I have had a lot of experiences, both good and bad in this sport. As I finish my high school wrestling career, I think about how wrestling has changed and molded me into the person I am now. I would like to think wrestling has impacted my life for the better. I grew up as a wrestler. I started wrestling when I was four years old. I can honestly say that first year I’m not sure I even went out on the mat. My parents say that I just sat on the sidelines watching everyone wrestle and taking everything in. I am not sure what made me step out on that mat. If you ask my dad, he will say it’s because I saw my brother win a trophy and I wanted one. Whatever that reason was, I am glad I did it. I was never predicted to win anything during my career. I was the kid that was told he was a great practice room partner. I was never looked at as the guy who is going to go places or win things. I always showed up and ground it out. I made myself and my partners a better wrestler. As the years went on, I became one of the best wrestlers in my program, making it to the state tournament 4 times and placing in the top 4 for two of those years. I achieved almost all the goals that I had set for myself. Your whole life you are told hard work and dedication will pay off. Stay focused and good things will come. With wrestling this is true, but it’s not as easy as it seems. Wrestling taught me about getting into the proper mental mindset, working hard and the importance of setting goals. No one tells you wrestling is about teamwork, but also independence. You must give 100 percent of yourself while being a good partner and teammate. I learned that I am capable of more than I thought I could do. Little things that are done consistently add up to big things. I may not have thought I was improving, but I was because I pushed myself and set goals. Wrestling has taught me that there is always someone out there who is bigger, stronger, and working harder than me. I learned that I am not entitled to anything, I have to earn everything that I want. If I didn’t get results I wanted, I had no one to blame but myself. My mom says if you are not having fun, you are doing it wrong. Maybe that is true. Some of my best memories of wrestling have been when I was joking around, smiling, and having fun with my team and family. Everyone thinks wrestling is life or death, winning or losing. In reality, no one cares. So, when I had successes and failures, I tried to not let them get to me because most likely I was the only no one that cared. Not everything in life needs to be so serious. You also need to have fun. Wrestling has brought me great memories over the past 14 years. I have laughed, cried, made friends from all over the United States, gotten into trouble a few times, and even won matches I had no business winning. I started taking those classes in my junior year of high school and have never looked back. Deciding to pursue Diesel mechanics changed my outlook on what career path I wanted. Last summer I was allowed to work for a great company (Aircraft Maintenance Specialties) that serviced and repaired many aircraft. I was able to use my skills from Diesel classes and jump right in. I worked side by side with all the mechanics and slowly learned how to do more things than I ever imagined I could. Aviation mechanics is almost a lifestyle. I learned that Aviation Mechanics is more than long hours and meeting deadlines. It is about unity and teamwork. Not only was I working with a great group of guys, but I was also learning how to be a well-rounded person. AMS gave me the opportunity to network with clients and build my skills. I enjoyed working on airplanes. AMS strongly encouraged me to continue my path in the aviation field. I believe with my excellent academic achievements and work experience that I am a good candidate for this scholarship.
