I used to spend my high school summers as a camp counselor for the children's summer program. The program wasn't very luxurious but they kids had toys to play with and activities to bond over. My first summer working there, a boy named Noah stood out to me. Quiet for his age and often huddled in a corner on his Nintendo DS, avoiding others. What stood out to me the most was Noah's short temper for people other than his family that did drop off and pick up. One day some older kids were trying to convince him to give them a turn with his game and Noah refused. They continued to prod him with whys and come ons when Noah finally snaps. He was infuriated with the boys and didn't hesitate to tell them as much. A lot of shouting later and we finally got them to separate, but I noticed that Noah didn't seem to be calming down at all. He picked at his fingernails and his chest heaving as he paced around. In that moment, I truly didn't understand that he was in an anxiety induced state, but I did the only thing I could think of. I asked if he would like to sit and breathe with me. Controlling my breathing always calmed me down after a scary movie or loud lighting strike so I thought to give it a try. We sat and just breathed together until he was calm enough to explain how he was feeling. In the end the boys apologized and even play together of their own volition. The next day during drop off, Noah's parent told me he was so happy that he had someone to listen to him rather than send him to a time out. This situation makes me think of the consequences children usually receive for "unruly" behavior. If I could change anything in education, it would be implementing more devices for students to voice their thoughts and concerns about the institution they attend. Children are a lot more preceptive than we'd think and it may improve comprehension skills if students had a platform to speak their truths. I also think its important for the students themselves to feel seen, not as another statistic in a classroom. The motivation that comes with being able to speak and think freely has been life changing for me, every student deserves to feel that way. My freshman year English teacher had the most impact in my life which encouraged me to pursue a career in education. She was a no nonsense educator and held us to realistic standards that gave us the push we needed to preform at our best. She would connect every lesson to a real world current event because she wanted us to be aware of the world we were living in. But she also never made us feel like there was this invisible wall that divided us from each other. She wasn't just my teacher and we weren't just her students. We were all a team that came together to learn academically but grow as people too. She was devoted and compassionate with her lessons that made learning something I looked forward to. I aspire to be an educator as impactful as her.

My first book I ever read was Percy Jackson: Lighting Thief. I had never had access to books before and my elementary school teacher thought it would be beneficial to introduce us to chapter books. I loved this story so much that I wanted to write my own. Have my own adventure. Create the hero to my own battles. Writing helped me feel like I was in control when the world was crumbling around me. I lost my job after the pandemic and had to deal with discriminatory behavior in school because of my race. But I decided to take hold of my life and I wrote a letter to my school principal. I wrote about the struggles I’d been subjected to and how I will no longer stand for these atrocities. I was able to spark the creation of my schools Black Student Union and help other black students who felt alone like me. Writing is all I’ve ever had to motivate me in life and I don’t plan to stop now!
