When I was around nine years old I was put in a rough situation that made my whole life change overnight. I went to my grandma's house to spend the night with my cousin while my parents went on a date. My cousin and I put on a movie while my grandma was making snacks. It was about two hours into the sleepover when the phone started ringing. She picked up the phone and had an expression on her face that still haunts me to this day. I can only remember my brother rushing to get my grandpa while my grandma got the keys to the car and drove off. I later found out that my parents got into a fatal accident that took the life of my dad and left my mom with permanent brain damage. I still remember when the nurse told me that my dad was not strong enough and did not survive. After that, I went to live with my aunt in Indianola. I was told I would be there for only a week because my mom would be better soon. But as time went on that one week turned into a month, which turned into a year. I lived with my aunt, uncle, and 11 cousins (as well as my sister) for two years before I was told I was going to move in with my other aunt in Grimes. I had just finished fifth grade and was ready for the summer. When I moved in with my other aunt I was not used to having only 3 other siblings and living in such a nice environment. My aunt provided me with a good education, support, food, shelter, and most importantly a home. She became my permanent guardian and takes me to visit my mom once and a while. If it was not for my aunt's heart of gold my sister and I would have ended up in foster care. Every time I feel like life is unfair, I think about how the people around me made me into the person I am today. I have been motivated to help others when they are in need because of my aunt's act. I want others to have the chance to feel how I felt when I was given support, that feeling of hope and joy. Not only has my aunt been amazing but so has my uncle. My uncle has been my father figure for 6 years and has been an amazing inspiration to me. He has shown me that hard work does pay off and that you don't need to work 24/7 to be successful. He has gone out of his way to help me get my first job. He even helped me when I wanted a second job. He is like a computer because when I ask him some random question about how something works he can give me the most complicated and detailed answer without looking at a screen. He has been there to help me with my school work and with advice on self-improvement. These two incredible people taught me so many lessons that made me appreciate life and not hold onto the things that I regret or wish I could change. These people made me who I am today.
