Throughout my elementary and middle school experience, I constantly said I was bored in class. My classes were not stimulating, and my teachers were not very helpful in making my education the quality it should have been. For as long as I can remember, I was always saying that I wanted to be the teacher I never had.
This pursued through my sophomore year of high school. After tenth grade, I transferred high schools. At my new school, I had a really hard time fitting in, but I worked hard and did very well. This was thanks to my eleventh grade Jewish Philosophy teacher. His first priority was his students. He always worked hard to make sure everyone was excelling where they should. We spoke many times and he supported me and encouraged me to do well in and out of school. We got very close and would talk very often. I came to him with questions and he helped me find the answers for myself. That was one thing I love about him, he never spoon-fed me answers, he gave me the resources to help me find them myself.
Our relationship continued into my senior year. My high school was a religious school where most of the girls took a gap year in Israel after graduation. I, however, did not feel that this path was for me. I wanted to go to college. My teacher encouraged me to follow my dreams and do me even though my plans were not the same as most other girls in my school. He made me feel supported all the way. I would not be where I am now if not for him. I am so grateful for everything he did for me, and our relationship continues to this day.
Between my experience in elementary and middle school, and my experience getting close to my philosophy teacher, I realized that teaching is so important to me and to the greater community. A person's education makes who they are. If the teacher is not interested in the subject being taught, the students will not find the subject interesting. Some people might not be living to their full potential because of their education. I want to give those students a teacher who will listen, support, and help them live out their dreams. This scholarship will help me pursue my career goals and will help me live out my dream to be there for others.
