Losing my grandparents within nine months was very hard for me. They were my support—giving me love, wisdom, and guidance. Their unexpected deaths made me feel lost and unsure about what to do next. During this time, I relied on my faith to find strength. When my grandmother died, I was very sad and confused. I didn't understand why something so bad happened. Just when I started to deal with her loss, my grandfather died too, making everything worse. These losses left me feeling alone and helpless. I found it hard to concentrate on my duties and started to pull away from people. I realized I could not handle this pain by myself. Turning to my faith, I started praying every day, looking for comfort and clarity. My prayers helped me share my feelings with God, lightening the emotional load I had been carrying. I found peace in certain scriptures, especially ones about strength and faith in God’s plan. Jeremiah 29:11—“For I know the plans I have for you”—reminded me that even in tough times, God was there for me. I also reached out to my church community, which was crucial for my healing. Other members offered support and shared their own stories of loss, showing me I was not alone. Joining Bible study and Sunday services helped me feel connected and hopeful. The faith of the community encouraged me to believe that I could find meaning and strength in my grief. A significant moment occurred when I chose to honor my grandparents by baking. They always motivated me to chase my dreams and help others, so I used my baking business, DK’s Sweets & Treats, to channel my grief into something valuable. I started donating part of my profits to local causes and held baking workshops for young people in my area. These efforts reminded me of the values my grandparents taught me—kindness, perseverance, and giving back. From this experience, my faith taught me important lessons. I learned that grief is something to navigate with patience, not just overcome. Faith provided me the strength to face each day and helped me see that pain can lead to growth and purpose. I realized the importance of relying on others—my church family, friends, and God—when life feels heavy. These relationships highlighted the strength of community and prayer. Now, I carry my grandparents' memory and the lessons learned from relying on my faith during tough times. Their love and guidance, along with the strength I found in God, motivate me to live a purposeful and resilient life. This experience strengthened my faith and showed me that with God’s help, I can tackle any challenge life throws at me.

The sudden deaths of my grandparents, just nine months apart, were devastating events that profoundly impacted my mental health. They had been central figures in my life, offering unconditional love, wisdom, and stability. Losing them so quickly and unexpectedly left me feeling lost, overwhelmed, and emotionally unanchored. I experienced grief in a way I had never imagined—waves of sadness, anxiety, and even guilt for not being able to do more or say goodbye properly. The intensity of these emotions began to affect other aspects of my life, including my schoolwork, relationships, and overall well-being. At first, I struggled to acknowledge the depth of my pain. I tried to move forward by immersing myself in tasks, thinking that staying busy would keep the emotions at bay. However, this avoidance only made things worse. I found myself snapping at loved ones, unable to focus, and feeling isolated. It became clear that I couldn’t heal without confronting the grief head-on. The turning point came when I decided to seek help. I began opening up to close family members and friends, sharing my feelings instead of bottling them up. Their support reminded me that I wasn’t alone, and they encouraged me to consider professional help. I started attending counseling sessions where I learned strategies for processing my grief. One technique that resonated with me was journaling—writing about my feelings, memories of my grandparents, and the lessons they had taught me. This practice helped me honor their legacy while making sense of my emotions. In addition, I leaned into my passion for baking as a therapeutic outlet. I channeled my grief into DK’s Sweets & Treats, the baking business I had started in high school. Creating new recipes and sharing my baked goods with others brought moments of joy and a sense of purpose. My grandparents had always encouraged me to follow my dreams and give back to the community, so dedicating my work to them felt like a meaningful way to honor their memory. Through these experiences, I learned several important lessons. First, I realized the importance of seeking help and being vulnerable. Opening up about my struggles not only helped me heal but also strengthened my relationships with those around me. Second, I discovered that grief is not something to "get over" but something to navigate. By finding healthy ways to cope, like counseling and creative expression, I was able to move forward while keeping my grandparents’ memory alive. Lastly, I learned the value of resilience and turning pain into purpose. Losing my grandparents taught me to appreciate life’s fleeting moments and to prioritize meaningful connections with others. It also fueled my desire to help others facing challenges, whether by supporting friends in similar situations or mentoring young people in my community. Today, I continue to carry the lessons my grandparents imparted and the strength I gained through this journey. While their loss will always be a part of me, I’ve learned to embrace the love and values they left behind as a source of inspiration and hope.
    A Security Insurance Agency Scholarship
The ongoing insurance crisis in states like Florida, California, and Texas requires a multi-faceted solution that balances the needs of homeowners, insurance companies, and state governments. Disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and fires are increasing in frequency and severity due to climate change, creating challenges that the current insurance model cannot sustainably address. To solve this issue, I suggest implementing a collaborative approach involving risk mitigation efforts, government-backed reinsurance programs, and incentives for both insurers and homeowners to adopt more resilient practices. One fundamental step in addressing the insurance crisis is to reduce the overall risk of disasters for homeowners and insurance providers. States should invest in infrastructure and community planning that lessens the damage caused by natural disasters. For example, introducing stricter building codes that require disaster-resistant materials, creating buffer zones in fire-prone areas, and improving flood management systems can significantly reduce losses. Homeowners can also be incentivized to retrofit their properties with resilient features like hurricane shutters, fire-resistant materials, and elevated structures in flood zones through tax breaks or grants. By lowering the risk of catastrophic losses, insurance companies will face fewer payouts, which could stabilize or even reduce premiums for policyholders. A state or federal government-backed reinsurance program could help absorb the financial burden faced by private insurance companies after large-scale disasters. These programs would function as a safety net for insurers, allowing them to share the risks of catastrophic events with the government. In return, participating insurers could agree to cap premium increases for homeowners, ensuring that coverage remains affordable, particularly for vulnerable groups like retirees and single parents. By creating this public-private partnership, states can prevent insurers from exiting high-risk markets while protecting consumers from excessive costs. Insurance companies need to innovate and develop policies that address specific regional risks without making coverage unaffordable. For instance, insurers can offer modular or tiered policies that allow homeowners to customize their coverage based on their budget and risk tolerance. Additionally, companies can leverage data analytics and artificial intelligence to better assess risks at a granular level, which can lead to more accurate pricing and targeted coverage. Insurance agencies play a critical role in bridging the gap between homeowners and insurers. Agencies should focus on educating homeowners about risk management and available resources, such as disaster-preparedness programs and resilience grants. Agencies can also advocate for their clients by working with insurance companies to create flexible payment plans and affordable options tailored to individual needs. Moreover, agencies can act as a voice for homeowners in discussions with policymakers, pushing for reforms that benefit all stakeholders. Policymakers must prioritize climate change adaptation measures to reduce long-term risks and encourage insurance market stability. Public campaigns should raise awareness about the importance of proactive disaster preparedness and resilience-building efforts. Additionally, governments can establish special funds to assist low-income families with insurance premiums or provide subsidies for disaster-proof home improvements. The success of these initiatives can be measured by tracking reductions in uninsured households, decreases in disaster-related losses, and improved retention rates of insurance companies in high-risk states. Lower premium increases and expanded availability of coverage will indicate a balanced and sustainable insurance market. In conclusion, solving the insurance crisis requires collaboration between homeowners, insurers, agencies, and governments. By investing in resilience, sharing risks through reinsurance programs, and fostering innovation in insurance offerings, states can create a more equitable and sustainable system that benefits all stakeholders.

Making my community and the world better is important to me, driving my current work and future goals. With a passion for entrepreneurship and community engagement, I aim to create opportunities, foster connections, and inspire positive changes. As the owner of DK’s Sweets & Treats, my small baking business is not just for selling; it's a way to help others. I plan to continue and grow these efforts after college by using my education, entrepreneurial mindset, and commitment to social impact. Right now, I improve my community by creating initiatives that offer opportunities and build connections. One example is the baking workshops for youth through my business. These workshops teach not only cooking but also creativity, confidence, and teamwork among participants. For many, it is a chance to try something new and recognize their potential. Additionally, I give part of my profits to local charities to address hunger and education issues in my area. These experiences show me the value of using my passion for a larger purpose, demonstrating that small actions can lead to meaningful impact. After college, I plan to expand my efforts more broadly. I aim to grow DK’s Sweets & Treats into a business that values social responsibility and community support. For instance, I want to adopt environmentally friendly practices in production and packaging, cutting waste and encouraging others to focus on sustainability. I also plan to set up a scholarship fund for underserved youth aspiring to be entrepreneurs or pursue culinary careers, ensuring financial difficulties do not hinder their goals. Beyond my business, I want to empower communities through mentorship and advocacy. With the skills and knowledge from college, I aim to create programs teaching financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and leadership, focusing on young people in underserved areas. I believe education and resources are essential for breaking poverty and inequality cycles, and I am dedicated to making these resources available to more individuals. My vision goes beyond my local community. I want to tackle global issues like food insecurity and access to clean water by working with organizations focused on sustainable solutions. By collaborating with other businesses and nonprofits, I hope to use my entrepreneurial experience to drive larger efforts for systemic change. The values and skills I am developing—creativity, resilience, and a dedication to service—will help me as I pursue these goals. I believe in the power of small actions and am determined to create sustainable solutions that inspire further efforts. College will provide me with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to make these dreams come true. Ultimately, I want to leave a positive legacy in my community and beyond. By using my passion, education, and experiences, I hope to make a world where opportunities are available, resources are sustainable, and individuals can achieve their full potential. I believe that even small changes can inspire a ripple effect, encouraging others to help build a brighter, fairer future for everyone.

Growing up in a single-parent home taught me a lot about being tough, taking responsibility, and working hard. Seeing my mom manage many tasks to support us pushed me to tackle challenges directly and build a good work ethic. Our financial struggles required me to be clever, and I learned to manage my time and resources well. This situation has strengthened my determination to do well in school and work, knowing that my successes can help lighten my family’s load and motivate others in similar situations. I want to use what I've learned in life to help my community by opening doors for those who feel stuck because of their situations. I plan to have a career in social entrepreneurship, which focuses on the economic issues that affect underserved areas. With my business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats, I’ve started to contribute by donating part of my profits to local charities and running baking classes for young people. Even this small action has shown me how significant even little efforts can be, deepening my commitment to making a social impact. As I pursue my goals, I am dedicated to my education and taking on leadership roles to develop the skills I need to lead well. By blending my background, education, and ambition, I am set on transforming my experiences into ways that uplift others, creating a cycle of positive change.

The moment I handed my first batch of baked goods to a customer, I felt the spark of possibility. What began as a passion for baking quickly transformed into something more—a desire to make a tangible difference. That first transaction represented more than just a sale; it was the beginning of my journey to combine my love for entrepreneurship with a mission to give back to my community. Growing up in a single-parent household, I learned the importance of hard work and resilience at a young age. My mother’s perseverance in the face of challenges instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and the belief that I, too, could create something meaningful. Inspired by her strength, I launched my small business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats. Initially, it was a way to explore my love for baking, but it quickly became a vehicle for something larger. With every sale, I began to set aside a portion of my profits to donate to local charities and community organizations. Witnessing how even a modest contribution could create a ripple effect reinforced my commitment to using business as a tool for positive change. As I move forward in my academic and professional journey, my goal is to blend entrepreneurship with political science to drive social impact. Political science intrigues me because it provides insight into the systems and policies that shape societies and influence access to resources. Through studying political science, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of government and the ways in which policy can be a force for equity and social good. My ultimate vision is to advocate for small businesses and to champion policies that provide support to underserved communities. One issue I am particularly passionate about is economic inequality. I’ve witnessed firsthand how limited access to resources can hinder potential, and I believe that businesses, especially small ones, have a role to play in addressing this issue. Through my political science studies, I hope to develop strategies that enable small businesses to thrive and drive economic empowerment in their communities. My business experience has shown me that success is about more than profits—it’s about creating opportunities for others. In the future, I envision launching a social enterprise that combines my entrepreneurial spirit with a commitment to community. I hope to create programs that offer mentorship, resources, and training for young entrepreneurs, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Through this work, I aim to provide aspiring business owners with the tools they need to succeed, much like I was able to build my business from the ground up. Additionally, with a foundation in political science, I aim to advocate for policies that create an environment in which small businesses can flourish, addressing structural challenges and fostering economic mobility. In every step I take, I’m motivated by the belief that business and policy can be powerful allies in creating social impact. My story may have started with a small baking business, but my vision is much larger. I hope to create a future where opportunity is accessible to all, where small businesses are celebrated for their contributions, and where young people are empowered to turn their dreams into reality. Through my education and future career, I am committed to making a lasting, positive impact on the world.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My interest in political science and business stems from a combination of personal experience and a desire to create meaningful change in the world. Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that come with economic hardship and navigating societal structures that often feel stacked against you. These experiences sparked my curiosity about how policies and laws impact individuals’ opportunities and livelihoods, especially those from underserved communities. At the same time, starting and running my small baking business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats, taught me the power of entrepreneurship as a tool for both personal growth and community impact. I remember one specific instance that solidified my passion for both fields. During my sophomore year, my business hosted a charity bake sale to raise funds for a local nonprofit supporting low-income families. Through this event, I witnessed how a small entrepreneurial effort could create real change in people’s lives. But I also saw the barriers these families faced due to policies that limited access to resources like affordable housing and education. This dual experience opened my eyes to the intersection of business and politics, where entrepreneurship can drive change, but political frameworks must support those efforts. I’ve chosen political science because I believe that understanding how government systems work is essential to creating the changes I want to see in economic policies. Policies around education, healthcare, and small business development all affect how communities thrive or struggle. By studying political science, I aim to gain the knowledge needed to advocate for policies that empower underserved communities and support equitable economic growth. At the same time, business is central to my goals because I believe in the power of entrepreneurship to uplift individuals and communities. Running Dk’s Sweets & Treats has given me hands-on experience in management, marketing, and financial planning, but it’s also shown me the potential for businesses to serve as a force for good. I want to expand my knowledge of business practices and social entrepreneurship to create ventures that are not only profitable but also socially responsible and impactful. In the future, I hope to combine my knowledge of political science and business to become an advocate for policies that promote economic opportunity and justice. My goal is to create businesses that give back to their communities while also working at a policy level to ensure that these businesses, and the people they serve, have the support they need to thrive. Ultimately, I want to use my education and experiences to make a positive, lasting impact on both the individual and systemic levels.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
The musical Wicked holds a special place in my heart for its unforgettable characters, its deeply resonant themes of friendship and identity, and its iconic music. The first time I saw Wicked, I was struck by how much I related to its characters, particularly Elphaba. Her journey of self-discovery, overcoming adversity, and finding strength in her differences resonated with me on a personal level. Wicked taught me the importance of embracing who I am, even when the world may not understand or accept me. One of the most powerful themes in Wicked is the idea that identity is fluid and often misunderstood. Elphaba, who is unfairly judged for her appearance and misunderstood by society, refuses to conform to the expectations placed upon her. Her strength and determination inspire me to embrace my own uniqueness and not shy away from the things that make me different. Elphaba’s struggle reminds me that the path to self-acceptance is often challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. In a world that often pressures individuals to conform, Wicked serves as a reminder to stay true to oneself. The theme of friendship also resonates deeply with me. The relationship between Elphaba and Glinda is complex and beautiful, showcasing the ups and downs of true friendship. Their bond is tested by misunderstandings, differences in beliefs, and external pressures, but ultimately, they learn that their connection is stronger than any disagreement. The song “For Good” perfectly captures this idea, as they reflect on how their friendship has shaped who they are. This theme reminds me of the importance of surrounding myself with people who challenge me, support me, and help me grow. It has also inspired me to appreciate the friendships I have, even when they face challenges. The music of Wicked is another aspect of the show that makes it so special to me. Songs like “Defying Gravity” and “For Good” are not just catchy show tunes; they carry deep emotional weight and serve as anthems of empowerment and self-discovery. “Defying Gravity” in particular has had a profound impact on me. Its message of rising above adversity and breaking free from limitations speaks to me on a personal level. Whenever I am facing a challenge or feel overwhelmed, I listen to this song and am reminded that I have the strength to rise above whatever is holding me back. The music of Wicked has become a source of comfort and inspiration in my life, giving me the motivation to push through difficult times. In my own life, Wicked has inspired me to embrace my uniqueness, value my friendships, and rise above the challenges I face. The show’s messages of self-acceptance, friendship, and empowerment have had a lasting impact on me, helping me navigate the complexities of growing up and finding my place in the world. Wicked is more than just a musical; it is a reminder that we all have the power to defy the odds, embrace who we are, and make a difference in the lives of others.
    Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
Scrolling through #BookTok for the first time felt like entering a bookstore filled with friends who knew exactly what I needed to read. With every post, I was introduced to new worlds, unforgettable characters, and books that spoke to people just like me. My ideal bookshelf, inspired by these recommendations, is a collection of stories that have resonated deeply within the #BookTok community—books that aren’t just read, but felt. At the top of my shelf would be The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, a book that swept through #BookTok with its poignant exploration of love, loss, and fate. Readers everywhere were moved to tears by the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus, and I was no exception. This retelling of Greek mythology humanizes legendary characters in a way that makes their struggles feel intensely personal. The emotional impact of The Song of Achilles is what makes it a must-have on any #BookTok-inspired shelf. It taught me that even in stories about gods and warriors, the most powerful force is love—and that resonates with readers universally. Next, I would include The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, another favorite on #BookTok. The allure of this book lies in its intriguing premise: the life of a fictional, glamorous Hollywood actress who reveals her true love story in a way that challenges norms and expectations. It’s not just the shocking twists that captivate readers but also the way it addresses themes of identity, ambition, and authenticity. This novel has encouraged discussions about representation and the complexity of personal identity, and it’s impacted the #BookTok community by prompting readers to reflect on their own definitions of love and success. For me, Evelyn Hugo’s story represents the struggle of balancing personal desires with public expectations, a theme that resonates with anyone trying to navigate the world. I would also add A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas to my bookshelf. This series has become a #BookTok sensation, known for its addictive blend of romance, fantasy, and high-stakes adventure. Readers were drawn to the world Maas created, filled with magical courts, complex characters, and intense relationships. Beyond the fantasy elements, the series delves into healing, resilience, and the importance of self-worth. It’s a reminder that even in fantastical worlds, the journey to discovering one’s value and strength is universal. #BookTok readers, myself included, have found solace in these stories during times of uncertainty, and this series has sparked endless conversations and fan theories within the community. Another must-have is It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover, a book that’s had a profound impact on #BookTok due to its raw portrayal of difficult relationships and the courage it takes to break free from cycles of abuse. The novel, while heart-wrenching, has provided a platform for readers to discuss the realities of domestic violence and the importance of self-love. It’s not just a love story—it’s a narrative about personal growth and survival, and the bravery it takes to choose oneself. Lastly, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart would complete my shelf. This thriller captivated #BookTok with its shocking twist and the way it challenges readers to reconsider everything they think they know about the story. The novel’s impact comes from its exploration of family, privilege, and memory, and its ability to leave readers stunned and eager to discuss the ending. We Were Liars has inspired countless re-reads, discussions, and fan theories, proving its lasting impact on the #BookTok community. Together, these titles represent the heart of #BookTok—a space where stories not only entertain but also inspire meaningful conversations and personal reflections.
    Andre' Burchelle Roach Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve been driven by a curiosity about the world and a desire to make a difference. Growing up in a family where education was valued but not always easily accessible, I learned early on the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing every opportunity. My parents worked hard to provide for me, instilling in me a sense of responsibility and a belief that education could be the key to unlocking my potential. This belief has fueled my passion for learning and my determination to pursue higher education, despite the financial challenges that have come my way. One defining moment in my life occurred during my junior year of high school when I had the opportunity to lead a community service project that provided tutoring and mentorship to underserved students in my neighborhood. This experience opened my eyes to the inequalities that exist in our education system, and it ignited a deep passion within me to advocate for educational equity. I realized then that I wanted to dedicate my life to creating opportunities for students like those I worked with—students who have the potential to achieve great things but who need the right resources and support to do so. Receiving this scholarship would be transformative for me, both personally and academically. It would allow me to focus more fully on my studies without the constant worry of financial strain. I am committed to pursuing a degree in political science and business, fields that I believe will equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to address systemic issues in education and policy. I want to explore how public policy and business strategies can be used to create sustainable solutions that bridge the gap in access to quality education for underserved communities. This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of college but would also give me the freedom to immerse myself in extracurricular opportunities, internships, and service projects that align with my long-term goals. I plan to join student organizations that focus on community service and educational reform, and I hope to intern with organizations that advocate for educational policy changes at the local or national level. Additionally, I am excited about the prospect of conducting research in these areas, working alongside professors and fellow students to explore innovative solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing our education system. Ultimately, this scholarship is more than just financial assistance to me—it’s an investment in my future and the future of the communities I hope to serve. It would enable me to fully engage in my academic journey and equip me with the tools I need to make a meaningful impact. I am committed to using my education to create positive change, and I believe that with the support of this scholarship, I can work toward a future where every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances. In conclusion, I plan to use this scholarship not only to further my studies but also to become a leader who advocates for educational equity and empowers others to reach their full potential.
    1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
If my 2023 had a soundtrack, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor's Version) would be on constant repeat, with “Clean” standing out as the song that has resonated with me most deeply. It’s been a year of growth, letting go, and discovering my inner strength, and no other song captures those themes quite like “Clean.” The lyric that speaks to me the most is, “When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe.” At the beginning of the year, I felt weighed down by a lot—stress from school, strained friendships, and my own personal expectations. It was like I was drowning in my own thoughts, unsure of how to move forward or where to even begin. I spent a lot of time trying to balance everything, trying to maintain control over situations that felt out of my hands. It wasn’t until I took a step back and allowed myself to let go—of toxic relationships, of self-doubt, of the pressure to be perfect—that I began to feel lighter, freer. In letting go, I realized I didn’t have to carry everything alone, and that sometimes, the best way to move forward is to release what’s holding you back. The line “The water filled my lungs, I screamed so loud, but no one heard a thing” also hit close to home. There were moments this year where I felt like I was calling out for help but wasn’t being heard, either because I wasn’t communicating clearly or because I was afraid to be vulnerable. Like Taylor expresses in the song, those moments of feeling unheard were tough, but they also taught me the importance of finding my voice, of speaking up for myself, and of surrounding myself with people who truly listen and support me. Another song from 1989 (Taylor's Version) that has been part of my 2023 soundtrack is “Out of the Woods.” This year has felt like a journey through unknown territory, with ups and downs, challenges, and uncertainties. The lyric, “Are we out of the woods yet?” captures the anxiety of not knowing whether you’ve overcome a challenge or if another one is just around the corner. I’ve often found myself wondering whether I’ve made it through the toughest parts of this year, only to realize that life’s challenges are ongoing, but that doesn’t mean I’m not growing and moving forward. Every step, whether it’s in or out of the woods, is part of the process, and that’s something I’ve had to remind myself of throughout this year. But it’s not all about challenges and letting go. 1989 also celebrates freedom and joy, and “Shake It Off” has been my go-to anthem for embracing the lighter side of life in 2023. The song’s upbeat energy and lyrics like, “Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate,” remind me not to take things too seriously, especially when it comes to the opinions of others. This year, I’ve learned to shake off negativity and focus on the things that truly make me happy, whether it’s spending time with friends, pursuing my passions, or simply enjoying the moment. In conclusion, 1989 (Taylor's Version) has been the perfect companion for my year. Whether it’s the reflective and healing energy of “Clean,” the uncertain yet hopeful journey in “Out of the Woods,” or the carefree vibe of “Shake It Off,” these songs have resonated with me on a deep level. They’ve helped me navigate the ups and downs of 2023, reminding me of the importance of letting go, embracing challenges, and finding joy in the process.

The first time I watched Simone Biles compete in the Olympics, I was absolutely mesmerized. I remember sitting in front of the television, holding my breath as she soared through the air, twisting and flipping in ways that seemed to defy the laws of physics. When she stuck the landing, a wave of pride and admiration rushed over me. From that moment on, Simone Biles became my favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA, and it’s not just because of her incredible athletic ability—it’s because of everything she represents. Simone’s dominance in gymnastics is undeniable. With seven Olympic medals and 25 World Championship medals, she’s widely considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. But what I find most inspiring about Simone is not just her success on the mat, but her resilience, mental strength, and advocacy for mental health. Simone embodies the kind of determination and courage that I admire deeply, and watching her compete has left a lasting impact on me, both as a sports fan and as an individual. I’ll never forget the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where Simone made the brave decision to prioritize her mental health over competing. In a world where athletes are often expected to push through pain and pressure, Simone’s decision was revolutionary. It reminded me that even the greatest athletes—those who seem almost superhuman—are human, too. Watching Simone step away from the competition, not because she couldn’t compete, but because she chose to take care of herself, was one of the most powerful moments in sports history. It taught me that strength isn’t just about physical ability; it’s about knowing your limits and having the courage to take care of yourself, even when the world is watching. Beyond her athletic prowess, Simone has been an outspoken advocate for survivors of abuse, using her platform to bring awareness to issues that go far beyond gymnastics. Her willingness to speak out and fight for change, even when it’s difficult, demonstrates her character and leadership. She is more than just a gymnast—she’s a role model who shows us all that it’s possible to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s uncomfortable. Cheering for Simone Biles means cheering for someone who embodies excellence, resilience, and integrity. Every time she steps onto the mat, I’m reminded of the countless hours of hard work, the obstacles she’s overcome, and the impact she’s making beyond the sport. Simone’s legacy isn’t just about medals and records; it’s about her courage to be vulnerable, her strength to fight for what she believes in, and her determination to inspire the next generation of athletes. Simone Biles has redefined what it means to be a champion. She’s shown the world that greatness isn’t just about being the best in your sport—it’s about being the best version of yourself. As I watch her continue to make history, I’ll always cheer for her, not just for her incredible talent, but for the values she represents. In Simone, I see a role model who has taught me, and so many others, the importance of perseverance, self-care, and using one’s voice for good. That’s why she’ll always be my favorite athlete on Team USA.
    Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
The first time I built a house in Minecraft, I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment I hadn’t expected from a video game. It wasn’t anything extravagant—just a simple wooden structure with a bed and some basic tools. But that house represented something more: my ability to create and shape a world entirely my own. It’s that freedom to build, design, and explore that resonates with me most deeply in Minecraft, and it’s why the game holds such a special place in my heart. My favorite aspect of Minecraft has always been its creative mode, where the only limit is your imagination. Growing up, I loved building with LEGOs and designing imaginary worlds, but there was always a limit to how much I could create with physical blocks. Minecraft changed that for me. Suddenly, I could build anything I wanted, without any boundaries. Whether it’s designing a sprawling castle, creating intricate redstone-powered contraptions, or landscaping vast mountains and forests, the creative possibilities are endless. One project that stands out to me is when I decided to recreate my childhood home in Minecraft. It was a personal challenge, not just because of the details, but because of what that house symbolized. It wasn’t just about replicating the physical structure; it was about capturing the memories and emotions tied to that place. Brick by brick, I meticulously placed each block, carefully arranging the rooms to reflect how I remembered them. It was almost therapeutic, a way of preserving a part of my past while embracing the limitless potential of Minecraft’s creative space. What resonates with me most deeply about Minecraft is how it fosters both creativity and problem-solving. In survival mode, for example, I’ve often found myself in challenging situations—whether it’s gathering resources to fend off mobs at night or trying to build a shelter before sundown. These moments push me to think critically and come up with creative solutions, but they also emphasize something even more important: resilience. Minecraft, in many ways, mirrors real life. There are obstacles, failures, and unexpected challenges, but there’s always a way to rebuild, regroup, and continue. Moreover, Minecraft has become a social experience for me. I’ve spent countless hours playing with friends, working together on ambitious builds, exploring new biomes, or battling it out in player-versus-player mini-games. The collaborative aspect of the game adds another layer of meaning to my experience, as it strengthens the bonds I have with others. Some of my favorite memories involve staying up late with friends, brainstorming ideas for our next big project, and laughing as we made mistakes or encountered surprises along the way. Those moments have helped me understand the value of teamwork, communication, and perseverance—skills that transcend the game itself. Minecraft is more than just a game to me; it’s a platform for creativity, learning, and self-expression. It has given me the space to not only explore my imagination but also to connect with friends and problem-solve in ways that challenge me to think outside the box. The ability to bring my ideas to life, no matter how grand or small, is incredibly rewarding. In a world where so much feels outside of our control, Minecraft offers a place where we can shape our surroundings and find joy in the process of building something meaningful. It’s this combination of creativity, resilience, and connection that keeps me coming back, and why the game continues to hold a special place in my heart.
    Bear Fan Scholarship
From the first episode of The Bear, I was captivated by the chaotic yet tender world of Carmy, Sydney, and their crew as they fought to turn a struggling restaurant into something extraordinary. The series felt so personal to me because, like Carmy, I’ve always believed in the power of food to bring people together and tell stories. For me, the perfect ending would focus not only on the success of The Beef, but also on the personal growth of each character, highlighting how their messy, beautiful lives come together to form a family. In my vision for the series finale, the restaurant finally achieves its potential—not as a high-end establishment, but as a neighborhood that honors its roots while embracing innovation. Carmy learns to balance his obsessive drive for perfection with the need for human connection. The final scene of the series would show Carmy in the kitchen, not lost in the meticulous preparation of dishes, but laughing alongside his team as they prepare for a busy night. His relationship with Sydney would have evolved into a true partnership, with mutual respect and understanding at the forefront. They would share a quiet moment where they reflect on how far they’ve come, with Carmy expressing his gratitude to Sydney for pushing him, and Sydney acknowledging that she couldn’t have done it without him. Sydney, in her own journey, would have grown not only as a chef but also as a leader. She’s found her voice and her place in the kitchen, no longer second-guessing herself or feeling overshadowed by Carmy’s reputation. By the series’ end, Sydney has earned the respect of everyone in the restaurant, and she’s already experimenting with ideas for her own future restaurant—one where she’ll be the visionary behind the menu. Meanwhile, Richie’s transformation would be the emotional core of the final season. Throughout the series, he’s struggled with feelings of inadequacy and loss, especially in the shadow of his cousin Mikey’s death. But by the finale, Richie has found peace. He’s now the heart and soul of the restaurant, working front-of-house and forming genuine connections with both the staff and customers. In one of the final scenes, Richie would be seen mentoring a young new hire, reminding us of how far he’s come, and that he, too, has something valuable to offer. Natalie, Carmy’s sister, would have stepped into a larger role within the restaurant, helping with the business side of things while juggling her personal life. She’s expecting her first child, and in a touching moment between siblings, Carmy assures her that he’ll be there for her in ways their family never was. This moment would symbolize how both Carmy and Natalie have learned to break the cycles of dysfunction they grew up with, offering each other the support and stability they never had. The perfect ending to The Bear wouldn’t be about everyone achieving perfect lives or flawless success. Instead, it would be about finding balance—between work and life, ambition and contentment. The final shot would be a simple one: the whole team sitting down to eat a family meal together after a long night, laughing, bickering, and sharing stories. It’s a moment that underscores the heart of the series—that despite the chaos, the disagreements, and the challenges, this group of people has found family in each other. This ending would be satisfying to me because it wouldn’t just wrap up the characters’ arcs neatly, but it would leave us with the feeling that, no matter what comes next, they’ll face it together—stronger, wiser, and with a deep sense of connection to one another.

    1) Indomitable Will – Thriving Through Challenges The attribute I embody most from the list is thriving with an indomitable will. My journey through high school, particularly balancing academics, extracurricular activities, and family responsibilities, has been a testament to my unwavering determination. Growing up in a family that has faced financial instability, I often had to juggle schoolwork with part-time jobs to contribute to our household income. Despite these challenges, I remained focused on excelling in my academics and leadership roles, driven by the belief that success is not defined by circumstances, but by resilience and perseverance. I recall a particularly challenging period during my junior year when I was taking advanced courses, leading my school’s DECA chapter, and keeping up with my baking business. There were days when I’d stay up until midnight studying, only to wake up at 5 a.m. to prepare for a competition or catch up on homework. The workload was overwhelming, and there were moments I felt like giving up. But deep down, I knew I couldn’t. I had a goal—to be the first in my family to attend college—and that fueled my determination to push through the exhaustion. What kept me going was my indomitable will, the refusal to accept defeat or allow setbacks to define my future. Every time I faced an obstacle, whether it was balancing a tight schedule or tackling a difficult assignment, I reminded myself why I was doing it—to create a better future for myself and my family. This mindset helped me thrive, even when the odds were against me. My hard work paid off when I earned a scholarship, a tangible reward for the perseverance I showed throughout high school. Beyond academics, this indomitable will has also shaped how I approach leadership. As President of DECA, I led our team through competitions where we faced setbacks, such as failing to qualify in certain events. Rather than seeing these as failures, I viewed them as opportunities for growth. We analyzed what went wrong, adapted our strategies, and returned stronger. Under my leadership, we eventually placed at the state level. Thriving with an indomitable will means not just surviving challenges but growing stronger because of them. It’s the belief that no matter how tough things get, there is always a way forward. This attribute has been central to my success so far, and I know it will continue to propel me through future challenges in college and beyond. 2) Dare to Take Calculated Risks – My Path to Improvement The attribute that represents my greatest area for improvement is daring to take calculated risks. I’ve always been someone who prefers to stay within the comfort zone of predictability, making decisions based on logic and past experiences. While this cautious approach has served me well in maintaining stability, I’ve realized that it often prevents me from embracing new opportunities and potential growth. One instance where this became clear to me was during my sophomore year when I had the chance to start my own club focusing on entrepreneurship and community service. I was passionate about the idea, but I hesitated, worrying about whether I could attract enough members, organize events, or balance the new responsibility with my other commitments. Ultimately, I didn’t move forward with the club, and looking back, I realize that this was a missed opportunity to expand my leadership skills and make a larger impact on my school community. My fear of failure and stepping into the unknown held me back from taking a risk that could have been both personally fulfilling and beneficial to others. To improve in this area, I’ve developed a plan to start embracing calculated risks by taking smaller, deliberate steps toward uncertainty. First, I plan to seek out opportunities in college that push me out of my comfort zone, such as joining new organizations or taking on leadership roles in unfamiliar areas. I will remind myself that growth comes from challenges, and even if the outcome isn’t what I expected, I will still learn something valuable from the experience. Second, I intend to practice decision-making under uncertainty by weighing potential risks and rewards more openly. Rather than fixating on what could go wrong, I will focus on the potential benefits of taking the leap. A key part of this is developing the mindset that failure isn’t something to be feared, but rather a step on the path to success. Finally, I plan to actively seek mentorship from individuals who embody the attribute of calculated risk-taking. By learning from their experiences and observing how they navigate uncertainty, I can build the confidence to take more significant risks myself. Whether through internships, entrepreneurial ventures, or leadership opportunities, I’m committed to embracing calculated risks that will help me grow personally and professionally.
Career Test for Future Lawyers Scholarship
The moment I realized I wanted to pursue a career in law came during a community meeting when I was just 16 years old. A local family was being evicted, and despite their best efforts, they didn’t understand their legal rights. Seeing their confusion and fear, I felt a deep sense of injustice. I remember thinking, “This shouldn’t happen—someone needs to help.” That’s when it clicked for me. I wanted to be that person—the one who could step in, clarify the legal system, and advocate for people who couldn’t do it for themselves. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to building a career in law with a focus on social justice and public interest law. My ultimate goal is to use my legal skills to advocate for underrepresented communities, ensuring that everyone—regardless of background—has access to legal support and fair treatment. To achieve this, I’ve mapped out a plan that involves education, experience, and a commitment to service. I have started by building a strong academic foundation in high school, enrolling in advanced courses like government and history to gain a deeper understanding of the legal system and how it has shaped society. Additionally, I’ve participated in debate and mock trial teams, where I’ve honed critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation skills—essential qualities for any future lawyer. These experiences have helped me not only to develop confidence in articulating my thoughts but also to understand the importance of structure and strategy in presenting a case. Furthermore, I’ve actively sought opportunities to immerse myself in legal work. Last summer, I interned at a local legal aid organization, assisting attorneys who work with low-income families facing housing and employment issues. This experience gave me a firsthand look at how legal services can impact people’s lives. I helped prepare case files, conducted research, and sat in on meetings with clients. It reinforced my desire to pursue public interest law, as I witnessed how often the legal system can be confusing and intimidating for those without adequate resources. This experience made me even more committed to advocating for vulnerable populations. As I move toward the next phase of my education, I plan to pursue a pre-law major in college, where I can continue developing the skills necessary for law school. I’m eager to take courses in constitutional law, civil rights, and ethics, which will broaden my understanding of the legal framework and how laws are shaped by societal values. I also plan to join student organizations like the pre-law society and volunteer with legal clinics, where I can continue gaining hands-on experience while learning from professionals in the field. In the long term, my goal is to attend law school and specialize in public interest law, focusing on housing rights, civil liberties, and access to justice. I envision using my skills to positively impact the lives of individuals and families, just like the one I saw struggling with eviction. I want to be a voice for those who are often ignored or overlooked in the legal system. Through advocacy, I hope to create systemic changes that lead to fairer treatment for all, especially those from underrepresented communities. In conclusion, my career path in law is driven by a strong sense of justice and the desire to help those who lack the resources to navigate the legal system. My experiences in debate, mock trial, and legal aid work have prepared me for this path, and I’m eager to continue building on these experiences. I’m committed to using my legal education to advocate for others, making a lasting impact in the field of public interest law.

The inspiration to continue my education stems from both my personal experiences and the desire to create a better future for myself and those around me. Education has always represented a path to growth, opportunity, and independence, and that belief was ingrained in me at an early age. But it wasn’t until a specific event in my life that I realized just how important education would be in shaping my future. I remember the moment vividly. It was my junior year of high school, and my family was going through a tough time financially. My parents worked long hours to make ends meet, and college seemed like a distant dream, something that may be out of reach. One night, I overheard my parents discussing the uncertainty of being able to afford college tuition. That conversation ignited a fire in me. I realized that education wasn’t just about getting a degree; it was the key to lifting myself and my family out of difficult circumstances. That night, I made a promise to myself that I would work harder than ever to ensure I could pursue higher education, no matter the challenges. I began looking for scholarships, signing up for extra classes, and seeking out mentors who could guide me along the way. My parents’ sacrifices became a constant source of motivation for me. I knew that if they were willing to work so hard for me, then I owed it to them—and myself—to keep pushing forward. As I approached graduation, I faced another challenge that made me question whether I could continue my education. Balancing my schoolwork with a part-time job to help my family became overwhelming, and there were times when I considered postponing college. But every time I felt like giving up, I thought about the opportunities that a college education could bring. I envisioned myself in a career that I was passionate about, contributing to society and creating a life where I didn’t have to worry about financial instability. That vision is what pushed me to keep going. It wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was about creating a better future for myself and setting an example for my peers. I wanted to show them that, despite the obstacles, education is achievable and that it opens doors to countless opportunities. Knowing that my pursuit of higher education could inspire them motivated me to persevere, even during the hardest times. Looking forward, my plans for the future involve continuing my education in a field that allows me to give back to my community. I am passionate about social justice and hope to study law or public policy. I believe that education is one of the most powerful tools we have to create positive change, and I want to use my knowledge to advocate for those who may not have a voice. My ultimate goal is to work in a career that allows me to combine my love for learning with my passion for helping others. In conclusion, my inspiration to continue my education is driven by personal experiences, my family’s sacrifices, and the belief that education can change lives. The challenges I’ve faced have only strengthened my resolve, and my plans for the future are centered around using my education to make a meaningful impact. I am committed to pushing forward, not just for myself but for my family and for the future I hope to create.
    Learner SAT Tutoring Scholarship
Preparing for the SAT has been both a challenge and a journey of self-discovery for me. Like many students, I initially viewed the test as a daunting hurdle, something that would significantly impact my future. However, as I’ve immersed myself in preparation, I’ve come to see it as an opportunity—not just to score well but to sharpen my skills, set clear goals, and gain confidence in my academic abilities. I remember the first time I took a practice SAT test. It was overwhelming. I hadn’t done much preparation, thinking that my regular schoolwork had prepared me enough. When I saw my scores, I felt a wave of disappointment. I quickly realized that this test required a different kind of focus and strategy. That was when I decided to approach SAT prep with a fresh mindset—one that prioritized learning from my mistakes, managing my time wisely, and maintaining a positive attitude. One of the first things I did was establish a study schedule. I’ve learned that consistency is key, so I’ve set aside specific times each day to focus on different sections of the SAT. For example, I dedicate Mondays and Wednesdays to practicing math, using online resources and textbooks to work through problem sets. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I tackle reading and writing, focusing on critical reading skills and grammar rules. I’ve found that breaking down the test into smaller, more manageable sections makes the process less overwhelming and helps me stay focused on my progress. To build my stamina and comfort with the test format, I’ve been taking full-length practice exams every couple of weeks. These timed sessions have helped me identify areas where I tend to struggle—whether it’s running out of time on certain sections or making careless errors when I rush. The practice tests also help me simulate the pressure of test day, allowing me to build confidence in my ability to manage time effectively and stay calm under pressure. In addition to the academic preparation, I’ve been working on improving my test-taking mindset. Early on, I realized that anxiety was a major factor holding me back from performing my best. I’ve started incorporating mindfulness exercises, like deep breathing and visualization, into my routine. Before each practice test, I take a few minutes to clear my mind and focus on staying present during the exam. This shift in mindset has helped me manage my nerves and approach each question with more clarity and calmness. My ultimate goal with the SAT is to score within a range that makes me competitive for my top-choice colleges, but I also have more personal goals. I want to feel proud of the effort I’ve put in, knowing that I’ve given it my best shot. Additionally, I aim to develop skills that will benefit me beyond the test—such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective time management. These are tools that I know will help me in college and in life, regardless of my SAT score. While preparing for the SAT has been challenging, it has also taught me the value of persistence, discipline, and self-awareness. My approach to the test has shifted from one of anxiety to one of growth. I’ve learned that the SAT is not just a measure of what I know but of how I approach challenges. As test day approaches, I feel more prepared and determined, knowing that the journey has already helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS that resonates deeply with my teenage experience is from the song “ballad of a homeschooled girl”: “Each time I step outside, it’s social suicide.” This lyric captures the essence of adolescence in a way that feels both painfully true and oddly comforting. It speaks to the awkwardness, self-consciousness, and insecurities that come with trying to navigate social situations as a teenager. For me, this lyric mirrors my own experiences of feeling like no matter how hard I tried to fit in, there was always this lingering sense that I wasn’t quite getting it right. I remember one particular moment during my freshman year of high school that felt like a scene straight out of this song. It was the first big social event of the year—a football game that seemingly everyone was going to. I spent the entire day anxiously deciding whether or not to go. The fear of missing out battled with my intense fear of making a fool of myself in front of my peers. Eventually, I convinced myself to go, thinking that this would be my opportunity to finally feel like I belonged. But as soon as I arrived, I realized how out of place I felt. Everyone seemed to know exactly where to stand, who to talk to, and what to say. I, on the other hand, felt like I was awkwardly hovering on the outskirts of conversations, unsure of how to jump in. I second-guessed every move I made, worrying that I was saying or doing the wrong thing. By the end of the night, I felt more disconnected than ever, and the words “social suicide” could not have felt more accurate. What I love about Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric is how it captures not just the awkwardness of those moments, but also the heightened emotions that come with them. As teenagers, everything feels like it’s happening on a grand stage, where one wrong move can feel like the end of the world. The lyric doesn’t just speak to the literal awkwardness of social interactions; it taps into the fear of not fitting in, of being judged, and of not living up to the unspoken social rules that seem to govern high school life. Looking back on that football game, I realize that my experience wasn’t unique. Many of my friends, who seemed so confident and at ease that night, later admitted to feeling just as insecure and awkward as I did. That’s part of the shared teenage experience that Rodrigo so perfectly captures. We’re all trying to figure it out—who we are, how we fit in, and how to navigate a world that sometimes feels like it’s just waiting for us to make a mistake. The lyric also resonates because it reminds me of how much pressure we put on ourselves during adolescence. We feel like every social interaction is a test, and if we fail, it will define us forever. But, like most things in life, those awkward moments pass, and they often teach us more about ourselves than the moments where everything seems to go right. For me, the “social suicide” moments have made me more self-aware, more compassionate toward others, and more willing to accept that it’s okay to be awkward and unsure sometimes. Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric reminds me that I’m not alone in these feelings—that all teenagers experience moments where they feel out of place. And while those moments may feel like “social suicide” at the time, they’re also part of growing up and figuring out who we are.
Ryan Stripling “Words Create Worlds” Scholarship for Young Writers
The first time I truly fell in love with writing was when I was twelve, sitting alone in my room after a particularly tough day at school. Instead of bottling up my frustration, I grabbed a notebook and started writing. What began as a simple journal entry turned into pages of free-flowing thoughts—my emotions, my worries, and my dreams. By the time I put down the pen, I felt lighter, like I had found a new way to understand myself. That’s when I realized writing was more than just words on a page—it was a form of expression, a release, and a way to make sense of my world. What I love most about writing is its versatility. Writing can take any shape—it can be a poem, a short story, an essay, or even just a few lines in a journal. No matter the form, writing always serves as a tool for discovery. I love how writing allows me to explore different perspectives, step into new worlds, and express emotions that are hard to articulate in conversation. It’s through writing that I’ve learned to think critically, engage deeply with my thoughts, and communicate in a way that resonates with others. In high school, I began to explore writing in a more structured way. I joined the school newspaper, where I wrote articles on a variety of topics—from school events to opinion pieces on social issues. The process of researching, drafting, and refining my work taught me how powerful writing can be when it’s used to inform, persuade, or inspire. It wasn’t just about telling a story; it was about engaging readers and giving them something to think about. Seeing my work in print, knowing it could make someone pause and reflect, was incredibly rewarding. College presents a new chapter in my writing journey, and I plan to continue developing my skills in various ways. First, I hope to join a student-run publication or creative writing club, where I can collaborate with other writers and receive feedback on my work. Writing alongside others will push me to experiment with new forms, whether it’s poetry, fiction, or long-form journalism. I’m eager to grow in an environment that encourages creativity and intellectual exploration. In addition to creative writing, I plan to continue honing my academic writing skills. Research papers and essays have always been a challenge I enjoy, as they allow me to dive deep into subjects I’m passionate about. Whether I’m analyzing a novel in a literature class or writing a case study for a social sciences course, I know that writing will play a central role in my academic journey. College will provide the perfect space for me to refine my ability to craft well-researched, thoughtful arguments that reflect both critical thinking and clear communication. Beyond the classroom, I’ll continue using writing as a personal outlet. Journaling has always been my way of processing emotions and reflecting on experiences, and I plan to carry that practice with me into college. As I navigate new challenges, build relationships, and learn more about myself, writing will help me document my growth and preserve memories that I can look back on in the future. Ultimately, I love writing because it’s a tool for connection—whether I’m connecting with myself, sharing a story, or engaging with an audience. College will offer countless opportunities to continue that journey, and I’m excited to see where my writing takes me. I’m eager to explore new forms, tackle new subjects, and continue using words to make sense of the world and share that understanding with others.

My grandparent’s battle with cancer was a pivotal experience in my life, profoundly shaping who I am today. Witnessing someone I loved dearly endure such a difficult journey opened my eyes to the complexities of illness, the importance of family support, and the strength of the human spirit. This experience left a lasting impact on me, influencing my values, aspirations, and perspective on life. From the moment we learned of the diagnosis, my family’s world was turned upside down. Suddenly, hospital visits, treatment plans, and doctor consultations became part of our everyday lives. I remember the overwhelming fear and uncertainty that came with each new development and the resilience my grandparents showed throughout the process. Watching them face such a daunting illness with grace and courage left a deep impression on me. I learned that strength is not about avoiding pain or hardship but confronting it head-on, even when the outcome is uncertain. During this time, I also developed a profound appreciation for the value of support systems. My family came together in ways we never had before, providing emotional, physical, and even financial support to ensure my grandparents received the best care possible. I saw firsthand how love, patience, and empathy can lift people up, even in the darkest moments. It was during this period that I began to understand the true meaning of compassion and selflessness. My grandparent’s cancer journey reminded me that, at the end of the day, it is the people around us who matter most, and that caring for others is one of life’s greatest responsibilities. This experience also reshaped my aspirations and sense of purpose. I had always been interested in helping others, but my grandparent’s journey deepened that desire and gave it direction. I realized the immense impact that healthcare professionals, social workers, and counselors have on individuals and their families during times of crisis. The doctors who treated my grandparents, the nurses who provided care, and even the volunteers who spent time with us in the hospital were all part of a larger network that brought comfort and relief amid suffering. Seeing their dedication and compassion inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a similar difference in the lives of others. The emotional toll of the experience also taught me the importance of resilience. There were moments of profound sadness and fear, and times when it felt like hope was slipping away. Yet, through it all, I learned that resilience is not about pushing away pain, but about enduring it and finding the strength to continue. I now approach challenges in my life with the mindset that, while they may be difficult, I have the ability to face them and move forward. In addition to fostering my sense of resilience, my grandparent’s cancer journey gave me a deeper understanding of the fragility of life. It reminded me that every moment is precious and that we should strive to live with purpose and intention. This realization has encouraged me to focus on what truly matters—my relationships with others, my personal growth, and how I can contribute to the well-being of those around me. In conclusion, my grandparent’s battle with cancer profoundly impacted who I am. It taught me the value of resilience, compassion, and family support, and shaped my aspirations for the future. I am determined to carry these lessons with me in all that I do and to use my experiences to inspire and support others who may be facing their struggles. While the journey was difficult, it ultimately shaped me into a more empathetic, driven, and purposeful individual.
    Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish is an artist who has always stood out for her unique sound, raw lyrics, and emotional depth. Her music speaks to me on so many levels, and her songs often reflect feelings and experiences that I have personally navigated. It’s difficult to pick just three songs, but if I had to choose, the ones that resonate with me the most are “everything i wanted,” “when the party’s over,” and “idontwannabeyouanymore.” Each of these tracks captures different aspects of vulnerability, identity, and personal growth, themes that have significantly impacted my life. “Everything I wanted” is one of Billie’s songs that instantly resonated with me. The song addresses the complex emotions of self-doubt, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of life. What makes it even more powerful is the support she receives from her brother, Finneas, which she sings about in the lyrics. It’s a reminder that no matter how hard life may seem or how lost we may feel, having someone who believes in us makes all the difference. This song speaks to me because it mirrors moments in my life when I’ve felt unsure of myself, yet I’ve been fortunate enough to have family and close friends who remind me of my worth and help me stay grounded. Next is “when the party’s over,” a hauntingly beautiful song that explores heartbreak, loss, and letting go. The simplicity of its composition, paired with Billie’s soft, melancholic voice, makes it a deeply emotional track. For me, it’s the perfect expression of how difficult it can be to let go of someone or something we care about, even when we know it’s the right thing to do. The lyric “I’ll only hurt you if you let me” is especially striking because it reminds me of the internal struggle we often face when we care deeply for someone, knowing that staying in a situation can cause more harm than good. This song has helped me process my own feelings of loss, allowing me to acknowledge the pain and, eventually, find peace. Finally, “idontwannabeyouanymore” is a song that deeply resonates with my personal journey of self-acceptance. The song is about struggling with self-worth and feeling disconnected from one’s identity. The lyrics “If teardrops could be bottled / There’d be swimming pools filled by models” reflect the pressure to conform to societal standards of beauty and success. This song hits close to home because, like many people, I’ve faced moments where I’ve questioned myself or felt like I wasn’t enough. Listening to this song reminds me that these feelings are universal and that I’m not alone in my journey toward self-acceptance. It’s also a reminder that embracing who I am, imperfections and all, is a powerful and freeing experience. In conclusion, Billie Eilish’s music resonates with me so deeply because it captures the complexities of emotion and personal growth that we all experience in life. “everything i wanted,” “when the party’s over,” and “idontwannabeyouanymore” are more than just songs to me; they are reflections of my own challenges, triumphs, and ongoing journey toward understanding myself and the world around me. Through her music, Billie has created a space for vulnerability and honesty, and I find solace and strength in the way her lyrics reflect the feelings that can often be hard to express.

My athletic journey has been one of the most transformative experiences in my life. From the moment I first stepped onto a field, I knew that sports would play a major role in shaping who I am. Over the years, athletics has taught me discipline, teamwork, resilience, and leadership, all of which have become core values in both my personal and academic life. Through countless practices, games, wins, and losses, I have learned that success is not just about talent, but about dedication, effort, and the willingness to grow through challenges. One of the most important lessons I have learned from my athletic journey is the value of discipline. To excel in any sport, I had to commit to a rigorous practice schedule, balance it with my academic responsibilities, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This discipline extended far beyond the field. It taught me how to set goals, manage my time, and stay focused even when things got tough. These skills have been invaluable in my schoolwork, as they’ve helped me remain organized and motivated. Teamwork is another lesson that has profoundly shaped me. In every sport I’ve participated in, I’ve had to rely on my teammates just as much as they’ve relied on me. Sports have taught me that individual talent only goes so far, and that true success comes from working together toward a common goal. This understanding has not only made me a better athlete, but it has also helped me in group projects and leadership roles off the field. Learning to communicate, trust, and collaborate with others has been key to my growth as a person. Resilience is perhaps the most important trait I have developed through sports. There have been moments when I’ve faced injuries, lost important games, or felt that I wasn’t improving fast enough. But every setback has taught me the importance of perseverance. Instead of giving up, I learned to push through adversity and come back stronger. This mindset has helped me in all areas of life, especially when facing academic or personal challenges. Sports have shown me that failure is not the end, but rather a stepping stone to future success. My athletic journey has also provided me with numerous leadership opportunities. Whether as a team captain or an older teammate mentoring younger players, I have learned how to lead by example, motivate others, and foster a positive team environment. Being a leader has taught me that leadership is not about giving orders but about inspiring and supporting others to be their best. This ability to lead has carried over into other areas of my life, such as school clubs and volunteer work. I believe that the lessons I’ve learned through sports have equipped me to make a meaningful impact on others. By sharing my experiences and the values I’ve gained, I hope to inspire others to pursue their own athletic or personal goals with determination and resilience. Whether it’s through coaching, mentoring, or simply leading by example, I want to show others that success is about more than just winning—it's about growth, learning, and overcoming challenges. In conclusion, my athletic journey has shaped me into a disciplined, resilient, and team-oriented person. It has taught me the value of hard work, the importance of collaboration, and the power of perseverance. I am eager to use the lessons I’ve learned to make a positive impact on others, both on and off the field.
    Student Referee Scholarship
One of my favorite memories of refereeing came during a highly competitive youth soccer match where both teams were evenly matched. It was a crucial game for both sides, and tensions were high. In the final minutes, with the score tied, a controversial foul occurred in the penalty area. I had to make an immediate decision whether to award a penalty kick, which would likely decide the outcome of the game. I made the call based on what I saw, knowing that whatever decision I made would be met with disagreement from one side. As expected, one team was thrilled with the decision, while the other was furious. Yet, despite the pressure and emotions running high, I remained calm and explained the reasoning behind my decision to both teams. In the end, the game continued, and although the team awarded the penalty kick went on to win, the losing team eventually accepted the outcome and displayed good sportsmanship. This moment stands out as a favorite memory not only because of the high stakes but because it reminded me of the important role a referee plays in ensuring fairness and integrity in sports. Participating in sports as a referee has significantly strengthened my character. First and foremost, it has taught me how to remain composed under pressure. In fast-paced and often emotionally charged environments, referees are expected to make quick, impartial decisions. This responsibility has helped me develop the ability to stay calm, assess situations objectively, and maintain confidence in my decisions. These qualities have translated into other areas of my life, where I am better able to handle stress and make important decisions with clarity and fairness. Additionally, refereeing has reinforced my sense of fairness and integrity. As a referee, it’s essential to treat every player, coach, and team with respect and impartiality, regardless of the circumstances. This has deepened my commitment to honesty and fairness in everything I do, as I understand how vital these qualities are to maintaining trust and respect, both on and off the field. Refereeing has also sharpened my communication and leadership skills. When tensions rise during a game, it’s important to not only make the right call but also to effectively communicate the decision to players, coaches, and sometimes even spectators. Over time, I’ve learned how to assertively and respectfully explain my decisions, even in the face of disagreement. This skill has made me a more confident communicator and has improved my ability to resolve conflicts. As I look to the future, I plan to continue participating in refereeing, particularly at higher levels of competition. I’m eager to refine my skills, take on more challenging games, and perhaps even explore opportunities to referee in college or professional settings. Refereeing has become more than just a way to stay involved in sports; it has become a passion that I want to continue pursuing. I also hope to mentor younger referees and encourage more people to get involved in officiating, as I believe it’s an incredibly valuable way to develop leadership, fairness, and confidence. In conclusion, refereeing has had a profound impact on my character, teaching me invaluable lessons about fairness, composure, and effective communication. My favorite memories on the field have been those where I’ve had to make tough decisions and stand by them, knowing that I was contributing to the integrity of the game. I look forward to continuing this journey and growing both as a referee and as a person.

Growing up in a single-parent household has shaped me into the person I am today in ways I couldn’t have imagined. My upbringing, marked by resilience, responsibility, and a deep sense of appreciation for hard work, has instilled values that continue to guide me. My mother, the backbone of our family, has always been a source of strength and inspiration. She wore many hats—provider, caretaker, mentor—and through her, I learned what it means to be dedicated, persistent, and resourceful. In a home where responsibilities were shared early on, I quickly developed a sense of independence. From a young age, I understood the need to help out and contribute in meaningful ways. Whether it was helping with household chores or supporting my younger siblings, I became more than just a child; I became a partner in making sure our home ran smoothly. This experience fostered a sense of responsibility that has influenced every area of my life, from academics to extracurricular activities. One of the most significant moments that led to a deeper understanding of myself came when I started my baking business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats. What started as a hobby quickly turned into something much bigger, and it was an accomplishment that brought me not only pride but a realization of my own potential. Running a business, while balancing school and other commitments, was challenging, but it gave me a new perspective on what I was capable of achieving. Through this venture, I realized that hard work and passion could come together to create something meaningful. Baking had always been a creative outlet for me, but turning it into a business taught me about perseverance, time management, and the importance of community. As I took orders from customers and received feedback, I began to see the impact my work could have on others. Something as simple as a custom cake for someone’s birthday brought smiles and joy to people’s lives, and that, in turn, brought me a sense of fulfillment I hadn’t expected. This journey also helped me understand others on a deeper level. As I interacted with customers from different backgrounds, I learned the importance of communication and listening. Each person had a unique request or story behind why they were ordering a treat, and those stories allowed me to connect with people in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I realized that everyone has their own challenges and celebrations, and my role—though small—was to contribute to their happiness. It gave me a sense of purpose beyond just running a business; it was about creating connections and making a positive impact. Living in a single-parent household and starting my own business taught me resilience and adaptability. There were many days when things didn’t go as planned—whether at home or in my business—but I learned to pivot and find solutions. These experiences have shaped my mindset, making me not only more resourceful but also more empathetic toward others. This realization about myself and others—that through hard work, creativity, and a genuine desire to serve, I could make a difference—has transformed the way I approach life. It’s no longer just about personal success; it’s about how I can use my skills, experiences, and talents to uplift those around me. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons I’ve learned from both my upbringing and my accomplishments, always striving to be the best version of myself while helping others do the same.
    First-Gen Futures Scholarship
The decision to pursue higher education is one that I have carefully considered, and it reflects my deep desire for personal growth, intellectual development, and the chance to create opportunities for myself and my family. As a first-generation student, the path to college is not just about academic achievement; it is about breaking barriers and setting a new standard for what is possible within my family. My choice to pursue higher education stems from a commitment to better myself, my community, and to open doors that were not available to previous generations in my family. Growing up, I saw the challenges that come with limited access to educational opportunities. My parents, who worked hard to provide for our family, always emphasized the importance of education. However, due to various circumstances, they were unable to pursue higher education themselves. Their stories of hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice have inspired me to seize the opportunities they didn’t have. College represents a way to not only change my own future but to honor the hard work my family has put into getting me to this point. I want to pursue higher education because it is a critical step toward achieving my long-term goals of career success and making a positive impact on society. As a first-generation student, the path to college has required extra preparation and self-reliance. Without the direct experience of my parents to guide me, I have had to take initiative in navigating the college application process, financial aid forms, and understanding what it takes to be successful in higher education. Early on, I sought help from teachers, mentors, and counselors who helped me understand the academic and logistical requirements of college. I also attended college prep workshops and sought out resources that provided guidance on topics such as applying for scholarships, time management, and studying effectively in college. In addition to academic preparation, I have actively engaged in leadership roles and extracurricular activities that have helped me build the skills necessary for success in college. As the President of my high school’s DECA chapter, I gained experience in managing teams, organizing events, and making decisions under pressure. These leadership experiences have not only prepared me for the demands of college-level work but have also taught me how to manage my time, collaborate with others, and take initiative in challenging situations. Furthermore, I have taken advantage of academic opportunities such as honors and advanced placement courses to challenge myself academically and prepare for the rigor of college coursework. These classes have helped me develop critical thinking skills, resilience, and the ability to manage a heavy workload, all of which I know will be crucial in college. Additionally, I have worked hard to maintain a strong GPA, balancing academics with extracurricular commitments and part-time work to contribute financially to my household. This experience has taught me the value of perseverance and time management, and it has shown me that I am capable of handling the demands of college. As I prepare to embark on my college journey, I know that there will be challenges ahead. However, my experiences as a first-generation student have taught me how to be resourceful, resilient, and determined. I am ready to face the challenges of higher education and to make the most of the opportunities that come my way. College is not just a personal goal for me; it is a way to uplift my family and create a legacy of achievement that will inspire future generations.

My name is Diamond King, and I’m currently a senior at Dutchtown High School. Over the years, I’ve developed a strong academic foundation while being actively involved in leadership roles and extracurricular activities. My school experience has shaped my interests in business, community service, and leadership, all of which have become central to my identity. One of my key interests is entrepreneurship, which I’ve had the chance to explore through my business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats. Running this business has been an incredible learning experience that has taught me valuable skills such as financial management, marketing, and customer relations. However, what I enjoy most about it is using the business to give back to my community. I’ve organized fundraisers and donation drives to support local causes, which has strengthened my passion for community service. I’m also heavily involved in extracurricular activities at my school. As the President of our DECA chapter, I help students prepare for business competitions, improve their public speaking, and build leadership skills. Additionally, I’m the Captain of the Dutchtown Starz dance team, where I’ve had the privilege of leading my teammates in practices, performances, and competitions. Dance has always been a creative outlet for me, and it has taught me discipline, resilience, and the value of teamwork. Outside of school, I am passionate about community involvement. I’ve volunteered with various organizations, including local shelters and food banks, helping to organize events and assist those in need. This work has deepened my commitment to using my skills and resources to support underserved communities. After high school, I plan to attend college to study business and law. My goal is to work in fields where I can advocate for social justice and create opportunities for marginalized communities. I’m particularly interested in how legal systems and business practices can promote equity and inclusion. If I could start my own charity, its mission would be to combat period poverty and promote menstrual equity. The charity would focus on providing free menstrual products to women and girls in low-income communities, ensuring they can attend school and work without the barriers that come from lack of access to basic hygiene products. Additionally, the charity would offer educational workshops on menstrual health, breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation. The charity would serve women and girls in underserved communities, both locally and globally. Volunteers would organize product drives, distribute care packages, and lead educational workshops. They could also mentor young girls, helping them build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of empowerment. The ultimate goal would be to promote health, dignity, and equality for all women and girls, ensuring that no one is held back by a lack of basic resources.

Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Being raised in a single-parent household has profoundly shaped who I am and has played a key role in influencing my goals and aspirations. My mother, a hardworking and determined woman, has been my guiding light. Watching her balance multiple responsibilities—working long hours to provide for our family while ensuring I had the support I needed to pursue my dreams—instilled in me values of resilience, determination, and empathy. These experiences have not only molded me into a stronger individual but have also shaped my vision for the future, where I aim to use my talents and skills to do good and help others. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the challenges my mother faced in juggling the emotional, financial, and practical demands of raising a family on her own. Her unwavering commitment to my education and well-being motivated me to push myself academically and creatively. The sense of responsibility she shouldered was inspiring, and it planted the seed in me to strive for a future where I could give back to others, especially those in similar circumstances. One of the most valuable lessons I learned from my upbringing is the importance of using adversity as fuel for growth. I developed a strong work ethic early on, as I balanced my academics with extracurricular activities, including running my own baking business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats. The challenges of managing my time, fulfilling customer orders, and maintaining high academic standards mirrored the hard work I saw my mother put into our family. Running my business taught me leadership, organization, and creativity—skills that I plan to carry forward into my future endeavors. As I look toward the future, my experiences have made me passionate about the idea of social entrepreneurship—using business as a tool for social good. I aspire to create businesses and programs that not only provide services or products but also uplift communities, particularly those affected by economic hardship or family challenges. I believe that my unique perspective, having grown up in a single-parent household, has given me the empathy and drive to want to create opportunities for others to succeed, especially for children and families facing similar struggles. I also envision using my talents in entrepreneurship and leadership to mentor and support young people, particularly those from underserved backgrounds. I know firsthand how critical it is to have role models and guidance, especially when resources are limited. Through workshops, mentorship programs, and community engagement, I plan to create avenues for young people to develop their talents, gain confidence, and understand that their circumstances do not define their potential. In addition to my business aspirations, I aim to advocate for policies that support single-parent families and provide greater access to resources like affordable childcare, education, and health services. My personal experience has given me insight into the gaps in support systems for single-parent households, and I hope to use my platform in the future to push for positive change in these areas. Ultimately, my journey of being raised in a single-parent household has fueled my desire to succeed, not just for myself but for others who may face similar challenges. I envision a future where I can combine my talents in entrepreneurship, leadership, and advocacy to create positive, lasting change. Whether through building socially responsible businesses, mentoring young people, or advocating for policy reforms, my goal is to use my experiences to lift others up and create a more equitable world for all.

Everyone experiences adversity in their lives, and for me, it came in the form of an overwhelming loss—losing both of my grandparents within nine months of each other. They were my biggest supporters, always guiding me with their wisdom, love, and constant encouragement. Their passing shook me to my core, leaving a void that seemed impossible to fill. In many ways, it felt as though the foundation I had built my life on had crumbled. The months following their deaths were incredibly difficult. I felt lost and unsure of how to move forward. On top of the emotional weight, I was juggling school responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and managing my own small business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats. Balancing everything while dealing with grief was overwhelming, and I found myself questioning whether I could handle it all. However, through this adversity, I discovered an inner resilience I didn’t know I had. Rather than letting the grief consume me, I chose to honor my grandparents’ memory by continuing to pursue the goals they always encouraged me to follow. I leaned into the lessons they taught me—about hard work, perseverance, and staying true to myself—using those values as a source of strength. I started setting small, achievable goals, whether it was completing a school assignment or fulfilling orders for my baking business. Slowly, I began to regain my footing, realizing that while I couldn’t change the past, I could control how I responded to it. Running Dk’s Sweets & Treats became more than just a business during this time; it became a lifeline. Baking allowed me to channel my emotions into something creative and productive. Every cake, every cookie I baked felt like a tribute to the love and encouragement my grandparents had given me. It was a way of moving forward while keeping a part of them with me. Through hard work and dedication, I was able to grow my business, even during such a difficult time. This experience taught me that even in the darkest moments, there are ways to find light and purpose. Adversity has undeniably shaped me into a more resilient, empathetic, and driven person. It made me realize that life will always have challenges, but it’s how we respond to those challenges that define who we are. I’ve learned that resilience doesn’t mean being unaffected by pain, but rather, it’s about continuing to move forward, even when things seem unbearable. My experiences have also made me more understanding of others’ struggles, as I know firsthand how difficult it can be to keep going in the face of loss or hardship. If I were to offer advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would first tell them that it’s okay to grieve and to feel overwhelmed. The key is to take it one step at a time and not be afraid to ask for help. Surround yourself with people who love and support you, and don’t hesitate to lean on them when you need to. Find something—whether it’s a passion, a hobby, or a goal—that allows you to focus your energy on something positive. For me, it was baking, but for others, it could be anything that brings them peace or fulfillment. Most importantly, remember that adversity is a part of life, but it doesn’t define your entire story. You are stronger than you think, and with time, things will get better. Ultimately, the adversity I faced has shaped me into the person I am today—a person who is resilient, determined, and unafraid to face challenges head-on.

I am planning to study Political Science and Business in higher education, with a focus on law and entrepreneurship. I have chosen this path because I believe that understanding the intersection of law, politics, and business is crucial for creating impactful change in society. I’ve planned an entrepreneurial career because I’ve always been drawn to the idea of turning a passion into a thriving venture. Through Dk’s Sweets & Treats, I’ve learned the importance of creativity, resilience, and problem-solving, which are essential traits for any entrepreneur. My ability to learn from mistakes, adapt to challenges, and embrace change will set me apart in the competitive business world. Additionally, my passion for entrepreneurship is driven by a sense of purpose, not just profit. To me, a successful life is one where I am able to align my career with my values, create opportunities for others, and leave a lasting legacy that reflects my dedication to both personal and community growth.
Devin Chase Vancil Art and Music Scholarship
My name is Diamond King, and I am a student who is deeply passionate about creativity and entrepreneurship. From running my baking business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats, to my love for public speaking and majorette dancing, I’ve always found ways to combine my passions with leadership and community involvement. Growing up, I discovered that art—whether through visual mediums, performance, or even culinary arts—plays a crucial role in shaping not just my personal development, but also the fabric of society itself. For me, art and music are more than just forms of expression; they are essential tools that foster connection, culture, and understanding across diverse groups. Art allows us to communicate in ways that transcend language, bridging gaps between individuals and cultures. It provides an outlet for emotions, thoughts, and ideas that words often fail to convey. Whether it’s through a painting, a sculpture, or a song, art has a unique ability to convey the shared human experience—joy, sorrow, hope, and resilience. It’s this emotional resonance that makes art and music so vital to the well-being of society. One of the reasons I believe art is so important is its ability to shape identity and preserve culture. In my own experience, art has helped me embrace who I am and understand my heritage. Growing up in a world that constantly pushes us to assimilate, art serves as a reminder of our roots, helping us stay connected to our cultural identities. It celebrates diversity and allows individuals to express their unique stories, histories, and perspectives. Without art, we risk losing the richness and depth of our collective human heritage. Moreover, art and music play a significant role in social change. Throughout history, art has been a powerful tool for activism and resistance. Whether it’s the protest songs of the Civil Rights Movement or the bold works of modern visual artists addressing environmental and political issues, art has always been at the forefront of pushing society toward justice and equality. It is through creative expression that people often challenge norms, spark conversations, and inspire movements. Music and art have the capacity to open minds and hearts, making them critical vehicles for change in any society. From a personal standpoint, my experience with majorette dancing has shown me how performance art can build community and foster teamwork. As captain of my dance team, I’ve learned that dance is a language of its own, connecting people in a way that nothing else can. Whether we are performing in front of a crowd or practicing together, dance unites us, teaches discipline, and fosters creativity. It brings people from all walks of life together, creating shared experiences that deepen our sense of belonging and empathy. I also believe that art and music are essential to mental and emotional well-being. In a world where we are constantly bombarded by information and stress, art provides an outlet for escape, reflection, and healing. Whether through drawing, writing, playing an instrument, or listening to a song, engaging with art allows us to process our emotions and experiences in a healthy, productive way. This is why I’m such an advocate for integrating the arts into education and community programs. In conclusion, art and music are not just forms of entertainment; they are pillars of society. They shape culture, drive social change, and provide vital outlets for emotional expression and healing. Art and music make the world more vibrant, more empathetic, and ultimately, more connected.

    Karl L. Burnell Memorial Scholarship
Diabetes has had a profound impact on my life, shaping both my personal experiences and academic interests. My grandmother and grandfather both passed away from complications related to diabetes, leaving a lasting impression on me about the seriousness of this disease. Watching their health decline, despite their efforts to manage their conditions, was heartbreaking and fueled my desire to understand this illness more deeply. Their struggles highlighted the urgent need for better treatments and preventive measures, especially within communities that are disproportionately affected by diabetes. These personal experiences have driven me to pursue research focused on diabetes, particularly in the areas of prevention and management. I am especially interested in exploring the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the high prevalence of diabetes in minority communities. My goal is to contribute to the development of more effective, personalized treatments that can improve outcomes for those living with diabetes. Additionally, I plan to engage in research that investigates the role of lifestyle interventions in preventing the onset of diabetes, aiming to provide accessible, practical solutions that can empower individuals to take control of their health. By pursuing this research, I hope to honor my grandparents' legacy and contribute to the fight against a disease that has touched my family so deeply.
Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
Choosing to pursue a degree in STEM is a decision that reflects both my deep curiosity about the world around me and my commitment to making a meaningful impact in society. From an early age, I have been fascinated by how things work—whether it was experimenting with my first chemistry set, building simple machines, or more recently, exploring the intricacies of coding and renewable energy technologies. STEM fields represent the cutting edge of innovation, offering endless opportunities to solve complex problems, improve lives, and drive progress. For me, STEM is not just about acquiring knowledge; it is about applying that knowledge to create a better future. As a person of color, I recognize that my journey in STEM comes with unique challenges and responsibilities. The underrepresentation of people of color in STEM is a persistent issue, often leading to a lack of diverse perspectives in research and innovation. This underrepresentation can contribute to the perpetuation of systemic biases in technology and science, which, in turn, affects communities of color disproportionately. My decision to pursue a degree in STEM is driven not only by my passion for the field but also by a desire to help bridge this gap and contribute to the diversification of the STEM workforce. In terms of impact, I hope to be a role model and advocate for greater inclusion in STEM. I want to demonstrate that young people of color can succeed in these fields and that our contributions are vital to the advancement of science and technology. By excelling in my studies and actively participating in STEM-related initiatives, I hope to inspire the next generation of students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in STEM. Representation matters, and seeing someone who looks like them achieving success in STEM can have a powerful impact on young students' aspirations. Beyond being a role model, I aim to leverage my STEM education to address issues that disproportionately affect communities of color. For example, I am particularly interested in sustainable energy and environmental technology, areas where marginalized communities often face the greatest environmental injustices. Many low-income communities of color are located in areas with high pollution levels and limited access to clean energy solutions. I aspire to work on developing affordable, sustainable energy technologies that can be implemented in these communities, reducing their environmental burden and improving overall quality of life. Moreover, as a person of color in STEM, I plan to use my platform to advocate for policy changes that promote diversity and inclusion within the field. This includes pushing for more inclusive hiring practices, supporting STEM education programs in underserved communities, and ensuring that the voices of people of color are heard and valued in scientific research and technological development. By combining my technical expertise with a commitment to social justice, I hope to contribute to a STEM field that is not only innovative but also equitable and inclusive. In conclusion, my choice to pursue a degree in STEM is driven by a passion for discovery, a commitment to making a positive impact, and a desire to promote greater diversity and inclusion within the field. As a person of color, I see my role in STEM as not only a personal journey but also a way to contribute to broader societal change. Through my studies and future career, I hope to inspire others, advocate for equity, and use science and technology to address the challenges faced by underrepresented communities.
Lindsey Vonn ‘GREAT Starts With GRIT’ Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have encountered several obstacles that have tested my resilience, determination, and commitment to my goals. However, it is through these challenges that I have cultivated a gritty mindset—one characterized by perseverance, passion, and an unwavering belief in my ability to overcome adversity. This mindset has not only enabled me to navigate difficult situations but has also shaped my approach to life, pushing me to keep striving toward my aspirations, no matter the setbacks. One of the most significant challenges I faced was the sudden loss of my grandparents, who had been a constant source of support and guidance throughout my life. Their passing left a void that was difficult to fill, and I struggled to cope with the grief while trying to maintain my focus on school and personal goals. It was during this time that I learned the true meaning of grit. Instead of succumbing to the overwhelming sadness, I decided to channel my emotions into something positive. I threw myself into my schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and my baking business, Dk’s Sweets & Treats, using these outlets as a way to honor my grandparents' memory and keep their legacy alive. Balancing the demands of running a business with academic responsibilities was another challenge that required a gritty mindset. There were many late nights and early mornings spent baking, packaging orders, and managing the business while also studying for exams and completing assignments. The pressure was immense, and there were moments when I questioned whether I could continue. However, my passion for baking and my determination to succeed kept me going. I learned to manage my time effectively, prioritize tasks, and stay focused on the bigger picture. This experience taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Another instance that tested my grit was when I decided to compete in public speaking competitions through 4-H, despite my fear of speaking in front of large audiences. Public speaking had always been a challenge for me, but I knew that developing this skill was crucial for my personal and professional growth. The initial competitions were daunting, and I faced setbacks, including nerves that affected my performance. However, I refused to let these setbacks define me. I practiced tirelessly, sought feedback, and gradually gained confidence. My perseverance paid off when I won first place at the district and state levels, a victory that not only boosted my confidence but also reinforced my belief in the power of grit and determination. These experiences have taught me that grit is not just about enduring hardships but about embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. It is about staying committed to your goals, even when the path is difficult, and finding ways to turn obstacles into stepping stones toward success. The challenges I have faced have shaped me into a resilient, determined individual who is not afraid to take risks, learn from failures, and keep pushing forward. As I continue my journey, I carry with me the lessons learned from these experiences. I am committed to approaching every challenge with the same gritty mindset that has guided me thus far. Whether in my academic pursuits, personal life, or future career, I am confident that this mindset will enable me to overcome any obstacle and achieve my goals. My journey has shown me that grit is not just a quality to be admired but a way of life—a way of approaching the world with resilience, determination, and an unshakeable belief in one’s ability to succeed.
Jennifer and Rob Tower Memorial Scholarship
Kindness is a value that I hold deeply, and I have made it a cornerstone of my leadership style at school. As a leader in various capacities, whether as the president of DECA, a member of the Student Council, or a 4-H Ambassador, I have strived to lead with empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to uplift those around me. One instance that stands out to me involves my role as a peer mentor, where I used kindness to create a supportive environment for my fellow students, positively impacting their lives in ways that extended far beyond the classroom. During my junior year, our school initiated a peer mentoring program designed to help freshmen transition smoothly into high school. As a leader who was passionate about fostering a positive and inclusive school culture, I volunteered to be a mentor. I knew firsthand how intimidating the first year of high school could be, and I wanted to help ease that transition for others. I was assigned a group of freshmen to mentor throughout the year, and I approached this responsibility with the goal of not just helping them academically, but also ensuring that they felt valued, supported, and confident in their new environment. One of the students in my group, Sarah, stood out from the beginning. She was quiet and withdrawn, often sitting alone during lunch and rarely participating in group activities. It became clear that she was struggling to adjust, and I knew that she needed more than just academic guidance—she needed kindness and a sense of belonging. I made it a point to reach out to her individually, inviting her to join me and my friends during lunch and encouraging her to participate in school activities. At first, she was hesitant, but I continued to extend kindness, understanding that it might take time for her to feel comfortable. Over the weeks, I noticed small changes in Sarah. She began to open up more during our mentoring sessions, sharing her thoughts and ideas, and even started to participate in after-school clubs. My consistent efforts to include her and show her that she mattered were starting to pay off. By the end of the year, Sarah had not only found her footing in high school but had also become an active member of the student body. She later told me that my kindness had made all the difference, giving her the confidence to come out of her shell and engage with others. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of kindness as a leadership tool. It’s easy to focus on tasks, goals, and achievements, but true leadership goes beyond that—it’s about connecting with people on a human level, understanding their struggles, and helping them realize their potential. By showing kindness, I was able to positively impact Sarah’s high school experience, turning what could have been a difficult and isolating time into one of growth and connection. But the impact of kindness didn’t stop with Sarah. The example I set as a peer mentor began to ripple outwards, influencing the dynamics within our mentoring group and beyond. Other students in my group started to emulate the kindness they saw, reaching out to their peers, offering help when someone seemed overwhelmed, and fostering a more inclusive atmosphere. The culture of our mentoring group became one of support and camaraderie, where everyone felt safe to express themselves and ask for help when needed. As a leader, I also emphasized the importance of kindness in the larger school community. I organized kindness campaigns through the Student Council, encouraging students to perform small acts of kindness, such as writing positive notes to each other, helping a classmate with homework, or simply offering a smile to someone who seemed down. These efforts helped to create a more positive and connected school environment, where kindness was not just an occasional act, but a way of life. One of the most rewarding aspects of these campaigns was seeing how they brought students together. For example, during one of our “Kindness Week” initiatives, a student who was often teased for being different received an outpouring of support from classmates who, inspired by the campaign, went out of their way to show him kindness. This simple but powerful shift in behavior had a lasting impact, not only on that student but on the school culture as a whole. It demonstrated that when kindness is prioritized, it can break down barriers, foster inclusivity, and create a sense of community where everyone feels valued. The pattern of kindness I have shown as a leader at school has taught me invaluable lessons about the impact of empathy and compassion. It has reinforced the idea that leadership is not just about directing others, but about serving them—lifting them up, inspiring them, and helping them succeed. Through kindness, I have been able to create positive change, not only in individual lives but in the broader school community. As I move forward, I am committed to continuing this pattern of kindness in all areas of my life. Whether in future leadership roles, my career, or my personal relationships, I believe that kindness is the key to making a meaningful difference. It’s about recognizing the humanity in others, offering support when it’s needed most, and creating environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. The impact of kindness is profound and far-reaching, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced its power firsthand. In conclusion, my journey as a leader has been deeply intertwined with the practice of kindness. From mentoring a struggling student to fostering a more inclusive school culture, kindness has been the guiding principle that has shaped my actions and influenced others. The positive impact of this approach has reinforced my belief in the power of empathy and compassion, and I am committed to carrying these values with me as I continue to grow as a leader and a person.

This environment taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and the importance of education as a means to overcome adversity. One of the most significant challenges I faced was the lack of access to resources. Mast cell diseases are often discussed in terms of their complex and varied medical symptoms, but their impact goes far beyond the physical, deeply influencing personal and family life, as well as shaping future plans. Living with a mast cell disease is a unique and challenging journey, one that affects not only the individual diagnosed but also their loved ones in profound ways. For me, the diagnosis of mast cell disease has brought about significant changes in nearly every aspect of life. Physically, the unpredictable nature of symptoms—ranging from mild discomfort to severe, life-threatening reactions—requires constant vigilance and adaptation. This unpredictability means that daily activities, once taken for granted, now require careful planning and consideration. Something as simple as a meal, a change in weather, or exposure to a new environment can trigger symptoms, making every day feel like walking a tightrope. Emotionally, the journey has been taxing. The stress of managing a chronic illness, combined with the uncertainty of when and how symptoms will present themselves, can lead to feelings of isolation and anxiety. The need to always be on guard, to carry emergency medications, and to constantly explain the condition to others can be exhausting. Despite these challenges, living with mast cell disease has also fostered resilience and a deeper understanding of the importance of mental and emotional well-being. The impact of mast cell disease extends to my family, who have had to adapt alongside me. Family life has had to become more flexible, with everyone understanding that plans may need to change at a moment's notice. This has required a great deal of patience, empathy, and support from my loved ones. They have become more than just family—they are my caregivers, my advocates, and my biggest supporters. Their understanding and willingness to accommodate the limitations imposed by my condition have been crucial in helping me navigate this journey. The need for a supportive environment has brought my family closer, teaching us the value of open communication and mutual support. We've learned to celebrate small victories, such as a symptom-free day or successfully managing a challenging situation. However, the burden on my family is undeniable, as they too must adjust their lives around the unpredictability of mast cell disease. This shared experience has strengthened our bonds but has also required significant sacrifices, particularly in terms of time and emotional energy. Looking to the future, mast cell disease has inevitably shaped my plans. Career choices, educational pursuits, and personal goals all need to be considered through the lens of my health. The necessity of managing my condition means that I have to prioritize flexibility in my professional life, seeking opportunities that allow for remote work or understanding employers who accommodate health-related needs. My career ambitions are still strong, but they are now tempered with the understanding that my health must come first. This condition has also instilled a sense of purpose in my future endeavors. I am more determined to advocate for awareness and understanding of mast cell diseases, both within the medical community and the broader public. This advocacy could take many forms, from participating in research and support groups to using my experiences to educate others. By sharing my journey, I hope to contribute to a future where those with mast cell diseases are better understood and supported. In conclusion, mast cell disease has profoundly affected my life, influencing not only my physical health but also my emotional well-being, family dynamics, and future aspirations. While the journey is challenging, it has also brought about personal growth, strengthened relationships, and a renewed sense of purpose.
    GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's album GUTS that resonates deeply with my experience as a high school senior is from the song "Teenage Dream": “They all say that it gets better, it gets better the more you grow. Yeah, they all say that it gets better, it gets better, but what if I don’t?” This lyric captures the raw uncertainty and anxiety that often accompany adolescence, especially during the pivotal transition from high school to adulthood. As a senior, I find myself at a crossroads, where the expectations to figure out my future and become someone successful weigh heavily on me. Everyone around me—parents, teachers, and peers—assures me that life will fall into place as I grow older, that the pressures of today will fade, and that I’ll eventually find my path. But this lyric speaks to the fear that maybe, despite all these assurances, things won’t automatically improve, and I might not become the person I hope to be. The essence of adolescence is encapsulated in this feeling of doubt. It’s a time when we are expected to have answers, to make decisions that will shape the rest of our lives, yet we are still grappling with our identities and understanding our place in the world. Rodrigo’s lyric resonates because it acknowledges that the process of growing up is not always linear or guaranteed to bring clarity. Sometimes, instead of feeling more certain, the pressure to grow and succeed can make the future feel even more daunting. The lyric also touches on the theme of perfectionism that many teenagers, including myself, struggle with. There’s a pervasive belief that by a certain age, we should have it all figured out, and that if we don’t, we’ve somehow failed. This creates a fear of stagnation, of not progressing in the way that’s expected. The lyric speaks to this anxiety and the realization that growing up doesn’t automatically bring the answers we seek. Ultimately, Rodrigo’s lyric captures the tension between societal expectations and personal doubt, a defining feature of the teenage experience. It reminds us that it’s okay to feel lost, and that the journey of growing up is as much about confronting these uncertainties as it is about finding our way. As I stand on the brink of adulthood, this lyric resonates as a reminder that it’s normal to feel unsure, and that uncertainty is a natural part of the growth process.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
I’m a fan of LeBron James not just because of his incredible talent on the basketball court, but because of his character, work ethic, and impact off the court. LeBron's dedication to the game, his ability to consistently perform at an elite level, and his versatility in playing multiple positions make him a standout athlete. Beyond his physical abilities, what I admire most is his leadership and commitment to making a positive difference in society. LeBron has used his platform to advocate for social justice, education, and community development, such as through his I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, which provides education and support to at-risk youth. Whether LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time is a subject of intense debate. While some argue that Michael Jordan holds that title due to his six NBA championships and perfect Finals record, LeBron’s case is compelling. His longevity, ability to dominate in different eras of the NBA, and his success in taking multiple teams to championships are remarkable. He is also known for his basketball IQ, passing ability, and versatility, making him a player who can influence the game in more ways than scoring alone. Ultimately, whether LeBron is the greatest of all time (GOAT) depends on what one values most in a player—championships, individual stats, or impact on and off the court. For me, LeBron’s combination of athletic prowess, leadership, and social impact makes him one of the greatest, if not the greatest, basketball players ever.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Watching my grandfather experience mental health challenges and suffer from dementia has been a deeply transformative experience that has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. His journey through dementia was not just a test of his strength but also a pivotal chapter in my life, one that has had lasting impacts on who I am and who I strive to become. My grandfather was a pillar of strength and wisdom in our family. He was someone I looked up to, someone whose stories and experiences offered me guidance and comfort. However, as dementia slowly took hold of him, I witnessed the gradual erosion of the man I once knew. This process was heartbreaking and disorienting, as the person who had once been so vital and full of life became increasingly trapped in a world of confusion and memory loss. Watching him struggle with his mental health, losing the ability to remember loved ones and engage in the activities he once cherished, was profoundly difficult. This experience has significantly shaped my goals, particularly my desire to make a difference in the field of mental health and elderly care. I realized that mental health, especially conditions like dementia, is often misunderstood and inadequately addressed in society. Witnessing my grandfather's struggles highlighted the need for more compassionate, informed, and effective care for those dealing with similar conditions. It fueled my passion for advocating for better mental health resources and support systems, particularly for the elderly, who are often marginalized in conversations about mental health. One of the most important lessons I learned from my grandfather's experience was the value of patience and empathy. Dementia is a condition that requires those around the patient to adapt continuously, to find new ways to connect and communicate as the disease progresses. This taught me the importance of meeting people where they are, understanding their needs, and offering support that is both compassionate and patient. It also made me more aware of the challenges caregivers face, further deepening my respect and admiration for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. My relationships have also been deeply affected by this experience. Watching my grandfather's condition worsen brought our family closer together, as we rallied to provide him with the best care and support possible. It reinforced the importance of family bonds and the need to be there for one another, especially during difficult times. I became more attuned to the emotional needs of those around me, recognizing that everyone carries their own burdens, often silently. This awareness has made me a more empathetic friend, sibling, and community member, always striving to offer support and understanding to those in need. In addition to deepening my empathy, my grandfather's journey with dementia also reshaped my understanding of the world and the human condition. Dementia is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the impermanence of our memories and experiences. It forced me to confront the reality that our time with our loved ones is finite and that the moments we share are precious. This realization has motivated me to live more fully in the present, to cherish the relationships and experiences I have, and to prioritize what truly matters in life—love, connection, and the well-being of those I care about. Moreover, watching my grandfather's mental decline underscored the importance of mental health awareness and the need for societal change in how we approach aging and cognitive decline. There is still a significant stigma surrounding mental health issues, particularly in the elderly, and too often, these conditions are overlooked or dismissed as a natural part of aging. My grandfather's experience has inspired me to be an advocate for change, to push for greater awareness, research, and resources dedicated to mental health and dementia care. I want to contribute to a world where people like my grandfather can receive the care, dignity, and respect they deserve as they navigate the challenges of mental illness. In conclusion, my experience watching my grandfather suffer from dementia has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. It has instilled in me a deep compassion for those facing mental health challenges, a commitment to advocating for better care and support, and a renewed appreciation for the importance of empathy, patience, and human connection. His journey has left an indelible mark on my life, guiding me toward a path of service, advocacy, and a deeper understanding of the complexities of the human experience. I am determined to honor his legacy by working to improve the lives of others facing similar struggles, ensuring that they, too, are met with the compassion, care, and respect they deserve.

Vegan Teens Are The Future Scholarship
Deciding to become a vegan was a transformative choice rooted in a confluence of personal values, ethical considerations, and a desire for a healthier lifestyle. My journey towards veganism began with a deep reflection on the impact of my food choices on animals, the environment, and my overall well-being. Understanding the ethical implications of factory farming and the environmental degradation caused by animal agriculture, I realized that adopting a vegan lifestyle aligned with my commitment to compassion and sustainability. The decision to embrace veganism was driven by several key factors. Firstly, I became increasingly aware of the animal welfare issues associated with the meat and dairy industries. Witnessing the conditions in which animals are raised and processed sparked a profound sense of responsibility to choose a path that minimizes harm and respects animal life. This realization was coupled with an understanding of the broader environmental impacts of animal agriculture, including deforestation, water usage, and greenhouse gas emissions. By adopting a vegan lifestyle, I aimed to reduce my ecological footprint and contribute to the preservation of our planet for future generations. In addition to ethical and environmental motivations, I also sought to improve my personal health. Research into the health benefits of a plant-based diet revealed that veganism can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Embracing a vegan diet allowed me to explore a wide variety of plant-based foods and nutrients, leading to a greater sense of vitality and well-being. Veganism is important to me because it represents a holistic approach to living in alignment with my values. It embodies a commitment to kindness, sustainability, and self-care. This lifestyle choice reflects my desire to be an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves and to contribute positively to the world through my everyday actions. Looking towards the future, my dreams and plans involve leveraging my education and experiences to advance the vegan movement, particularly through my passion for baking. I am driven by the vision of creating a successful vegan baking business that not only provides delicious and innovative plant-based treats but also serves as a platform for education and advocacy. My baking business will be more than just a commercial endeavor; it will also be a vehicle for promoting veganism and raising awareness about its benefits. I plan to use my business to demonstrate that vegan desserts can be just as indulgent and satisfying as their traditional counterparts, helping to dispel myths and misconceptions about plant-based eating. By crafting delectable, cruelty-free confections, I aim to show that ethical and sustainable choices can also be enjoyable and accessible. My business will incorporate educational initiatives. I envision hosting workshops, cooking classes, and community events to share knowledge about veganism and provide practical guidance for those interested in making the transition. By fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, I hope to inspire others to explore veganism and embrace a more compassionate lifestyle. Furthermore, I plan to collaborate with local organizations and initiatives that align with my values, such as animal rights groups and environmental advocacy organizations. This will help and contribute to broader efforts in promoting veganism. In conclusion, my decision to become a vegan reflects a deep-seated commitment to ethical living, environmental stewardship, and personal health. Through my baking business, I aspire to advance the vegan movement by providing delicious plant-based options, educating the public, and fostering a greater understanding of the benefits of a vegan lifestyle. By integrating my passion for baking with my dedication to veganism, I hope to make a meaningful contribution to a more compassionate and sustainable world.
