My name is Donya Rezvani, and I am a former refugee born into a Bahá’í family in Iran. In 2013, at age 19, I fled Iran with my younger sister seeking safety and the freedom to pursue education. Instead, we spent over six years in Australia’s offshore refugee camp on Nauru, where opportunities to study or work were nonexistent, and basic human rights were denied. In 2020, I arrived in the United States determined to rebuild my life through education and service. Despite the challenges of starting over and coping with the effects of past trauma, I dedicated myself to pursuing my passion for dentistry. While working part-time, I completed 20 prerequisite credits with a 3.85 GPA and gained valuable hands-on experience through clinical training and shadowing at two dental offices. My long-term goal has always been to combine professional skill with meaningful service to improve individual and community health. I was accepted into West Virginia University’s Dental Hygiene program in 2024, but without financial aid, I was unable to attend. During this difficult time, I found purpose working full-time at the Northern Virginia Bahá’í Center, serving my community and regaining hope. In 2025, I was accepted into the more affordable Dental Hygiene program at Fortis College. This program not only allows me to earn a degree but also provides the opportunity to serve underserved populations, promote oral health awareness, and offer preventive care. Since the program requires full-time attendance, I am unable to work and face a significant financial gap. With your support, I can pursue this opportunity, achieve my dream of becoming a dental hygienist, and dedicate my life to helping others while contributing to a healthier, more equitable world.
