Hi, my name is Drake Chavez, and I'm a high school senior at Center High School. I have a passion for Automotive Mechanics, and dreamed of becoming an automotive technician one day. My dream school has been Lincoln College of Technology in Denver. Gladly I have been accepted to my dream school, and will be going in the fall of 2026. I hope to get a few scholarships to pursue my dream, and be able to afford books, tools, uniform, and tuition. Once I'm done with my education at Lincoln Tech I would like to open my own high end shop.

What my specific plans for next year is to find a seasonal job here in the valley for 2 months. I would like to work those two months so I could build up more money for tuition which is 35,000 thousand. Before I leave for Denver for school I will look for a good part time job, but at least a month before I leave. Also I hope to have my own apartment by that time. Which I most likely will since I'm looking now.
My specific career plans are to become an Automotive Technician and Diesel Mechanic. I plan to get my certificate at Lincoln College of Technology in Denver Colorado. Where I will be studying both automotive and diesel mechanics. But the only thing is I have to do both programs one at a time. After I pursue my education at Lincoln Tech I want to work for a dealership, get management experience and open my own mechanic shop one day.
How I am going to be a vital contributor to the world is when I have to do the yearly check ups on semi trucks. Also being able to fix cars around my community, and being able to fix semis that transport goods around the world. Also so the truck driver can have a safe trip.
How I can make a difference in the so-called changing world is to have less semi truck accidents, and less problems for truckers while on the road. The reason why I want to become an automotive, and diesel mechanic is because I like challenges. Also I had grown up around the car industry, and loved cars my whole life and hope to work on super cars one day. During my studies at Lincoln Tech, the two obstacles I am going to face, and overcome are having to take the programs I want once at a time. Another obstacle is going to be looking for a good job in Aurora. I do have options, and am working towards getting my apartment up there. I will overcome those obstacles by looking for part time jobs two months before I leave, and I will have to deal with having to take one program at a time. Also one more year at Lincoln Tech won’t hurt.

I am passionate about pursuing a career in automotive mechanics because I like cars a lot, and the way an engine works. I want to become a good mechanic and fix people cars in Center, CO. Which we need a tuner here, and I want to impact my community by opening my own shop one day. Being an automotive technician has been a dream of mine since a freshmen, when I first started learning mechanic work. What made me want to pursue a career in automotive mechanics was being able to get spark out of the first engine I worked on. It felt good to be able to fix the engine problem, but I did run into an obstacle.
This obstacle I faced was not getting any spark the first time I put the engine back together. I was confused, and so were my partners. I had went to my teacher, and made us take it apart and during the process. We found that we didn't time the piston right, so we had to take it off the crankshaft to do it again. This time we timed it right by seeing that there's marks on the gears which we didn't know. We put the engine back together, and tried for spark again.
Then we happen to not get spark again, and we took the engine apart again. But not to much because along the way we found that we didn't tighten the springs, and valves. Which the other thing was the tops were on backwards. So we loosened the bolts and flipped it put bolts back on. Then we put it back together and towards the end we got confused with the electrical stuff.
Which we should've listened to the tip our teacher gave us at first. Which was to take pictures, and was an instant regret. But I figured it out at the end with the help from the teacher. It was a lot of mistakes made, and learned and worth the work. When finished I was happy, but hoping the engine will have spark. We turned off the light in the shop, and we pulled the spark plug off. Put it on metal and my teacher had me pull the string that started it. Then boom we saw the spark, and I got happy. It was a challenge building an engine my first time, but I did it and enjoyed doing it.

I am applying for this scholarship because, it would help get closer to my dream of becoming a auto mechanic. Also will help pay tuition at Lincoln Tech. I want to be an auto mechanic because I like a challenge, and always enjoyed doing automotive work with my dad. Another reason why I want to be an automotive mechanic is having the love for cars, and enjoy the way an engine works. After I get my automotive certificate, I'd like to study Diesel mechanics. I think it would be good to know both, and one day open a high end shop working one both automotive, and diesel vehicles. I mainly would like to work on cars though, and dream of working on sport cars. With supercharged engines, and want to build my own. I want to have a good amount of experience, like years experience. So I could be a pit mechanic for some races. My biggest goal for the mechanic world is to work on an F1 car engine. It would be an honor to make it that far in the mechanic world.
How I plan to make an impact in the future is to open my shop in my community. In the San Luis Valley, but in Center. We are in need of a lot of automotive, and diesel mechanics in the Valley. So I hope me entering the mechanic field impacts my community, and be able to cars, and diesel trucks for company's, or people. Another thing that will impact the future is there will still be automotive mechanics around, and hope a little longer before the electric cars start evolving. I hope the muscle car, and engine powered cars live on. The culture is nothing but beauty, and the project that you build. Becomes more than just a car, and realizing that me doing mechanic work with my dad had made us closer. I really enjoy doing automotive mechanic work. It helps with my mental health problems, and keeps me from overthinking things from the past. I hope to one day be a great mechanic, and go achieve my goals. This has been a dream of mine since I became a freshmen, and worked on my first engine. It was a learning process, but I managed to get spark on it. Felt good to get spark to it, really made me smile, and enjoyed the challenge I achieved working on a motor.

What makes me excited about pursing trade school is the hands on training, and being able to get a certificate. Within 2 years or even less then that like 8 months, or a year. The trade that I am going to be pursuing is Automotive technician, and diesel mechanic. I had love for cars growing up, and liked to challenge myself with situations. That are fixable, and hard to accomplish, but still find a way to fix it. I love the engineering, and electrical stuff that goes in a car and diesel trucks. The goals I have once I graduate from the trade school I'm going to is to work for a dealership, or truck company, and see managing experience. Then hope to one day open up my own high end shop. Ran by both diesel and automotive mechanics.
Uniball's Skilled Trades Scholarship
The trade I am pursuing is automotive technician. I am passionate about becoming an automotive technician because I had always loved cars, and always wanted to build a project car. Also I wanted to be able to repair my own car incase of a problem happens. I also come from a family full of mechanics, and want to keep our family tradition going. I remember I started off not knowing anything about what goes on in a car, and thought it wasn't for me at first. Then I ended up liking mechanic work, and the more I did it the more happy I felt doing mechanic work. I have mental health problems losing my mind, and high axiety, but every time I work on a car my thoughts, and problems seem to go away.
What I have planned in the future after my trade education is to work at a dealership, and continue to study. Except its going to be diesel mechanics only because I want to know both automotive, and diesel. Be able to work on both at a dealership, and get a cdl to be able to truck a bit. After a while I want to go work for some ones shop, and learn how to manage a shop. Also want to see how flat pay works, and hope to one day open up my own high end mechanic shop. In my shop I want to be able to work on both automotive and diesel cars including semi's, buses, and tractors. After having my shop open for a couple of years I would like to be a pit mechanic for a while since I will have a lot of experience. But will want to upgrade from automotive, and diesel one day, and pursue my last dream of knowing how to work on a F1 car.
A time in my life I overcame an obstacle is when I was working on my truck. It was honestly recently. What I was doing was changing the spark plugs in my truck since they were worn out. I started to take the coils off, and the spark plugs after. It was going all good until I got to the last spark plug I had to remove. It was hard to loosen up, like it was tight, and each time I'd pull it wouldn't move. So I had decided to use a post and put the wrench in it. Which yes it had moved a bit. But once I pulled again, the spark plug broke. I didn't know what to do after so I froze up thinking. Called my dad asked what to do, and he told me I'm going to have to remove the head. So that I did, and once I got the head off. I had used an allen wrench, and got it stuck in there. After I used plyers to be able to turn the wrench, and finally I got it out gladly.
