Bio

I am a Master’s of Physician Assistant Studies candidate at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Health Professions, in their Class of 2026 cohort. Within my program, I serve as Class President, as I aim to provide and be a voice for my classmates and a liaison between the faculty. I am a Spring 2022 Graduate of Howard University’s Bachelor’s of Science, Clinical Laboratory Science program, with Summa Cum Laude Honors distinction. My interest in the healthcare field stems from the desire to reduce the maternal and feminine health disparities experienced by marginalized groups of women, along with working with the care and disparities faced by neonates and infants in the NICU- as I was a NICU patient myself. As an aspiring Physician Assistant, I hope to serve as a health advocate that prioritizes wellness and lending a voice to those silenced. Outside of my career aspirations, I am community servant. I enjoy showcasing my creativity through sketching, blog writing, digital media creation, as well as providing mentorship and resources for fellow Black women in higher education. As a result, I am a Co-Founder of a platform that focuses on empowering Black women in college and high school, called Cocoa Diaries!

Fortitude. Advocacy. Humility. Synergy. These are qualities that define an impactful Physician Assistant, and they are the values that guide me as a person and future provider. These values aren’t abstract as they are lived principles that shape how I learn, engage with patients, and hope to influence the communities I serve. Fortitude has carried me through seasons where the pursuit of becoming a PA has tested my academic ability, as well as my emotional and mental endurance. The rigor of PA school, and now the transition into clinical rotations, demands a level of presence, energy, and adaptability that can be difficult to sustain. There have been moments when managing expectations, fatigue, and my own mental health felt heavy. Yet, I continued to show up, sometimes struggling to seek support when needed, all while trying to give myself grace and trust that growth is often forged in discomfort. Fortitude, for me, is not about being unaffected by challenges; it’s the willingness to meet them and continue forward with resilience. This core mantra will allow me to care for patients with steadiness and empathy, even in moments of uncertainty. Advocacy is deeply rooted in my identity and lived experiences. As a Black woman in medicine, I have witnessed the very real disparities that shape patient outcomes, access, and trust, as I’ve been on the receiving end of the lack of advocacy by my providers. During my time working in hemodialysis, I cared for a patient who felt overlooked and dismissed in discussions about her pain management. I listened, validated her concerns, and collaborated with the care team to re-evaluate her treatment plan. In that moment, advocacy was not loud, but it was intentional, consistent, and rooted in compassion. Being an advocate means ensuring that a patient’s voice does not get lost in the noise surrounding them; creating space where dignity, equity, and autonomy are non-negotiable. Humility, particularly cultural humility, is essential in building meaningful patient relationships. As a provider, even now as a student, I care for individuals whose lived experiences differ from my own with the understanding that each patient is the expert of their own body, story, and needs. Practicing humility means remaining open, asking rather than assuming, and continually examining my own biases so that they never interfere with the care I provide. In today’s healthcare climate, there is still mistrust, trauma, and systemic inequities, but I always root myself in humility, not just as a value but as a responsibility. It allows advocacy, compassion, and clinical judgment to truly serve the patient. Synergy represents the interconnectedness of these values in practice. The PA profession is built on collaboration. Synergy is the recognition that care is most impactful when it is shared, intentional, and aligned with the patient’s wellbeing at the center. When I joined my PA cohort, I stepped into a community of learners who each bring different strengths, experiences, and perspectives. I have learned that leadership is not always about being at the forefront. It is about allowing others to step up and take the reins and supporting them through active listening and encouragement. The synergy of fortitude, advocacy, and humility strengthens how I show up as a human, a learner, and a future PA. I am becoming a Physician Assistant who not only treats conditions but also honors the humanity in my patients, and that, above all, is the impact I hope to make.

Fortitude. Advocacy. Optimism. Empathy. Synergy. These five words capture the essence of what I believe makes an impactful Physician Assistant, and they embody the core values I uphold in my personal life, and now my career. From my prior healthcare experiences to my current journey as a PA student, these attributes guide me in navigating challenges, serving patients, and contributing to the healthcare field. Fortitude is one of my founding "principles". It has provided me with the strength and courage to face adversity with determination and resilience. Through my matriculation of the didactic phase, of PA school, I look ahead to my future as an Advanced Practice Provider and recognize that this value of fortitude will be essential in overcoming the fear of failure and self-doubt that can arise from such a respected and demanding profession. Although the road to becoming a PA is rigorous, it is through fortitude that I can continue growing and developing the skills necessary to care for patients and the community. Just equally as important to me is advocacy. As a Black woman in medicine, I have witnessed firsthand the disparities that exist within our healthcare system, especially for marginalized communities. My goal and aim as a provider is to amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked, advocating for equitable and patient-centered care. I aim to be an agent of change in my role of healthcare, and the PA profession, ensuring that every patient has the opportunity to receive compassionate and quality care. It's not just about speaking up– it is about making tangible differences in those I serve, one patient at a time. Optimism plays a large role in how I approach patient care. Maintaining hope and confidence, even in the most difficult situations, is imperative for the patient and the provider. As a PA, encountering challenges comes with the territory, but how I approach and engage with these challenges, through optimism, drives my belief that positive patient outcomes are always possible! This mindset not only fuels my passion but also reassures patients that I am committed to working alongside them in their health journeys. Having empathy is a cornerstone of meaningful patient interactions. In my time working in hemodialysis, i learned the true value of empathy by connecting with patients on a deeper level. Seeing them multiple times a week, I came to understand that listening with intent- genuinely hearing their concerns- creates a bond that goes beyond clinical care. Through empathy, I have learned to approach each patient with humility, respecting their vulnerability and acknowledging the trust they place in me. Finally, synergy represents the collective power of these values coming together. When I accepted my seat in my PA cohort, I embraced. the opportunity to transform my own life to better serve others. Synergy, for me, is about recognizing that the sum of these individual qualities- fortitude, advocacy, optimism, empathy--creates a far greater impact than any one trait alone. This synergy fuels my passion for learning, leadership, patient care, and collaboration, all of which are vital in my journey to becoming an impactful Physician Assistant. My path to becoming a PA is about learning to better serve others and contribute to a healthcare system that is inclusive, compassionate, and patient-focused. With fortitude, advocacy, optimism, empathy, and synergy guiding me, I am committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of my patients and the communities I serve.
