My academic and career goals are centered on pursuing a degree in Computer Science while also using my skills to help others and serve my community. I am drawn to computer science because it combines problem-solving, logic, and creativity, allowing me to build solutions that can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Technology plays a critical role in today’s world, and I want to be part of the generation that uses it responsibly and compassionately.
One of my primary goals in computer science is to develop strong technical and analytical skills that will prepare me for a career in the technology field. I am interested in learning how software, systems, and applications are designed and how they can be used to improve efficiency and accessibility. Computer science appeals to me because it requires persistence, attention to detail, and critical thinking—qualities I have developed through my academic journey. By earning a degree in this field, I hope to gain the knowledge necessary to contribute to innovative projects and adapt to a constantly evolving technological landscape.
Beyond academics, I want to use my computer science skills to help others. Technology has the power to break down barriers, connect people, and provide resources to those who might not otherwise have access to them. In the future, I hope to work on projects that improve access to information, support education, or make everyday tasks easier for individuals and communities. Whether through developing helpful software, supporting nonprofit organizations with technical needs, or volunteering my skills locally, I want my work to have a positive impact.
Outside of computer science, one of my most important goals is to serve my community and help those around me. I believe success is not only measured by personal achievement but also by how much you contribute to others. I want to be someone who gives back—whether through mentorship, community service, or simply being a reliable and supportive presence. Helping others is something I value deeply, and I plan to carry this mindset into every stage of my life.
Ultimately, my goal is to combine my passion for computer science with a commitment to service. I want to build a career that allows me to grow professionally while also making a difference in the lives of others. By pursuing higher education, continuing to challenge myself, and staying grounded in my values, I hope to use both my skills and my character to contribute positively to my community and beyond.
Selective Mutism Step Forward Scholarship
My name is Drew, and I am a senior at Liberty University Online Academy. One experience that has shaped who I am and makes me unique is living with selective mutism and social anxiety. From an early age, social situations—especially traditional classroom environments—were extremely challenging for me. Speaking in front of others or participating in in-person discussions often caused intense anxiety, which made learning in a conventional school setting difficult. These challenges affected not only how I communicated but also how I experienced education as a whole.
Because of this, transitioning to an online high school environment at Liberty University Online Academy was a turning point in my academic journey. Online learning provided a space where I could focus on my education without the constant pressure of in-person social interaction. This environment allowed me to grow academically while also working on my mental health. It helped me build confidence in my abilities, develop independence, and take ownership of my learning. While online school removed certain barriers, it also required strong self-discipline, time management, and perseverance—skills that I worked hard to develop and strengthen.
Throughout this journey, therapy and the unwavering support of my family have played a critical role in my growth. Through therapy, I have learned effective coping strategies to manage anxiety, build communication skills, and gradually step outside of my comfort zone. My family’s encouragement has given me the confidence to believe in myself and my ability to face challenges head-on. Together, these supports have helped me make meaningful progress and prepare for the next stage of my education.
I now feel ready to take on the challenge of attending college in person. While I know it will require continued effort and courage, I am confident in the tools I have developed and the growth I have achieved. I see college not only as an academic opportunity but also as a chance to continue building confidence, independence, and meaningful connections.
I plan to major in Computer Science because it aligns well with my strengths and interests. I enjoy logical thinking, problem-solving, and working with technology. Computer science allows me to focus deeply, think critically, and create solutions—skills I have refined through my educational experiences and personal challenges.
Overall, my journey with selective mutism and social anxiety has taught me resilience, determination, and self-awareness. Choosing to continue my education and prepare for an in-person college experience reflects how far I have come. I am proud of my progress and excited to move forward, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities with confidence.
