Everything was going just as planned, as a 14-year-old freshman would expect, until I was faced with the hardest hit of my life. On Thursday, January 27, 2023, my mother passed away from a 10-year battle with ovarian cancer. This significantly impacted my view of life, showing me how quickly things can change and how what you once had can be gone in an instant. I remember the time I found out my mom was in critical condition. 2 days before she passed, my dad picked me up from track practice. I was in his car while my dad explained to me that my mother wasn't going to make it and that she didn't have much time left. My heart sank. I knew my mom's cancer was bad, but I never expected to lose my mom then, especially after seeing her fight so strongly. As soon as we arrived home, I remember rushing to hug and hold on to my warm and loving mom for possibly the last time, telling her, "I'm not ready for you to go.” It hurt to see my mom in the condition she was in, and the fact that I never truly knew the last time I would see her. Thursday morning, I came to find my family kneeling next to the reclining chair that my mom sat in. Then it happened, my mom was gone. I felt my heart skip multiple beats, and the room was dead silent. This was a profoundly loud silence. At the time and the following weeks, I was extremely overwhelmed with flooding feelings that I didn't know how to control. I felt confused, distraught, saddened, upset, and most of all lost. Everything felt wrong, out of place, as if something was missing from me. The one thing I can perfectly recall myself doing this day was carrying my mother outside and seeing her for the last time while I whispered to my mom and promised her, "I'm going to make it, I'm going to reach my dreams for you”. From that day on, I felt that I had a responsibility to my mom and myself to fulfill my dreams of playing football at the next level. Carrying her strength with me, I was determined to get better and make my mom proud of the son she raised. This meant getting up early to work my butt off at 5:30 am Brentwood football workouts, it meant giving it my all during practice and during lifts, it meant staying late after practice to get extra work, it meant practicing and lifting consistently outside of school training. As time went on, I noticed significant improvement in the weight room and on the field. My efforts started to pay off, and I became a varsity starter, seeing it not just as a title but as a chance to honor her and prove my growth. Every football game, I wore her favorite color, Pink. My Pink wrist and head bands stood out as I was reminded of what has gotten me to this point every time I step on the field. My mother's strength and dedication inspired me to reach the greatness that I only dreamed of, as I am now fully committed to Rhodes College to play football at the next level. Furthermore, in life, it's the unexpected experiences that can leave the biggest impact and turn your life upside down. For me, whether it's playing football or handling adversity, these powerful moments have enlightened me to see the bigger picture of what makes me who I am.
