Bio

Hi, my name is Dilana Hathaway. I plan to attend Hartwick College for their Nursing Program this fall and graduate in May of 2028. My friends describe me as funny, friendly, and driven. I enjoy going to the gym, playing video games, reading, and listening to music. I am passionate about topics such as stopping sexual harassment and discrimination against women in the gaming community to things like talking about music. I have nearly completed my training as an EMT, which was a difficult accomplishment during my Senior year of high school but overall was one of my best experiences that helped me know I wanted to go into the medical field

When I was young, my mom went into septic shock. She almost died, and yet I couldn't do anything about it, just watch as days went by, watching as she got sicker and sicker until she got surgery; even then, she was left with problems she'd have to live with for the rest of her life. She's a miracle and lucky to be alive. As a kid, I could do nothing but watch, wait, and listen, but now, as I move into my schooling for nursing, I understand I have the opportunity to save lives, much like how the doctors and nurses who saved my mother's life did. I get to help the families, wives, husbands, sons, and young daughters like me who don't have the knowledge I do in getting the help they need to survive. Had those doctors and nurses not been able to help my mother, she wouldn't be here today. Instead, I wouldn't have had my mom to cry to when school stressed me out or throw millions of questions at when I got my first period. I wouldn't have had a mom to kiss me goodbye before I took the bus to school, and I wouldn't have had her applause from the audience when I grabbed my diploma at my high school graduation or danced at my last dance recital. Worst of all, she wouldn't see the future that was to come. Recently, my Grandfather was placed in the hospital when he had a cardiac emergency. Just thinking about the way my mother and aunt had reacted at that moment, how terrified they were to lose a loved one in that split instant, was only more of a reason for me to want to be a nurse. I want to be the person who helps the family understand what's happening and why we are doing everything we're doing. Not only placing the family at ease but my patient as well, being the best caregiving mentally as well as physically that I can be. I want to be a part of the equation. I began my journey with EMT training in my senior year of high school and fell in love with the medical field, which made me want to continue my education. So, I will now be moving on to the journey of becoming a nurse. If I can be the one to even make the slightest positive change in someone's life, I want to take the path that lands me in that position.
