Bio

As a first-generation immigrant from Mexico, my life goals have been shaped by my experiences navigating new cultures, languages, and challenges. My primary goal is to become a dentist, specializing in serving underrepresented communities, particularly within the Hispanic population. I aspire to bridge the gap in oral healthcare by providing culturally competent care and ensuring that Spanish-speaking patients have access to services in their native language. I am most passionate about making a positive impact on my community through public health initiatives and education. This passion has driven me to pursue a B.S. in Public Health, where I have gained a deep understanding of the social determinants of health and the barriers that marginalized communities face in accessing quality care. I am committed to using my knowledge and skills to advocate for those who are often overlooked in the healthcare system. I believe I am a great candidate for this scholarship because of my resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to my goals. My journey has been marked by perseverance in the face of adversity, and I have consistently pushed myself to excel academically while also giving back to my community. This scholarship would not only alleviate the financial burden of my education but also empower me to continue pursuing my dream of becoming a dentist who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

      Dreamers Scholarship
Growing up in Mexico, my life was shaped by constant movement. My mother, sister, and I relocated seven times during my first ten years, never settling in one place for long. This transient lifestyle taught me that stability was a luxury and that friendships were as fleeting as the walls surrounding us. My mother’s "speechless" look became our unspoken language, communicating all the words she didn’t say. Through this silence, I learned resilience and independence—qualities that have profoundly influenced my educational journey. As the youngest in my family, I was often compared to my older sister, Lyan, who seemed to embody the ideal of the "perfect Mexican daughter." While she was praised and pampered, I felt the pressure to follow in her footsteps, striving not just to match her success but to carve out my path. This constant comparison drove me to push myself academically and personally, determined to exceed the expectations set by her accomplishments. Despite the challenges of living in my sister's shadow, I found solace in my passions—science, writing, art, and language. These pursuits allowed me to express my individuality and achieve recognition on my terms. My efforts culminated in winning a state competition in Mexico, but life would soon take a turn when my family immigrated to the United States, forcing me to forgo the regional competition. The transition from Mexico to America was a pivotal moment in my life, marked by a new set of challenges and opportunities. Arriving in the U.S. at the age of eleven, I was thrust into a world where English was the dominant language. I felt like an outsider in my skin, hesitant to participate in a class or make new friends. Over time, I became fluent in English, but the journey was fraught with self-doubt and a lingering fear of making mistakes. However, this experience also instilled in me a deep appreciation for language and the power it holds in shaping our identities and communities. Currently pursuing a B.S. in Public Health as an undergraduate, my experiences as a Mexican immigrant have shaped my educational journey and my future aspirations. I am determined to become a dentist, not just to excel in a field I am passionate about but also to make a meaningful impact on my Hispanic community. I envision a future where I can help bridge the gap in oral healthcare for Spanish-speaking patients, ensuring that they receive care in their native language. By becoming a dentist, I aim to contribute to growing diversity in oral healthcare, advocating for cultural competence, and breaking down language barriers that often hinder access to quality care. This scholarship would significantly impact my education and future by alleviating the financial burden that often accompanies higher education for non-U.S. citizens. It would allow me to focus on my academic goals and pursue opportunities that align with my passions, such as volunteering in public health initiatives that serve underrepresented communities. More importantly, this support would validate the hard work and sacrifices that my family and I have made to reach this point. In conclusion, my journey from Mexico to the U.S. has been one of perseverance, self-discovery, and growth. The challenges I’ve faced have only strengthened my resolve to give back to my community as a future dentist. I am determined to use my education to positively impact the world, honoring the legacy of resilience and determination that my family has instilled in me.
