      Emerging Leaders in STEM Scholarship
I am interested in this field of study because it connects my passions, my goals, and my desire to make a difference. Growing up, I have always been involved in activities that required discipline, teamwork, and focus, such as basketball, band, and aviation. These experiences helped me realize that I enjoy challenges and learning skills that can be applied in real-life situations. Studying this field will allow me to combine my interests in problem-solving, leadership, and creativity while preparing for a future where I can contribute something meaningful to society. The impact I hope to make is to be a positive role model and create opportunities for others who may not always see themselves represented in this field. I want to show younger students, especially those from my community, that with hard work and determination, they can pursue careers in areas that may seem out of reach. Whether through mentoring, teaching, or leading by example, I hope to inspire others to believe in their potential and aim higher. Throughout my life, I have faced adversities that have shaped who I am today. Balancing academics with demanding extracurricular activities has not always been easy, and there were times when staying motivated was a challenge. I have also had to push past self-doubt and obstacles that come with being a young Black man striving for success. Instead of letting these challenges hold me back, I used them as motivation to work harder and stay focused on my goals. These experiences have strengthened my resilience and prepared me to face future challenges with confidence and determination. In addition, my involvement in basketball, band, and aviation has taught me how to handle pressure and setbacks. There were moments when I did not perform as well as I hoped, whether it was during a game, a performance, or an exam. Instead of giving up, I learned to reflect, improve, and keep pushing forward. These experiences showed me that failure is not the end, but a chance to grow stronger and wiser. Pursuing this field of study also represents breaking barriers and expanding what I believe is possible for my future. I understand that success will require continued effort, discipline, and sacrifice, but I am willing to put in the work. My goal is not only to achieve personal success, but to use my education to uplift others and give back to my community. By turning my challenges into motivation, I am confident that I can create a future that reflects resilience, purpose, and positive impact.
      Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Education has played a major role in shaping my goals and giving my life a clear sense of direction. As a Black young man growing up, school was more than just a place to learn facts—it was where I discovered who I am, what I am capable of, and what I want to contribute to the world. Through my academic experiences and involvement in band, basketball, and aviation, education has helped me overcome challenges, build confidence, and form a vision for a better future for myself and others. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is navigating pressure and expectations while trying to stay focused on my goals. Balancing academics with extracurricular activities has not always been easy. Being involved in marching band for all four years of high school required long hours of practice, discipline, and teamwork. At times, it was challenging to manage schoolwork while preparing for performances and competitions. However, band taught me perseverance and accountability. I learned that every role matters and that success comes from consistent effort, even when no one is watching. These lessons helped me stay motivated in the classroom and pushed me to take my education seriously. Basketball also played a major role in shaping my character. On the court, I learned how to handle setbacks, whether it was a tough loss or a personal performance that didn’t meet my expectations. Basketball taught me resilience, leadership, and how to stay composed under pressure. These skills transferred directly to my academics, especially during difficult classes or stressful moments. Instead of giving up, I learned to push through challenges and trust the process. Education taught me that failure is not the end—it is an opportunity to grow and improve. Aviation is where education truly gave me direction. Through learning about aviation, I realized that my interest in flight could become a meaningful career. Education exposed me to the science, responsibility, and precision involved in aviation, and it opened my eyes to opportunities I had never imagined before. Seeing how few Black pilots and aviation professionals there are motivated me even more. Education gave me the confidence to believe that I belong in spaces where people who look like me are often underrepresented. It showed me that knowledge can break barriers and create new paths. Through these experiences, I have learned that education is a powerful tool for change. It has helped me develop discipline, leadership, and a strong work ethic. More importantly, it has shown me that my success can inspire others. I hope to use my education to build a future where I can serve as a role model for younger students, especially those from communities like mine. Whether through aviation, education, or community involvement, I want to show others that their dreams are achievable with dedication and effort. In the future, I plan to use my education to create opportunities not only for myself but for others as well. I want to give back by encouraging young people to stay focused on their education, believe in their potential, and pursue careers they may not think are possible. Education has given me direction, purpose, and hope. By continuing to learn and grow, I aim to create a better future—one where success is shared, representation is increased, and the next generation is inspired to dream bigger than before. In addition to shaping my goals and career interests, education has helped me develop a deeper understanding of my responsibility to my community. Growing up, I saw how limited access to resources and guidance can affect the direction young people take. Education gave me exposure to mentors, teachers, and programs that encouraged me to think beyond my surroundings and believe in my potential. These influences helped me realize that success is not only about personal achievement, but also about lifting others along the way. Because of this, I now view my education as a tool to create long-term impact rather than short-term success. Another challenge I have overcome is self-doubt. At times, it was difficult to see myself in professional spaces where people who look like me are underrepresented, especially in aviation. However, through learning, studying, and gaining hands-on experience, I began to replace doubt with confidence. Education showed me that preparation is powerful. The more I learned, the more capable I felt. This growth in confidence has helped me speak up, take initiative, and believe that my goals are realistic and achievable. Education has also strengthened my sense of discipline and vision for the future. Managing schoolwork alongside band rehearsals, basketball practices, and aviation studies required strong time-management skills. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, but those moments taught me how to prioritize and stay focused on what matters most. These experiences prepared me for the responsibilities of college and a professional career. They also taught me that success often requires sacrifice, patience, and long-term commitment. Looking ahead, I hope to use my education to open doors for others who may not yet see a clear path for themselves. I want to be someone younger students can look up to and say, “If he can do it, so can I.” Whether through mentoring, speaking, or simply leading by example, I want to encourage students—especially Black youth—to pursue education with confidence and determination. Representation matters, and I want to be part of changing the narrative in fields like aviation where diversity is still lacking. Ultimately, education has given me purpose, direction, and the tools to build a meaningful future. It has taught me how to overcome challenges, stay disciplined, and dream beyond limitations. As I continue my journey, I am committed to using my education not only to improve my own life, but to create opportunities, inspire change, and contribute positively to the lives of others.

The silence of a gymnasium is never truly quiet. It is filled with the rhythmic thud of a ball, the squeak of rubber on hardwood, and the heavy breathing of athletes in motion. As a point guard and a member of my school’s band, I have learned to live within the nuances of sound. However, for most of my life, my own voice was a missing frequency. I live with Selective Mutism, an anxiety disorder that often renders me physically unable to speak in social or high-pressure environments. As a young Black man, this silence is often misinterpreted as being aloof or disinterested, but in reality, it was a prison I had to innovate my way out of. Selective Mutism affected me by turning the most basic human interactions into complex tactical maneuvers. In the classroom, I was the student who knew every answer but could never raise his hand. On the basketball court, I was the playmaker who saw the open lane but couldn't call for the pass. The frustration of having a "locked" voice led me to create my first solution: a system of non-verbal tactical cues. I developed a series of discreet hand signals and eye-contact patterns that allowed me to communicate plays to my teammates and adjustments to my drum major without needing to break my silence. This was my first lesson in engineering: when a standard system fails, you must build a new one. However, I realized that my personal workarounds were not enough for the millions of people who struggle with communication barriers. If I had the resources and funding, I would develop "Amplify," a wearable haptic ecosystem designed for non-verbal leaders. The centerpiece of this project would be a discreet wristband integrated with bio-sensors. This device would track the physiological spikes associated with the "freeze" response of Selective Mutism. When the user is unable to speak, they could use coded haptic taps—delivered through the band—that translate into instant text or audio cues on a coach’s watch or a teacher’s tablet. For a basketball player, this would mean "calling" a play through a vibration on a teammate's wrist. For a musician, it would mean signaling a technical issue to the conductor without stopping the rehearsal. This technology would solve the "Attention Tax"—the paralyzing fear that speaking will draw unwanted shock or scrutiny. It would allow individuals to lead through "digital presence," ensuring that their intellect and leadership are recognized even when their vocal cords are locked. Pursuing higher education is important to me because it is the laboratory where I can turn this vision into a reality. I want to study the intersection of [Insert Major, e.g., Computer Science or Psychology] and assistive technology. My journey has given me a perspective that many engineers lack: the lived experience of being "silenced" by my own biology. I want to use my education to prove that leadership is not defined by the volume of one’s voice, but by the clarity of one’s vision and the strength of one’s resilience. College represents a fresh start—a place where I am not "the quiet kid," but an innovator, an athlete, and a musician. I am ready to step into an environment where I can advocate for myself and others, using my education to bridge the gap between silence and connection. My experience with Selective Mutism didn’t just take my voice; it gave me the drive to ensure that, in the future, no one else has to fight to be heard.
      Selective Mutism Step Forward Scholarship
In the high school gymnasium, my world is defined by sound: the rhythmic squeak of sneakers on hardwood, the thunderous bounce of the ball, and the roar of the crowd. As a point guard, I see the whole floor. I know exactly where my teammates are going before they do. But for years, there was one sound missing from that symphony—my own voice. Living with Selective Mutism as a young Black man has meant navigating a world that often expects me to be loud, aggressive, or outspoken, while my anxiety kept me locked in a physical silence. Selective Mutism is not a choice; it is a "freeze" response that settles in my throat the moment I step onto campus. In the classroom, this silence was often misinterpreted. In a society where Black men are sometimes unfairly stereotyped, my quietness was occasionally misread as being aloof or "difficult," when in reality, I was simply fighting a battle to say "present" during roll call. This condition forced me to find alternative ways to connect. I found my first release in the band room. Behind my instrument, the "lock" on my voice didn't matter. Whether I was hitting a pocket on the drums or finding the melody, the music spoke for me. Band taught me that communication isn’t just about vocal cords; it’s about timing, harmony, and contributing to a collective goal. Basketball provided the second half of my survival kit. On the court, the pressure to use "small talk" disappears, replaced by the necessity of "game talk." While I struggled to chat in the hallways, I learned to use my body, my eyes, and short, tactical bursts of speech to lead my team. Sports gave me a structured environment where being "the quiet leader" was an asset. I learned to lead by example—through work ethic, late-night practices, and a level of focus that my silence allowed me to cultivate. My teammates didn’t need me to be the loudest person in the room; they needed me to be the most reliable. Pursuing higher education is vital to me because I am ready to transition from a quiet observer to an active advocate. For a long time, I felt like I was living behind a glass wall—seeing everything but unable to touch it. College represents the opportunity to break that glass. I want to prove that Selective Mutism does not limit my intellect or my potential as a leader. I am eager to enter an environment where I can access the tools to further manage my anxiety while honing my skills in [Insert Potential Major]. Furthermore, I want to represent a demographic that is rarely discussed in the context of anxiety disorders. By succeeding in higher education, I hope to show other young Black men that struggling with mental health or communication barriers doesn’t make you weak—it makes you resilient. My journey through the silence of high school, the discipline of the band, and the grit of the basketball court has prepared me for the rigors of university. I am not just a student who doesn’t talk; I am a scholar, an athlete, and a musician who has learned that the strongest voices are often the ones that had to fight the hardest to be heard.

As a Black young man growing up today, I have learned early on the importance of perseverance, representation, and using my voice to create positive change. My experiences in basketball, band, and aviation have shaped not only who I am, but also the educator I hope to become. Each of these areas has taught me discipline, teamwork, leadership, and the power of mentorship—values I plan to carry into my future career in education. Basketball taught me how to work toward a goal even when the odds are not in my favor. On the court, success does not come from individual talent alone; it comes from communication, trust, and accountability. I learned how to lead by example, encourage teammates, and stay focused under pressure. As an educator, I want to bring that same mindset into the classroom. I plan to create an environment where students feel supported, challenged, and motivated to believe in themselves, just as a good coach believes in their players. Band has played an equally important role in shaping my character. Playing an instrument requires patience, consistency, and the willingness to improve through practice. Being part of a band also taught me how to collaborate and listen to others, because harmony cannot exist without respect and cooperation. As a future educator, I want to show students that learning is a process and that mistakes are not failures, but opportunities to grow. I especially want to encourage students who may feel overlooked or underestimated to recognize their own potential. Aviation sparked my curiosity and showed me how education can open doors to fields many students, especially students of color, may not see themselves represented in. Learning about aviation challenged me academically and taught me the importance of precision, responsibility, and critical thinking. It also made me realize how powerful exposure can be. As an educator, I hope to introduce students to career paths they may have never considered and help them see that they belong in any space they aspire to be in. My goal as an educator is not only to teach academic content, but to serve as a role model and mentor, particularly for young Black students who may not always see themselves reflected in positions of leadership. I want to be someone students can look up to—someone who understands their struggles and believes in their success. By creating inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning environments, I hope to empower students to dream bigger and work harder toward their goals. Through education, I plan to make a positive impact by inspiring confidence, promoting equity, and helping shape the next generation of leaders. I believe that when students are given guidance, encouragement, and opportunity, they can change their own lives—and eventually, the world.

Throughout my high school years, I have been actively involved in my school and community through activities that emphasize leadership, teamwork, and responsibility. As a senior, I have participated in marching band, basketball, and aviation-related programs, all of which have shaped who I am and how I contribute to the people around me. These experiences have allowed me to grow as a leader while also giving back to my community in meaningful ways. Marching band has been one of the most impactful parts of my high school experience. As a four-year percussionist, I learned discipline, time management, and accountability. Band also gave me the opportunity to mentor younger students by helping them learn music, manage performance pressure, and feel confident as part of a team. By offering encouragement and guidance, I helped create an inclusive environment where students felt supported rather than intimidated. Our band’s performances at school events and community gatherings strengthened school spirit and brought people together, making band a positive presence in the community. Basketball further shaped my character by teaching me resilience and leadership under pressure. Being part of a team required trust, communication, and mutual respect. I made it a priority to encourage teammates, promote sportsmanship, and maintain a positive attitude during both wins and losses. These actions helped create a supportive team culture and reinforced the importance of standing up for others, especially during moments of stress or conflict. My interest in aviation has given me a strong appreciation for safety, responsibility, and precision. Aviation programs emphasize following procedures, making ethical decisions, and understanding how actions can affect others. These lessons extend beyond the cockpit and into everyday life, especially when it comes to protecting and supporting younger students. Through my leadership roles, I strive to set a positive example and promote respectful behavior both in person and online. Keeping children and youth safe from in-person bullying and cyberbullying is an issue I take seriously. Within my school, I have helped create a safer environment by promoting inclusivity, discouraging harmful language, and standing up for peers when I see someone being targeted. I believe that silence allows bullying to continue, so I make an effort to speak up and support those who may feel powerless. Online, I practice responsible digital behavior by thinking carefully about what I post, refusing to participate in harmful conversations, and encouraging others to do the same. I also stress the importance of reporting cyberbullying and using technology in ways that uplift rather than harm. As I prepare to enter higher education, I face significant financial challenges. While my family is supportive, the cost of tuition, housing, books, and flight training or technical coursework places a heavy financial burden on us. Financial assistance would allow me to focus on my education without the constant stress of balancing excessive work hours alongside demanding coursework. Receiving support would make it possible for me to fully invest in my studies and extracurricular involvement while continuing to give back to my community. Higher education represents more than personal advancement to me—it is an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills needed to serve others. Through my degree, I plan to continue promoting safety, leadership, and mentorship, especially for younger students who may need guidance. With the help of financial support, I will be able to pursue my goals while remaining committed to making a positive impact in my community.

A movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is Top Gun: Maverick because it reinforced my values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance while also strengthening my passion for aviation. More than just an action film, it highlights the importance of responsibility, leadership, and pushing beyond perceived limits—lessons that strongly connect to my own experiences in band, athletics, and aviation. One of the most powerful aspects of the movie is its focus on preparation and accountability. The pilots in Top Gun: Maverick are not defined solely by talent, but by the hours of training, repetition, and sacrifice required to succeed. Watching this reminded me of my time in marching band, where success comes from countless rehearsals and attention to detail, and in basketball, where teamwork and trust are essential under pressure. The film made it clear that excellence is earned through consistency and commitment, not shortcuts. The movie also emphasizes leadership through action rather than words. Maverick earns respect by flying alongside his team and holding himself to the same standards he expects of others. This resonated with me as a senior who understands that leadership means supporting teammates, setting an example, and staying calm during challenging moments. Whether helping younger band members or encouraging teammates on the court, I have learned that effective leadership builds confidence and unity. Another reason the film impacted me is its portrayal of resilience. Maverick faces setbacks, doubt, and criticism, yet he continues to adapt and improve. This message taught me that failure is not a stopping point, but an opportunity to grow. In both academics and extracurriculars, I have faced challenges that tested my confidence, and the film reinforced the idea that persistence and a strong mindset are essential to long-term success. Finally, Top Gun: Maverick strengthened my interest in aviation by showing how skill, precision, and decision-making can have real consequences. The film highlights aviation not as thrill-seeking, but as a profession built on responsibility and trust. It inspired me to pursue a career where technical knowledge and leadership can serve a greater purpose. Overall, Top Gun: Maverick impacted my life by reminding me that growth comes from discipline, teamwork, and resilience—values that continue to guide my goals and motivate me to pursue excellence in everything I do. No matter if it’s in side or outside of school grounds i’ll always persevere and accomplish anything i put my mind to.

In addition to my professional goals, I hope to give back by mentoring younger students and encouraging them to pursue their interests, especially in fields like aviation and technology that can feel intimidating. I understand how important encouragement and guidance can be, and I want to provide that same support to others. By continuing to lead with discipline, integrity, and a commitment to service, I plan to use my education and experiences to create lasting positive change. The lessons I have learned in my community will guide me as I work to make an impact far beyond it.

Being a part of the marching band for all four years of high school has had a strong influence on my character and personal growth. As a senior who played the drums, band taught me discipline, commitment, and responsibility. Marching band required long hours of practice, early mornings, and constant repetition, which pushed me to stay focused even when I was tired. Learning my music, perfecting my technique, and staying in step with the rest of the band showed me that success depends on consistency and effort. I learned that every role matters, and if one person is not prepared, it can affect the entire group. This taught me accountability and the importance of always giving my best. Band also helped me develop strong time management skills, especially since I balanced band with academics and basketball. Managing rehearsals, games, schoolwork, and performances was not easy, but it taught me how to prioritize my responsibilities and stay organized. There were times when I felt overwhelmed, but band pushed me to stay committed and mentally strong. Playing the drums required focus, precision, and rhythm, which helped improve my concentration and patience. These skills carried over into basketball, where timing, teamwork, and communication are just as important. Being involved in both activities showed me how discipline and teamwork apply to different areas of life. In addition, band helped build my confidence and leadership skills. Performing in front of large crowds taught me how to stay calm under pressure and trust my preparation. Over the years, I learned how to accept constructive criticism and use it to improve instead of getting discouraged. As a senior, I understood the importance of setting a positive example for younger band members by staying focused, respectful, and dedicated. Band taught me that leadership is not just about giving directions, but about showing commitment through actions and encouraging others to do their best. Looking ahead, I anticipate that future band involvement will continue to shape my goals and mindset. Whether I continue playing in a college band or simply apply the lessons I learned, band has prepared me for future challenges. The discipline, teamwork, and perseverance I gained will help me succeed academically, athletically, and professionally. Band taught me how to work toward long-term goals, stay committed through difficulties, and perform under pressure. These experiences have shaped who I am today and will continue to guide my decisions and goals in the future, helping me grow as a student, athlete, and leader.

I am a motivated, hardworking, and goal-driven individual who believes that success comes from discipline, perseverance, and a strong sense of purpose. Throughout my academic journey, I have learned that challenges are not obstacles meant to stop me, but opportunities meant to strengthen me. I take pride in pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and holding myself accountable for my actions and responsibilities. These experiences have shaped my character and taught me the importance of staying focused on long-term goals, even when the journey becomes difficult. I strive to grow academically, personally, and mentally, knowing that self-improvement is a lifelong process. I am deeply committed to pursuing higher education because I recognize its power to create opportunity and provide stability for the future. Earning a college degree represents more than academic achievement; it symbolizes dedication, growth, and preparation for real-world challenges. Higher education will allow me to expand my knowledge, sharpen my critical thinking skills, and develop the confidence needed to succeed in a competitive society. I understand that college requires commitment, sacrifice, and resilience, but I am prepared to meet those expectations because I believe education is an investment in myself. By continuing my education, I am taking an important step toward building a future rooted in purpose and success. My academic and career goals are centered on earning a degree that will lead to a stable and fulfilling profession. I hope to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to become a leader who acts with integrity, responsibility, and compassion. I want my education to prepare me to make informed decisions, solve complex problems, and work effectively with others from diverse backgrounds. Beyond personal success, I am motivated by the desire to positively impact those around me. I believe that true success is measured not only by individual achievements but by the ability to uplift and inspire others. In the future, I hope to use my degree to create opportunities for myself, support my family, and give back to my community. I want to be an example of perseverance and determination, showing that hard work and education can open doors to endless possibilities. Higher education will equip me with the tools needed to grow professionally and personally while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to society. By committing myself to my education, I am choosing a path that leads to growth, leadership, and service. I am confident that my dedication to learning will guide me toward a future defined by achievement, purpose, and lasting impact.
      Mrs. Doris Glover Scholarship
One teacher who profoundly influenced my life was my 11th grade English teacher, Ms. Carter. Her classroom was more than a place to complete assignments; it was a space where I learned how to think critically, express myself clearly, and believe in my abilities. She held every student to high standards and constantly reminded us that our potential only mattered if we were willing to work for it. When I struggled with confidence in my writing, she never accepted excuses or “good enough” work. Instead, she challenged me to revise, reflect, and push beyond my comfort zone. During a difficult period in my junior year, when personal challenges affected my motivation, Ms. Carter remained firm yet supportive. She taught me that setbacks are not signs of failure, but opportunities to grow stronger. Through her guidance, I learned resilience, discipline, and accountability, lessons that shaped how I approach challenges both inside and outside the classroom. The lessons Ms. Carter taught me will continue to guide me as I begin my journey at Prairie View A&M University. Because of her influence, I understand that success is built on consistency, effort, and the willingness to learn from mistakes. At PVAMU, I plan to apply these lessons by approaching my coursework with focus and determination, even when classes become demanding. I am prepared to manage my time responsibly, seek help when needed, and remain committed to my goals. Ms. Carter also emphasized the importance of using education as a tool for leadership and service, not just personal achievement. This perspective has shaped my desire to become actively involved on campus and within the surrounding community. I hope to participate in student organizations, leadership programs, and service initiatives that reflect PVAMU’s mission of excellence and impact. When I face challenges or moments of self-doubt, I will remember the resilience she helped me build and the confidence she instilled in me. Her lessons remind me that growth often comes from discomfort and that perseverance leads to progress. As I move forward at Prairie View A&M University, I carry her influence with me as a foundation for academic success, personal growth, and meaningful contribution. The values she taught me will continue to shape my character and guide my decisions, helping me become a student and leader who strives to uplift others while pursuing my own aspirations. These principles will encourage me to stay focused, remain humble, and continuously challenge myself to grow intellectually, emotionally, and ethically, ensuring that my time at PVAMU is purposeful, transformative, and aligned with my long-term goals for success and service to my family, community, and future career aspirations.
