Bio

Hello my name is Daisy and after many years working in the optical world I'm perusing my opticians license. I didn't want to only obtain my license but I also want to have an associates in opticianry. So here I am a mom of two and grandmom of two currently in college. I used to feel I was too old but now that I'm registered and attending classes I can't believe I waited this long. Other than work and school I love to read, it's always been one of my passions. I also love to crochet, I learned in my sophomore year in high school. After reading a Tale of Two Cities, my honors English teacher taught me. This lunchtime commitment to learning how to crochet sparked a lifelong passion for the craft and a lifelong friendship with my former teacher. I just recently learned to fish, though I don't like to use worms to bait. Finally, I've been married for 26 years to my high school boyfriend. I met him 34 years ago and we've been together since.

In the last twenty-seven years I've worked for a few optometrists. In that time I have had the opportunity to learn many things, from the correct terminology to great examples of opticianry. Most of the optometrists I have had the honor to work with and for started as opticians. As I embark in my career as an Ophthalmic Support Service Professional I bring with me all these years of learning from my past and current teachers. I truly wish to make each of them proud while I attempt to make a mark as an optician. I can say with all certainty that I will treat each patient with care and respect as I meet both their needs and wants. I feel a have always had a way with children, therefore I hope to be able to continue to not only advise but to educate them in their individual eye health. I have always been a great believer in early eye protection, so I educate my patients (especially the children) in wearing sunglasses or transitions with anti-reflective coating. I always educate them at some point of the exam the importance of lighting, especially when working on the computer or gaming. As we have done in the past watching tv or playing video games in the dark creates an ambiance. While the ambiance created may make the experience better, it will damage the eyes with time. Therefore I explain to both the parent(s) and children the benefits of protecting ones eye now, I usually tell them "we only have one set, so if you care for them early they will last you forever". At time I feel that most healthcare professional, optician included don't talk to the patient because of age. We will speak to the parent rather than engaging with the patient no matter the age. I'll give you an example I deal with on a daily basis. Most children are afraid of being dilated, WHY?? In most cases they are afraid of the unknown and in other cases they have been forced by either the eyecare professional or the parent. While working with my current optometrist, she will let me dilate the patient (child). I explain the need to dilate and what will happen ever step of the way. If we as eyecare professionals and ophthalmic support service professionals take our time to quickly which effectively explain all aspects, from pre-test to end of sale we basically educate our patients to know every aspect of their individual eye health. This will in turn assist every optician who comes in contact with this patient in the future. The old adage is true "knowledge is power" and by empowering our patient with knowledge about the health of their eyes and what is needed to maintain said health will create an everlasting connection with your patients.
