I've heard about the various career opportunities through my three years in high school AVID, and I've come to a decision. One that was years in the making. A career in law enforcement, although risky, is something I want to experience in my life, among other things.
In an encounter with dangerous individuals that involved both weapons and a slashed tire, I felt scared for my life. Threats were made (by the aggressive party), and the police were called. When the police car rolled into the parking lot, that adrenaline and fear started to dissolve. I found myself feeling not fearful, but secure. Sure, the drama was still ongoing, and I was still at risk, along with my family, but the police were here. For the time being, we were safe.
During this counter, I witnessed how the very presence of police officers around makes a difference. It brought me a sense of comfort, knowing that I was protected. That is the comfort and security that I want to bring. That is the difference I hope to make. No matter the situation, whether that be domestic abuse, road rage, or a simple noise disturbance call, I want to be the one that people can count on when things go south, just as the police did for me that day.
Additionally, my time in AF JROTC, paired with the knowledge and skills I obtained through my graduation from the 2025 Cadet Officer Leadership Program (COLP) here in Prince George's County, has equipped me with the experience and exposure I needed to grow out of my shell. Through this, I learned to be a leader, a team player, and most importantly, a person who demonstrates integrity first, and has mutual respect with anyone I have to work with.
With my experience in the trades, which for me was flooring, I have come across both some of the best and worst living spaces I have ever seen. Despite that, I powered through and have come to realize that I am made for this. I can handle the uncomfortable and the nasty. The ugly side of life.
I chose this field because I am a person who does not back down, and will stand by those in need, because I want to bring a sense of peace and comfort to those going through dark moments. Those who are suffering. I hope to make a difference by doing what the police did to me that day. They allowed me to breathe, and so will I.
