Growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I learned early that dreams don’t come easy especially when you’re raised by a single mother in a low-income household. My mom carried the weight of two parents on her shoulders, working long hours and making endless sacrifices just to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. But beyond the material things, what she really gave me was vision one that stretched far beyond the limits of our neighborhood. She knew the streets could chew up a young Black boy and spit him out before he even had a chance. And so, she fought to keep me out of that cycle, out of the chaos that claimed too many lives around us.
She poured into me the belief that education wasn’t just a path it was my way out. My way up. That’s why going to college isn’t just important to me it’s everything. I’m not here just to earn a degree. I’m here to rewrite the narrative for my family. I’m a first-generation college student at Prairie View A&M University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Architecture. I chose this path not only because I have a passion for building and solving complex problems, but because I want to build something lasting, a future where my kids won’t have to wonder how they’ll make it out, because I already paved the way. I want my college experience to stretch me mentally, professionally, and personally. I want to take what I learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world challenges, especially in communities like mine that are often overlooked. I want to grow as a leader, work with people from all walks of life, and gain the skills that will one day allow me to lead projects that make a difference whether that’s creating sustainable housing or designing infrastructure that helps people live better.
But more than that, I want to show my family, especially my younger siblings and cousins that success isn’t just for other people. It’s for us too. I want them to see that coming from humble beginnings doesn’t mean your dreams have to stay small.
My goal is to graduate not just for me, but for every generation before me that didn’t have the chance. I’m committed to honoring the sacrifices my mother made and the faith she placed in me. Because of her, I’m not another statistic. I’m a student, a future engineer, and most importantly, a young man on a mission to turn struggle into strength, and faith into a future.
