I am currently working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electrical & Electronic Systems Technology Service Management at Lincoln Tech. For me, going back to school was not just about getting another piece of paper. I wanted to build a better career for myself and my family, learn a trade I can take anywhere, and prove to myself that I could still push forward even when life is already busy. Before this, I served in the United States Air Force as a Security Forces Airman from 2010 to 2012, including a deployment to Iraq. The Air Force taught me responsibility, attention to detail, how to work under pressure, and how to keep doing the job even when you are tired and would rather be anywhere else. Those lessons have stuck with me. I do not currently plan on returning to the Air Force or joining another branch after graduation. I have already had the honor of serving my country, and now I want to carry that same work ethic into the next part of my life. I still look at skilled trade work as a form of service. Electricians and technicians keep buildings running, maintain infrastructure, troubleshoot problems, and make sure systems are safe for everyone who depends on them. Right now, I work full-time during the day and attend school at night Monday through Thursday. There are plenty of days where I leave home early, work a full shift, and then spend several more hours in class. It gets exhausting, but I keep showing up. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, made the Dean's List and Honor Roll, and was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. I am proud of that because none of it came from having a lot of free time. It came from deciding that if I was going to do this, I was going to give it everything I had. I am also a husband and a father. A big reason I am doing this is because my family watches what I do. I want my kids to see that it is never too late to change direction, learn something new, or work toward something better. I want them to understand that saying you want something and actually putting in the work are two different things. After graduation, my goal is to continue growing in the electrical field, gain as much real-world experience as possible, earn higher-level certifications, and eventually reach journeyman-level qualifications. I am especially interested in electrical systems, troubleshooting, infrastructure, and industrial work where technical knowledge and hands-on ability come together. Reading about SrA Terry “TJ” Sams Jr. makes this scholarship mean more to me than just another award. He was an Airman working in Civil Engineering, and while our Air Force jobs were different, I understand the pride and responsibility that comes with wearing that uniform. I cannot change where my military career ended, but I can control what I do with the rest of my life. Right now, that means working, going to school, taking care of my family, and building something I can be proud of. Receiving this scholarship would help ease some of the financial pressure while I finish that mission, and I would be extremely grateful for the opportunity.

I am an Air Force veteran, a full-time employee, a husband and dad, and a full-time night student studying electrical and electronic systems. Most days I leave home early in the morning, work my regular job, and then go straight to school until around 10 at night. So for me, online learning is not just something that is convenient. It is one of the biggest reasons I am able to keep pushing my education forward. I use several different online tools depending on what I am trying to learn. Pearson+ gives me access to my electrical textbooks when I do not have the physical book sitting in front of me. I use online NEC and NFPA resources when I am trying to understand code requirements. YouTube has honestly been one of my favorite tools because sometimes I can read something three times and it still does not click, but watching somebody actually wire it, test it, or explain why something works makes everything come together. I also use ChatGPT quite a bit as a study and research tool. I do not use it as a replacement for learning the material. I use it more like having somebody available to ask the twenty follow-up questions I am probably going to have anyway. Electrical code can be confusing, especially when one section points you to another section and then another. Being able to ask for something to be broken down into normal language helps me understand what I am actually reading. Then I can go back to my NEC book, my instructor, or another trusted source and verify it. Online learning has also allowed me to earn certifications and complete training outside of my normal school hours. I have completed FEMA/NIMS courses online and electrical safety training through Fluke. Those are things I can add to what I am learning in school instead of waiting until somebody tells me I have to learn them. The biggest thing for me is taking what I learn online and actually using it. If I am studying panel schedules, branch circuits, GFCI protection, electrical measurements, or code requirements, I can take that information into the lab and see how it applies to real electrical work. I am not learning this stuff just to pass a test. I am trying to build a second career. Going back to school as an adult veteran while working full-time is not easy. There are definitely nights when I am tired and would rather go home. But I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, made the Dean’s List, and joined the National Technical Honor Society. Online resources have helped me turn the small pieces of time I have available into more opportunities to learn. My goal is pretty simple. I want to become the best electrician and electrical technician I can become. If there is something I do not understand, I want to have enough drive to keep digging until I do. Online learning gives me the ability to do exactly that.

My main takeaway from Marcus Aurelius is pretty simple: doing what you need to do matters more than always feeling like doing it. From Meditations, Book 5: “In the morning when thou risest unwillingly, let this thought be present—I am rising to the work of a human being.” What I like about this passage is that Marcus Aurelius was literally the emperor of Rome, but he was still having to tell himself to get out of bed and go do what he was supposed to do. You would think an emperor would have everything figured out, or at least have enough people around him to make his life easy. Apparently not. He still woke up some mornings not wanting to get moving just like the rest of us. The part that really stands out to me is when he says “the work of a human being.” He does not say the work of an emperor. He does not talk about being powerful, important, rich, or above anybody else. He brings it all the way down to just being a human being. To me, that means everybody has something they are responsible for. Your title does not really matter. You can be an emperor, an electrician, a student, a parent, or somebody still trying to figure out what they want to do with their life. At some point you still have to get up and handle what is yours to handle. Another word that stands out to me is “unwillingly.” He did not always wake up motivated either. I understand that part probably more than anything else in the passage. I work full time during the day and then go to electrical school at night. My days start early, and by the time school is over at night I am ready to be done. Then I get up and do it again. There are mornings when that alarm goes off and I absolutely do not feel like getting up. There are nights when I have already worked all day and the last thing I want to do is sit in a classroom for another four hours. Sometimes I complain about it. Actually, a lot of times I complain about it. But I still go. I have a wife, kids, a job, school, and a future I am trying to build. I am not doing all of this because I wake up every morning overflowing with motivation. I am doing it because there are people depending on me and because I know where I want my life to go. I am also a veteran, and that has probably affected the way I look at responsibility. There are plenty of things in life that you do not necessarily feel like doing. You still have to show up. You still have to do your part. I think that is what Aurelius was getting at. Discipline is not the same thing as motivation. Motivation comes and goes. Some days you feel like you can take on the world. Other days you would rather stay in bed, shut the alarm off, and tell everybody to leave you alone. Discipline is what happens on those other days. I have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA while working full time and going to school at night. I am proud of that, but I also know it did not happen because every day was easy. There have been days where I was exhausted, irritated, distracted, stressed out, and just plain tired of doing everything. I went anyway. That is why I do not read this passage as Marcus Aurelius giving some big inspirational speech. I actually like it because it is almost the opposite. He is basically arguing with himself first thing in the morning. He does not want to get up. Then he reminds himself who he is and what he is supposed to be doing. I think most people can relate to that. For me, getting up means more than physically getting out of bed. It means continuing to work toward something even when I am tired of the process. It means going to work. It means showing up to school. It means being there for my wife and kids. It means learning a trade and trying to build a better future for my family. Sitting at home because I am tired might make me feel better for that night, but it does not get me any closer to where I want to be. I am definitely not somebody who wakes up every morning fired up and ready to conquer the world. Half the time I am probably complaining while I put my boots on. But I still put them on. That is what this passage means to me.

For me, alcoholism has never really been about partying. It has been about misery. I am a veteran who deployed to Iraq, and there are things I brought home with me that I did not know how to leave there. Stress, anger, memories, trouble sleeping, and the constant noise in my head do not always shut off when I want them to. Alcohol became one of the ways I tried to make everything quiet for a little while. The problem is that the relief never lasts. I drink, I temporarily stop caring about whatever is bothering me, and then I wake up the next day regretting it. I regret how much I drank. I regret things I may have said. I regret losing time that could have been spent with my wife or my kids. Most of all, I hate waking up knowing that I used alcohol to run from something instead of dealing with it. That cycle is exhausting. I am not going to write a scholarship essay and pretend that alcoholism suddenly became easy for me. It hasn't. Sobriety is something I have to actively fight for. There are still days when drinking sounds easier than sitting with everything going on inside my head. The difference now is that I understand what alcohol is actually costing me and what I have to lose. I have a wife and children who deserve the best version of me. I have a career. I am also attending Lincoln Tech at night while working full-time during the day, pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology Service Management. Somehow, in the middle of all of this, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, earned Honor Roll and Dean's List recognition, and been accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. Those accomplishments mean more to me than awards on paper. They remind me that I am capable of building something instead of destroying something. Electrical work has given me something productive to chase. There is always another skill to learn, another certification to earn, another problem to solve, and another person who knows something I do not. Eventually, I want to be the person teaching those skills to somebody else. I especially want to help veterans, people entering the trades later in life, and people who believe the mistakes they have made disqualify them from having a successful future. I know what it is like to wake up disappointed in yourself. I also know what it feels like to walk into class exhausted after working all day and still decide to keep going. My education is helping me become an electrician, but it is also helping me become the man, husband, father, and veteran I want to be. I am still a work in progress. But I am finally building in the right direction.

Mental illness isn't something I've only read about or watched somebody else go through. It became part of my life after serving in the United States Air Force. I served in Security Forces from 2010 to 2012 and deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in 2011–2012. I came home from that experience, but parts of it came home with me. I live with service-connected PTSD, and for a long time I didn't fully understand how much it affected not only me, but the people closest to me. PTSD isn't always what people picture from movies. For me, it can show up through nightmares, being constantly on guard, irritability, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, lack of motivation, and days where everything feels harder than it probably should. Sleep can be difficult. There have been nights when my wife has had to wake me from nightmares. There are also times when something that seems small to somebody else can feel enormous inside my own head. One of the hardest things I've had to learn is that mental illness doesn't stay contained inside one person. My wife and family live around parts of my PTSD too. They've had to learn me just like I've had to learn myself. I'm still working on it. But mental illness is only one part of my story. At 37 years old, I decided to go back to school and build a new career. I currently work full time for Metro Water Services in Nashville as a Utility Field Technician and attend Lincoln Tech four nights a week studying Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology. There are days when I leave home early in the morning and don't walk back through the door until around 11:00 at night. Since starting school in April, I've maintained a 4.0 GPA, made Honor Roll, and was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. Those accomplishments probably mean more to me because of PTSD, not despite it. There are days when concentrating in class is difficult. There are mornings after bad nights of sleep when going to work and then sitting in a classroom until 10:00 at night is the last thing I feel like doing. I've had to learn to ask questions, write things down, use reminders, accept help from my wife, instructors and other people around me, and keep showing up. My goal is to become a damn good electrician and eventually work in industrial electrical, controls, automation, PLCs, electrical testing and troubleshooting. I also want to help other veterans entering the trades someday, especially the ones who might be carrying things nobody around them can see. Living with PTSD has taught me something I probably wouldn't understand otherwise: somebody can be struggling and still be capable of accomplishing incredible things. I'm not trying to erase what happened to me or pretend PTSD doesn't exist. I'm learning how to build a life alongside it. Going back to school is part of that life.

I am the qualifying veteran applicant. I served in the United States Air Force from 2010 to 2012 as a Security Forces Airman and deployed to Baghdad, Iraq in 2011–2012. Military service shaped a lot of who I became, both in good ways and difficult ones. It taught me responsibility, attention to detail, how to work when conditions aren't ideal, and what it means when other people are depending on you. I also left the military carrying challenges that I still deal with today. At 37, I've decided those challenges aren't going to determine what the rest of my life looks like. I currently work full time for Metro Water Services in Nashville as a Utility Field Technician while attending Lincoln Tech four nights a week for Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology. Since starting school in April, I've maintained a 4.0 GPA, made Honor Roll, and was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. My goal is to become a damn good electrician and eventually specialize in industrial electrical, controls, PLCs, automation, electrical testing, and troubleshooting. I want a career where I'm constantly learning and where the work I do keeps systems and infrastructure people depend on operating safely. Being a veteran also affects how I view the people coming behind me. Eventually, I want to help younger technicians and other veterans entering the trades. Starting over doesn't mean you're starting from nothing. The military gave me experiences, discipline, and perspective that I'm now bringing into an entirely different career. My education isn't about leaving my military service behind. It's about taking what that chapter taught me and building the next one.

I’m 37 years old, a U.S. Air Force veteran, husband, father, full-time Utility Field Technician for Metro Water Services in Nashville, and an Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology student at Lincoln Tech. I’m going back to school at a point in life when a lot of people would probably say they’re already established in their career. I looked at it differently. I realized I still had time to build the career I actually wanted, so I decided to go after it. I work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and attend Lincoln Tech four nights a week until around 10:00 p.m. Since starting school in April, I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA, made Honor Roll, and was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. My goal is to become a damn good electrician, but I want to take my technical career further into industrial electrical, controls, PLCs, automation, electrical testing, and troubleshooting. What interests me most is figuring out why something isn’t working. I like taking measurements, using meters and test equipment, reading diagrams, tracing problems, and understanding what a system is supposed to be doing before deciding what needs to be repaired. I don’t want to become somebody who just changes parts until something starts working again. I want to understand the system well enough to find the actual problem. My current job at Metro Water Services has already shown me how important technical workers are to everyday life. Most people don’t think about water infrastructure until they turn on a faucet and nothing comes out. Electricity is the same way. Our homes, hospitals, water systems, businesses, communications, transportation, and increasingly automated infrastructure all depend on people who know how to safely keep those systems operating. That is where I believe I can make an impact. I want to use what I learn to help maintain and troubleshoot the infrastructure people depend on every day. As electrical systems become more automated and interconnected, technicians are going to need to understand more than just wiring. They will need to understand controls, communications, testing, programming, and how different systems interact. I want to keep learning throughout my career so I can be one of the people capable of solving those problems. But I don’t want that knowledge to stop with me. Something I’ve already discovered at Lincoln Tech is that I enjoy helping classmates. If I understand something somebody else is struggling with, I’ll sit down and try explaining it another way. Sometimes I’m the guy asking a hundred questions myself. I’ve learned there’s value in both. Eventually I want to do the same thing for apprentices, younger technicians, and veterans entering the trades. I want to be the experienced guy who sees somebody struggling and says, “Come here. Let me show you how I was taught.” I probably won’t change the world with one electrical repair. But I can keep critical systems working, solve problems safely, teach the next person what I know, and leave every crew and workplace a little better than I found it. To me, that’s how a technical career makes a difference.

Being first-generation means I'm figuring out a road nobody in my family could hand me a map for. I'm 37 years old, a U.S. Air Force veteran, husband, father, full-time Utility Field Technician, and now an electrical student at Lincoln Tech in Nashville. Going back to school at this point in my life wasn't the easy choice. It was the choice I made because I finally knew what I wanted my future to look like. I work for Metro Water Services from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and attend Lincoln Tech four nights a week until around 10:00 at night. I live in Clarksville, so some days I'm gone from early in the morning until almost 11 at night. Then I get up and do it again. I also manage service-connected disabilities from my military service. There are days when pain, migraines, lack of sleep, stress, or difficulty concentrating make an already long day harder. I've learned that determination isn't always some dramatic moment where you overcome everything. Sometimes it's just showing up again tomorrow. So far, I've kept showing up. Since starting Lincoln Tech in April, I've maintained a 4.0 GPA, made Honor Roll, and was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. Those accomplishments mean a lot to me because I know what was happening outside the classroom while I was earning them. My dream is to become a damn good electrician and eventually specialize in industrial electrical, controls, PLCs, automation, electrical testing, and troubleshooting. I don't just want to know how to replace something. I want to understand how systems work well enough to figure out why they failed. Being first-generation also means something different to me because I'm a father. My daughter gets to watch me do this. She gets to see that at 37 years old her dad decided he wasn't finished learning. She sees me leave for work, go straight to school afterward, come home late, study, struggle with things, ask questions, and keep going. Someday when she faces something difficult, I want part of her to remember watching me do this and think, Dad figured his way through something he had never done before. I can too. A $5,000 scholarship wouldn't create my determination. That's already there. It would give that determination some breathing room. VA benefits help tremendously, but they don't make tools, electrical testing equipment, PPE, certifications, transportation, vehicle maintenance, books, and normal family expenses disappear. I'm trying to build this career without creating a mountain of debt for my family in the process. Being first-generation means I'm building the map while I'm walking the road. But hopefully, because I walked it first, my kids won't have to start without one.

I don't want everything I'm doing right now to end with me getting a better job. If that's all that comes from it, I think I missed part of the point. I'm 37 years old, a U.S. Air Force veteran, husband, father, full-time Utility Field Technician for Metro Water Services, and now an electrical student at Lincoln Tech in Nashville. I work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and go to school four nights a week until around 10:00 at night. I live in Clarksville, so there are plenty of nights I don't walk through my front door until around 11. I didn't go back to school because life suddenly became convenient. I went back because I finally figured out what I wanted to build. Since starting Lincoln Tech in April, I've maintained a 4.0 GPA, made Honor Roll, and was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society. I'm proud of those things, but something else has happened that means just as much to me. I've found myself helping other guys in my class. Sometimes I'll understand something that somebody else doesn't, so I'll sit down with them and try to explain it differently. Other times I'm the one asking a hundred questions because something isn't clicking for me. I've learned that neither one is something to be embarrassed about. That's part of the impact I want to have. I want to become a damn good electrician. I'm especially interested in industrial electrical, controls, PLCs, automation, electrical testing and troubleshooting. I want to be the guy who can walk up to a system that isn't working, slow down, take measurements, understand what it's supposed to be doing and figure out what actually went wrong. But someday I also want to be the experienced guy who notices the new apprentice standing there afraid to ask a question and says, “Come here. Let me show you something.” A lot of people have helped me get to where I am. My wife and family deal with the long days and nights that come with me working and going to school. My instructors stay after class and answer my questions. The VA has given me an opportunity to retrain and build another career after the military. Even classmates have taught me things without realizing it. I don't want to take all of that help and pull the ladder up behind me. As I become more experienced, I want to mentor younger tradespeople and veterans transitioning into civilian careers. I'd especially like to help veterans who think starting over means they're already behind. I know what it's like to be an adult sitting in a classroom wondering whether you're crazy for starting something new while everybody else your age seems established. Eventually, I'd love to work with schools, veteran organizations, or apprenticeship programs to help people get exposure to the electrical trade, understand the career paths available to them, and get their hands on actual tools and equipment. I can't promise I'm going to change the entire world. What I can do is become good at my trade, take care of my family, help the people working beside me, teach what I've learned to the person coming up behind me, and never forget the people who did the same thing for me. If enough people do that, I think that's how you build a better future anyway.

The trades gave me something I had been missing since I left the United States Air Force. They gave me another mission and something real to work toward. I attend Lincoln Tech for Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology, where I am working toward my associate degree. I also work full time outdoors for Nashville Metro Water Services from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. I drive about 55 miles from home to Nashville every morning. My school is only five minutes from work, and classes start at 5:45 p.m., so I usually go there early instead of driving home. I use that extra time to help tutor other students, including younger students and adults who may be struggling with the material. I do not know everything, and I am still learning too, but when I understand something that someone else is having trouble with, I try to explain it in a way that makes sense. Helping someone else also helps me understand the material better. Class runs until 10:00 at night, and then I have about an hour drive home. By then I have worked outdoors all day, spent several hours at school, and been away from my family since early that morning. Some nights I am physically hurting and mentally worn down, but I keep showing up because I know what I am working toward. I was recently awarded a 100% Permanent and Total disability rating through the Department of Veterans Affairs. That rating represents physical pain and mental struggles caused by my military service. Some days pain makes working outside, sitting through class, driving, and concentrating harder. Other days the mental side is harder than the physical side. I do not mention that for sympathy. It is simply part of the reality behind what it takes for me to keep moving forward. My wife and I recently celebrated our first wedding anniversary. Her support means everything to me. While I am working, driving, and attending school at night, she helps hold everything together at home and takes care of my daughter. I could not keep this schedule without her. I am the one sitting in the classroom, but my family is making sacrifices with me. My goal is to build a long-term career in the electrical field. I do not just want to finish school and be handed an associate degree. I want to earn it by proving that I understand the work. I want to become skilled in electrical theory, circuits, test equipment, troubleshooting, alternating current, controls, automation, and PLCs. I want to be the person people can trust when something is not working and nobody else can figure out why. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA and made the Honor Roll while working full time. I am also working toward becoming part of the National Technical Honor Society. I am proud of those accomplishments because they did not come easy. They came from going to class tired, studying when I wanted to sleep, asking questions, and continuing even when pain or mental struggles made it harder to focus. The Air Force taught me to show up ready, do my part, and take care of the people beside me. I carry that mindset into work and school. I try to treat everyone with respect, take safety seriously, and help classmates when I can. I am also interested in modern electrical systems, automation, and controls because I do not want to stop learning after graduation. My short-term goal is to finish my associate degree, earn more industry certifications, and gain hands-on experience. After graduation, I want to work with commercial or industrial electrical systems, automation, troubleshooting, and controls. Long term, I want to move into leadership, train newer workers, solve bigger problems, and help other veterans find a path into the trades. This scholarship would help with tools, safety equipment, books, certifications, fuel, and travel between home, work, and school. It would take some pressure off my family and help me stay focused on finishing what I started. I am not asking for someone to carry me. I am already doing the work. I work full time outdoors, drive long distances, attend school at night, help other students, maintain my grades, deal with physical pain and mental struggles, and keep going. This scholarship would help me build a career that my wife and daughter can be proud of and prove that a veteran’s next mission can be just as important as the one before it.

My faith has helped me in my life by giving me something solid to stand on when everything else felt unstable. I have not lived a perfect life, and I have not always handled every season the right way, but God has continued to pull me forward. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, I had to learn how to rebuild parts of myself, adjust to civilian life, and keep showing up for my family even when life felt heavy. Faith gave me strength when motivation was not enough. For me, faith is not just something I talk about on Sunday. It is something I have to live out in real life. It reminds me to be honest, to work hard, to stay humble, and to keep doing the next right thing even when nobody is watching. I have learned that life is not always about having everything figured out. Sometimes it is about trusting God, staying disciplined, and taking one step at a time. My faith has also helped me understand that struggle does not mean failure. There have been times when I felt worn down mentally, physically, and emotionally, but I kept coming back to the belief that God still had a purpose for me. That purpose is one reason I am back in school now. I am currently pursuing Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology at Lincoln Tech / Nashville Auto-Diesel College while working full time. It is not easy balancing work, school, family, and responsibilities, but I believe this is part of building the next chapter of my life the right way. Faith has taught me that providing for my family is not just about money. It is about being dependable. It is about being present. It is about becoming the kind of man my wife and children can count on. That is one of the reasons I am working toward a career in the electrical trade. I want to build a stable future through honest, hands-on work that matters. I believe my faith will assist me in my career by helping me stay grounded. Electrical work requires focus, patience, safety, and integrity. You cannot cut corners when people are depending on your work to be safe. My faith reminds me that every job deserves respect, whether it is big or small. It reminds me to treat customers, coworkers, and supervisors with respect. It also reminds me that my work is a reflection of my character. Long term, I want to become a dependable tradesman and someone who can help others coming behind me. I want to keep learning, keep improving, and keep using my story to encourage other veterans, students, and working parents who are trying to build a better life. God has helped me keep going, and I believe He will continue helping me stay disciplined, honest, and focused in my future career.

I am an Air Force veteran, husband, father, full-time Utility Field Technician for Metro Water Services, and a night student pursuing electrical training. My life right now is busy, but it has purpose. I work during the day, go to school at night, and keep pushing because I am trying to build something better for my family and my future. I am interested in entering the energy workforce because energy is one of those things people do not think about until it stops working. Power, water, utilities, and infrastructure are what keep homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, and whole communities moving. When the lights come on, when equipment runs, when systems work the way they are supposed to, it is because somebody with training and work ethic did their job right. I want to be one of those people. I have always respected blue-collar work because it is real. There is no hiding behind talk when something has to be fixed. Either you know what you are doing, or you do not. Either the job is done right, or it is not. That kind of work fits me. I like being useful. I like learning something that I can actually apply with my hands. I like knowing that the work I do can affect real people in a real way. Working for Metro Water Services has already shown me how important utilities are. People depend on these systems every day, whether they realize it or not. Bad weather, long hours, hot days, cold days, and tough conditions do not stop the work from needing to be done. That has taught me that the energy and utility workforce needs dependable people who will show up, learn, and take pride in doing the job right. My goal is to become a skilled and dependable electrical technician. I want to understand the trade, keep getting better, and build a long-term career in the utility and energy field. I am not chasing something easy. I am chasing something solid. I want a career where my effort matters, where I can provide for my family, and where I can keep growing instead of staying stuck in one place. Being a veteran also plays a big part in why this matters to me. The military taught me discipline, responsibility, and how to keep moving when things get hard. Life after service has not always been simple, but I still believe in showing up and doing the work. Going to school after a full workday is not easy, but I know why I am doing it. I am entering this field because I want to help keep communities running. I want to be part of the crew that people count on when systems need to work. Long term, I would also like to use my experience to help other veterans, students, and working people see that the trades can give them a real path forward. For me, this is not just about a job. It is about building a future with my hands, my training, and my work ethic.

I am pursuing the electrical trade because I want a career that is real, useful, and built with my own hands. I have always respected the trades because this country does not run on talk. It runs on people who wake up early, put on boots, fix problems, and keep things moving. Electrical work matters. Homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, water systems, and job sites all depend on people who know what they are doing and take pride in doing it right. I am passionate about it because I want more than just a paycheck. I want a skill I can carry for the rest of my life. I work full time as a Utility Field Technician for Metro Water Services in Nashville, and after work I go to school at night. Most days are long. I get up, work outside in the heat, cold, rain, or whatever the day throws at me, and then I go sit in class and keep learning. It is not easy, but I know why I am doing it. I am building a future for myself and my family. After I finish my trade education, my goal is to become a strong, dependable tradesman who can provide for my family and eventually help others coming up behind me. I want to gain experience, keep learning, and become the kind of man people trust on a job. Long term, I would like to use my skills to create more stability for my family and maybe one day help other veterans or students who are trying to get into the trades but do not know where to start. I know what it feels like to have ambition but not always have the money, tools, or support to make the road easier. A time I overcame adversity was after leaving the military and trying to figure out how to keep moving forward while carrying things most people could not see. I am an Air Force veteran, and service changed me. Coming home did not mean everything just went back to normal. I had to learn how to deal with stress, sleep problems, anger, being on edge, and still show up as a father, husband, worker, and student. There were times where I felt like I was just pushing through because that is what I thought I was supposed to do. What helped me work through it was finally realizing that being strong does not mean pretending everything is fine. Being strong means telling the truth, getting help when you need it, and still showing up the next day. I leaned on my family, my faith, my work ethic, and the mindset that I was not done yet. I may have been knocked down, but I was not finished. The trades give me a mission again. They give me a way to build something solid instead of just talking about wanting a better life. I am not afraid of hard work. I already know what long days feel like. I just need the chance to keep moving forward, keep learning, and prove that a veteran, a father, and a working man can still build something better from the ground up.

My name is Dustin Franking, and the trade I am passionate about pursuing is electrical work. I am currently a student at Lincoln Tech while also working full time as a Utility Field Technician for Metro Water in Nashville. My schedule is not light. I work in the field during the day, and most days the job is finished when the work is actually done, not when the clock says it is. After work, I head to school at night and keep pushing because I know the life I am trying to build will not come from sitting still. Electrical work means more to me than just learning a skill or getting a better job. It represents stability, purpose, and the chance to build something solid with my own hands. Electricity powers everything around us: homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, utilities, and the systems people depend on every day. When electrical work is done right, most people never think about it. When it is done wrong, it can affect safety, comfort, and people’s lives. That responsibility is part of what draws me to it. I want to be the kind of tradesman who does the job right, takes pride in the details, and earns trust through his work. A big part of my inspiration comes from my background as a U.S. Air Force veteran. Military service taught me discipline, accountability, and the importance of being dependable when others are counting on you. I served in Security Forces, and that kind of work taught me to stay sharp, pay attention, and keep moving even when things were hard. Those lessons still carry over into my life now. Whether I am working in the field, sitting in class, or trying to balance family responsibilities, I try to show up with the same mindset: do the work, do it right, and do not quit. My family is another major reason I am pursuing this trade. I am a husband and a father, and I want to give my family a better future. There are nights when I am tired before I ever walk into class. There are times when I miss out on rest, family time, or just a normal evening at home because I am trying to improve myself. But I know my kids are watching. I want them to see that hard work still matters. I want them to know that if you want a better life, you have to be willing to sacrifice, learn, and keep going even when it is uncomfortable. The trades appeal to me because they are honest. You cannot fake good work. Either the wire is pulled right, the connection is safe, the system works, or it does not. That kind of accountability fits me. I respect work that can be measured by effort, skill, and results. I also respect that skilled trades keep this country running. Not everybody has to sit behind a desk to build a successful life. Some of us are built to work with our hands, solve real problems, and leave something useful behind. This scholarship would help relieve some pressure while I continue balancing work, school, family, and life as a veteran starting a new chapter. I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for support while I put in the work. My goal is to become skilled, dependable, and useful in the electrical trade. I want to provide for my family, represent veterans well, and prove that a blue-collar path is not a backup plan. It is a proud path, a necessary path, and for me, the right path.

My name is Dustin Franking. I’m a U.S. Air Force veteran, a husband, a father, a full-time Utility Field Technician for Metro Water in Nashville, and a night student at Lincoln Tech. My life is work, school, family, and trying to build something better without making excuses. I work in the field from 7:00 in the morning until 3:30, but anybody who works blue collar knows the clock does not always decide when the job is finished. Most days, the work is done when the work is done. After that, I head straight to class and stay there until 10:00 at night. Then I go home, try to be present for my family, sleep a little, and do it all over again. My background is not fancy, but it is real. The Air Force taught me discipline, accountability, teamwork, and how to keep moving when things get heavy. I served in Security Forces, and that kind of job teaches you quickly that people depend on you even when you are tired, stressed, or dealing with your own battles. After the military, life did not magically get easy. Like a lot of veterans, I had to figure out where I fit, how to keep providing, and how to turn my experience into something useful. Working for Metro Water has shown me the value of real work that keeps a city running. Public utilities are not glamorous, but they matter. People count on clean water, working systems, and workers willing to get dirty, troubleshoot problems, deal with weather, and do the job right. That kind of work lines up with who I am. I like being useful. I like being the guy who shows up, figures it out, and leaves things better than I found them. That is why I am pursuing a career in the trades, especially electrical work. Electrical work is not just pulling wire or turning a wrench. It takes patience, math, safety, attention to detail, and pride. If something is done wrong, people can get hurt. If something is done right, it can power homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, and communities. I respect that. I want to learn the trade the right way and become the kind of electrician people can trust. What motivates me most is my family. I want my kids to see that hard work still means something. I want them to understand that nothing worth having comes easy, and that when life gets tough, you do not fold. You adjust, you learn, and you keep moving. There are days I am worn out before I even make it to school. There are nights I miss time with my family because I am in class trying to better myself. That is not always easy, but it is a sacrifice I am willing to make because I know what I am building toward. This scholarship would help take pressure off while I keep balancing work, school, family, and life as a veteran building a new path. I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for support while I put in the work. I am serious about this career because the trades give people a chance to build a life with their hands, their brain, and their backbone. My goal is simple. I want to become skilled, dependable, and useful. I want to provide better for my family, represent veterans the right way, and prove that a blue-collar path is something to be proud of. I am not chasing easy. I am chasing purpose, stability, and a future I earned.

Being the son of a Marine shaped the way I look at work, responsibility, sacrifice, and the kind of man I want to become. My father served in the Marine Corps as a combat engineer, and that kind of job is not easy or soft. Combat engineers are expected to solve problems under pressure, work with their hands, clear obstacles, build, repair, protect, and do dangerous work that most people never see. Growing up knowing that gave me a deep respect for discipline, toughness, and skilled hands-on work. My father’s service showed me that hard jobs matter. It taught me that a career should be more than just collecting a paycheck. It should mean something. It should build something, protect something, fix something, or help someone. That example stayed with me through my own life and helped shape the direction I wanted to go. I ended up serving in the Air Force myself, and my time in uniform only made those lessons stronger. Military service taught me that people depend on you, whether you are tired, stressed, scared, or dealing with your own problems. Now I am a full-time Utility Field Technician with Metro Nashville Water Services and an electrical student at Lincoln Tech / Nashville Auto-Diesel College. I work during the day and go to school at night because I am trying to build a better future for my family. It is not easy, but I know easy does not always build the kind of life you want. My father’s Marine Corps background helped me understand that good things take work, and that a man has to be willing to show up even when it is hard. The electrical field fits the values I grew up around. It takes focus, safety, problem-solving, pride, and respect for the people who will depend on your work after you leave the job. You cannot fake your way through skilled trade work. You have to learn it, practice it, and do it right. That is the kind of career I want. I want to become a dependable tradesman, a provider for my family, and eventually someone who can help teach or guide others coming up behind me. Being the son of a veteran gave me a strong foundation. My father’s service showed me discipline and grit. My own service showed me responsibility and sacrifice. Now my education is helping me turn those values into a long-term career. I carry that legacy with me every day: show up, do the work, take care of your people, and leave things better than you found them.

Mental health is important to me as a student because I know what it feels like to carry more than a backpack into class. I am a combat veteran, a husband, a father, a full-time utility field technician, and an adult student going through electrical training at night. On paper, that might sound like discipline and drive, and it is. But behind that is a lot of pressure that people do not always see. After serving in the Air Force Security Forces and deploying to Iraq, I learned how to push through hard situations. That mindset helped me survive, work, and provide. But it also made it harder to admit when I was struggling. In the military and in a lot of blue-collar work, people are taught to suck it up, stay quiet, and keep moving. I respect toughness, but I have also learned that staying silent can break a person down. Mental health matters because a student cannot truly learn, grow, or build a future if their mind is barely holding together. As a student, I work all day in the field and then go to school at night. There are days I am tired before class even starts. There are days stress, PTSD, family responsibilities, and life all hit at once. Mental health is what helps me stay grounded enough to keep showing up. It helps me remember that asking for help is not weakness. It is maintenance, the same way tools need to be taken care of if they are expected to work right. A person is no different. I advocate for mental health by being honest about it. I do not try to act like I have everything figured out. Around my family, other veterans, coworkers, and classmates, I try to be the kind of person who makes it okay to say, “I am having a rough time.” I believe a lot of people are fighting battles they never speak about because they are afraid of being judged. Sometimes advocacy is not a speech or a big program. Sometimes it is checking on someone, listening without making them feel small, and reminding them they are not alone. In my home, I want my family to see that real strength includes faith, humility, patience, and healing. In my school community, I try to bring the same mindset I learned through service and trade work: look out for the person next to you. If someone is struggling, you do not step over them. You help them get back on their feet. Mental health is important to me because I have seen what happens when people carry pain in silence. I also know what can happen when someone finally feels heard. I am working toward a better future through education, but I also want to keep becoming a better man, husband, father, student, and worker. To me, mental health is not separate from success. It is part of the foundation that makes success possible.

Military service-related PTSD changed the way I moved through the world. I served in the Air Force as Security Forces and deployed to Iraq. My job was to stay alert, protect the base, and be ready when things went bad. There were mortar attacks, times where gunfire hit around us, and moments where I realized how fast life can change. When I came home, my body left the deployment, but my mind did not fully come home with it. PTSD showed up in ways I did not understand at first. I was angry all the time. I slept light, woke up often, and felt like I could never fully relax. Loud noises could put me right back in that mindset. I stayed on guard even when I was safe. I had a hard time trusting people, connecting with people, and explaining what was going on inside me. From the outside, I probably looked like I was just short-tempered or hard to deal with. Inside, I was carrying a fight nobody else could see. For a while, I handled it the wrong way. I tried to push it down, work harder, ignore it, and numb it. Alcohol became part of that battle for a season of my life, and it cost me. It hurt relationships, affected my judgment, and made problems worse instead of fixing them. That is not easy to admit, but it is part of the truth. PTSD did not just affect my sleep or mood. It affected how I showed up as a man, a father, a worker, and a veteran. What I have learned is that strength is not pretending nothing is wrong. Strength is being honest enough to face it. I have had to learn how to slow down, ask for help, use treatment, control my anger better, and build structure back into my life. I work full time, go to school at night, and keep pushing because I want my family to see a man who does not quit when life gets heavy. I want to use my experience to help other veterans by being real with them. Not polished. Not fake. Just real. A lot of veterans suffer quietly because they think asking for help makes them weak. I want them to know it does not. I want to help other veterans understand that PTSD is not a character flaw, and recovery is not about becoming who you were before. It is about building who you are now. My goal is to keep learning, keep healing, and use my story to pull another veteran out of the dark if I can. If my scars can help another veteran feel less alone, then they are not wasted.

One project I have been passionate about is building a better system for my electrical training and field work. I work full time as a Utility Field Technician for Metro Water Services in Nashville while also going to electrical trade school at night. Between work, school, commuting from Clarksville, and family responsibilities, I had to create a plan that keeps me organized and moving forward. I cannot afford to just wing it. I have to plan my work and work my plan. The project started because I realized I needed a way to connect what I was learning in class with what I was seeing in the real world. Electrical training can be a lot to take in: formulas, wiring methods, tools, safety rules, code references, conduit bending, diagrams, and troubleshooting steps. Instead of only studying enough to pass tests, I began building my own practical system of notes and resources that I can actually use. I organize formulas, diagrams, class notes, tool lists, safety reminders, and field observations so the information stays useful after the module is over. This project matters to me because technology is not just computers or software. In my world, technology is the equipment, meters, circuits, utility systems, records, and tools that keep homes, businesses, and cities running. Working in utilities has shown me that people depend on systems they rarely think about until something goes wrong. Electrical and utility work both require accuracy, patience, and respect for safety. A small mistake can turn into a serious problem, so I take the learning process seriously. Technology inspires me because it turns effort into capability. When I understand how something works, I am no longer just guessing. I can troubleshoot, solve problems, and make better decisions. That is powerful to me. It gives a working adult like me a way to build a stronger future through skill instead of shortcuts. As a veteran, I also connect with the discipline behind technology. Training matters. Repetition matters. Details matter. You do not get good by accident. You get good by showing up, learning the process, checking your work, and taking responsibility for the result. That mindset carries me through long days at work and late nights in school. My goal is to finish my electrical training, keep building field experience, and move into a stable skilled-trade career where I can support my family and serve my community. Eventually, I want to become the kind of tradesman who can help teach others coming up behind me. This project inspires me because it is bigger than school notes. It is me building a system for the man I am trying to become: dependable, skilled, disciplined, and prepared. Technology gives me a path forward, and I am working that plan one day at a time.

I love math because it is one of the few things in life that does not care about excuses. The numbers either work or they do not. That may sound simple, but for me, that is what makes math valuable. I work full time as a Utility Field Technician and go to electrical trade school at night. In both places, math is not just something on a worksheet. It is part of the job. In the utility field, measurements, pressure, distance, time, usage, and records all matter. In electrical school, math shows up in conduit bends, voltage, current, resistance, box fill, load calculations, and troubleshooting. A small mistake on paper can turn into a big problem in the field, so math teaches me to slow down, think clearly, and check my work. I did not always look at math like that. When I was younger, it felt like another subject I had to get through. Now I see it as a tool. It helps me understand how things work instead of just guessing. It helps me build confidence because every problem has a process. Even when the answer is hard to find, there is a path to get there. Math also connects to the life I am trying to build. I use it to budget my money, plan my commute, manage school expenses, and keep my family moving forward. I am working full time, going to school until 10 p.m. most nights, and trying to create a better future. Math helps me stay organized and make better decisions. To me, math is discipline. It is problem-solving. It is proof that complicated things can be broken down one step at a time. That is why I love it. Math reminds me that even when life feels messy, there is usually a way to work the problem and find the answer.

My main goal is to build a stable, skilled-trade career that gives my family security and lets me serve my community in a practical way. I am currently working full time as a Utility Field Technician with Metro Water Services in Nashville while also going to school at night through Lincoln Tech/Nashville Auto-Diesel College. My plan is not just to “get through school.” My plan is to turn this training into a long-term career in the electrical field, where I can grow into a licensed, dependable tradesman and eventually a leader who can help train others. My schedule is already built around that goal. I work Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and many days in utility work do not end exactly on time. When the job is done, then I am done. After work, I go to school Monday through Thursday until 10:00 p.m. That means my time is tight, but it also means I have had to learn discipline. I plan my week ahead, prepare what I need for class, stay on top of assignments, and keep pushing even when I am tired. To me, that is exactly what “plan your work, work your plan” means. My education plan has three parts. First, I need to complete each module and build a strong foundation in electrical theory, safety, tools, blueprint reading, code, wiring methods, and troubleshooting. Second, I need to keep building real-world experience by connecting what I learn in class to the field work I already do every day. Third, after graduation, I plan to pursue electrical employment, apprenticeship opportunities, certifications, and eventually the licensing path that will let me keep advancing. The resources I need are simple but important: tuition support, reliable transportation between Clarksville and Nashville, school supplies, electrical tools, PPE, textbooks, study materials, and money for testing or certification costs when those come up. My budget has to cover rent, gas, vehicle costs, family expenses, and school-related supplies. Because I am working full time while attending night school, every dollar has a job. A scholarship like this would help cover tools, books, fuel, and class materials so I can stay focused on finishing instead of constantly worrying about the next expense. My backup plan is also realistic. If I cannot move directly into the exact electrical position I want right away, I will keep working in utilities while applying for apprenticeships, helper positions, maintenance roles, and city or contractor jobs that build toward the same long-term goal. There is more than one road to success, but the mission stays the same. The impact I want is bigger than just a paycheck. I want my family to see me finish what I started. I want my daughter to know that hard work still matters. I want other veterans and working adults to see that it is not too late to learn a trade, rebuild, and create something solid. My plan is already in motion. I am not waiting for life to get easier. I am working the plan anyway.

The Taylor Swift performance that moved me the most was not on a stadium stage, a televised award show, or the Eras Tour. It was back at Hendersonville High School, when she was still just Taylor from school, standing up there with a guitar and a song she had written before the whole world knew her name. I went to Hendersonville High with Taylor. We used to sit in the math hallway, play guitar, and sing. At the time, none of us really understood what we were watching. We just knew she had something different. She was not trying to copy anybody. She was writing from real life, from real feelings, and from people we actually knew. One of those people was my best friend Drew, who inspired one of her early songs, “Teardrops on My Guitar.” I remember seeing her perform that song at the school talent show when she was just a freshman. Looking back now, that is the performance that sticks with me the most. Not because it had lights, fireworks, or a giant crowd, but because it was honest. It was a young girl with a guitar, a story, and enough courage to put her heart in front of people who knew exactly who and what she was singing about. That takes guts. Years later, seeing what she became makes that memory even more powerful. Everybody sees the superstar now, but I remember the beginning. I remember the hallway, the guitar, the nervous courage, and the raw talent before the machine was built around it. That performance showed me that big dreams do not always start loud. Sometimes they start in a school hallway, with a notebook, a guitar, and somebody brave enough to tell the truth. That matters to me now because I am also building something from the ground up. I work full time, go to school at night, and I am trying to create a better future for my family. Taylor’s early performance reminds me that you do not have to wait until everything is perfect to start. You just have to be real, keep showing up, and believe the small stage can lead somewhere bigger.

Recovery means I stopped letting pain drive the truck. After Iraq, PTSD followed me home in ways I did not understand at first. I dealt with anger, bad sleep, anxiety, memories I could not shut off, and the feeling that I always had to be on guard. For a long time, alcohol became the way I tried to turn the volume down. It was not healing. It was just hiding the problem until it came back louder. My recovery means taking ownership. It means admitting that alcohol cost me peace, relationships, jobs, and pieces of myself. It means choosing not to run from my trauma anymore. I still have hard days, but I handle them differently now. I work full time, go to school at night, show up for my family, and keep building a future instead of living stuck in the past. Recovery, to me, is discipline. It is honesty. It is getting back up when nobody sees how heavy the fight is. My goal is to finish school, build a stable career, and help other veterans understand that needing help does not make you weak. It means you are still fighting, just smarter.

After coming home from Iraq, I learned that war does not always end when the uniform comes off. I brought a lot back with me that I did not know how to explain. I had anger I could not shut down, sleep that never felt restful, memories that would hit out of nowhere, and a constant feeling like I had to stay ready for something bad to happen. At the time, I did not understand all of that as PTSD. I just knew I did not feel like the same man I used to be. For a while, alcohol became my way of trying to quiet my head. It was not about partying or having fun. It was about trying to turn the volume down. The problem is that alcohol did not fix anything. It only covered it up for a little while, and then it made life harder. It affected my judgment, my relationships, my work, and the way I saw myself. My medical records show a history of alcohol use tied to real consequences, and that is not easy to admit. But I would rather tell the truth than dress it up. I also used marijuana at different points because I was looking for relief. I was tired of being angry, tired of not sleeping right, tired of feeling like I was fighting battles nobody else could see. But I eventually realized that numbing pain is not the same thing as healing from it. I had to stop running from what was going on inside me and start facing it like a man. My growth has not been perfect, but it has been real. I stopped drinking, stepped away from marijuana, stayed connected with treatment, and started building structure back into my life. Today, I work full time, go to school at night, and keep pushing even when I am tired. That matters to me because my family deserves a dependable man, not just a man who survived. Moving forward, my goal is to finish school, build a stable career, and turn the hardest parts of my life into something useful. I know there are other veterans, students, and working people carrying pain quietly because they do not want to look weak. I want my story to show that asking for help, getting sober, and rebuilding your life is not weakness. It is discipline. It is accountability. It is fighting smarter. I cannot change everything that happened to me, but I can decide what kind of man I become because of it. My past may explain some of my scars, but it does not get to control my future.

Service-related PTSD has taught me that a person can look strong on the outside while carrying a fight most people never see. As a combat veteran, I learned early on how to keep moving, keep working, and keep things to myself. For a long time, I thought that was strength. What I have learned since then is that real strength is not pretending nothing affects you. Real strength is facing what affects you and refusing to let it have the final word over your life. PTSD has changed the way I understand myself. It has shown me that I am more disciplined than I realized, but also more human than I wanted to admit. There have been times when sleep was hard, peace felt distant, and my mind stayed on alert even when there was no reason to be. It forced me to see that survival and healing are not the same thing. Surviving gets you through the moment. Healing takes honesty, humility, faith, and consistent effort. I have had to learn how to live with purpose, not just endure. It has also changed the way I see the world around me. I have learned that many people are carrying wounds you cannot see. Because of that, I try to move through life with more patience and less judgment. You never really know what battle someone is fighting behind a straight face, a short answer, or a tired look. PTSD taught me that suffering is often silent. It also taught me that silent suffering can isolate people if they do not have the right support around them. That lesson has shaped the way I want to live and the way I want to help other veterans. I want to use my experience to remind them that they are not weak for struggling and not broken beyond repair. Too many veterans feel like they have to carry everything alone. I understand that mindset, because I have lived it. Sometimes the most powerful thing one veteran can do for another is be honest. Honest about the hard days. Honest about the strain PTSD can put on your mind, your relationships, and your sense of peace. Honest about the fact that asking for help does not make you less of a man or less of a veteran. I also hope to help other veterans in practical ways. I want to encourage them to keep going, stay connected, and use the resources available to them instead of withdrawing from life. I want to be the kind of person who listens without judging, speaks with understanding, and leads by example. Sometimes helping does not begin with a big speech. Sometimes it begins with a conversation, a shared struggle, or simply letting another veteran know he is seen. PTSD has not been the part of my life I would have chosen, but it has taught me resilience, compassion, and purpose. It has shown me that pain can either close you off from others or deepen your ability to serve them. I want my experience to do the second. I want to use what I have walked through to help other veterans believe that healing is possible and that their life still has meaning, value, and mission.

What I want to build is not just one thing. I want to build a stable future, a stronger skill set, and a life my family can stand on. I also want to build a career that is practical, honorable, and useful to the people around me. That is why I am pursuing electrical training and continuing my path in skilled trade work. My life has taught me that the best things are built over time. They are built with discipline, sacrifice, and consistency. As a combat veteran and a full-time utility field technician, I know what it means to work in environments where people depend on you to do the job right. I have learned that real work matters. It keeps homes running, supports families, and serves entire communities. That is the kind of work I want to keep doing, and that is the kind of future I want to build. Education is part of that foundation for me. I am returning to school because I want to sharpen my skills and create more long-term stability for my family. I am not chasing a title just to say I earned one. I am working toward training that will make me more capable, more valuable, and more prepared for the future. I want to build a career in the electrical field that gives me room to grow while still staying rooted in hands-on, meaningful work. On a personal level, I also want to build a life marked by resilience and purpose. As a disabled veteran living with PTSD and chronic pain, I understand that building a future is not always easy. Some days require more discipline than others. Some days require more grit than people can see from the outside. But those challenges have only made me more determined to build something solid instead of settling for less. The positive impact of this future would extend beyond me. It would strengthen my family by creating greater stability and opportunity. It would strengthen my community because skilled trade workers provide services people rely on every day. Whether through my work, my example, or the way I help others around me, I want my life to reflect service. I already try to do that through my job, through the way I support the people around me, and through the commitment I bring to work and family. What I want to build is a future that lasts. One built on faith, discipline, service, and hard work. This education is one of the tools that will help me build it.

My experience with mental health has changed the way I see goals, relationships, and the world around me. It has made me more honest with myself, more aware of what matters, and more determined to build a life with purpose. As a combat veteran, I have lived with PTSD and chronic pain after my military service. Those struggles have affected sleep, stress, focus, and daily life. For a long time, mental health felt like something to fight in silence. Over time, I learned that silence does not always equal strength. Real strength is learning how to carry hard things without letting them define the rest of your life. Mental health has shaped my goals by forcing me to become more intentional. I do not drift through life the way I might have when I was younger. I think carefully about what kind of man I want to be, what kind of provider I want to become, and what kind of future I want to build for my family. That is one reason I am pursuing further education in the skilled trades. I want stable, meaningful work that allows me to keep growing, keep learning, and keep building something real. My goals are no longer based only on ambition. They are based on purpose, structure, and the understanding that every day matters. It has also shaped my relationships. Mental health challenges can make it easy to withdraw, become guarded, or carry burdens in a way that affects the people closest to you. I have had to learn that the people who love you are not mind readers. Healing and growth require honesty, patience, and trust. My relationship with my wife has been one of the places where that lesson has mattered most. We start our mornings early, often around 3:30 or 4:00 a.m., and during our drive we spend time in devotionals and reflection together. That routine helps keep me grounded. It reminds me that strength is not just about enduring hardship. It is also about staying connected, staying faithful, and letting people walk with you through life instead of shutting them out. My experience with mental health has also changed my understanding of the world. It has made me more aware that many people are carrying things you cannot see. Because of that, I try to move through life with more empathy and less judgment. I know what it feels like to keep functioning on the outside while fighting something heavy on the inside. That understanding has made me respect other people’s battles more. It has also taught me that a person can be hurting and still be disciplined, capable, and committed. Most importantly, mental health has taught me that struggle and purpose can exist at the same time. I do not pretend that PTSD and pain have made life easier. They have not. They have created setbacks and forced me to work harder for peace, focus, and balance. But they have also refined me. They have made me more resilient, more self-aware, and more serious about the life I want to live. They have taught me to value discipline, faith, family, and meaningful work. Today, I do not see mental health as the end of my story. I see it as part of what shaped me into someone more determined to live with intention. It has made me want to build a better future, protect my relationships, and use my life in a way that matters. It has not taken away my goals. It has made those goals clearer.

I served in the United States Air Force from 2010 to 2012 as a Security Forces Journeyman. I served at Joint Base San Antonio Randolph and deployed in support of operations in Iraq. I left the military with an honorable discharge at the rank of Airman. My time in service taught me discipline, accountability, and how to keep going even when conditions are hard. It also shaped the way I see work, purpose, and responsibility. I learned early that service is not just about wearing a uniform. It is about showing up, doing difficult things well, and being dependable when others are counting on you. My current education goal is to complete my electrical training and continue building a long-term career in the skilled trades. My future goal is to use that training to create more stability for my family and to keep growing into a more valuable, knowledgeable, and capable tradesman. My military service played a major role in shaping those goals. The Air Force taught me to respect structure, training, and technical competence. It showed me that the best workers are not the ones looking for shortcuts. They are the ones who stay steady, keep learning, and take pride in doing the job right. As a veteran, one of the biggest challenges that has affected my ability to reach my goals has been learning how to move forward while carrying the weight of service-connected struggles. I am a disabled combat veteran, and I live with PTSD and chronic pain. Those things can affect sleep, stress, focus, and energy. Another challenge has been returning to school as an adult while working full-time and taking care of family responsibilities. I am not coming back to school with unlimited free time or no real-world obligations. I am doing it as a husband, worker, and provider who understands the cost of every hour and every dollar. What has helped me overcome those challenges is the same mindset the military helped build in me: stay disciplined, stay grounded, and keep moving forward with purpose. I may not control every hardship, but I do control my effort. Supporting my community does not always look formal or public, but it is a real part of my life. I support my community first through my work. As a utility field technician, I help serve the public in a job that matters to everyday life. I also help newer coworkers when needed and try to lead by example through reliability, professionalism, and a willingness to work. I support my family by staying committed to building a better future for them. I also stay grounded through church and daily devotionals with my wife, which helps keep my priorities in order. This scholarship would support more than my education. It would support a veteran who is still committed to service, still willing to work, and determined to turn discipline, hardship, and experience into something useful for his family and community.

Why should we consider you for this scholarship? You should consider me for this scholarship because I am not pursuing education out of convenience. I am pursuing it out of purpose. I am a combat veteran, a full-time utility field technician, a husband, and an adult student returning to school to build a better future through skilled trade work. I understand what it means to carry responsibility, to work through hardship, and to keep moving forward even when life would make it easier to stand still. My path has not been a straight one. After serving in the United States Air Force, including deployment in support of operations connected to Iraq and the broader war effort of that period, I entered civilian life and worked a range of hands-on jobs. Over time, I learned something important about myself: I am built for work that is practical, demanding, and useful. I have worked as a plumber, maintenance man, tool rental technician, and now as a utility field technician. Those jobs taught me more than technical skill. They taught me how to solve problems under pressure, how to show up consistently, and how to take pride in doing hard work the right way. Today I work full-time for Metro Water, where my job requires field judgment, customer service, technical ability, and accountability. In many ways, that work has reinforced what I already believed: skilled trades matter. They keep communities running. They require discipline, humility, and a willingness to learn. That is a big reason I am pursuing formal training in the electrical field. I do not want to stay where I am out of comfort. I want to keep building. I want to sharpen my skills, increase my value, and create long-term stability for my family. While I may not come from a traditional academic background, I do bring meaningful accomplishments and experience into this next chapter. My academic accomplishment is not that I followed a perfect educational timeline. It is that I am returning now with maturity, direction, and a real sense of purpose. I know why I am here. I know what this education is for. I am not enrolling because it sounds good. I am enrolling because I intend to complete the program, learn the trade well, and turn that training into a dependable career. What makes me stand out is not only my work history, but the mindset behind it. Military service taught me discipline, resilience, and how to perform under stress. Civilian work taught me adaptability and perseverance. Life taught me humility. As a disabled veteran, I have also had to push through challenges related to PTSD and chronic pain. Those struggles are real, but they have not defined me. If anything, they have strengthened my resolve. They have forced me to become more deliberate with my time, more serious about my goals, and more grateful for opportunities to keep moving forward. Outside of work, I stay grounded in family, faith, and creative expression. My wife and I start our mornings early, often around 3:30 or 4:00 a.m., and use part of our drive together for devotionals and reflection before the day begins. That routine helps keep me centered and reminds me that my goals are bigger than myself. I also enjoy music, songwriting, guitar, and hands-on projects that keep me learning and creating. Those interests may seem separate from trade work, but to me they are connected. They all require patience, consistency, and the willingness to improve through repetition. I also believe there is value in the example I set by returning to school now. I am not doing this as a teenager with few responsibilities. I am doing it as a grown man with a full schedule, real obligations, and a family depending on me. That matters. It means I understand the cost of this opportunity. It means I will not waste it. I know what sacrifice looks like, and I know that education is not something to be taken lightly. This scholarship would help relieve some of the financial pressure that comes with balancing work, school, and family life. More importantly, it would help invest in someone who is committed to finishing what he starts. I am not looking for a shortcut. I am looking for the chance to earn the next chapter of my life through training, hard work, and personal responsibility. If selected, this scholarship would support more than just my education. It would support a veteran, a worker, and a family man who is determined to turn discipline and life experience into something lasting. I am ready to do the work, and I would be grateful for the opportunity.

Returning to school as an adult has not been a simple decision for me. It has come with real challenges, real sacrifices, and a lot of hard truth. I am a combat veteran, a full-time utility field technician, a husband, and a man trying to build a better future while still carrying the weight of my past. Going back to school means stepping into a new season of life while still managing the responsibilities, pain, and pressure I already live with every day. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is balancing everything at once. I am not coming back to school straight out of high school with few responsibilities. I am returning as an adult who already has a full life. I work full-time, I have family responsibilities, and I know that education will require even more of my time, energy, and discipline. My days start early, often around 3:30 or 4:00 in the morning. My wife and I even use part of our morning drive for devotionals and to stay grounded before the day begins. That routine reminds me why I am doing this in the first place. I am not chasing school just to say I enrolled somewhere. I am doing it to create a stronger, more stable future for my family. Another challenge has been returning to the classroom mindset after years of military service, work, and life experience. It is one thing to know how to work hard with your hands. It is another thing to shift back into studying, learning new systems, and preparing yourself academically. That adjustment takes humility. I have had to accept that being older does not make me above learning. In fact, it makes me respect it more. I know the value of training now in a way I may not have fully understood when I was younger. I have also had to overcome struggles tied to my service. As a disabled combat veteran, I deal with PTSD and chronic pain. Those are not things I can simply switch off when it is convenient. They affect sleep, stress, focus, and daily life. Even so, I have learned that struggle does not have to stop progress. It just means progress may take more grit, more structure, and more faith. I have had to build discipline into my daily life and keep moving forward even on the hard days. What has helped me overcome these challenges is purpose. I know why I am going back. I want to build a career in the skilled trades that is stable, honorable, and useful. I want to keep growing as a man, provider, and example to my family. Returning to school is not the easiest path for me, but it is the right one. The challenges are real, but so is my determination to overcome them.
