At 25, after attending two different colleges, I realized I was still searching for a career that resonated with me. My journey began at Northern Idaho College, where I pursued business administration to meet my parents' expectations. However, I quickly realized this field didn’t align with my interests and passions, so I decided to step away and reassess my goals.
After working for a few years, I strongly desired to pursue a hands-on career that would allow me to engage in meaningful, fulfilling work. Carpentry became the field that excited me, leading me to enroll at Grays Harbor College. Unfortunately, the onset of the pandemic disrupted my studies, as the program required in-person participation. Faced with the option of taking unrelated courses at a significant financial cost, I decided to return to work until I could find a more stable path forward.
Eventually, I found my way to Perry Technical Institute, where I could fully dive back into carpentry. Despite the challenges of being a non-traditional student, my determination to succeed has grown stronger. As a single parent to two young boys, I constantly balance my studies with the responsibility of raising my children. These challenges are part of what makes me a non-traditional student, and they are what motivate me to push myself further every day.
What drives me to do more is the desire to create a better life for my children. I know that the education and skills I am gaining will provide long-term benefits not only for me but for my family. My ultimate goal is to model hard work, perseverance, and resilience for my sons, teaching them that no matter the obstacles we face, we can always pursue our dreams and make a positive impact on the world.
In my carpentry program at Perry Technical Institute, I am excelling, maintaining a 4.0 GPA halfway through my second quarter. However, the financial strain of tuition, personal protective equipment (PPE), and day-to-day living expenses is an ongoing challenge. Balancing these responsibilities while raising two children is demanding, but I am determined to overcome these obstacles and finish my program. I know that doing so will allow me to create a stable and prosperous future for my family, which is my greatest motivation.
Once I complete my program, my immediate goal is to enter the workforce as a carpenter and pursue my journeyman’s certification. My long-term aspiration is to start my own carpentry business, specializing in professional residential framing. I aim to lead a small team, delivering high-quality work and creating job opportunities for others. Additionally, I am interested in taking on supervisory or project management roles, which would allow me to further grow my leadership skills while helping others succeed in their careers.
As a non-traditional student, I understand the importance of hard work and pursuing a career that aligns with my passions. Every challenge I face is an opportunity to grow and learn. The sacrifices I make now are investments in a better future for myself and my children. I am committed to using my education not only to improve my own life but to set a positive example for my sons. Through perseverance and dedication, I am confident that I can achieve my goals and build a bright future for our family.
In conclusion, my journey as a non-traditional student is driven by my desire to create a better life for my children and to pursue a career that truly excites me.

Calvin C. Donelson Memorial Scholarship
Pursuing a trade in carpentry and construction has been a transformative journey for me, one that has led to profound personal growth and a newfound passion. My initial foray into higher education was in business management, a path chosen more for my parents’ expectations than for my own interests. While I learned valuable skills during that time, I quickly realized that my heart lay elsewhere. It was during a pivotal moment, when I helped my grandfather remodel his house, that I discovered my true calling.
The experience of working alongside my grandfather was not only enjoyable, but it also sparked a passion that I had never fully recognized before. The satisfaction of transforming ideas into tangible structures and the joy of creating something with my own hands were exhilarating. I found myself looking forward to each day spent measuring, cutting, and building, a stark contrast to the time I spent in the classroom, which felt increasingly stifling.
This realization prompted me to take a break from traditional schooling and redirect my efforts toward vocational training. Currently, I am enrolled in a vocational school, where I am honing my skills in carpentry and construction. A highlight of my training has been the opportunity to work on a duplex for a class assignment. Witnessing the plans come to life has reinforced my passion for this trade and my belief that I am on the right path.
I have learned that carpentry is not merely about construction; it is about creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. Each project is unique, presenting its own challenges and requiring innovative solutions. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial burdens of my education but would also be an affirmation of my decision to pursue a path that truly resonates with me. Next Chapter Scholarship
As a 25-year-old single father of two young boys, my journey has been both challenging and enlightening. Balancing fatherhood with my education at Perry Technical Institute has instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility—to my children and my community. As a low-income single father, I am applying for training benefits to support my education but have faced difficulties obtaining them, prompting me to petition for assistance. Currently enrolled in the Construction and Carpentry Technology program, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA while gaining hands-on skills to contribute to a thriving community of trade workers. My goal is to leverage my education to create affordable housing, provide job opportunities, and inspire future generations.
My passion for construction began long before I enrolled at Perry. I attended two other colleges in pursuit of different fields, but none resonated with me as deeply as carpentry. I discovered my love for building and creating tangible results. The sense of accomplishment from constructing a home—where families can create memories—fuels my determination to succeed.
At Perry Technical Institute, I have participated in a project that embodies my commitment to community service: building a duplex for low-income families with Habitat for Humanity. This experience has allowed me to apply my classroom learning in a real-world setting. Each day on the construction site, I witness how a well-built home can transform lives, reinforcing my desire to dedicate my career to affordable housing.
Coaching wrestling and fishing with my sons provide a welcome respite from my studies and emphasize community involvement. As a coach, I instill values of hard work, discipline, and teamwork in my boys and the young athletes I mentor. These lessons extend beyond the wrestling mat; they are foundational to any trade. Building a home, like building a team, requires collaboration, perseverance, and a shared vision. I aim to impart these values not just to my children but also to my future colleagues in the trades.
Upon completing my education, I aspire to achieve journeyman status and eventually open my own construction business. This dream extends beyond personal success; it’s about creating opportunities for others. I envision a company that constructs homes and serves as a training ground for aspiring tradespeople. By providing mentorship and hands-on experience, I hope to nurture a new generation of skilled workers dedicated to building a better future.
In today’s fast-paced world, the trades often lack recognition. I believe a hands-on approach to knowledge development is crucial, equipping individuals with practical skills while fostering pride in workmanship. As a trade worker, I will advocate for the value of skilled labor and highlight its essential role in society. By demonstrating the impact of our work—such as building homes for families—I hope to inspire others to pursue careers in the trades.
Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the support I have received. My experience as a single father has taught me resilience and resourcefulness—qualities essential in construction. Each challenge I face is an opportunity for growth, not just for me but for my children. I want to show them that hard work can lead to meaningful change in our lives and the lives of those around us.
Receiving this scholarship would alleviate financial burdens and allow me to invest more time in my education and community. With your support, I will strive for excellence in my studies and uplift those around me through my work in construction. Together, we can build a thriving community where everyone has access to safe, affordable housing.
Thank you for considering my application.
