Throughout my years in the schooling system, I was always bombarded with the question, “What do you want to do when you grow up?”. As a first generation Mexican-American with immigrant parents just trying to fit in, I dreamed of doing what other seven year olds deemed as being “cool” like becoming a professional athlete or an astronaut. As I got older, I reached the age where I realized I really had to think about a smart career path and make plans for my future. With the advice from teachers and mentors, I explored numerous careers such as engineering, architecture and business but I would always tend to gravitate towards the healthcare field because it seemed to be so impactful on people’s lives and as a result I chose nursing.
I believe having the consistent goal throughout my youth of leaving a lasting impact on the lives of others has guided me towards the nursing profession. In my pursuit of a field of study in college, I have a deeper understanding of the impact of being a nurse on your local community. Serving the people you live with and amongst and being able to provide services to improve their lives can be greatly rewarding and satisfying. Having the ability to one day connect and interact with so many diverse communities on Long Island and even beyond, especially through various language barriers, and as a tri-lingual student, I strive to find my role in society and put myself in the position to bring change, one step at a time.
Whether it be a few years from now, in scrubs at the local emergency room of a hospital saving lives or maybe even in a coach’s jacket on a misty soccer field fueling the sparks of the next generation of aspiring athletes, I will always carry the ambitious drive to bring positive change in anything I do just like my mentors have done for me. I will always strive to serve the needs of others and implement the same trust, respect, and accountability I was lucky to have been provided by my community and by my peers. I believe my ambitions and career plans are smart for me because they allow me to do what I enjoy doing while leaving a lasting impression. My ambition to bring change and positively impact my community gives me the opportunity to progressively learn and grow in the process while serving the community around me by being an example and not an exception and by living with grit and grace, achieving my goals, my own way.
