomplishment, to see the look on the students’ faces whenever I came to the center. From 2019- 2020, I was a member of the UNC Rex Hospital VolunTeen Program (Raleigh, North Carolina) While was there, I assisted with basic patient care and staff support. One of my favorite accomplishments was being a part of the Appalachian Service Project in June of 2019. Our Church Youth Group traveled to Nash County, Kentucky, and aided in a home repair project for a family in that community. This was a fulfilling experience. I am passionate about helping people. Community service is not only a wonderful way to get to know the people around you. It also is necessary because so many organizations and individuals need help from folks who are willing to give their time and services for free. Volunteering is much more than something you have to do for school, work, or church, it is something that every person should partake in. People who volunteer bring joy to others and sometimes even change one’s outlook. The world can sometimes feel bleak and scary and often the light in the darkness is a volunteer. I encourage my friends and family to do community service because someday you could be that person looking for a friendly face. Thank you very much for your consideration of my application.

My short-term goal is to earn a bachelor's degree in business management at North Carolina Central University. I need this in order to pursue my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. As with any field of study, I will have to overcome challenges and obstacles. This can be nerve-racking, but I am confident in my abilities to learn and excel. I have always had big plans for myself. After attending NCCU, I would like to pursue a career in real estate and gain the knowledge and criteria necessary to start a realty firm of my own. A business degree is necessary for me to accomplish this. I find my passion for this growing now, more than ever. I will use my platform to promote inclusion in many ways. My business will contribute and partner with non-profit housing organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Homes for American. I also intend on creating outreach programs for the youths of my community. For example, internships, summer camps, and other enrichment opportunities will help to bring young people together. Inclusion is paramount for all communities. This gives everyone a chance to be successful. T

I have been active in my local UMC church, St, James since I was four years old. I attended Kids Club during the school years and Vacation Bible School in the summers. I have spent almost my whole life surrounded by the people in my local Methodist community. The members of my church are so much more than just friends, they are my family. St. James is a small church where everyone knows each other and children grow up together. St. James is a place I feel safe to be myself. I have participated in many children's plays and youth activities over the years. As a young adult in The United Methodist Church I know I can find counsel and guidance from the leaders in my church and the elders that I am close to. I am still very involved in church activities, participating in community service and events happening in our congregation. Growing up in the church has allowed me to become a mentor for the younger children in our community. Being a group leader in VBS and holiday events allows me to watch them grow in their faith as I did when I was young. The best thing about being apart of The United Methodist Church community is how simple it is to invite and welcome new people to worship and learn alongside folks who have been there for a long time. I feel proud and grateful to be part of such a wonderful and welcoming community.

Growing up as a Caribbean-American, I knew from the start I was different and that is how I liked it. I could never fit into one box or category. Everything about me was and is unique. I started my schooling at Friendship Christian School where I learned great values and made lifelong friends. I loved being at the school and planned to graduate from it as well, but soon realized that was not the best plan for me. To my disappointment, my private school life was not as glamorous as I wanted it to be. I was not doing as well in school and needed change. That is when my friend recommended North Wake College and Career Academy. At first, I was upset and terrified I had never been to a different school and all my friends were at Friendship Christian School, but once I heard more about the North Wake College and Career Academy, I became even more excited. North Wake College and Career Academy was a completely different world that I did not even know existed. Finding a school where I had so many opportunities was incredible. I have met fantastic people and made friends I will never forget. Being at NWCCA, I am able to be 100% Eyma every day and grow in an environment where I feel I can succeed. I saw my grades rise and my spirit grow to places I never thought I would reach, allowing myself to achieve that greatness instilled in me. I have taken classes I enjoy and learned life experiences that I will always remember. I am so grateful and humbled to learn from so many incredible people students and teachers alike. I would not trade my experience for the world. This molded my personal development. This scholarship opportunity would enable me to fulfill my short-term goal of earning a bachelor's degree in business management at North Carolina Central University. Besides my leadership roles, I have also participated in other volunteer endeavors. I assisted in an afterschool science program at the Daniel Center for Math and Science for two years. I was a member of the UNC Rex Hospital VolunTeen Program from 2019-2020. While I was there, I assisted with basic patient care and staff support. One of my favorite accomplishments was being apart of the Appalachian Service Project in June of 2019. Our Church Youth Group traveled to Nash County, Kentucky, and aided in a home repair project for a family in that community. This was a fulfilling experience. Thank you very much for your consideration of my application. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
