Growing up in a low-income family is not something anyone should have to go through. As a child, I found myself daydreaming a lot. I didn’t daydream about things like other kids did like becoming a superhero overnight, or being the most popular kid in school. My daydreams were about having a refrigerator full of groceries, or being able to invite my friends to a sleepover in a spacious house. While this isn’t an ideal way of growing up, I do believe it has shaped and stretched my mind to think and live way outside of its limits unlike those who had more privileged upbringings.
As someone who grew up low income, we learn to appreciate the things we have. Whether its having fast food for the first time in a month, or getting a ton of hand me downs from family/friends.Growing up in a low-income household put a profound appreciation inside of me for the simple things in life. We didn't have much, but the laughter around our dinner table, the glow of the tv as we had a family movie night, and the shared stories filled our home with a wealth that money couldn't buy. I learned to find joy in nature's beauty, turning ordinary walks into adventures, and to treasure the hand-me-down books that opened up worlds beyond my reach. These things taught me that true happiness isn't about material possessions but about the love, connection, and gratitude we have in our hearts. It's a lesson I carry with me, reminding me to cherish every moment and find beauty in my everyday life.
At this current point of my life, even though I am still very much facing troubles of growing up low income, I have found that my goals and values are very much so shaped on growing up in a low-income household. Even though I live with a family of 9 in a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house, I have never let it hold me down. It has created a character in me of strong determination and grit. After what I’ve gone through as a child, I see no reason for me to ever give up now. It has made me appreciate life so much more and taught me to have sympathy for others because you never know what they are going through.
This scholarship would help me in so many ways. If I received this scholarship to further my education in college, it would ease the financial burden on my parents. College expenses can be overwhelming, and this money would directly contribute to tuition, books, or other necessary educational materials. By reducing the financial strain on my family, I can focus more on my studies and less on worrying about money.
Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing back about your decision!
