Throughout my life, football has not only shaped my identity but also influenced my understanding of resilience, teamwork, and recovery. As a varsity quarterback at Howard High School of Technology, I had the privilege of leading my team to two state championships. The discipline, leadership, and dedication required to compete at that level taught me invaluable life lessons. Still, it was the challenges I faced off the field that truly set me on the path toward a career in physical therapy. During my junior year of high school, I suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery. It was my first real encounter with physical therapy, and it opened my eyes to a whole new world. I had always seen athletic training and medical care as something in the background—important but separate from the athlete’s journey. Suddenly, I found myself depending on it. My physical therapist became more than a clinician; they became motivators, mentors, and partners in my recovery. With their help, I returned to the field stronger and more determined than ever. In my senior year, I deepened my exposure to the medical side of sports by completing a co-op with Delaware Orthopedic Specialists under the direction of Dr. Mesa, one of our team doctors and the surgeon who performed both of my shoulder procedures. That experience gave me a firsthand look at the professionalism, technical skill, and compassion required in the field of orthopedics and rehabilitation. I observed how effective treatment plans were designed, how patients were guided through recovery, and most importantly, how lives were improved through mobility and strength. After high school, I continued my football career at North Carolina Central University. Competing at the collegiate level pushed me further, both physically and mentally. However, following my junior year in May 2024, I had to undergo a second shoulder surgery. That surgery marked a major turning point. While it signaled the end of my time as a competitive athlete, it also reaffirmed my passion for physical therapy. I have now been through the recovery process twice, and I truly understand the highs and lows of rehabilitation. Choosing to step away from football was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made, but it brought clarity. I realized that my journey wasn’t ending, it was just evolving. I wanted to be the one helping others navigate the road to recovery, just as my therapists and medical team had done for me. My background as an athlete gives me a unique perspective and deep empathy for the patients I hope to treat. I know the mindset of someone trying to get back in the game, and I understand the emotional toll that injuries can take. Pursuing a career in physical therapy is more than a professional goal—it’s personal. It’s rooted in my lived experiences, shaped by incredible mentors, and driven by a deep desire to give back. I want to be the person who helps others move again, heal again, and believe again. That’s the impact I hope to make in this field, and that’s why I’m committed to becoming a physical therapist.
