Bio

Welcome Friends! I am so thrilled to have you looking over my profile. I am a student at Appalachian State University with a passion for history and education. I am a Mexican-American first generation student that will teach the history that has been untaught. Within my experience in a public K-12th grade education I was not taught the other half of my identity, Mexican History. It is important for me to include all cultures and perspectives that produce success within the student’s life. My mission is to create a safe, engaging, active learning, and welcoming classroom. My life goals financial stability from all of my achievements as a first generation Latina college student, due to my upbringing filled with poverty. Later on, I plan to pursue my law degree to help my POC community that need that voice. My passions include an overwhelming urge to become a representative figure for my community, a highschool history teacher, and eventually a lawyer. As I continue to identify my identity Hispanic and neurodivergent. I learn to grow and spread awareness of mental health as a priority. I was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago;1 year into my undergraduate degree that poses challenges to my academia. Apart from this, I am dedicated to my degree that I work 20 hours a week as a waitress to support myself financially, this demonstrates my determination, thank you!

An example of my latest and most recent community service experience is that of my contribution for open house for my history department. My department was seeking students to represent and talk about the history department and sent some emails to a selected few. I felt so honored to be able to represent something I feel so strongly about, ultimately, something I consider to be a major accomplishment. Being able to give back to the academic institution that gave so much to me felt nothing less than an honor. History has always been important to me because I have wondered why interactions occur between different communities and attempt to understand what it means. Curiosity has led me to explore new things outside of my own community that have shaped my life in a positive manner. Many hands and influences contribute to the formation of a community. Community is relationships, but these relationships have multiple facets that complete it as a whole. My idea of community is one where a supportive, inclusive, brave, and safe environment are present. Growing up, I felt my identity take a big role in my definition and what community means to me as I am a Mexican American first generation student that can certainly attain to this, I would not be able to be where I am now without community. I decided that there is no better thing than this and I could not possibly let this wonderful thing slip through my fingers. Therefore, to me giving back to my community is putting in the effort to be a part of it through acts of service, the effort to become a better person that grows through mistakes and co exists with those around to build a strong community that will benefit from one another in the most gratuitous manner. Giving back is doing things that take time, take action, and take a risk to change someone's life. In conclusion, the importance of community can be analyzed and observed throughout human history, we would be nothing if not isolationists from one another, and ideas would not have been cultivated. Community has set many foundations that impact the way we live now. Community allows for one another to bring forth their most incredible abilities that can be of service to someone else. Community is the reason for despite studying history, I am choosing to be an educator. Community service has been important to me since I can remember, I volunteered at my church's thrift store, I have helped habitat for humanity, and participated in open houses just to name a few. I can assure that this moral obligation to give back and help those around us to be comfortable and overall happy is one that I will not lose, I feel too deeply, and I am passionate about community. I know that no matter how small the act, it can end up being the most impactful in various ways, therefore, I strive to constantly give back when I am given so much by simply having a community around me. With this opportunity that I will gladly, honorably, and graciously accept, I will be able to pay off some of my student loans. My family has been a big part of my life, the most important community of mine and it is important for me to find a way to become financially stable. I struggled financially growing up with my parents, living in poverty, and not being able to live a life in which I felt comfortable. Thank you for your time and consideration
    Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
The loss my nephews dad caused for me to fight to complete my education and fulfill my dream of giving back to the community to help those in need. For a long time I dealt with depression, therefore I fell into depression when his tragic death, murdered by his own father, knocked me down. I quickly got myself back up, I let myself recuperate for 2 weeks as I was deep into my Fall semester after suffering an accident in which I was hit by a truck on my first day of school walking to my yoga class. I grew up with my nephews dad, Daniel Cannon, and he made up a large part of my life, 10 years to be exact, and he gave me a precious gift, my nephew that continues to honor his dads memory. He is only a toddler, of 4 years old when it occurred, 6 months ago, 2 days before my birthday, October 22nd, 2023. Daniel was in school when he passed away, praised by his professors for his intelligence, something that I admired as I felt him to be wise. His death caused for me to focus on my dream and to honor the passion he had for academia, a passion I shared with him. He caused for me to finish my education to teach my nephew new things and inspire him to pursue his interests. I want to fight for the availability of aid to everyone around, whether it be in education or in delicate manners such as death. I strive to build a community in which there is safety, bravery, comfortability, and security that is available to everyone. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and know this opportunity will be accepted with gratitude and will be fully appreciated.

My career goals include becoming a successful lawyer. My career goals include earning my history major with an education credential which is something I want to work on before going into law school or during law school as a teacher assistant. I believe that the special skills that I am going to be taught within the education program would further enhance my abilities that will be used in the courtroom. In my career I want to develop and establish a firm of my own with talented and hardworking employees and provide the best leadership skills. Ultimately, I want to be my own boss of my own practice. I would face challenges which only improve my career as I gain new experiences to enrich my practice. As a lawyer I would advocate for justice. Justice, as seen in many cases, is not served. There are many things that go into considering the verdicts of many cases, but as someone who is willing to go to great lengths to bring the truth as well as justice to light. My career goals include the ability to defend myself and understand my rights to their fullest definition and extent. I aspire to be a top lawyer in my state. I want to develop into a prominent figure within my state with achievements of advocacy to improve my networking and connections. My career would include giving legal advice at a low or free charge to those facing financial difficulties as a form of giving back to the community. The path to achievement of the aforementioned goals, I want to get first hand experience from a early start such as internships at firms.

This memory induced warm yet butterfly in my stomach feelings. I open my dorm room and it felt like a new beginning. I was taking my first steps in the real world, following my career, and learning how to be independent. As overwhelmed as I felt, I was relieved to feel all of my hard work paying off. The possibilities felt endless when you have worked hard and will only continue to. The memory involved emotional feelings as well. My parents were incredibly proud to see their first child moving into a dorm room and working towards a bachelor degree.
Mental Health Movement x Picmonic Scholarship
My personal mental health struggles are biologically imprinted in me. My family on both sides, mom and dad, are prone to addiction. My uncle passed away due to alcoholism. I never got to meet my uncle due to the misfortune of his passing away. One of my uncle now is dealing with alcoholism and just got released from jail due to driving while intoxicated. It hurts to see the man who was my uncle be this person now who I don’t recognize. I always knew addiction was something I had in me, as well as other mental illnesses. From my experience, I want to advocate for helping people with alcoholism issues, without making them a villain. Personally, I never got diagnosed until this year. I have been going to therapy for one year, and on medication for a couple months. I have multiple mental illnesses that honestly debilitate me to a point where I don’t know who I am anymore. I have depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, bipolar, and ocd. When I was in 7th grade, I came into school crying because of an argument I had with my parents and my friend offered to take me to a counselor. While being in the counselors office, I revealed that I self harmed. I unfortunately did not stop the bad habit until I reached my junior year of Highschool. My junior year of Highschool ocd made me jump into my school work obsessively that I wouldn’t eat. I would be close to passing out during school time. My senior year, I ended up being reckless with my grades, which was extremely unusual for me. When college came around, I did well the first semester, but I ended up giving up on school due to my mental health. I failed classes for the first time, I got D’s and C’s on 3 classes. I’ve been using my Instagram to advocate for mental health, and to overcome the stereotypes. I lend a hand to others I know that are struggling with any type of mental illness by reaching out.
