Bio

Hi! My name is Dona. I am a multicultural doctoral student and online dual enrollment student with big dreams of having a big impact as a mental health care provider. I love to read and write and be in nature. I am academically driven, dedicated to serving my community, and determined to glorify God through all I do. Growing up as a foreigner (a refugee from Bosnia to the United States), I’ve struggled through the pain of long-distance friendships, confusion about where “home” is, and ethnic discrimination. These experiences (among others) led me to suffer from chronic anxiety, peaking during my early teenage years. During this dark period of my life, I discovered that mental health resources tailored to the specific needs of the multicultural life are practically non-existent. I intend to change that. I am now proud to say that I am a resilient and adaptable, fluently bilingual, multicultural woman ready to work and fight for my dreams, but the journey hasn’t been easy. I hope to smooth the path for the next generation of third-culture kids by providing the tools they need to thrive. The doctorate level of study will give me the chance to engage in research and raise awareness within the field of the needs of multicultural individuals. It’s a big undertaking, but that will not stop me.

Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My ultimate goal is to become a leading expert in maternal mental health, with a focus on postpartum depression and trauma, and to make meaningful contributions to both research and practice. Maternal mental health is a critical yet often underrepresented area in psychology, and my aim is to bridge the gaps in understanding, treatment, and advocacy for mothers. This goal stems from my personal experiences with postpartum depression, my professional work as a trauma therapist, and my deep belief in the need for holistic, evidence-based approaches to maternal care. Achieving this goal will require a multifaceted plan that incorporates advanced education, rigorous research, community collaboration, and systemic advocacy. The first step in my plan is to complete my PhD in psychology over the next three years. This degree will provide the academic foundation and research opportunities necessary to achieve my long-term vision. I have already identified key areas of focus for my dissertation, including the impact of trauma on maternal mental health and how this intersects with epigenetic changes. To support this work, I will need access to academic resources, mentorship from experienced faculty, and funding for research expenses. My annual budget for this phase includes $20,000 for tuition after scholarships, $5,000 for research costs such as participant incentives and software tools like SPSS, and $3,000 for attending national and international conferences. These conferences will allow me to present my findings, receive feedback from peers, and build connections with other researchers and practitioners in the field. A critical aspect of my plan involves publishing research that advances the understanding of maternal mental health and trauma. During my PhD program, I aim to publish at least three peer-reviewed articles, focusing on the effects of trauma on genetic expression, the interplay of nature and nurture in maternal mental health, and effective interventions for postpartum depression. These publications will not only contribute to the academic community but also help establish my credibility as an expert in the field. To achieve this, I plan to dedicate time to rigorous study design, data collection, and analysis, with guidance from my advisors and colleagues. After completing my PhD, I intend to pursue postdoctoral research opportunities that will allow me to deepen my expertise and expand my impact. I plan to collaborate with universities, medical institutions, and non-profit organizations to develop evidence-based interventions for maternal mental health challenges. These partnerships will enable me to translate research findings into practical solutions, such as therapeutic models, community support programs, and training resources for healthcare providers. Additionally, I aim to secure grant funding from organizations like the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to support large-scale studies and pilot programs. In parallel, I will advocate for systemic changes in maternal mental health care, including increased access to resources and greater awareness of postpartum challenges. This will involve working with policymakers, community leaders, and mental health organizations to push for expanded services and funding. I plan to use my personal story and professional expertise to raise awareness and inspire change, emphasizing the importance of supporting mothers as a cornerstone of family and community health. Ultimately, my goal is to create a lasting legacy in the field of maternal mental health. By combining education, research, and advocacy, I hope to contribute to a world where mothers receive the care, support, and understanding they need to thrive. Through careful planning, strategic resource allocation, and unwavering dedication, I am confident in my ability to achieve this vision and make a meaningful impact on the lives of countless families.
    Edwards-Maxwell Scholarship
As a refugee from Bosnia, my journey has been defined by resilience, perseverance, and an unyielding determination to turn adversity into opportunity. My family and I fled to the United States in search of safety and a better future after enduring the hardships of war and displacement. This experience of leaving behind our home and starting over in a new country profoundly shaped my identity and mental health. It also ignited a deep empathy for others who have faced trauma and uncertainty, sparking my desire to help people navigate their own challenges. Growing up in a new culture as a first-generation immigrant came with many obstacles. I watched my father, Darko, a hardworking man who sacrificed so much to provide for our family, model integrity, determination, and compassion. His dedication to creating a stable future for us became my inspiration. Determined to honor my family’s sacrifices, I committed myself to education, knowing it would be the key to building a better life not just for myself but for others as well. Being the first in my family to attend college was both a privilege and a challenge. Without a roadmap or family members who had navigated higher education, I learned to rely on my own resilience and seek out mentors who could guide me. I earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, and now, as a PhD candidate in psychology, I am breaking barriers within my family and community. My lived experiences have profoundly influenced my professional focus on maternal mental health and trauma. As a mother of three, I personally struggled with postpartum depression after each pregnancy. These challenges were not just transformative but also clarifying—they solidified my mission to support other women through the complexities of maternal mental health. Today, as a trauma therapist, I work to help women heal from trauma, including postpartum depression and abortion-related experiences, while empowering them to reclaim their lives with dignity and strength. In my academic work, I am particularly drawn to the intersection of trauma, resilience, and the science of human development. My research delves into how trauma impacts genetic expression, exploring the blurred lines between nature and nurture. I hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of how environmental factors and individual resilience shape mental health outcomes, particularly for mothers and their families. Beyond my clinical and academic work, I see myself as a mentor, advocate, and teacher. I aim to inspire future generations, especially my six-year-old daughter, by demonstrating that overcoming obstacles can lead to transformative change. By integrating psychological science with compassion and advocacy, I seek to create a ripple effect—helping individuals heal while addressing systemic challenges in mental health care. Through my studies and work in the United States, I am committed to making a meaningful impact on the world by advancing mental health care, empowering individuals to embrace their potential, and building a legacy of hope and resilience.
CREATIVE. INSPIRED. HAPPY Mid-Career Writing Scholarship
I have always found writing to be a significant outlet for me, allowing me to articulate my thoughts, navigate my emotions, and convey intricate ideas. What I cherish most about writing is the liberty it offers to delve into various viewpoints and capture the depth of human experiences. Whether I’m engaged in professional or personal writing, I find it helps me structure my thoughts in a way that brings clarity to both myself and others. The process of transforming ideas into words compels me to explore my beliefs and insights more deeply, making writing not just a means of communication but also a pathway for self-exploration and contemplation. One of the most rewarding elements of writing is its power to forge connections with others. In my role as a mental health counselor, I’ve discovered that the written word serves as a profound medium for empathy and understanding. Writing allows me to share narratives, experiences, and insights that resonate with individuals on a personal level. It becomes especially impactful when I can articulate the challenges faced by those who struggle to find the words for their own experiences. Through writing, I can give voice to important topics like mental health, trauma, and emotional healing, which are often hard to discuss openly. This ability to bridge the gap between personal struggles and shared experiences fosters a sense of community and belonging, reminding us that we are not alone in our journeys. Beyond its personal and professional importance, I enjoy writing because it presents endless opportunities for growth. There’s always something new to discover—whether it’s honing my style, trying out different formats, or venturing into various genres. Writing is a craft that develops over time, and the journey of evolving as a writer is immensely fulfilling. Each new challenge offers a chance for creativity and intellectual advancement. I find joy in experimenting with different voices and perspectives, pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone, and embracing the unpredictability of the creative process. This exploration not only enriches my writing but also enhances my understanding of the world around me. As someone who values continuous learning, my aspiration to further my education naturally aligns with my passion for writing and personal development. I believe that education lays the groundwork for broadening my understanding of the world and for honing the skills needed to make meaningful contributions. While pursuing advanced studies, I aim to deepen my knowledge in areas that intersect with my writing, such as psychology, literature, and social issues. This academic journey will not only enhance my writing but also empower me to engage with complex topics more thoughtfully and effectively. Moreover, I see education as a collaborative endeavor, where sharing ideas and engaging in
    Pro-Life Advocates Scholarship
As a mental health counselor specializing in maternal mental health trauma in Texas, my pro-life stance stems from both my personal beliefs and professional experiences. I work closely with women who face significant emotional and psychological challenges, many of whom have experienced the trauma of abortion. These encounters have profoundly shaped my views on life and the value of human dignity. Growing up in Texas and grounded in Christian faith, I believe that life begins at conception. This belief is central to my worldview and is deeply rooted in my understanding of God as the creator of all life. I view each life, no matter how small, as precious and deserving of protection. My pro-life stance is driven by a desire to protect the most vulnerable, including the unborn. My professional experiences have only reinforced this conviction. In my work, I have witnessed the emotional and psychological toll that abortion can take on women. Many of my clients experience profound feelings of guilt, shame, and regret after undergoing the procedure, and these emotions can manifest as depression, anxiety, or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For these women, abortion is not just a medical procedure but a deeply emotional experience with lasting impacts on their mental health. While abortion is often presented as an empowering choice, I’ve seen that many women feel pressured into it by circumstances or external factors, such as financial struggles, lack of support, or family influence. This pressure only deepens the emotional wounds they carry afterward. I believe that true empowerment lies in providing women with the resources and support they need to carry their pregnancies to term and helping them make informed, life-affirming decisions. As a counselor, I understand that pregnancy, particularly in difficult situations, can bring immense challenges. I work hard to create a nonjudgmental space where women can openly discuss their fears and options. However, I also believe that society must do more to support pregnant women. This includes improving access to maternal healthcare, offering financial and emotional support, and connecting women with resources such as adoption services or crisis pregnancy centers. For those who have experienced abortion, counseling is essential for healing. I help my clients process their emotions and find a path forward. In my practice, I use compassionate, evidence-based therapeutic techniques to support their emotional well-being. My goal is not only to help them heal from the trauma but also to assist them in rebuilding their lives. Being pro-life means advocating for the well-being of both mother and child. In Texas, the pro-life movement is strong, but I believe we need to continue focusing on comprehensive support for women before, during, and after pregnancy. By providing real alternatives and emotional care, we can create a culture that values both the unborn and the women facing difficult decisions. Ultimately, my pro-life stance is shaped by my belief in the sanctity of life and my commitment to helping women navigate the complex emotional landscape of maternal mental health. Through my work, I strive to empower women to choose life for themselves and their children.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
It is a challenge to select just three Billie Eilish songs because her music captures a wide range of emotions and experiences. Nonetheless, here are my top three choices: 1. "Happier Than Ever": This song encapsulates the complexities of relationships and the path of self-discovery. The transition from the soft, reflective first half to the powerful second half reflects the emotional highs and lows we all experience. The lyrics convey feelings of frustration and liberation, which resonate with me, particularly during times when I’ve felt overwhelmed by expectations or the desire to escape unhealthy situations. Eilish's raw honesty in this track is a reminder of the importance of prioritizing my own well-being. 2. "When the Party's Over": This hauntingly beautiful ballad explores themes of heartbreak and emotional vulnerability. The sparse production allows Eilish's vocals to take center stage, expressing a major sense of sadness. The lyrics articulate the feeling of loneliness or disconnection, which can be especially relatable during challenging moments. This song resonates with me because it emphasizes the significance of recognizing and processing our emotions, a essential aspect of mental health that I promote in my work as a counselor. 3. "Bellyache": This song addresses guilt and the repercussions of our actions, all while being set to an engaging pop melody. The contrast between the upbeat instrumentals and darker themes creates an compelling listening experience. I appreciate how Eilish tackles the complexity of emotions that arise from making mistakes and feeling regret. This song resonates with me as it emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our feelings and learning from our experiences—something I stress to my clients as they navigate their own paths. In summary, Billie Eilish’s music deeply resonates with me due to her ability to illustrate the details of human emotions and experiences. Her lyrics frequently reflect themes of mental health, self-discovery, and vulnerability, which align closely with my own values and professional goals.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
I admire LeBron James for several reasons that extend beyond his exceptional skill on the basketball court. First and foremost, his versatility as a player is astonishing. LeBron is not only an excellent scorer but also a superb passer and defender. His capacity to adapt his game to various roles and team dynamics is one of the traits that distinguishes him. Whether he is playing as a forward, a point guard, or even a center, he can influence the game in numerous ways, making him a valuable asset to any team.In addition to his skills, LeBron's work ethic and commitment to his develop are genuinely motivating. He consistently invests the effort necessary to improve and sustain top performance, which is evident in his longevity in the league. He has beaten the odds by remaining at the peak of his game well into his 30s, demonstrating not only physical ability but also mental discipline. His dedication to fitness and training is an excellent example for aspiring athletes.Besides, LeBron’s impact off the court is substantial. He uses his platform to advocate for social change and has been outspoken on issues such as racial equality, education, and mental health. His philanthropic initiatives, especially through the LeBron James Family Foundation and the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, emphasize his commitment to giving back to the community. This aspect of his character resonates with me, as it reflects a desire to create a positive impact beyond basketball. As for my opinion on whether LeBron is the greatest basketball player of all time (GOAT), it is a subjective topic that often hinges on personal preference. Many fans support Michael Jordan, pointing to his six championships and overall impact on the game. However, I contend that LeBron’s ability to excel in various facets of the game, his versatility, and his enduring excellence over a longer career make a strong argument for him as the GOAT.LeBron's influence on the game goes beyond mere statistics; it involves his capacity to uplift his teammates and his grasp of basketball strategy. His basketball IQ is extraordinary, enabling him to make swift decisions that often result in winning plays. What's more, his performance during critical playoff moments and Finals appearances has demonstrated his ability to thrive under pressure, reinforcing his legacy. Finally, the debate about who is the greatest will always be subjective, with valid arguments on both sides. Whether it’s LeBron, Jordan, or other legends like Kobe Bryant or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, each player has made a lasting impact on the sport. For me, LeBron James stands out not only for his achievements but also for his overall influence and contributions to basketball and society.
    First-Gen Futures Scholarship
I have decided to pursue higher education for several important reasons, all of which are closely tied to my experiences and goals. One major motivation is my aspiration to make a important impact in the mental health field, particularly for those who have encountered serious challenges such as trauma, marginalization, and cultural displacement. My experience as a refugee from Bosnia has encouraged a deep appreciation for the value of mental health support, and I am eager to gain the knowledge and skills needed to provide that support effectively. Alongside my dedication to assisting others, I am enthusiastic about lifelong learning. I hold the belief that education is a powerful instrument for personal development and comprehension. Pursuing a PhD will allow me to enhance my expertise in psychology and counseling, which will enable me to investigate advanced concepts and innovative methods in mental health care. I aspire to contribute to the field by creating comprehensive resources and strategies that cater to the unique needs of diverse populations, including neurodiverse individuals and refugees. As a first-generation college student, I have faced distinct challenges while preparing for college. The college application process was especially intimidating without guidance from family members. To address this, I proactively sought out resources and support systems. I engaged with educational organizations and programs personalized for first-generation students, which offered invaluable insights into the college experience. I participated in workshops covering various topics, from college selection and application techniques to financial aid and scholarship opportunities.I also sought mentorship from educators and counselors who were familiar with the challenges that first-generation students often encounter. Their encouragement and guidance have been critical in helping me set realistic goals and develop a plan to reach them. Also, I spent time researching colleges, looking into their programs, and understanding the resources that support students like me.In preparation for the academic challenges of college, I concentrated on developing solid study habits and effective time management skills. I enrolled in preparatory courses that bolstered my foundational knowledge in psychology and counseling. Juggling my responsibilities as a mother while pursuing my education further inspired me to implement effective strategies for managing my time and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I realized that prioritizing tasks and staying organized were essential for achieving academic success while being available for my daughter. What's more, I have made efforts to cultivate a supportive community around me. Connecting with other students, particularly those who share similar backgrounds and experiences, has given me a feeling of connection and support. We exchange resources, share tips, and motivate each other to overcome challenges. In summary, my choice to pursue higher education is fueled by a desire to enable both myself and others. I am convinced that earning a higher degree will enhance my professional abilities and enable me to advocate for individuals who may lack access to education and mental health resources. As I progress on this journey, I remain dedicated to inspiring my daughter and others in my community, demonstrating that education is a pathway to resilience, understanding, and important change.
    Fishers of Men-tal Health Scholarship
My experiences with mental health have profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career goals, influencing my identity on both personal and professional levels. Having navigated the challenges of ADHD, postpartum depression, and the trauma of being a refugee, I’ve developed a deep understanding of how mental health struggles intersect with larger issues like trauma, identity, and community. These personal experiences have driven me to offer meaningful mental health support as a counselor, particularly to those who may feel isolated, marginalized, or misunderstood. As a refugee from Bosnia, I experienced firsthand the emotional and psychological toll of displacement, trauma, and loss. Starting over in a new country with unfamiliar surroundings, while carrying the weight of leaving everything behind, brought constant anxiety and a profound sense of uncertainty. The pressure to adapt while grappling with the trauma of being uprooted from home had a lasting impact on my mental health. This experience taught me that mental health goes beyond individual struggles; it is deeply affected by societal and environmental forces. This holistic understanding has shaped my approach as a counselor. I believe that every individual’s mental health journey is unique, and this belief informs my advocacy for mental health care that is compassionate, accessible, and personalized. I am particularly committed to supporting vulnerable populations such as refugees, trauma survivors, and individuals who are neurodiverse. These communities are often underserved, and I am driven by the desire to provide resources that meet their specific needs. As I pursue my PhD, my goal is to continue expanding my knowledge so I can develop more comprehensive tools that better serve these groups. Beyond my professional aspirations, my personal relationships have also been shaped by my mental health journey. I have learned the value of emotional openness, empathy, and active listening, all of which I work to foster in my connections—whether with family, friends, or clients. My own struggles have made me more attuned to the emotional needs of others, and I strive to be a supportive and non-judgmental listener. This has allowed me to cultivate deeper, more meaningful relationships centered on mutual understanding and support. One of the most important aspects of my life is my role as a mother, and my experiences with mental health have deeply influenced how I parent. I am mindful of how my well-being impacts my relationship with my daughter, and I strive to model resilience, emotional openness, and self-care for her. I want her to know that it is okay to struggle and that seeking help is a sign of strength. Balancing motherhood with my studies and career has been challenging, but it has reinforced my belief in the importance of self-compassion and prioritizing mental health. I want to inspire my daughter not just through words but through my actions, showing her that it is possible to pursue passions, overcome adversity, and find strength in vulnerability. In fact, one of my biggest motivations in continuing my education and building my career is to set an example for my daughter. I want her to see that dedication, hard work, and compassion can lead to meaningful contributions in the world. I aspire for her to grow up understanding that it’s okay to face challenges, that it’s normal to seek support, and that caring for her mental health is just as important as any academic or professional goal. By showing her how I navigate my own journey, I hope to instill in her the courage to pursue her own dreams, regardless of the obstacles she may encounter. Moreover, I want to create an environment where my daughter feels safe discussing her emotions and mental health. I strive to foster open conversations about mental wellness in our home, breaking down the stigma often associated with these topics. By encouraging her to express her feelings and seek help when needed, I aim to empower her to prioritize her mental health throughout her life. My goal is for her to view mental health as an integral part of her overall well-being, rather than a subject shrouded in shame or secrecy. As a mental health counselor, my clients continuously inspire me to work on my own mental health. Their courage to confront their struggles and seek help motivates me to prioritize my well-being. I am reminded that the journey of healing is ongoing, and witnessing my clients’ growth and resilience reinforces my commitment to personal development. Their stories remind me of the importance of self-care and the need to practice what I preach, as I cannot effectively support others without attending to my own mental health needs. My career aspirations as a mental health counselor are directly influenced by my personal experiences. I am motivated by the desire to help others who have faced significant challenges—whether due to trauma, mental illness, or the complexities of adjusting to a new culture as a refugee. I see my work as an opportunity to give back and to help others navigate their own mental health journeys, especially those who feel isolated or misunderstood. Ultimately, I aim not only to provide individual counseling but also to contribute to systemic improvements in the mental health field. I am particularly passionate about advocating for greater support for refugees, trauma survivors, and neurodiverse individuals, ensuring that these groups receive the care and attention they need to thrive. In many ways, my experiences have been my greatest teacher, guiding me toward a career where I can create lasting change in the lives of others. Through my ongoing education, the connections I build with my clients, and the advocacy work I intend to pursue, I am committed to using my background, knowledge, and personal experiences to uplift others and inspire the next generation, especially my daughter. I want her to understand that with perseverance, compassion, and resilience, she can achieve anything she sets her mind to while also taking care of her mental and emotional well-being. My journey as a refugee and a mental health professional is intertwined with my role as a mother. I believe that the most profound impact I can have is to raise a daughter who is not only aware of her own mental health needs but is also inspired to support others in their struggles. I want her to grow into a compassionate individual who understands the value of mental health advocacy and is unafraid to make a difference in the lives of others. By embodying these values and sharing my journey, I hope to leave a lasting legacy of empowerment, resilience, and the communities I serve.
HeySunday Scholarship for Moms in College
My journey towards further education has been greatly inspired by my desire to help others, particularly those who have faced mental health challenges like my own. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and I am currently pursuing a PhD, a choice motivated not only by my love for psychology and counseling but also by a sense of duty to assist individuals who feel misunderstood or isolated. This journey is highly personal, stemming from my own experiences with mental health difficulties as a child and later as a trauma survivor and refugee. These experiences have profoundly influenced my understanding of the importance of mental health care. As I progress in my education, my eagerness to examine this field grows—not just for my own recovery, but to offer support to others, especially within neurodiverse communities. I take pride in being the first person in my family to attend college, which has added another layer of motivation to my academic journey. Pioneering this path has been both exciting and challenging, as I have had to face obstacles without direct family guidance in navigating higher education. It has also brought pride to my family, who have consistently supported my goals. While pursuing higher education has been rewarding, it has also brought several challenges. One of the most difficult daily concerns that I face is balancing my roles as a mother and a student. My daughter is my highest priority, and it is essential for me to guarantee that she feels loved, supported, and cared for above everything else. This often leads to late nights spent completing assignments after she has gone to bed or sacrificing personal time to manage my academic workload. Also, dealing with my own mental health issues, especially ADHD and depression, has presented personal challenges that sometimes affect my focus and engagement. Nevertheless, I have found effective ways to manage both roles. Time management and setting boundaries have been important in this process. I structure my days with clear intentions, ensuring I allocate meaningful time to my daughter while also allowing for my studies. What's more, I practice self-compassion, recognizing that it is entirely okay to seek help when needed or to adjust my expectations when life feels overwhelming. My support system, particularly my family and friends, has been instrumental in guiding me through the more difficult times. Finally, my motivation lies in the understanding that by completing my education, I can make a important contribution to the mental health field. It is more than about earning a degree; it is about equipping myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to uplift others, especially those who may feel as I once did—misunderstood, struggling, and in need of someone who truly listens.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's *GUTS* that resonates with my experiences as a teenager is from the song "teenage dream": *"They all say that it gets better, it gets better, but what if I don’t?"* This line strongly expresses the intense uncertainty that often characterizes adolescence. During this time, various individuals—teachers, parents, and older friends—attempt to soothe you by insisting that the emotional, social, and personal challenges you encounter are merely temporary. Nevertheless, when you are immersed in those difficulties, trusting in the promise of a "better" future can be quite challenging. As a teenager, feeling lost or overwhelmed can often feel more like a lasting condition than a fleeting phase. The teenage years frequently bring with them high expectations and important pressure to form your identity. There is a nearly constant undercurrent of anxiety about whether you are meeting the expectations set by others, ranging from your family to your peers and society at large. You are expected to discover who you are, what you believe in, and where you are going, all while navigating the upheaval of growing up. This lyric articulates the fear that perhaps you will not meet those expectations, or even worse, that you will not "get better" or discover that sense of self and direction that people continuously assure you will eventually come. For me, this lyric also represents the widespread sense of isolation that often accompanies adolescence. During these formative years, it is easy to feel as though no one truly comprehends what you are experiencing, despite their attempts to offer comfort. Even with well-intentioned advice and support, the burden of self-doubt, confusion regarding one’s identity, and the feeling of being an outsider can seem overwhelmingly heavy. The question *"What if I don’t get better?"* resonates with the fear that I frequently experienced—that despite everyone's reassurances, maybe I would not figure things out, and perhaps I would remain trapped in that space of uncertainty and insecurity forever.Rodrigo encapsulates the emotional intensity and rollercoaster ride that growing up often entails. Adolescence is a paradoxical period filled with dreams and hope for the future, while simultaneously being haunted by doubts and fears that you may not reach those aspirations. The lyric displays the delicate interaction between envisioning a brighter future and the terror that it might never come to fruition. This sentiment is one that, for many teenagers, is profoundly relatable as they navigate the complexities of growing up and discovering their identities.
    Ella's Gift
My journey with mental health and personal growth has been marked by challenges, resilience, and a commitment to understanding the complexities of the mind. Throughout my life, I have grappled with mental health struggles, both personally and through my work as a counselor and trauma therapist. These experiences have shaped my perspective and reinforced my commitment to supporting others facing similar challenges. My journey with substance abuse and mental health, along with my educational goals, is rooted in a desire to improve my life and give back to those on similar paths. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the impact of trauma and mental illness on my family, particularly the effects of anxiety and depression. I, too, struggled with my mental health during my teenage years, feeling overwhelmed by expectations. Seeking comfort in unhealthy ways led me down a path of substance use. At the time, I thought it was a way to cope with the pain, but it only deepened my struggles and made it harder to face my emotions. Acknowledging that I needed help was the first step toward recovery. It took immense courage to admit that I could not handle everything on my own, but once I reached out, I found a network of support. Therapy became pivotal, offering me a space to confront underlying issues of trauma and self-worth. My counselor helped me see that I was not alone in my struggles and that asking for help was a sign of strength. This experience with counseling, both as a client and now as a therapist, has reinforced my belief in the importance of mental health care. Through my personal growth, I realized that mental health and substance abuse are intertwined. My recovery journey made me acutely aware of the need to address both issues simultaneously. As I gained control over my substance use, I committed to consistently working on my mental health, establishing healthy coping mechanisms. Meditation, mindfulness practices, and regular therapy became cornerstones of my routine. I sought a supportive community, knowing that recovery is not a journey to be taken alone. Sharing my story with others has been a healing process, helping me see my struggles as a source of strength. This journey has profoundly influenced my educational goals. I pursued a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and am now working toward a PhD in psychology. These academic goals are part of a larger mission to provide meaningful mental health care to individuals who are often overlooked or underserved. Through my work, I have seen gaps in care for trauma survivors, mothers experiencing postpartum depression, and refugees. As a PhD student, I am committed to advancing research and creating evidence-based interventions to better serve these populations. My future career goals revolve around expanding my capacity to support individuals struggling with mental health issues and substance use disorders. I plan to continue working as a trauma therapist, focusing on populations that need specialized care, such as neurodiverse individuals and mothers facing postpartum challenges. I hope to contribute to the academic field by mentoring future mental health professionals, particularly in trauma-informed care and addiction counseling. This mission is personal, as I have experienced firsthand the transformative power of mental health treatment and the importance of accessible care. Managing my recovery remains a top priority as I pursue these goals. I have developed a structured plan to maintain my mental health and sobriety. This plan includes regular therapy sessions to address ongoing concerns, participation in support groups where I can share experiences and learn from others, and daily mindfulness practices to help me stay grounded. I am committed to a balanced lifestyle prioritizing physical health, relationships, and self-care, knowing that all these aspects are essential to long-term recovery. Moreover, I have learned the importance of boundaries and taking breaks when needed. As a caregiver and mental health professional, it can be easy to neglect my own needs. However, I recognize that to be fully present for my clients and loved ones, I must first care for myself. This awareness has been a key aspect of my personal growth and will continue to guide me. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health and substance abuse have shaped me into a resilient, compassionate individual committed to personal and professional growth. My recovery is ongoing, but through education, therapy, and community, I have found the tools to manage it successfully. As I continue on this path, I look forward to using my experiences and education to support others on their journeys, helping them find healing, hope, and resilience in the face of adversity.

As a suicide loss survivor, my journey has been one of profound grief, complexity, and unexpected resilience. Losing a loved one to suicide is a unique and isolating experience. It brings with it a myriad of challenges, including intense feelings of guilt, anger, and confusion. One of the hardest aspects to grapple with is the "what if" questions that linger—what if I had noticed the signs, what if I had said something different, or what if I could have done something to change the outcome? These questions can weigh heavily and contribute to a sense of helplessness. Navigating the aftermath of such a loss has required me to confront my emotions head-on. I initially struggled with the stigma surrounding suicide, which often leaves survivors feeling isolated. Many people do not know how to engage with someone grieving such a loss, leading to a silence that can be deafening. I found solace in connecting with others who had experienced similar losses, realizing that I was not alone in my pain. Support groups became a lifeline, providing a space to share my feelings and hear the stories of others, allowing for a shared understanding that is difficult to find elsewhere. Through this journey, I have learned valuable lessons about the importance of vulnerability and seeking support. I discovered that it is okay to not have all the answers and that grieving is a deeply personal and individual process. I learned to honor my emotions, whether they be sadness, anger, or even moments of joy as I remember my loved one. This recognition of my multifaceted grief has allowed me to begin healing rather than suppressing my feelings. Resilience emerged slowly, often when I least expected it. I found strength in channeling my pain into advocacy for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. This shift from victimhood to action has been empowering, providing me with a sense of purpose. By sharing my story and helping others navigate their own grief, I transformed my tragedy into a catalyst for change. Hope has also taken root in my heart. While the pain of loss will always be a part of my life, I have learned that it does not have to define me. I now view my journey as a testament to the power of love, connection, and the human spirit's ability to endure. I strive to be a source of light for others who are struggling, showing them that healing is possible and that they are not alone in their pain. My experience has taught me that while tragedy can feel insurmountable, it can also lead to profound growth and an unwavering commitment to supporting those in need.

One of the most significant obstacles I’ve had to overcome in life is the impact of my mother’s experience with cardiac disease. When she was just twelve years old, she underwent open heart surgery and tragically died on the operating table. Although she was revived, this experience left an indelible mark on her life and mine. Growing up, I witnessed the long-term emotional and physical effects that this traumatic event had on her. It shaped her outlook on life, and as her child, I carried the weight of those early struggles with me. The fear of losing her was a constant presence in my life. My mother’s health was always a concern, and the knowledge that she had come so close to death created a heightened awareness of how fragile life can be. This fear impacted my emotional well-being, often causing me to feel anxious about her health and the possibility of something happening again. It was challenging to balance the normal stresses of growing up with the underlying worry that her heart condition might resurface. Despite these obstacles, I found strength in her resilience. My mother’s ability to move forward after such a traumatic experience inspired me to confront challenges in my own life with courage and determination. It also influenced my decision to pursue a career in mental health. I wanted to understand how people cope with trauma and how I could help others facing similar emotional struggles. In my work as a counselor, I draw on this personal experience to connect with clients who have faced health-related traumas, either personally or through a loved one. My mother’s story has given me a unique perspective on resilience, loss, and the emotional toll that serious health conditions can take on families. It also drives me to advocate for emotional support services for those dealing with medical trauma, knowing how crucial it is to have someone to lean on during those difficult times. Through my career and ongoing studies, I aim to provide that support for others, just as I wished someone could have done for us during those challenging years. In addition to shaping my empathy, my mother's health journey motivated me to ensure my own physical and emotional well-being. She has been a model of perseverance and compassion throughout my life. I have become deeply committed to understanding the interplay between physical and mental health and how trauma, both medical and emotional, can ripple across generations.

My favorite song on Brat by Charli XCX is "Boys." This track is a standout due to its infectious, catchy melody and upbeat production that makes it instantly memorable. Charli XCX has a knack for creating pop songs that are both innovative and accessible, and "Boys" is a perfect example of this talent. The lyrics are playful and cleverly written, exploring the theme of being distracted by thoughts of boys. The repetition of the line "I was busy thinkin' 'bout boys" captures the lighthearted, carefree nature of the song, making it highly relatable for anyone who has ever found themselves daydreaming. This whimsical approach to the lyrics adds a layer of fun to the track, making it enjoyable to listen to repeatedly. One of the most striking aspects of "Boys" is its music video, which features a diverse array of male celebrities in playful and unexpected roles. This video subverts traditional gender norms by placing men in the kind of objectified, decorative roles that women often occupy in music videos. This clever twist not only adds to the song's charm but also makes a subtle commentary on gender representation in media. The production of "Boys" is another highlight. The song features a minimalistic, bouncy beat with a prominent use of electronic sounds and hand claps, creating a polished yet playful sonic landscape. Charli XCX's vocals are delivered with a sense of casual coolness that perfectly complements the song's theme. Overall, "Boys" stands out for its blend of catchy pop sensibility, innovative production, and lighthearted energy. Love Island Fan Scholarship
My new Love Island Challenge is called: "Heartstrings Harmony" To test the couples' communication, teamwork, and emotional connection through a series of musical tasks, culminating in a duet performance that showcases their harmony as partners. At the beginning of the challenge, the host explains the rules and the objective. Couples are paired up, either by the show’s current pairing or a random draw if there are any recent recouplings or new arrivals. Each couple is given 30 minutes to write their own lyrics based on a provided theme (e.g., love, trust, adventure). They must collaborate to ensure their lyrics are meaningful and reflect their relationship. Couples then move to a music station where they choose from a selection of pre-composed melodies. They have 45 minutes to fit their lyrics to the melody, working together to find a rhythm and tune that suits their song. With their lyrics and melody in place, couples are given an hour to rehearse their song. During this time, they can seek advice from a vocal coach provided by the show to improve their performance and ensure they are in sync. In the final task, each couple performs their song in front of the other islanders and a panel of guest judges, which may include a professional musician, a former Love Island contestant, and a music industry expert. The performance should showcase not only their musical talents but also their emotional connection and teamwork. Couples are judged based on creativity, harmony, stage presence, and the emotional impact of their performance. Bonus points are given for originality and how well the song reflects their relationship. The winning couple receives a romantic date night set up in a special location within the villa, complete with a private concert from a popular musical artist and a luxury dinner. "Heartstrings Harmony" challenges the couples to work together creatively, reinforcing their bond through music and collaboration. This challenge highlights the importance of communication and emotional connection, while also providing a fun and entertaining experience for both participants and viewers.

Adapted from Julia Quinn's beloved novels, the show transports viewers into a world of aristocratic splendor, where societal conventions, scandalous secrets, and passionate affairs unfold with irresistible allure. At the heart of "Bridgerton" is the Bridgerton family, headed by the formidable Lady Violet Bridgerton, whose wit and wisdom guide her children through the complexities of London's high society. Each of the eight Bridgerton siblings possesses their own distinctive personalities and aspirations, adding depth and variety to the narrative. The eldest daughter, Daphne Bridgerton, serves as the central protagonist whose journey from debutante to a woman of substance drives much of the series' plot. Daphne's story becomes intertwined with that of the enigmatic Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset. Portrayed with brooding charm by Regé-Jean Page, Simon is a complex character burdened by his past and adamant in his refusal to marry. Their evolving relationship—from a strategic courtship to a genuine and deeply passionate love affair—forms the emotional core of "Bridgerton," captivating viewers with its intensity, vulnerability, and undeniable chemistry. What sets "Bridgerton" apart is its meticulous attention to detail and visual splendor. The production design transports audiences into the opulent world of 19th-century England, with grand ballrooms, sumptuous estates, and exquisite period costumes that shimmer with authenticity. Each scene is meticulously crafted to evoke the glamour and extravagance of the era, creating a sensory feast that immerses viewers in the world of high society. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, "Bridgerton" excels in its portrayal of multifaceted characters grappling with love, duty, and personal identity. Daphne's journey from innocence to strength is compelling, as she navigates the expectations placed upon her as a debutante while striving to find true love and independence. Meanwhile, Simon's internal conflict and emotional growth challenge traditional notions of masculinity and familial duty, adding depth and complexity to his character arc. The ensemble cast delivers standout performances, bringing the diverse array of characters—from the conniving Lady Featherington to the charismatic Eloise Bridgerton—to vibrant life. Their interactions and relationships are infused with wit, humor, and emotional resonance, making each episode a captivating exploration of human desires and ambitions. "Bridgerton" is also celebrated for its diverse casting choices, which reflect a more inclusive representation of historical society. This diversity enriches the narrative tapestry, offering perspectives and stories that resonate with modern audiences while honoring the historical context of the period. The show's commitment to inclusivity extends beyond casting, addressing themes of race, class, and gender dynamics with nuance and sensitivity. In conclusion, "Bridgerton" is not just a period drama—it's a sweeping saga of love, passion, and societal intrigue that captivates from start to finish. Whether you're drawn to its lush visuals, compelling characters, or its exploration of timeless themes, the series promises an immersive and unforgettable binge-watching experience. Once you enter the world of "Bridgerton," you'll find yourself enthralled by its charm, swept away by its romance, and eagerly awaiting each new episode to uncover more of its captivating storylines and emotional depth.

Rosetta Richardson's Trailblazer Elderly Care Scholarship
My focus on the study of breast cancer, dementia, and stroke, particularly within the elderly population, is driven by both personal experiences and professional aspirations. Witnessing the profound impact these conditions have on individuals and their families has deeply influenced my dedication to this field. My journey is marked by the intersection of personal encounters, professional responsibilities, and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the elderly. Personal experiences with breast cancer and dementia have been particularly poignant. Watching loved ones navigate the challenges of breast cancer treatment and the cognitive decline associated with dementia has provided me with an intimate understanding of the physical, emotional, and psychological toll these conditions take. The resilience and courage of my family members in the face of such adversity have inspired me to contribute to improving the quality of life for others facing similar struggles. I have seen firsthand the fear, uncertainty, and stress that accompany these diagnoses, as well as the significant impact they have on family dynamics and caregiving roles. My professional role as a counselor has further reinforced my commitment to focusing on these conditions. Working with elderly individuals who have been affected by breast cancer, dementia, or stroke has allowed me to witness firsthand the unique challenges they face. These conditions often lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression, and addressing the mental health aspect is crucial for comprehensive care. My work involves providing emotional support, developing coping strategies, and connecting patients and their families with essential resources. I have had the privilege of supporting patients through their most vulnerable moments, helping them find strength and resilience, and guiding their families through the complex and often overwhelming journey of caregiving. The decision to specialize in these areas has profoundly impacted my personal and professional goals. It has driven me to pursue advanced training and education to better understand the complexities of these conditions and their impact on the elderly. I have become an advocate for holistic care approaches that address both physical and mental health needs, recognizing that emotional well-being is integral to overall recovery and quality of life. My commitment to continuous learning and professional development ensures that I stay informed about the latest research, treatments, and best practices in the field. Additionally, my experiences have motivated me to engage in community outreach and education. Raising awareness about breast cancer, dementia, and stroke, particularly among the elderly and their caregivers, is a crucial part of my mission. I strive to empower individuals with knowledge about early detection, prevention, and available support systems. By fostering a sense of community and support, I aim to alleviate some of the burdens these conditions impose on patients and their families. I have organized and participated in workshops, seminars, and support groups, providing valuable information and creating safe spaces for individuals to share their experiences and seek support. Moreover, my personal encounters with these conditions have fueled my desire to advocate for policy changes and improved healthcare services. I believe that addressing the needs of the elderly population requires a multi-faceted approach, involving healthcare providers, policymakers, and the community at large. By advocating for better access to screening, treatment, and support services, I hope to contribute to a healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of the elderly and ensures they receive the care and attention they deserve. Breast cancer, dementia, and stroke are prevalent conditions among the elderly, and each presents unique challenges. Breast cancer, for example, is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. Early detection through regular screenings such as mammograms can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates. However, many elderly women may not have access to regular screenings due to financial constraints, mobility issues, or lack of awareness. My goal is to address these barriers by promoting awareness campaigns, advocating for accessible screening programs, and providing support for those undergoing treatment. Dementia, on the other hand, is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. The emotional and psychological impact of dementia on patients and their families is profound. Caregivers often face significant stress and burnout as they navigate the challenges of caring for a loved one with dementia. Through my work, I aim to provide support and resources for caregivers, helping them develop coping strategies and access respite care. Additionally, I advocate for dementia-friendly communities that are designed to support individuals with dementia in maintaining their independence and quality of life. Stroke is another major concern for the elderly population, often resulting in long-term disability. The immediate medical response to a stroke is critical, but the journey of recovery and rehabilitation can be lengthy and demanding. My focus is on promoting stroke awareness, encouraging lifestyle changes to reduce risk factors, and supporting rehabilitation efforts. By providing education on recognizing the signs of a stroke and the importance of timely medical intervention, I hope to improve outcomes for stroke patients. One of the key elements in my approach to supporting individuals with breast cancer, dementia, and stroke is the integration of mental health care. The psychological impact of these conditions can be devastating, and addressing mental health is essential for comprehensive care. For instance, depression and anxiety are common among breast cancer patients, and providing counseling and support groups can significantly improve their quality of life. Similarly, individuals with dementia may experience feelings of confusion, frustration, and loss, and having access to mental health support can help them and their caregivers navigate these emotions. In my role as a counselor, I emphasize the importance of a person-centered approach to care. This means recognizing the unique needs, preferences, and strengths of each individual and tailoring interventions accordingly. For example, in working with elderly breast cancer patients, I consider their overall health, mobility, and support system when developing a care plan. For dementia patients, I focus on creating a structured environment that provides stability and reduces confusion. For stroke survivors, I work on setting realistic goals for rehabilitation and encouraging them to take an active role in their recovery. My dedication to this field is also reflected in my involvement in research and advocacy. Staying informed about the latest advancements in breast cancer treatment, dementia care, and stroke rehabilitation is crucial for providing the best possible support to my clients. I actively participate in professional organizations, attend conferences, and contribute to research projects that aim to improve outcomes for the elderly population. By staying engaged with the latest developments, I ensure that my practice is evidence-based and aligned with best practices. Furthermore, I am committed to advocating for policy changes that improve access to care for the elderly. This includes lobbying for funding for breast cancer screening programs, pushing for the implementation of dementia-friendly community initiatives, and supporting legislation that enhances stroke rehabilitation services. Advocacy is a powerful tool for creating systemic change, and I believe that by working together with other healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community organizations, we can make a significant impact on the lives of the elderly. In conclusion, my focus on the study of breast cancer, dementia, and stroke in the elderly population is deeply rooted in personal experiences and professional commitments. This decision has shaped my goals, driving me to pursue advanced education, advocate for comprehensive care, and engage in community outreach. Through my work, I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of elderly individuals and their families, offering them support, hope, and a better quality of life. By integrating my personal experiences with professional expertise, I aim to contribute to a society that values and prioritizes the health and well-being of its elderly population, ensuring they receive the dignity, respect, and care they deserve.
    Future Leaders Scholarship
During my professional journey as a counselor, I had the opportunity to demonstrate exceptional leadership skills while implementing a mental health awareness program in a local high school. This initiative aimed to reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and provide students with the resources and support they needed to thrive both academically and personally. The challenge was significant. Many students and faculty members were hesitant to openly discuss mental health, largely due to deeply ingrained cultural stigmas and a lack of understanding. Additionally, coordinating the program required gaining the support of the school administration, training teachers, and ensuring the participation of students. The school community's initial resistance was a major hurdle, as mental health discussions were often seen as taboo. To address these challenges, I adopted a multi-faceted strategy. First, I conducted a series of meetings with the school administration to highlight the importance of mental health awareness and present data on the positive impact such programs have on student well-being and academic performance. I emphasized the long-term benefits of mental health support, such as improved student engagement, reduced absenteeism, and better academic outcomes. Through persistent communication and presenting well-researched evidence, I was able to gain the administration’s full backing. Next, I organized training sessions for teachers to equip them with the knowledge and skills to support students facing mental health challenges. These sessions included workshops on identifying signs of mental distress, providing initial support, and referring students to appropriate resources. I also provided teachers with materials and resources to integrate mental health discussions into their regular classroom activities, making the topic more approachable for students. For the students, I developed an engaging and relatable curriculum, incorporating interactive workshops, guest speakers, and peer support groups. We organized events such as Mental Health Awareness Week, which included activities like mindfulness sessions, stress management workshops, and inspirational talks from individuals who had overcome mental health challenges. I emphasized creating a safe and inclusive environment where students felt comfortable sharing their experiences and seeking help. Peer support groups played a crucial role, as they allowed students to connect with others facing similar issues, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. The impact of the program was profound. Over time, there was a noticeable shift in the school culture. Students became more open about discussing their mental health, and there was a significant increase in the number of students seeking counseling services. Teachers reported a better understanding of how to support their students, and the administration committed to continuing the program in the following years. The school saw an overall improvement in student well-being and academic performance, validating the program's effectiveness. In my future career, I plan to apply these leadership skills by advocating for and implementing comprehensive mental health programs in various educational and community settings. I aim to continue fostering environments where mental health is openly discussed, understood, and supported. My goal is to create sustainable programs that empower individuals to take charge of their mental health and build supportive communities around them. By leveraging my experience and the success of past initiatives, I hope to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and contribute to a society that values and prioritizes mental well-being.

The emotional and physical toll these conditions can take is immense, and the journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery is often long and arduous. These experiences have instilled in me a sense of urgency and responsibility to prioritize my own breast health and to advocate for regular screenings and preventive measures within my community. Professionally, my role as a counselor has brought me into contact with many individuals who have been affected by breast health issues. The psychological impact of a breast cancer diagnosis, for instance, can be overwhelming. Patients often grapple with fear, anxiety, and depression, alongside the physical challenges of their treatment. As a mental health professional, I have seen firsthand how crucial it is to address these emotional aspects, providing support and resources to help individuals cope. Understanding the intersection of physical and mental health has only strengthened my resolve to promote comprehensive breast health care. Moreover, my work with neurodiverse individuals has highlighted the importance of accessible and inclusive healthcare. Ensuring that breast health information and services are available to all, regardless of neurodiversity, is a key concern for me. Neurodiverse individuals may face unique challenges in accessing healthcare, and it is vital to advocate for systems and practices that accommodate their needs. This includes providing clear communication, sensory-friendly environments, and empathetic support throughout their healthcare journey. Breast health is not just about preventing or detecting cancer; it is about maintaining overall well-being. Regular self-exams, clinical exams, and mammograms are critical components of a proactive health regimen. These practices enable early detection, which is crucial for successful treatment outcomes. Educating others about these preventive measures and encouraging them to stay vigilant about their breast health is a mission I take to heart. In Texas, where gender disparities in healthcare can be pronounced, advocating for breast health becomes even more crucial. Women, particularly those from marginalized communities, may face barriers to accessing quality healthcare. These barriers can include lack of insurance, limited availability of services, and cultural stigmas. Addressing these disparities and working towards equitable healthcare access is a cause that aligns with my broader commitment to social justice and equality. In conclusion, breast health is of paramount importance to me due to a combination of personal experiences, professional responsibilities, and a deep commitment to promoting comprehensive and inclusive healthcare. By prioritizing breast health, we can not only prevent and detect serious conditions but also foster a sense of empowerment and control over our well-being. Through advocacy, education, and support, I strive to contribute to a world where everyone has the knowledge and resources to maintain their breast health, ensuring better outcomes and a higher quality of life for all.

Addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time requires a concerted effort to rethink our approach to transportation, particularly in sprawling urban centers like Houston. Among the myriad environmental issues facing us, one of the most pressing is the impact of transportation on air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and overall urban sustainability. Houston, known for its extensive highway systems and reliance on automobiles, faces significant challenges related to air pollution and traffic congestion. These issues not only degrade air quality but also contribute to health problems such as respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular diseases. As such, transitioning to more sustainable transportation options is crucial for mitigating these impacts and fostering a healthier urban environment. One of the key solutions lies in promoting and expanding alternative modes of transportation beyond traditional car usage. This includes: Enhancing and expanding Houston's public transit infrastructure, such as buses, light rail, and commuter trains, can encourage more residents to choose public transportation over private vehicles. Improving connectivity, frequency, and reliability of services can make public transit a more attractive and convenient option for daily commuters. Creating dedicated bike lanes, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and bike-sharing programs can incentivize residents to cycle or walk for short-distance trips. Not only does this reduce reliance on cars, but it also promotes physical activity and reduces carbon emissions associated with motorized transportation. Encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles through incentives such as tax credits, subsidies for EV infrastructure (charging stations), and public awareness campaigns can accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation options. This shift not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also contributes to improved air quality by eliminating tailpipe emissions. Promoting carpooling and ride-sharing services through incentives and dedicated lanes can reduce the number of vehicles on the road, easing traffic congestion and lowering overall emissions per capita. Smart technologies and apps can facilitate efficient matching of riders and drivers, optimizing vehicle occupancy and reducing transportation costs for users. Encouraging sustainable urban planning practices, such as mixed-use development, transit-oriented development (TOD), and smart growth principles, can reduce urban sprawl and promote compact, walkable communities. This approach minimizes the need for long-distance commuting and supports a more sustainable urban lifestyle. In my efforts to contribute to solving Houston's environmental challenges, particularly in transportation, I am committed to advocating for and supporting these alternative solutions. As a resident, I would actively engage with local government and community organizations to promote policies and initiatives that prioritize sustainable transportation options. This includes participating in public forums, advocating for increased funding for public transit and cycling infrastructure, and supporting campaigns that raise awareness about the benefits of reducing car dependency. I would strive to lead by example in my personal transportation choices, opting for public transit, cycling, or walking whenever feasible. By demonstrating the practicality and benefits of these alternative modes of transportation, I hope to inspire others to make environmentally conscious decisions in their daily lives. In conclusion, addressing Houston's environmental challenges through sustainable transportation solutions requires collective action, innovative policies, and individual commitment. By embracing and advocating for public transit, cycling, EV adoption, carpooling, and smart urban planning, we can pave the way towards a more sustainable and livable city for current and future generations.
    Nikhil Desai Reinventing Healthcare Scholarship
If I could change our current healthcare system with a soft focus on mental health, one crucial change I would prioritize is ensuring universal access to affordable mental health care services. Mental health issues are pervasive and often overlooked, impacting individuals' quality of life and overall health. Here’s how I envision implementing this change: 1. Universal Coverage for Mental Health Services: I would advocate for comprehensive health insurance coverage that treats mental health services with parity to physical health services. This means ensuring that everyone, regardless of income or background, has access to essential mental health screenings, therapy, psychiatric care, and medication without financial barriers or limitations. 2. Integration of Mental Health into Primary Care: I would promote the integration of mental health screenings and services into primary care settings. By incorporating routine mental health assessments during regular check-ups, we can identify issues early, provide timely interventions, and offer holistic care that addresses both physical and mental well-being. 3. Expansion of Telepsychiatry and Teletherapy: I would support the expansion of telepsychiatry and teletherapy services to increase access in underserved areas and among marginalized populations. These technologies enable individuals to receive mental health care remotely, overcoming geographical barriers and improving convenience and accessibility. 4. Investment in Mental Health Workforce: I would prioritize increasing the number of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers. This would involve funding for training programs, scholarships, and incentives to attract professionals to underserved communities and populations in need. 5. Community-Based Mental Health Support: I would advocate for investment in community-based mental health resources such as clinics, support groups, crisis hotlines, and outreach programs. These initiatives provide education, prevention, and early intervention services, empowering communities to address mental health challenges proactively. 6. Destigmatization and Education: I would emphasize destigmatizing mental illness through widespread education campaigns, school-based programs, and community initiatives. By promoting open dialogue and understanding, we can create a culture where seeking mental health care is seen as a normal and proactive step towards overall well-being. By implementing these sweeping changes, we can create a healthcare system that prioritizes mental health care as a fundamental component of comprehensive care. This approach would promote early intervention, reduce disparities in access to mental health services, and improve outcomes for individuals living with mental illness. Ultimately, it would contribute to a society where mental health is supported, respected, and integrated into every aspect of healthcare delivery.

Embodying selflessness involves prioritizing the needs and well-being of others above one's own desires and interests. It's about acting with generosity, compassion, and empathy towards others, often without expecting anything in return. Here are examples of times when I have helped someone in need, illustrating how I strive to embody selflessness: 1. **Volunteer Work:** I regularly volunteer at a local shelter for homeless individuals and families. This involvement includes serving meals, organizing donation drives, and offering companionship to those who may be experiencing hardship. By dedicating my time and energy to support vulnerable members of my community, I aim to make a meaningful difference in their lives and provide them with essential resources and emotional support. 2. **Supporting a Friend:** A close friend of mine recently went through a challenging period of personal loss. I offered my support by actively listening to them, providing emotional reassurance, and being there whenever they needed someone to talk to. I made an effort to check in regularly, offer practical assistance, and prioritize their well-being above my own schedule and commitments. 3. **Assisting Elderly Neighbors:** I have elderly neighbors who sometimes need help with tasks such as grocery shopping, yard work, or home repairs. Whenever I see an opportunity to lend a hand, I willingly offer my assistance without hesitation. Whether it's mowing the lawn, running errands, or simply keeping them company, I strive to alleviate their burdens and enhance their quality of life through acts of kindness and support. 4. **Educational Mentorship:** As a mentor to younger students in my community, I devote time to providing guidance, encouragement, and academic support. I assist them with their studies, offer advice on navigating challenges, and serve as a positive role model. Technology has become increasingly integral in the field of psychiatry and mental health therapy, offering innovative solutions that enhance patient care, improve treatment outcomes, and expand access to services. Allied health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and therapists, can leverage these advancements to provide more efficient and effective care. One of the significant advancements in mental health care is the proliferation of telepsychiatry and teletherapy. These technologies allow mental health professionals to conduct therapy sessions remotely, overcoming barriers such as geographical distance, transportation issues, and stigma associated with seeking therapy. Telepsychiatry enables patients to receive timely interventions and ongoing support from the comfort of their homes, promoting continuity of care and reducing the likelihood of missed appointments. Digital mental health platforms and mobile applications have also transformed how therapy is delivered and accessed. These platforms offer a range of services, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) modules, mindfulness exercises, mood tracking tools, and virtual support groups. Patients can access therapeutic resources anytime, anywhere, empowering them to actively participate in their treatment and manage their mental health more proactively. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms play a crucial role in mental health diagnostics and treatment planning. AI-powered tools analyze large datasets of patient information to identify patterns, predict outcomes, and personalize treatment approaches. For example, AI can assist psychiatrists in diagnosing mental health disorders more accurately by analyzing speech patterns, facial expressions, and other behavioral cues. Virtual reality (VR) therapy is another promising technology that is revolutionizing mental health treatment. VR environments simulate real-world scenarios that help patients confront and manage anxiety, PTSD, phobias, and other mental health challenges in a controlled and immersive setting. Therapists can customize VR experiences to gradually expose patients to their fears, facilitating desensitization and therapeutic progress. Furthermore, wearable devices and biometric sensors provide valuable insights into patients' physiological and emotional states outside of traditional clinical settings. These devices can track sleep patterns, heart rate variability, activity levels, and stress responses, offering objective data that informs treatment decisions and enhances therapists' understanding of their patients' overall well-being. In the realm of psychiatric research, neuroimaging technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) have advanced our understanding of brain function and connectivity in psychiatric disorders. These imaging techniques help researchers identify biomarkers, study treatment effects, and develop targeted interventions that improve patient outcomes. Ethical considerations and patient privacy are paramount in the integration of technology in mental health care. Professionals must adhere to strict confidentiality standards and ensure that technological solutions comply with healthcare regulations and guidelines. Additionally, ongoing training and education are essential to equip mental health professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively utilize these technologies in their practice. Overall, technology continues to shape the landscape of psychiatry and mental health therapy, offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance patient care, improve treatment outcomes, and promote mental well-being. By embracing these advancements thoughtfully and responsibly, allied health professionals can leverage technology to deliver more personalized, accessible, and effective mental health services to individuals in need.

On the day of the concert, the excitement reached a fever pitch. We spent the afternoon preparing, picking out the perfect outfits and creating homemade signs adorned with glitter and messages of admiration for Taylor. My daughter chose a sparkly dress reminiscent of the one Taylor wore in the “Love Story” music video, complete with a flower crown that made her look like a little princess. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation as she talked about the songs she hoped to hear and how amazing it would be to see Taylor Swift perform live. As we arrived at the venue, the atmosphere was electric. Thousands of fans, young and old, buzzed with excitement, sharing stories of their favorite Taylor moments and speculating about the night's setlist. My daughter clutched my hand tightly, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the sights and sounds. The arena was a sea of colorful lights and excited chatter, and I could see her awe and amazement grow with every passing moment. Every song was a spectacle, with elaborate stage setups, stunning visuals, and Taylor’s captivating performance. My daughter sang along to every word, her voice mingling with the thousands of fans around us. But the highlight of the night came when the opening chords of “Love Story” filled the arena. My daughter’s face was a picture of pure, unadulterated happiness. She jumped to her feet, singing at the top of her lungs, her eyes never leaving Taylor. Seeing her so ecstatic and immersed in the moment was incredibly heartwarming. It was a magical moment of connection, not just with the music but also between the two of us, as we shared this special experience. Throughout the concert, I couldn't help but be moved by the sheer joy and wonder on my daughter's face. Every song, every dance move, every moment was a new delight for her. She cheered, she danced, and she sang her heart out, reveling in the magic of her first concert. It was a night of pure happiness, where the worries of the world melted away, and all that mattered was the music and the joy it brought. As the concert drew to a close and the final notes faded, my daughter was still on cloud nine. Her cheeks were flushed with excitement, and her eyes sparkled with the thrill of the experience. On the way home, she couldn’t stop talking about her favorite moments, the songs she loved the most, and how amazing it was to see Taylor Swift in person. It was a night that left an indelible mark on her young heart, a memory she would cherish forever.

As a mother of two young girls, I want to show them that reaching for your dreams is possible with a healthy support system and a leap of faith. As a refugee, I believe meeting my academic and professional goals is my version of fulfilling the American dream. As a Licensed professional counselor, my dream is to help shape a new generation of emotionally healthy adults and children to change and break generational trauma. I am a refugee from Bosnia that escaped the genocide of the 1990's, a first generation college student, a child of divorce, a mother of two daughters and an animal lover. I hold a license as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and have been accepted to Liberty University to pursue a PhD in psychology, I plan to use the PhD program to increase my scope of practice for the benefit of my current and future clients. As I also plan to pursue the LPC Supervisor licensure, advanced knowledge will help my future licensees to be better clinicians. My life journey has led me to a profound appreciation for the mosaic of human experiences, and it has become the driving force behind my commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding. Through my struggles, I discovered the transformative power of self-love and acceptance. Seeking therapy became an integral part of my journey, allowing me to unravel the layers of my identity and find peace with the dualities of my cultural heritage. Learning to love myself for who I am, with all the complexities of my dual cultural background, became a crucial aspect of my personal growth. My lived experience has led me from an undergraduate education in speech pathology and Deaf education to working in behavioral analysis with children with Autism and finally landing in counseling. I have always wanted to help people and use my story to hopefully encourage others to feel connected and less alone in the world. I believe that healing from our life wounds is best done in community and with people who help us feel safe and allow us to be our true selves. My focus in my practice is trauma and maternal mental health, the integration of this being fertility and birth trauma. I have worked with hundreds of parents and parents to be who are struggling with infertility, loss, complicated medical stressors, and comorbid mental health struggles that make this time of life less sparkly than it "should" be. While completing my graduate studies and postgraduate internship, I had two difficult pregnancies that gave me a heart for working with this population. Helping my clients break through trauma and shame and feel like they are actively participating in their lives has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I am also the primary income earner of my household. This scholarship would go a long way in reducing stressors in my home and allowing me to feel more peace about the decision to go back to school. Even though the financial aspect of a doctoral degree does scare me, I do believe that this will benefit myself, my family and my clients.

    Texas Women Empowerment Scholarship
The motivation to confront gender disparity in Texas stems from both personal experiences and a deep-seated desire to foster equality and empowerment for women in our state. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that women in my family and community faced due to gender bias. These experiences have profoundly shaped my perspective and ignited a passion to advocate for change. One of the most pivotal experiences occurred during my high school years. My mother, a talented and hardworking professional, was passed over for a promotion in favor of a less qualified male colleague. This blatant injustice had a significant impact on our family, not just financially but emotionally as well. Witnessing her resilience and determination in the face of such adversity taught me the importance of standing up against gender discrimination. It made me acutely aware of the systemic barriers that women often encounter in their professional lives and inspired me to seek ways to dismantle these obstacles. In addition to my mother's experience, I have observed the broader societal issues that perpetuate gender disparity. For instance, I have seen how limited access to education and healthcare disproportionately affects women in certain communities. These observations have reinforced my commitment to addressing these inequalities and have motivated me to contribute to meaningful change. I hope to attend the online at Liberty University, where I plan to pursue a PhD in psychology with a focus on women's studies. Through my education, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of the root causes of gender disparity and to explore innovative solutions to these complex issues. My ultimate goal is to use my degree to work towards improving the lives of women in Texas. I aspire to create and implement programs that provide women with better access to education, healthcare, and professional opportunities. By doing so, I hope to empower women to achieve their full potential and to challenge the societal norms that restrict their progress. In terms of my past efforts, I have been actively involved in volunteer work aimed at promoting gender equality. I volunteered with a local nonprofit organization that provides support and resources to survivors of domestic violence. Through this work, I gained valuable insights into the struggles that many women face and the importance of providing comprehensive support services. Additionally, I have participated in community outreach programs that focus on educating young girls about their rights and opportunities, encouraging them to pursue their dreams regardless of societal expectations. Furthermore, I have engaged in advocacy efforts, such as organizing and participating in awareness campaigns and rallies that address issues like the gender pay gap and reproductive rights. These experiences have not only deepened my understanding of the challenges at hand but have also strengthened my resolve to be a proactive agent of change. In summary, my motivation to confront gender disparity in Texas is deeply rooted in personal experiences and a commitment to social justice. Through my education at the University of Texas at Austin and my future career, I hope to make a significant impact on the lives of women in our state. By advocating for equitable access to resources and opportunities, I aim to help create a more inclusive and fair society where all women can thrive.

My uncle's journey is one that has profoundly shaped my own aspirations and motivations. His story of resilience, hard work, and dedication is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of selfless service. Moving to the United States from Bosnia as a child, he faced numerous challenges that many of us can only imagine. Yet, through sheer determination and an unwavering commitment to his goals, he carved out a path of success that continues to inspire me every day. When my uncle arrived in the U.S., he was thrust into an unfamiliar world with a new language, culture, and set of expectations. Despite these hurdles, he embraced his new environment with a fierce resolve to make the most of the opportunities available to him. He excelled in school, not because it came easily, but because he worked tirelessly to understand and master the material. His efforts were not just about personal achievement; they were driven by a desire to honor his family's sacrifices and to build a better future. One of the most remarkable aspects of my uncle's journey is how he managed to pay his way through college. In addition to his rigorous academic commitments, he took on multiple jobs to support himself financially. This meant long hours, sleepless nights, and an immense amount of stress. However, he never let these challenges deter him. Instead, he used them as fuel to keep pushing forward. His determination paid off, and he graduated with honors, setting the stage for an illustrious career. Today, my uncle is an officer in the Air Force, working in intelligence. His role is critical to the safety and security of our nation, and he approaches it with the same dedication and excellence that has characterized his entire life. His service is not just a job; it is a calling that reflects his deep-seated values of duty, honor, and country. His contributions have not only earned him respect and admiration within the military but have also set a powerful example for those around him, including me. My uncle's legacy of service has profoundly influenced my own career path as a mental health counselor. Witnessing his commitment to helping others and his ability to overcome adversity has inspired me to dedicate my life to supporting those who face their own challenges. Like my uncle, I strive to make a difference in the lives of others, providing them with the tools and support they need to navigate their struggles and achieve their goals. In my work, I aim to embody the same principles that my uncle has demonstrated throughout his life. I approach each day with a sense of purpose and a commitment to making a positive impact. Whether working with individuals dealing with mental health issues, supporting families in crisis, or advocating for greater awareness and resources, I am driven by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive. My uncle's story is a constant reminder that no obstacle is insurmountable and that hard work and dedication can lead to extraordinary outcomes. His journey from a young immigrant facing immense challenges to a respected officer in the Air Force is a powerful testament to what can be achieved through perseverance and a commitment to service. His example inspires me to strive for excellence in my own life and to support others in their pursuit of happiness and success. In honoring his legacy, I hope to continue the tradition of service that he has so admirably exemplified, making a difference in the lives of those I am privileged to work with as a trauma counselor.

Throughout my school years, I faced challenges that seemed unexplainable at the time. My peers appeared to grasp concepts more quickly than I did, while I struggled to stay focused and organized. Tasks that were straightforward for others often felt insurmountable to me. I would spend hours with my mind wandering aimlessly. This led to an overwhelming sense of frustration and a belief that I simply wasn’t trying hard enough. Unbeknownst to me, I was dealing with undiagnosed ADHD. The constant battle to concentrate and the frequent distractions were not due to a lack of effort or intelligence but rather the result of an underlying condition. Unfortunately, without a diagnosis, I had no framework to understand these difficulties. Instead, I internalized them as personal failings. I developed coping mechanisms to mask my struggles, such as working late into the night to complete assignments that took others a fraction of the time. This extra effort often paid off in terms of grades, but it came at the cost of my mental and emotional well-being. The impact of undiagnosed ADHD extended beyond the classroom. In social settings, I found it challenging to follow conversations or remember details, which made maintaining friendships difficult. I often felt like an outsider, watching others engage effortlessly while I grappled with my own thoughts. This sense of isolation compounded the feelings of inadequacy I experienced in my academic life. This not only affected my productivity but also led to heightened stress and anxiety, as I constantly worried about falling short of expectations. The turning point came when I was finally diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. The diagnosis was both a revelation and a relief. For the first time, I had a name for the challenges I had faced for so long. Understanding that my struggles were not due to a lack of effort or intelligence but rather a medical condition lifted a tremendous weight off my shoulders. The shame that had been a constant companion began to dissipate. With the diagnosis came access to resources and strategies that could help me manage my symptoms more effectively. I learned about techniques to improve focus and organization, and I began to implement them in my daily life. Additionally, medication provided a much-needed boost in concentration, allowing me to complete tasks more efficiently and with less mental strain. The difference was remarkable. Tasks that once felt impossible became manageable, and I started to experience a sense of competence and confidence that had long eluded me. Reflecting on my journey, I realize that the shame I carried was deeply intertwined with the misunderstanding of my own mind. The diagnosis of ADHD was not just a medical revelation; it was a profound shift in how I viewed myself. It allowed me to replace self-criticism with self-compassion and to recognize that my worth was not defined by my struggles. Today, in my work as a counselor, my aim is to help other neurodiverse individuals feel comfortable in their own skin. I am committed to advocating for others who may be on a similar journey, offering support and guidance to help them understand and embrace their unique challenges and strengths. The shame has been replaced with a sense of empowerment, and I strive to instill this same sense of self-acceptance and confidence in those I work with. Together, we can create a more inclusive and understanding world for neurodiverse people.

In 1996, my family and I embarked on a journey that would forever shape the course of our lives. Fleeing the war-ridden country of Bosnia, we arrived as refugees in the United States. Little did I know that this migration, while promising a new beginning, would also usher in a profound sense of otherness that would persist through my childhood and beyond. Arriving in a foreign land, I found myself grappling with the challenges of adapting to a new culture, language, and societal norms. The Texan landscape, vastly different from the war-torn mountains and hills of former Yugoslavia, presented both opportunities and hardships. The unfamiliarity of my surroundings, coupled with the complexities of navigating a new identity, fostered a sense of isolation that extended even within the confines of my own family. The cultural disparities between my country of origin and my adopted homeland became apparent, and I found myself caught between two worlds. The struggle to assimilate and fit in fueled a profound sense of difference, not only from my new community but also from my own family of origin. The generational and cultural gaps strained my relationship with my parents, leaving me feeling like an outsider in my own home. It was through these early hardships that I began to develop a heightened sense of empathy and compassion for those who, like me, felt different or left out. The experience of being a refugee, coupled with the challenges of cultural adaptation, instilled in me a deep understanding of the struggles faced by individuals who find themselves on the margins of society. As I navigated through the intricate tapestry of my identity, I realized the importance of embracing diversity and celebrating the richness that comes from cultural differences. My journey led me to a profound appreciation for the mosaic of human experiences, and it became the driving force behind my commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding. Today, my worldview extends beyond the immediate surroundings, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. The hardships of being a refugee, the challenges of cultural assimilation, and the internal journey towards self-love have collectively shaped me into an advocate for compassion and inclusivity. I am driven by a deep commitment to creating a space where everyone, regardless of their background, feels seen, heard, and valued. In conclusion, my journey from Bosnia to Texas, marked by the struggles of displacement and cultural adaptation, has not only instilled in me a profound compassion for those who feel different but has also empowered me to embrace my own unique identity, fueling my work as an LPC. As a mother of two young girls, I want to show them that reaching for your dreams is possible with a healthy support system and a leap of faith.

As a mother of two young girls, I want to show them that reaching for your dreams is possible with a healthy support system and a leap of faith. Stephen King's novel "The Shining" and Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of the same name are often regarded as two distinct entities, with devoted fans of each debating the merits of one over the other. While the two works share the same basic premise—a family isolated in a haunted hotel during the winter—King's novel and Kubrick's film diverge significantly in their narrative approach, thematic emphasis, and character development. Despite these differences, however, they ultimately complement each other, offering audiences unique perspectives on the horrors of isolation, addiction, and the unraveling of the human psyche. In King's novel, the narrative unfolds primarily through the internal thoughts and perspectives of its characters, particularly Jack Torrance, the troubled patriarch whose descent into madness drives much of the plot. Through Jack's struggles with alcoholism, his troubled relationship with his family, and the malevolent forces at work in the Overlook Hotel, King delves deep into themes of addiction, family dynamics, and the supernatural. The novel's slow burn approach allows readers to immerse themselves in the psychological torment of its characters, building tension and suspense with each turn of the page. In contrast, Kubrick's film adaptation takes a more visually-driven and ambiguous approach to storytelling. While the basic plot remains intact, Kubrick's interpretation focuses less on the internal struggles of its characters and more on the eerie atmosphere and haunting imagery of the hotel itself. Through meticulous set design, cinematography, and a haunting musical score, Kubrick creates a sense of unease and dread that permeates every frame of the film. Jack Nicholson's iconic portrayal of Jack Torrance as a man teetering on the brink of madness further enhances the film's sense of impending doom. Despite these differences, King's novel and Kubrick's film complement each other in their exploration of the themes of isolation, addiction, and the unraveling of the human psyche. While the novel delves deep into the internal struggles of its characters, the film uses visual storytelling to create a sense of unease and foreboding. Together, they offer audiences a comprehensive look at the horrors of the human condition, from the personal demons that haunt us to the external forces that seek to destroy us. In conclusion, while Stephen King's novel "The Shining" and Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation may be opposite in their narrative approach, they ultimately complement each other in their exploration of universal themes and the human experience. Whether experienced through the pages of a book or on the silver screen, "The Shining" continues to captivate audiences with its chilling portrayal of isolation, addiction, and the darkness that lurks within us all.

In the quiet suburban neighborhood where I grew up, tragedy struck unexpectedly, leaving an indelible mark on my perspective and ultimately steering the course of my life's purpose. The fateful event was the untimely death of my neighbor, a person whose struggles with mental health reached a devastating climax in the form of suicide. This heartbreaking experience sparked a profound awakening within me, igniting a passion and determination to make a positive impact on the lives of others facing similar battles. Witnessing the aftermath of my neighbor's suicide was an emotional crucible that forced me to confront the harsh reality of mental health challenges. The stigma surrounding mental health issues became glaringly apparent as conversations hushed and judgmental whispers echoed through the neighborhood. In that moment, I realized that understanding and compassion were desperately needed to break the silence and provide support to those who were silently grappling with their own internal struggles. Motivated by a deep sense of empathy, I embarked on a personal journey of self-discovery and education, seeking to understand the intricacies of mental health and the complexities surrounding trauma. As I delved into psychology and counseling literature, I became increasingly aware of the pervasive impact of trauma on individuals and the urgent need for mental health professionals who could offer guidance, empathy, and healing. This awakening ultimately led me to pursue a career as a mental health counselor specializing in trauma. I dedicated myself to acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to become a compassionate advocate for those navigating the often treacherous waters of psychological pain. My academic pursuits were complemented by hands-on experiences, working in various mental health settings, and volunteering with organizations that focused on supporting individuals affected by trauma. In my role as a mental health counselor, I have had the privilege of working closely with trauma clients, helping them navigate their journey toward healing and resilience. Every day, I draw inspiration from my neighbor's tragic story, transforming the pain of loss into a driving force for positive change. I approach my work with an unwavering commitment to destigmatize mental health, foster understanding, and provide a safe space for individuals to share their stories. While I cannot change the past, I am determined to use my experiences and knowledge to contribute to a future where mental health is prioritized, and individuals facing trauma are met with empathy and support. Through my work, I hope to honor the memory of my neighbor by making a meaningful difference in the lives of others, one counseling session at a time.

In a world increasingly aware of the environmental challenges we face, I have committed myself to making conscious choices in my daily life to reduce my carbon footprint. Embracing a sustainable lifestyle involves a series of small changes that collectively contribute to a positive impact on our planet. From driving an electric vehicle to opting for reusable containers and practicing mindful transportation, these choices not only reflect my commitment to environmental stewardship but also serve as an example for the next generation. One significant step in my journey toward sustainability is driving an electric vehicle. This decision goes beyond mere transportation; it represents a commitment to reducing emissions and embracing cleaner, more sustainable energy options. Electric vehicles contribute to lower air pollution levels and represent a tangible way to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. It's a small change with a considerable environmental impact. The choice to use metal and glass containers for water and food storage is another deliberate effort to minimize single-use plastics. By opting for durable and reusable materials, I am not only reducing my own waste but also contributing to the broader goal of curbing plastic pollution. These small adjustments in daily habits showcase the transformative power of individual choices. Embracing reusable bags is a simple yet effective measure in reducing the environmental strain caused by disposable plastic bags. It's a habit that has become second nature, making a significant difference in the amount of plastic waste generated. Coupled with a commitment to mindful consumption, this choice aligns with the broader effort to mitigate the impact of plastic on our ecosystems. Carpooling my children to school is a practical approach to minimizing carbon emissions while also fostering a sense of community. It not only reduces the number of individual car trips but also allows for shared experiences, strengthening the bonds between children and their peers. Carpooling becomes a shared responsibility, promoting a collective effort toward sustainability. As a parent, instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in my children is a crucial aspect of my commitment to sustainability. By involving them in these practices, from sorting recyclables to discussing the benefits of electric vehicles, I aim to cultivate an awareness of their impact on the planet. Small actions today, such as using reusable containers and carpooling, are not just about personal choices but about influencing the habits of future generations. Passing on a love and respect for the environment to my children is an investment in the planet's future. I believe that by ingraining these sustainable practices into their daily lives, I am contributing to the creation of a generation that values and prioritizes environmental conservation. It's a ripple effect, where small changes today lead to a more sustainable and harmonious tomorrow. In essence, these small adjustments in my daily life reflect a commitment to a sustainable future. Whether it's driving an electric vehicle or using reusable containers, each choice is a step toward minimizing my ecological footprint. Through these practices, I not only contribute to environmental preservation but also play a part in shaping the values and habits of the next generation, ensuring a legacy of care and responsibility for our planet.

Embarking on a journey towards a Doctorate in Psychology is a significant decision that has required a thoughtful consideration of my personal and professional aspirations. As a mother of two young girls, I want to show them that reaching for your dreams is possible with a healthy support system and a leap of faith. As a refugee from Croatia, I believe meeting my academic and professional goals is my version of fulfilling the American dream.

Embarking on a journey towards a PhD is a significant decision that has required a thoughtful consideration of my personal and professional aspirations. As a mother of two young girls, I want to show them that reaching for your dreams is possible with a healthy support system and a leap of faith. My current clinical work centers around the trauma of modern motherhood, from infertility and loss to postpartum issues and beyond. A dissertation topic I am interested in is how different factors can influence success in pregnancy and postpartum, focusing on the mental health of mothers, with the hope of understanding past and educating future generations of mothers and the people who love and support them. My number one influence is Curt Thompson, his integration of medicine, neuroscience and faith has shaped my understanding of who and why we are the way that we are. Understanding how shame reshapes our brain and how healing from it changes it in different ways is something that I love to use to educate clients. Francine Shapiro, the founder of EMDR, has had the greatest influence on my clinical practice as I specialize in trauma. I haven't seen anything work as well as EMDR to treat trauma and her writings about how she developed the modality is fascinating. I also appreciate Gabor Mate and his work on stress and the body, as well as Henry Cloud and John Townsend and their many writings that integrate Christianity and mental health. I also worked under Dr. Paul Meier in a PHP and IOP setting for six years and his writing has been foundational as well.

I was first introduced to these characters through the books and so my view might be a bit skewed although I do feel that the series did a fine job in portraying the character of Conrad and Jeremiah. As a passionate advocate for Team Conrad, I find myself drawn to the complex and deeply human character of Conrad Fisher, whose journey resonates on profound emotional levels. Conrad, the brooding and introspective elder brother, navigates the tumultuous waves of love and family dynamics in a coming-of-age story that captures the essence of growth and transformation. My allegiance to Team Conrad is rooted in the nuanced portrayal of his character, which reflects the intricacies of the human experience. As an eldest sibling myself, I know I am obviously biased by his relatability. One of the compelling aspects of Conrad's character is his vulnerability. Han beautifully exposes his internal struggles, allowing readers to empathize with the challenges he faces. The layers of emotion that Conrad grapples with, particularly in the context of family dynamics and his evolving feelings for the protagonist, Belly, make him a relatable and authentic character. Furthermore, Conrad's journey is marked by personal growth and introspection. As the narrative unfolds, readers witness his evolution from a guarded and emotionally reserved young man to someone who confronts his fears and insecurities. This transformation not only adds depth to Conrad's character but also reinforces the novel's overarching theme of self-discovery. I love an emotional growth arc, especially in a genre where male love interests tend to be simple and one dimensional. Jeremiah, on the other hand, is often seen as more carefree and easygoing. While this can be endearing, I personally tend to prefer the complexity and emotional depth found in Conrad's character. Jeremiah's openness and straightforwardness make him more transparent which is nice but I do prefer the broody mysterious types. Being Team Conrad is an acknowledgment of the beauty found in flawed characters who undergo genuine growth. Conrad's journey is a testament to the human capacity for change and the transformative power of love and self-reflection. It's an affirmation that relationships are not static; they evolve, they challenge, and they ultimately contribute to the multifaceted tapestry of our lives. Is it any surprise, then, that in my middle school years I was staunchly Team Edward? It's important to note that preferences in fictional characters can vary widely, and there is no objective measure of one character being "better" than another. I may resonate more with Conrad's complexity, while others may prefer Jeremiah's light-hearted charm, but it's all in love.

It has contributed to the resurgence of interest in horror literature within younger readers. "Babel" by R.F. Kuang is a literary masterpiece that takes readers on a breathtaking journey through a world of magic, politics, and complex characters. The novel's rich world-building immerses readers in a vividly imagined setting, and the depth of political intrigue adds layers of complexity to the storyline. What sets "Babel" apart is Kuang's ability to create morally ambiguous characters that challenge conventional notions of heroism and villainy. The exploration of power, sacrifice, and the consequences of choices adds depth to the narrative, making it a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant experience. "Book Lovers" by Henry is a delightful and heartwarming celebration of the joy that books bring to our lives. In the wild world of entertainment, Zendaya stands out as a beacon of inspiration for individuals seeking to carve their own paths and break through traditional molds. Her multifaceted approach to her career serves as a compelling example, particularly for my two young daughters, encouraging them to embrace their diverse interests and pursue their passions with unwavering determination. What sets Zendaya apart is not just her acting prowess but her ability to seamlessly transition between various facets of the entertainment industry. From acting to singing, dancing, and making splashes in the fashion world, Zendaya has become a true inspiration, showcasing the limitless possibilities that await those willing to explore their talents and not settle for a role others have assigned to them. This sends a powerful message to young minds, encouraging them to explore their passions without the fear of being pigeonholed. Zendaya's dedication to authenticity is another aspect that makes her an exceptional role model. In an industry where external expectations often dictate one's choices, Zendaya has consistently remained true to herself. She uses her platform to advocate for inclusivity, challenging beauty standards and promoting self-expression. This promotes the importance of staying true to their values, even in the face of external pressures. As a mother of two young girls, I want to show them that reaching for your dreams is possible with a healthy support system and a leap of faith. As a refugee from Bosnia, I believe meeting my academic and professional goals is my version of fulfilling the American dream. It is hard to quantify who I am in a short four hundred word essay. I will list the things I believe have shaped me most in my life. Many of my family members were soldiers in the war that broke up former Yugoslavia. I witnessed, firsthand, the effects of untreated mental health disorders that developed from this civil war. I often wonder what my life would have been like and what my parents would have achieved if they weren't forced to fight for and then flee their country of birth as young adults. My focus in my practice is post traumatic stress disorder and maternal mental health, the integration of this being fertility and birth trauma. I have worked with hundreds of parents and parents to be who are struggling with infertility, loss, complicated medical stressors and comorbid mental health struggles that make this time of life less sparkly than it "should" be.

    James T. Godwin Memorial Scholarship
I have several family members in the military but my favorite has to be my baby brother. He is a warrant officer at Fort Rucker, training to be an army helicopter pilot. There are a lot of funny stories as he is a pretty funny guy, over six feet tall and skinny as a string bean. Being his older sister entailed suffering through a lot of pranks and fights over silly things like the TV remote. A moment that sticks out and is spoken about at many family gatherings is a time where my dad's side of the family got together to fish and hike at a local national park. This was a common summer activity but this time sometime in the summer of 2005 sticks out more than others. My brother, youngest cousin and jokester that he is, was playing with the bait minnows and, unbeknownst to us, planning a prank. With all of the adults distracted and kids focusing on catching a fish, my brother slipped minnows into my insulated water bottle. I will never forget the feeling of the minnows swimming around my mouth for the five seconds it took my brain to catch up to what my tongue was feeling. I remember spitting out minnows, water and who knows what else, into Lake Texoma. I don't think I swallowed a minnow but I can't say that with complete confidence. I remember feeling embarrassed and confused and looking over and seeing my little brother laughing and turning bright red. His eyes, full of laughter, convinced me to let it go. He was, and continues to be, a hard person to hold a grudge against. As I said, this memory is brought up often and has solidified to a warm smile on my face every time it is recalled. I love my brother and am so proud of him. He joined the Air Force ROTC at Baylor University, then took a break from school and enlisted. He was able to finish his undergraduate studies while enlisted as an Air Force Airman. He moved over to the army to fulfill his dream of being a pilot. Of course I worry about him, emotionally and physically, and selfishly wish that he could live next door and be available for every holiday or random weekend. That being said, I know he's fulfilling his purpose and building a life of meaning for himself.

My mother discussed the idea of having an abortion when she got pregnant with me at eighteen. And while I can imagine how terrified she must have been to experience this at such a young and pivotal age, I am forever grateful to her for choosing life. Without her making that decision, I would not be here and neither would my two beautiful daughters. As a mother, I have been in a place to make so many difficult choices but I will always be grateful for the opportunity to do so. I am a Christian Licensed Professional Counselor in the north Texas area. I specialize in trauma, specifically in the area of maternal mental health. While so much of motherhood can be difficult and stressful, I believe in every baby's right to life. (TX license number 8943). My own difficult postpartum journey is what led me to work with and advocate for mothers and those who wish to be mothers. My undergraduate and masters level training has been at two Christian schools, Baylor University and Dallas Baptist University. Each of these experiences has led to deeper knowledge of the Bible and a stronger relationship with the Lord. I plan to continue this Christian centered education as I have just been accepted to Liberty University's PhD in psychology program. As a counselor to women with many different types of trauma and struggles with fertility, postpartum and loss, I have seen first hand how precious life is at all stages, from the moment of conception to when our time is up. I believe that every child is a part of God's plan and deserves a chance to live the life he or she has been given. In my graduate work, I led an abortion recovery group, working with women from different backgrounds as they processed through the grief and trauma of making that decision. From this experience, I have learned that most people who choose to end their pregnancy do so out of fear or misinformation rather than a hateful or selfish place. I have so much grace for someone in this situation and believe that working with this population and helping them heal generational trauma will lead to more women making the choice give their child a chance at life. I believe that continued education and support to communities with great need, paired with the compassion and care of Jesus can lead more people to choose Life.
