Bold Empathy Scholarship
All throughout my school experience, I was very lucky to never go through any sort of bullying. While I am very grateful for that, unfortunately, my best friend was not as lucky. He was always the quiet kid at school and was very shy. He didn't grow up in the greatest environment with his parents as he was physically abused during his childhood. He used to get bullied for not having the latest technological devices such as cellphones like everyone else did and would get laughed at by a majority of classmates. Every time this would happen, I could see the confusion and defeat in his eyes as he continued to shut down for the rest of the day.
I was always taught growing up to treat others how I would like to be treated and I had no tolerance for disrespect such as bullying, especially for things that you can't control. After watching this happen to my best friend, I couldn't sit back and not do anything about it. One day, my fellow classmates proceeded to make fun of him for the way he dressed and the cellphone that he did have at the time. All of the anger that I had built up while watching my friend go through everything that he had, had all come spewing out of my mouth which left them all speechless. Being the one who knew everything going on behind the scenes, I had stuck up for my best friend which lead to the bullies leaving him alone.
I have grown up with a perspective that is, everyone has their own story. Some good, some bad, but you never know what someone is going through and that is why I make sure that I am empathetic to others.
