Just like any foundation is important to a physical establishment, I have learned that the most important foundation to my identity is my Hispanic culture imparted to me by my mother. Even though no one sees the Conchas con café my mom and I relish every morning before heading out, it has given me a taste of my Hispanic culture, reminding me of my roots. I saw home as a place that would determine how much I would accomplish in life, confining me to the stigmas. However, my community reminds me of my artistic talents and the culture I represent. Through much searching, I encountered Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright used nature as the foundation of his architectural designs. Through his architectural piece Fallingwater I was inspired to create a body of work that focuses on various landscapes. Fallingwater is a rare site because Bear Run River runs through the home and exits as a waterfall. Wright’s use of the environment and form to evoke the presence of space demonstrates the composition's essence which influenced my incorporation of narrative into my landscape paintings. The stories told in my works are meant to capture the viewer's attention through the use of perspectives expressing my views of life. As a result of my interest in Architecture, I developed the aspiration to explore How can nature, an uncontrolled environment, bring harmony and comfort to the trials of daily life? Growing up in a Hispanic household, life was unstable. The constant arguments caused me to dissociate; I would find my eyes drifting outward towards the expansive horizon with cotton-like clouds atop the swaying trees, voluminous grass, and glistening lakes. In these moments, I was held in a powerful hypnosis where the encircling wilderness brought me peace and guidance. This inspired me to investigate my environment more deeply, reexamining its healing power in the midst of trauma. I express terrain quality through form and hue by implementing expressive brush strokes in overlooked sceneries. I strive to transform landscapes I routinely encounter into atmospheres that demonstrate the neutral and soothing abundance of nature. Wright has allowed me to discover the importance of land, therefore reminding me of my ancestors who cultivated land; thus my focus on nature is a way for me to connect to my roots. A huge part of my Hispanic Community works in construction. I want to continue helping Hispanic families by being a representative of my Hispanic roots. As an Architect, I will be able to offer my Hispanic Community a place to call beautiful. My passion for nature and my community will allow me to develop new layers to my artistic experience.
