My parents went through many hardships and adversity, much of which I haven’t faced. I find it very difficult to understand what my parents went through but trying to practice empathy has allowed to me view things from their perspective. My parents came from India in the 1980s at a very young age with very minimal resources in search of more job and education opportunities. They hoped to find new ways of growth and to get away from a world of restrictions, both economic and academic.
Years later, after knowing this, it made me find more of a interest or realization that I can’t settle for less and I have to work hard to achieve more in life. Even if I don’t think I can make it, I will now have the mindset of trying harder in life, thanks to my parents. Having his type of knowledge is beneficial to me because I know that in life it is not easy to live a stable life.
When I was young, I would try not to think about the future and my parents would push me to work hard but it meant nothing to me. However, in the past few years they taught me what the value of hardwork is and it has ever since benefited my mindset. My educational approach has been impacted greatly. For example, I am more willing to try harder in my academic life. I try to study for my tests and do extra work to help my grades increase. I even work at a hospital near my house to enhance experience prior to nursing school. I don’t try to do the bare minimum anymore like I have in the past. My interest in applying for college leveled up because I know my parents didn't get to choose what college they can go to and what they wanted as a major. They did whatever they can afford at the time and settled for less. Knowing that, it boosted my interest because I can now apply to my dream schools and go into majors that I am passionate about. Just because I am more fortunate than my mom and dad were back in the day, doesn't mean I shouldn’t try anymore. It makes me want to challenge and do more for myself and for them. Realizing that I can do anything in life if I work diligently sparked my view about how I view myself and the world and I am greatly appreciative for it.
I am extremely grateful for my family for continually pushing me to achieving my goals in life. While we haven’t had the absolute best in life, my family and I grow together to achieve what we can to live a happy and healthy life.
