Upon completion of my nursing education, my overarching mission is to infuse healthcare with a profound sense of kindness and establish genuine connections with the patients under my care. I firmly believe that investing time to understand each patient's unique story not only fosters trust but also cultivates a positive and collaborative healthcare experience. Kindness stands at the core of my personal values, driven by the belief that a single act of compassion, no matter how modest, can significantly impact an individual's journey. Guided by the timeless "golden rule" instilled in me by my parents—to treat others as I would like to be treated—I am committed to upholding the principles of empathy and understanding in my nursing practice. My aspiration to become a nurse was significantly influenced by a childhood experience where I required emergency hospital care after a dog attack. Despite the traumatic nature of the incident, the kindness and genuine interest displayed by the nurses left an indelible mark on me. Their ability to connect on a personal level and show genuine concern for my well-being inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. I am determined to pay forward the compassion I received during that challenging time. In the short term, I embarked on a summer nurse externship to gain hands-on experience and further hone my skills in spreading kindness and building genuine connections with patients. This externship served as a valuable stepping stone, allowing me to apply classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios and deepen my understanding of patient care. Looking ahead, my long-term goal is to specialize as a pediatric nurse, dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the lives of children and their families. Dora Weihe Dlyweihe@gmail.com When thinking of someone special who has inspired me to go back to school, the person I think of is my mom. She has always been my biggest cheerleader in my life, through the good times and the bad times, she has always been there. She was there when I was 4 years old and I broke my arm while playing on the monkey bars while it was raining when I woke her in the middle of the night when of felt like I could not breathe, she took care of me when I had pneumonia, and when I was diagnosis with Asthma as a small child. She was there to help me with my breathing treatments with my nebulizer and researched the best care and doctors for my fragile condition. She was there when I was diagnosed with Dyslexia and I struggled in school when learning to read, when I needed braces, and sacrificed monthly payments for me to get my teeth straighten. She was there when I was twelve years old, and I got attacked by a dog, causing me to need emergency surgery and a week’s hospital stay. She was there when I did not make the varsity cheerleading team and encouraged me to try a new sport, and when I made the volleyball team! She was there when I went off to college, for the first time, when I was 18 years old, moving to a new city all on my own. She was there helping me move back into her house at the age of 25 after a falling out with a best friend and roommate. She has been there when I decided to go back to school in my thirties to pursue a career in nursing. She has helped support me emotionally and financially through the challenges of nursing school. Through it all, she has always been there for me. My mom is a very special and unique person. She has been an elementary school teacher for the last 20 years and through that process she has created many friendships and connections with her students and parents, as well as other teachers. I used to joke that if I went anywhere with my mom, even out of town, she would always manage to either run into someone she knew or make friends with a stranger. She is welcoming, friendly, and open to all walks of life and new people. I believe I learned this trait from her as I too try to be welcoming and friendly to new people. Not only has she taught me about being kind and welcoming to others, and to have all-around “good energy” when meeting new people, but she has also taught me about unconditional love. She is not only a mother to me, but a mother to my sister and brother and a wife to my father. She is the glue to our family, holding us all together, helping us, nurturing, and caring. I am eternally grateful to have her in my life and as my mom and I know I would not be where I am today without her. Thank you so much for this opportunity to share my mom’s efforts to make my life richer and I know if I am ever a mother, I will have some big shoes to fill to be like her. I would be honored to receive this scholarship to help pay for my school's tuition to aid in my learning and goal of becoming a pediatric nurse.

When I was twelve years old, I got attacked by a dog during a Girl Scout barbecue. That was my first experience where I needed hospital care. My mom rushed me to the hospital as fast as possible, where I was brought into the emergency room. The staff and nurses there were shocked to see me in my condition. The dog bit through my left arm, breaking it, and underneath my left breast. The accident required emergency surgery, stitches on my open wounds, and a one-week hospital stay to recover. I remember being terrified that I would not wake up after being put under anesthesia, scared to get stitches, and sad to miss the last few weeks of 6th grade. Luckily, I woke up with my mom by my side the following day, wearing stitches I didn't remember getting and a hot pink cast on my arm. Although this was a traumatic time, I remember the nurses I had during my stay. They made me feel unique, secure and welcomed. They would leave little drawings of flowers, puppies, and the Dora the Explorer cartoon character in my room, making each day more exciting and personal. They were always on time when I needed more medication while in pain and always found time in their busy schedule to make sure I was comfortable and happy. I began to admire these women who were so kind to me during this difficult time. This experience when I was younger has helped shape me and inspired me to be a nurse to help others in need and give back. There are many ways I can make a difference by becoming a nurse. A good nurse can physically and emotionally support patients and their families during hard times. Nurses have a natural ability to show compassion, empathy, and respect to their patients. I would treat my patients as individuals and listen to their needs. I would communicate recommended treatment options and preventive solutions to aid their recovery. By showing a hardworking commitment to my patients, I would help them feel comfortable in my care, ultimately gaining their trust and making a connection with them. I incorporate optimism into each day. I regularly engage in small acts of kindness to my friends, family, and coworkers. I believe that even minor gestures can significantly impact those who are down, as these have also lifted me when I was in need. By applying this mindset to patient recovery, I can help lift spirits and calm patients' fears. In conclusion, I am devoted to becoming a nurse. I would make a great nurse because of my patience, desire to help others, and determination to make a difference. I want to be proud of what I do every day, and I am eager to continue this journey. With such intense passion, I believe nursing is my calling and I am on my way!

Mental illness has had a profound impact on me and my family, shaping our lives in ways we never anticipated. It's a subject that carries stigma and misunderstanding, yet it's a reality many face. My own struggle with mental illness began in my late teens, a time when life is often seen as full of promise and potential. Instead, I found myself navigating the tumultuous waters of anxiety and depression. Simple tasks felt overwhelming, and the joy that once accompanied my accomplishments seemed to evaporate. I felt isolated as if my mind was betraying me. This, in turn, affected my family. They witnessed my struggles and did their best to support me, but it wasn't easy for them either. It's heartbreaking to see a loved one suffer, to feel helpless in the face of their pain. They wanted to understand, but the stigma surrounding mental health made it challenging to open up about what I was experiencing. We embarked on a journey together, seeking therapy, researching coping mechanisms, and learning to communicate openly. This process was difficult but necessary. It brought us closer, reinforcing the importance of empathy, patience, and resilience. It also sheds light on the need for greater awareness and acceptance of mental health issues in society. Through the years, my family has been my anchor, providing a safe space where I could confront my struggles and heal. They learned about mental health, unlearning harmful misconceptions, and showing me that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. They became allies, not just for me, but for countless others facing similar battles. Our experience prompted us to advocate for mental health awareness, breaking the silence that often surrounds it. We participated in local support groups, shared our stories, and became vocal proponents for accessible mental health resources in our community. It's essential to create an environment where those struggling with mental illness can reach out without fear of judgment. While mental illness has been a challenging aspect of our lives, it has also been a catalyst for growth, understanding, and compassion. It has made us more resilient, fostering a deeper connection between us. Our journey taught us that healing isn't linear; it's a continuous process, and we must be patient with ourselves and each other. Mental illness can be isolating, but it doesn't define us. It's part of our story, a chapter that has shaped us, but not one that dictates our entire narrative. By sharing our experiences and advocating for mental health, we hope to create a world where others feel empowered to seek help and find the support they need, knowing they are not alone in their struggles.
    Eras Tour Farewell Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift is an artist that I have grown up listening to, and I feel as if Taylor and I have grown up together in a sense. I went to my first Taylor Swift concert back in 2009 for her debut album Taylor Swift when I was sixteen years old. For me, Taylor's music has always brought me comfort through difficult times, whether a break-up, moving away to college for the first time, going through my first heartbreak, and my most recent journey of surviving nursing school. Fall 2022 was the beginning of my first semester of nursing school, and I turned to Taylor's music to help calm my nerves, hype myself up for clinical, cry over a difficult exam, and belt out the lyrics after a stressful day. Finding out that Taylor was going to do another tour, let alone A Eras tour with all her previous music, I knew no matter what I needed to be at that concert. Luckily for me, Atlanta was one of her stops and my good friend Cherlee was able to score us two tickets for her Friday, April 28th show. We were so excited!!! The constant grind of all the schoolwork and exams had me feeling extremely stressed, and this concert couldn't come at a better time as it was the week before final exams. The buildup and excitement for this concert gave me the motivation to keep pushing and try harder to be successful. Once it was time to attend, experiencing the concert that night was pure magic, almost electric. Everyone, there was having the time of their lives too and everyone in the crowd was ecstatic. I believe my biggest takeaway from this experience is always taking necessary mental breaks to help fill up your soul, especially during difficult times. Life can be stressful, and nursing school is not easy, but you can not forget to take care of yourself and do things for yourself that make you feel good without guilt. I truly believe I did better on my final exams the next week because I took the night off from studying and went to sing my heart out at the Taylor Swift Era's tour. I will be forever grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and this opportunity as I have enjoyed expressing how Taylor's music makes me feel and has helped me learn vital lessons that I will take with me in my life.

I am so excited to start this journey and receiving this scholarship would greatly benefit me in my studies while in school. This scholarship would impact me greatly and relieve some financial burdens during my school semester. If I was selected it would truly mean the world to me. Thank you so much for considering me for this opportunity.
    Healthy Eating Scholarship
Hello, My name is Dora Weihe and I am a 31-year-old nursing student. I believe it is essential to have healthy eating habits to lead a healthy lifestyle to support the body and the mind's well-being. I can feel a difference when I eat junk food, fash food, and sweets like ice cream, candy, and chocolate. When I overindulge I find to see that I crave more sugary foods, and it's hard to stop eating sugar. I feel I have low energy levels all day and I have a hard time focusing at work and school. As a nursing student, I need to have cognitive stamina as the school days are long and there is a lot of important information we are learning. We have clinical hours where we are working 12-hour shifts and we need to have enough energy to make it through the entire shift without crashing. As well as I don't feel full or satisfied with these foods. I believe the foods you put into your body reflect the way your body will function and the way your body and mind will feel. When I eat a well-balanced meal that includes protein-rich lean meat or fish, my favorite being salmon, paired with a fresh vegetable, like asparagus, I feel satisfied after I eat. A balanced diet also helps me to maintain a healthy weight for myself and reduce the risk of obesity. As well as, lowering my risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Nutrient-rich foods impact my mood and overall mental health because my mind feels refreshed and I am not grumpy. Healthy foods are good for immune health as well, and if you eat better, your body will be better equipped to bounce back or fight off illnesses faster. Whenever I feel like I am getting a cold, I try to eat nutrient-rich foods like vegetable soup, freshly squeezed juices, and leafy green vegetables like spinach. I can feel a difference and I can recover from colds and illnesses faster. When I eat these nutrient-rich foods I feel better as a whole, my body has the energy it needs to be successful as a nursing student both in the classroom and in the clinical setting. I feel my mind has a better attitude and I am more curious to learn new things. My weight does not fluctuate and my skin is more clear and I lower my chances of disease and sickness. Overall, for me eating healthy is a win-win for my body and mind and I think it is very important for overall health and well-being. Thank you for this opportunity.

My name is Dora Weihe, and I am thirty-one years old nursing student. I am currently a senior at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. Before going back to school to pursue my dream, I worked as a pediatric dental assistant for the last seven years. As I have enjoyed working with children, I do not believe dentistry is my calling and always wanted to finish my degree. With my healthcare experience as a DA, many would consider me an "untraditional student" because of my age and this being a second career path for me. Although it has taken me a little longer to figure out my dreams and goals for myself, I am confident in my current path in nursing. I feel a calling to this profession. During my free time, I enjoy taking walks in nature with my almost three-year-old dog, named Gordo. He is a child to me and is one of the reasons that motivate me to finish school so I can buy a house with a yard for him to play and roam free. I also enjoy working out, practicing yoga and mindfulness. I try to start my day with my daily affirmations to be grateful and start each day with a good mindset. I recently got engaged to my boyfriend of eight years who has been my rock during nursing school. With my amazing support system, I know I will be successful in this next year of nursing school. My goal after I graduate and join the healthcare field, as a nurse is to spread kindness and to make a genuine connection with the patients. Kindness is one of my core values that I have always considered to be important. I believe you never really know the struggles a person may be going through and one act of kindness, no matter how small, does make a difference. This scholarship would impact me greatly impact me and relieve great financial burdens during my school semester. I would use this scholarship to pay for my school's tuition and it would lead me to graduating next May. I was involved in a nurse externship this summer at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where I had the pleasure of getting hands-on clinical experience on a Neurology medical surgery floor. If I was selected it would truly mean the world to me and would greatly help me to pursue my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse. Thank you so much for considering me for this opportunity.

Mental health has really changed my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. In 2020, my father was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to start chemotherapy and radiation. It completely shook my world and my mental health declined significantly. I was in survival mode for my family and even moved closer to home to be available to help take care of them and take him to his appointments. After 6 months of treatment, my dad was in remission and the doctors said the cancer was gone. It took a few months to recover from all the stress that we went through over the six months when my dad was getting treatment. I started therapy and I started practicing healthy boundaries with friends and family. I learned so much about myself and how important it is to check in with yourself first. You can't pour from an empty cup so it's essential for you to take care of yourself and self-care is not selfish. I will continue to practice these things I have learned to help me and my mental health. I started nursing school in 2022 in hopes to become a pediatric nurse when I graduate and although nursing school is very stressful, I practice self-care every day to help relieve stress and stay on track to achieve my goal. This scholarship would help me greatly for my mental health!

Volunteering has had a positive impact on me and has changed my mindset because it helps me practice empathy and compassion for others around me. As well as, understanding a deeper connection to many social issues and the importance of giving back to those in need. Seeing women and children living in poverty without necessities like food, water, shelter, and healthcare is difficult to witness. Especially for me as a nursing student and seeing families in need of treatment that insurance does not cover or having to pay out of pocket for healthcare. I volunteered my time this summer for 4 weeks through an unpaid externship at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at the Scottish Rite Hospital and I was able to see firsthand the effects of volunteering and the positive impact it has had on me and how much volunteering is needed to help fill in the gaps in healthcare. At CHOA, they have volunteers come in with therapy dogs to visit the children and it not only lights up the patient's faces but also all the healthcare worker's faces too! Over the school year, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Books for Africa, an organization that takes donated books to Africa for children and those interested in learning. The Books for Africa warehouse has thousands of books and we helped organize and package the books so they could be sent to those in need. In this opportunity, I realized how special books can be for those who do not have access to them. I am grateful to have access to books and information within reach to learn and explore new possibilities. This scholarship is needed to help pay for my tuition for nursing school. I attend Mercer University in Atlanta, which is a private school and it is rather expensive. I am 31 years old, pursuing the goal of receiving my BSN in nursing. This will be my first degree and has been a goal of mine for the last 10 years. After I graduate I hope to become a pediatric nurse and work at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. If I were to receive this scholarship, it would relieve me of significant financial stress and burden to allow me to focus my attention on my studies. If I was selected it would truly mean the world to me. Thank you so much for considering me for this opportunity.

Nursing interests me because consider myself to be a caretaker and I enjoy helping others in need during hard times. I am motivated to spread kindness and to make genuine connections with my patients. When you take the time to get to know your patient, it creates trust and the patient is more likely to listen to you and create a more positive experience for the patient. Kindness is one of my core values that I have always considered to be important. I believe you never really know the struggles a person may be going through and one act of kindness, no matter how small, does make a difference. My parents raised me to follow the "golden rule", to treat others how you would like to be treated, and that has stuck with me as an adult. Treating patients with kindness and taking the time to make a genuine connection to build rapport are essential components of being a nurse. When I was a child, I was attacked by a dog and that was my first experience where I needed emergency hospital care. Although this was a traumatic time, I remember the nurses I had during my stay and I will never forget them. They were kind to me and took the time to understand my interests. I began to admire these women who were so kind to me during this difficult time. This experience when I was younger has helped shape me and inspired me to be a nurse to help others in need and give back to make the healthcare world a better place. Nursing is a second career for me, as I was a Dental Assistant for a pediatric dental office for seven years. Through this experience, I have learned I believe I belong in pediatrics. Over this past summer, I was a nurse extern at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where I worked on the Neurology medical surgery floor. I have really enjoyed this experience and feel like I have learned and grown so much. I believe I would be a great candidate to receive this scholarship because I am passionate about becoming a pediatric nurse after I graduate. I would be a great nurse because I am kind, patient, and determined to make a difference. I would be a great candidate to receive this scholarship because I am passionate about achieving my goals! Thank you for this opportunity!

Although I have healthcare experience as a DA, many would consider me an "untraditional student" because of my age. Although it has taken me a little longer to figure out my dreams and goals for myself, I am confident in my current path in nursing. I feel like I have a calling in this profession that is very hard to articulate and explain. I was twelve years old, I got attacked by a dog during a Girl Scout barbecue. They made me feel unique, secure, and welcomed. I believe I would be a great nurse because I am patient, enjoy helping others, and am determined to make a difference. I think I would be a great candidate to receive this scholarship because I am passionate about achieving my goals in school and becoming a nurse. Not only to further my education in this profession but to help others in need, just like how I was treated for my accident. I would be dedicated to caring for my patients and serving as their advocates. This scholarship would greatly benefit me in my studies while in school and would mean the world if I was selected because it would bring me one step closer to my dreams. By attending Mercer University, I will be one step closer to making my dreams a reality.
