Bio

Throughout my high school career, I experienced the vulnerabilities of mental health firsthand, given that being a Mexican American boy who attends therapy isn’t commonly heard of, but I knew it was what I needed to continue powering through with ease. After various sessions and communication with teachers, God’s endless compassion and spiritual guidance, and my family’s persistent support, I began to ease up. My perseverance never diminished as I am currently the Salutatorian of my class, and it is undoubtedly overwhelming yet incredibly exciting to reflect on the little time left of my high school journey. I hope to graduate with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering while also minoring in Physics to earn an additional master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. I desire to contribute to engineering initiatives intended to innovate the world by working with major aircraft companies such as Lockheed Martin or Boeing. Embracing my individuality has been accompanied by breakdowns and build-ups, but most importantly, the passion for what I aspire to do with my potential remains untouched. Mechanical engineering makes room for trial and error by constantly learning through experience and gaining insight to gradually flourish through creative freedom, interdisciplinary work, and advanced techniques; pursuing a field that has been walked through by someone as noteworthy as my dad is a constant honor by being able to follow in his footsteps and a motivating factor to achieve similar outstanding success.

Tom LoCasale Developing Character Through Golf Scholarship
Fore! Apologies if I startled you - it is a phrase often shouted by amateur golfers when their golf ball veers dangerously close to the group ahead. While it may seem humorous, this moment can quickly become awkward or even tense if misunderstood and poorly communicated. However, those who truly appreciate the complexities of golf know that this type of unwarranted situation requires patience, tranquility, and understanding of the game's difficulty. Similarly, golf is frequently misunderstood and mistakenly believed to be a slow-paced, simple pastime, but beneath that surface lies a sport that demands tenacity, mental resilience, physical control, and a strong sense of discipline, as each swing requires precision and confidence in noting your athletic capabilities. An infinite number of moving pieces are involved in a round of golf; each time you head out to play a new, exciting round, your focus and composure are put to the test, especially as you navigate the mental strain of mistakes, physical fatigue, unpredictable weather, and the ever-changing course conditions. What many do not realize is how much golf mirrors life itself. From staying calm, cool, and collected under pressure to learning from setbacks, golf continuously teaches lessons about growth, character, and the creative foundation of three tenets: dedication, integrity, and perseverance (represented by the acronym DIP) that single-handedly uphold the golf program at the high school I currently attend. It is through these moments in my high school journey as an excelling student athlete, comprised of frustration, achievements, and individual progression, that I have come to realize the biggest lesson golf has taught me is recognizing how perfection is quite unfathomable to truly attain which is why it is important to know how to embrace one's imperfections and flaws both on and off the course. There have been countless times when I have poorly executed a shot out on the course that was far from what I intended or visualized, or when I was striking the ball exceptionally well with every single one of my clubs during the summer and believed I would finally be able to break 90 in my final season of high school golf. Yet, I gradually underwent a slump that dreadfully affected my self-assurance and mentality, tragically believing I had failed myself, my golf coach, and my golf teammates (who I consider an extremely caring, supportive family). Nevertheless, that is exactly why I arduously enjoy playing this sport, because it immediately humbles you by deceiving you into thinking you have peaked in your abilities and understanding of its elaborate framework, but reminds you that having a seamless, most ideal round of golf is unlikely ever to be attained as mistakes are imminent to be committed since you encounter unprecedented factors that affect your performance in both a clear and underlying manner. If I had never decided to play such an intricate, elaborate, game, I would certainly not be the current Salutatorian of my high school class, nor would I have progressed into the determined, mature individual I am to this day, because I have progressively learned through careful introspection facilitated by playing this sport how to utilize my failures, mistakes, and adversity in both my personal and academic life as fuel rather than discouragement in encouraging me to keep practicing, work hard, and continue to seek fulfilling my hopes, ambitions, and desires. All in all, golf has taught me to embrace my flaws and imperfections, ultimately emphasizing that growth, fulfillment, and resilience are born not from letting failure overwhelm you but from learning to endure it gracefully through profound reflection with a refined mentality to achieve self-improvement.
