Bio

My name is Deanna Parks. I am a Certified Nursing Assistant and Patient Care Technician, as well as a Nursing major at Radford University. I am very passionate about healthcare, particularly mental health. I believe mental health and physical health are very closely related, and I hope to advance my career as far as I can as a Psychiatric RN. I took many dual enrollment classes in high school via a community college, and therefore graduated high school with a GPA of 4.16 and 43 college credits, as well as my CNA certification. I have been a straight A student since I can remember. I am very ambitious both in school and my career, and I know that with my continued time, dedication, and hard work, I will achieve the future I’ve always dreamed of! Thank you so much for your time and consideration!

I have loved every step of my journey as a CNA, as well as the gifted adolescents I work with. Children have always meant a great deal to me, as well as many members of my family. Throughout the course of recent history, intellectual needs of gifted children have failed to be recognized. Having been someone of a gifted background, and always having straight A’s in school, I found myself being treated as an outcast. I found it to be harder to make friends, harder to fit in, and harder to feel like I belonged. These challenges led me to choose homeschooling over public school twice in my academic career. I know what challenges gifted children are faced with because I quite often went through them myself. I am currently pursuing a career in nursing, and it is my dream to be able to help children who, like me, feel they do not belong. Psychiatric nursing is my passion; unfortunately, children with gifted backgrounds often cross paths with this type of setting. This could be due to anxiety and depression caused by being misunderstood by both peers and adults in their lives. At the age of 18, being a CNA student, I was hired on the adolescent unit in a psychiatric facility. I learned so much about how to better help gifted children, who have different needs than their peers. I learned how to help keep them consistently stimulated in a therapeutic environment in order to help them grow, as well as learn to face daily their challenges, all while keeping them safe. In addition, I would encourage them to interact with peers and staff, giving them helpful skills to improve their social well-being both in the unit and at home. The adolescent patients made me fall in love with my job, and I found myself excited to come to work and help them out as much as I could every day. These children helped me every step of the way in return. Keeping them in mind helped me get through the most difficult milestones of obtaining my CNA certification, and they helped cement my career choice as a nurse, all so I could hope to help them even more after I receive my degree. In conclusion, I have done everything I can to help gifted children in their endeavors, both as a CNA as well as a nursing student and future nurse. When I get my degree, I intend to help every gifted child I meet. As a Registered Nurse, I will continue to work in pediatric and adolescent psychiatric facilities, and support the growth, achievement, and overall well-being of gifted children.
