    As an English major at Florida International University, my passion for literature and language is matched only by my commitment to making a positive impact on my community. My academic journey has been enriched by my participation in the FIU Honors College, where I have had the privilege of engaging with thought-provoking coursework and enriching experiences that have broadened my perspective and deepened my understanding of the world. The interdisciplinary nature of the Honors College curriculum has allowed me to explore complex social issues through various lenses, fostering a holistic and empathetic approach to problem-solving. This environment has cultivated my critical thinking skills and inspired me to apply my knowledge beyond the classroom in meaningful ways. One of my primary focuses is on addressing educational inequity, a cause that is deeply personal to me. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education and the stark disparities that exist within our educational system. This awareness drove me to become an active member of the Student Support Services Executive Board, where I work diligently to provide resources and support to students from underrepresented backgrounds. In this role, I have spearheaded initiatives aimed at leveling the playing field, such as organizing workshops on college readiness, financial literacy, and mental health awareness. By collaborating with fellow board members and university staff, I strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where all students have the opportunity to thrive.     Having lived with an abusive stepfather for years, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of domestic violence and substance abuse on African American women and their families. This experience has profoundly shaped my commitment to using my higher education to improve care, coordination, and communication for those affected by these issues. Growing up in such a turbulent environment instilled in me a deep understanding of the emotional and psychological toll these circumstances can take on individuals, especially children. As a sophomore majoring in English at Florida International University (FIU), I am dedicated to becoming an educator who provides a safe and supportive environment for students facing similar challenges.     My first book I ever read was Percy Jackson: Lighting Thief. I had never had access to books before and my elementary school teacher thought it would be beneficial to introduce us to chapter books. I loved this story so much that I wanted to write my own. Have my own adventure. Create the hero to my own battles. Writing helped me feel like I was in control when the world was crumbling around me. I lost my job after the pandemic and had to deal with discriminatory behavior in school because of my race. But I decided to take hold of my life and I wrote a letter to my school principal. I wrote about the struggles I’d been subjected to and how I will no longer stand for these atrocities. I was able to spark the creation of my schools Black Student Union and help other black students who felt alone like me. Writing is all I’ve ever had to motivate me in life and I don’t plan to stop now!
