      Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college student has shaped both who I am and the path I am determined to follow. Growing up, no one in my family had walked the path of higher education, so I learned early that I would have to navigate the challenges of school, applications, and finances largely on my own. While this was daunting, it also fueled my determination to succeed and make opportunities for myself where none existed before. Being first-generation has taught me resilience, self-reliance, and the value of hard work lessons that continue to drive me every day as I pursue my degree and plan for a career in law. My journey has not been easy. After serving eight years in the U.S. Army, I transitioned to civilian life, which brought its own challenges: finding direction, balancing work, and returning to school after years away from a classroom. I’ve had to learn new skills, manage my time carefully, and rebuild confidence in myself academically and professionally. Every obstacle from financial limitations to adapting to civilian life has reinforced my commitment to education and my future career as a lawyer or judge. I want to advocate for others, particularly those who, like me, face challenges navigating systems without guidance or support. This scholarship would bring me one step closer to achieving my goals by reducing the financial stress that comes with being a first-generation student. It would allow me to focus more fully on my studies, participate in opportunities that enhance my professional growth, and continue serving my community. Scholarships like this are not just financial support they are an investment in my future, my potential, and my ability to give back to others. Ultimately, being a first-generation student means carrying the responsibility of breaking a cycle and creating a path for others to follow. It means turning challenges into motivation and using every lesson learned as fuel for growth. My dreams of becoming a lawyer or judge are driven by a desire to serve, to protect, and to empower others, especially those who may feel overlooked or unsupported. This scholarship is more than financial aid it is a bridge to achieving those dreams and making a meaningful impact in my community and beyond.
      Phoenix Opportunity Award
Being a first-generation college student has profoundly shaped my perspective on education and my career goals. Growing up, I didn’t have parents or family members who could guide me through the process of applying for college, navigating financial aid, or understanding what it takes to succeed academically. This lack of guidance could have been a barrier, but instead, it became a source of motivation. I learned early on that I would have to pave my own path, make my own opportunities, and rely on my determination and resilience to achieve my dreams. My experiences as a first-generation student have strengthened my desire to pursue a career in law. I want to become a lawyer or judge to advocate for people who may not have the resources, guidance, or voice to navigate complex systems. Seeing the challenges my family faced, and understanding how access to education and legal resources can transform lives, has made me committed to helping others overcome obstacles and achieve justice. Being the first in my family to attend college has also taught me the importance of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. I approach my studies at Gaston College with focus and dedication, balancing coursework, work, and other responsibilities while maintaining a strong GPA. These experiences have prepared me for the rigor of law school and a professional career in the legal field. Ultimately, being a first-generation college student fuels my ambition to create opportunities not only for myself but also for others. It has instilled in me a sense of responsibility to give back, mentor, and inspire those who follow behind me. This perspective will guide me in my future career, as I work to ensure that others have access to the tools, resources, and guidance necessary to succeed, just as I have fought to do for myself.
      Community College Matters Scholarship
Growing up, I always admired the people in my life who worked hard to overcome challenges, whether in school, work, or family life. My own path has not been straightforward, and the experiences I’ve had have profoundly shaped my decision to pursue higher education at a community college. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army for eight years as a Nodal Network Systems Operator-Maintainer, I faced the challenge of transitioning back to civilian life. While my military service gave me discipline, leadership skills, and technical expertise, it also showed me that education is a powerful tool for creating new opportunities and securing a stable future. Returning to school at Gaston College has been a transformative experience. As a student in the Information Technology – Networking and Cyber Defense program, I’ve gained hands-on experience in network security, cybersecurity fundamentals, and systems administration. Balancing my studies with work and other responsibilities has taught me resilience, time management, and determination. These experiences have reinforced my belief that education is not just about earning a degree but also about building the skills and mindset necessary to thrive in any field. My ultimate goal is to continue my education beyond my associate degree and pursue a career in law. I aspire to become a lawyer or judge, advocating for justice and serving my community by using the analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills I honed in the military and through my college studies. Community college has been a critical stepping stone toward this goal, providing accessible education, mentorship, and the flexibility to balance school with other life responsibilities. Attending community college has also allowed me to give back to others in small ways, such as mentoring fellow students and volunteering in the local community. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to lifelong learning and helping others achieve their potential. Ultimately, my time at community college is not only preparing me for future academic and professional success but also shaping me into a responsible, service-oriented individual ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

I am a U.S. Army veteran with eight years of service as a Nodal Network Systems Operator-Maintainer (25N), where I led teams, trained soldiers, and ensured accountability and readiness for groups of up to 50 personnel. During my time in the Army, I also taught driver training, helping soldiers gain critical skills while emphasizing safety, responsibility, and discipline. These experiences sparked my passion for teaching and mentorship, as I realized how much impact education can have on individuals and communities. I want to help students understand not only legal concepts but also how law affects their daily lives, their communities, and society as a whole. Teaching law allows me to combine my skills in leadership, communication, and mentorship with my passion for justice. In the Army, I learned how to explain complex information in a clear and engaging way a skill I can transfer to the classroom. I also understand the importance of patience, adaptability, and individualized guidance, as every student learns differently and comes from diverse backgrounds. My goal is to create a learning environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making, preparing students to be informed citizens and future leaders. I hope to make a positive impact on the world by equipping my students with knowledge, confidence, and the tools to advocate for themselves and others. By teaching law, I can empower the next generation to navigate challenges responsibly and contribute to a more just society. After separating honorably in 2022, I faced the challenge of restarting my civilian life and redefining my career path. Transitioning from military service to civilian life was not easy. I had to navigate a world very different from the structured environment of the Army, and I quickly realized that pursuing higher education was essential to achieving my long-term goals. Returning to school became a way to rebuild my skills, expand my knowledge, and prepare myself for a meaningful career where I could continue to serve others, this time through law and justice. Sunflower Seeds Scholarship
Being in Poland during the early stages of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a life changing experience that shaped my understanding of resilience, global conflict, and the importance of education in creating meaningful change. I was there when President Biden and U.S. officials faced intense debates about whether to intervene militarily. The uncertainty, fear, and tension in the region were palpable. Seeing firsthand the anxiety of local communities, refugees fleeing their homes, and the geopolitical instability surrounding us made the war feel deeply personal, even though I was not Ukrainian. It impressed upon me the fragility of peace and the profound effects that conflict has on families, communities, and nations. The war has impacted me personally in several ways. Living in Poland during this time meant navigating heightened security, managing uncertainty about travel and safety, and witnessing the suffering of those displaced by war. It reinforced my appreciation for stability and highlighted how quickly circumstances can change for ordinary people. I also saw how ordinary citizens and volunteers stepped up to support refugees, providing food, shelter, and care for families who had lost everything. Their courage and selflessness inspired me to reflect on how I could contribute to my community and prepare myself to be a leader in times of crisis. Achieving my educational goals is central to my ability to respond effectively to such challenges. I am pursuing a degree in law, aiming to become a lawyer or judge. This path empowers me to advocate for justice, defend vulnerable populations, and work toward solutions in a world where conflict and instability remain realities. By gaining knowledge of legal systems, international law, and policy, I will be equipped to help individuals, families, and communities navigate complex situations caused by crises, both locally and globally. Education provides the tools to create meaningful impact, not only for myself but also for others affected by war or social upheaval. This scholarship would help remove financial barriers and allow me to focus fully on my studies and long-term goals. With your support, I can continue building the skills, knowledge, and resilience necessary to serve my community and advocate for justice. I want to empower others by using my education to influence positive change, whether through legal advocacy, mentorship, or community initiatives. Witnessing the hardships caused by war firsthand strengthened my resolve to use my education as a platform for action and leadership. In conclusion, being in Poland during Russia’s war in Ukraine was a deeply formative experience. It reinforced the importance of resilience, awareness, and preparation in the face of global crises. By pursuing my education in law, I am taking concrete steps to overcome the challenges I’ve witnessed and contribute meaningfully to my community, my country, and potentially the international community. This scholarship is more than financial support it is an investment in the future of someone committed to justice, service, and making a difference in the world.
      College Connect Resilience Award
Resilience, to me, means the ability to face challenges, adapt, and continue moving forward even when circumstances feel overwhelming. Living with a chronic condition while pursuing a college degree has tested my resilience in ways I could not have anticipated. There are days when my energy is low, pain is high, or appointments and treatments interfere with my schoolwork. Yet, I have learned that resilience is not about never struggling, it is about finding ways to persist, maintain focus, and continue striving toward your goals despite setbacks. As a college student, resilience shows up in my daily routines. I carefully plan my schedule to balance classes, assignments, medical care, and personal responsibilities. When fatigue or health issues make completing tasks difficult, I adjust my approach rather than giving up. For example, I break larger projects into smaller, manageable steps, seek support from professors or classmates when needed, and celebrate small achievements along the way. These strategies allow me to stay on track academically while taking care of my health. My military service also shaped my understanding of resilience. As a U.S. Army veteran, I faced demanding situations that required discipline, adaptability, and mental toughness. I learned to push through physically and mentally challenging environments while maintaining accountability to my team. Today, I apply the same mindset to managing my chronic condition and my education. Each obstacle I overcome reinforces my belief that persistence, planning, and a positive attitude can turn difficulties into opportunities for growth. Living with a chronic condition has also taught me empathy and the importance of supporting others who face challenges. I strive to inspire my peers by showing that setbacks do not define your potential. By sharing my experiences, I hope to encourage fellow students, particularly those facing health difficulties, to continue pursuing their goals and to believe in their ability to succeed despite obstacles. Ultimately, resilience for me is about perseverance, adaptability, and maintaining hope in the face of adversity. It is about showing up every day with determination, using challenges as motivation, and remaining committed to long-term goals. This scholarship would support my continued pursuit of higher education by alleviating financial stress, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and personal growth. With this support, I can continue to demonstrate resilience in my life and inspire others to do the same.
      Poynter Scholarship
Balancing education with the responsibilities of being a single parent has been one of the greatest challenges and most important motivators in my life. As a parent, I am committed to providing stability, support, and guidance to my child while also pursuing my goal of earning a degree in Information Technology, with the long-term aspiration of entering the legal field as a lawyer or judge. Each day requires careful planning, time management, and determination to ensure I am present for both my child and my studies. I have learned that flexibility and discipline are key to managing these dual responsibilities. My experience as a U.S. Army veteran has prepared me well for this balancing act. In the military, I was responsible for the accountability, readiness, and development of teams of up to 50 soldiers. I learned to manage schedules, adapt to unexpected challenges, and prioritize tasks without losing sight of long-term goals. These same skills now allow me to organize my days to include quality time with my child, completing coursework, and pursuing internships and opportunities that build toward my career. I have created a structured routine that ensures I am fully engaged both as a parent and a student. Early mornings and late evenings are dedicated to study and assignments, while afternoons are focused on my child’s needs, including school, extracurricular activities, and emotional support. Weekends are reserved for quality family time, household responsibilities, and additional study when necessary. While this schedule is demanding, it keeps me accountable and provides my child with a strong example of dedication, resilience, and the importance of education. Scholarships like this one play a crucial role in my ability to maintain this balance. Financial support would relieve the stress of tuition costs, allowing me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies and parenting responsibilities. It would also open doors to additional resources, such as academic programs, workshops, and professional development opportunities, which will help me strengthen my skills and move closer to my goal of a successful career in IT and law. Receiving this scholarship would not only help me achieve my educational goals but also empower me to create a brighter future for my family. By pursuing my degree and working toward a career in law, I will be able to provide stability, serve as a role model, and demonstrate to my child the value of perseverance, education, and service to others. Additionally, I intend to pay this support forward by mentoring other single parents who face similar challenges, offering guidance and encouragement to help them succeed in both their personal and professional lives. Balancing education and parenting is challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding. Through careful planning, unwavering commitment, and support from opportunities like this scholarship, I am confident that I can succeed academically, raise my child with strong values, and build a career that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
      Second Chance Scholarship
When I left the U.S. Army after eight years of service, I faced a new challenge: navigating civilian life while figuring out my purpose beyond the uniform. The Army taught me discipline, leadership, and accountability, but I realized that to continue making an impact, I needed a different platform one where I could fight for justice, fairness, and the rule of law. That is why I decided to pursue a career in law, with the ultimate goal of becoming a lawyer or judge. I have already taken steps to move toward this goal. I enrolled at Gaston College, pursuing an A.A.S. in Information Technology, focusing on problem-solving, critical thinking, and structured analysis, skills that translate directly to the legal field. Alongside school, I work self-employed operations and logistics contracts to support myself financially. Balancing work, leadership roles in the American Legion and VFW, and full-time coursework has reinforced my resilience, perseverance, and organizational skills; qualities I know will serve me well in law school and beyond. This scholarship would bring me closer to achieving my goals. As a veteran and first-generation student, finances are one of the biggest obstacles to pursuing higher education. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus on completing my undergraduate degree, preparing for law school, and investing in the necessary resources for academic success, including test preparation and application costs. More than money, this scholarship would symbolize support for my ambition to fight for justice and advocate for others, motivating me to continue striving toward excellence. I also want to pay it forward. Throughout my military and civilian life, I have mentored peers, guided fellow veterans, and supported community initiatives. In the future, I plan to mentor students—especially those from underrepresented communities helping them navigate the path to higher education, scholarships, and professional careers. As a lawyer or judge, I hope to advocate for those who may not have a voice, ensuring fairness and equality under the law, and inspiring others to overcome challenges and pursue their own dreams. Ultimately, my goal is not just a career, it is a mission to serve my community and uphold justice. The discipline and leadership I homed in the military, combined with the education I am pursuing today, set me on a path to make a meaningful impact in the legal field. This scholarship would provide the support I need to continue my journey and strengthen my ability to lift others along the way.
