My life goals are rooted in my desire to uplift others, advocate for those whose voices are often unheard, and create meaningful change in underserved communities. As a social work major, I am passionate about promoting social justice, mental health awareness, and equitable access to resources. I believe everyone deserves support and opportunity, no matter their background or circumstances. What truly drives me is service. I volunteer regularly because I find purpose in helping others—whether it's mentoring youth, organizing food drives, or supporting local shelters. My commitment to community service aligns with the core values of my fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, which emphasizes Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. Being a member of this brotherhood has deepened my commitment to making a difference, not just through words but through consistent action. I believe I am a strong candidate because I lead with heart, humility, and a clear vision. My academic journey has taught me resilience, and my experiences—both in and out of the classroom—have shaped me into a compassionate, responsible, and driven individual. I am not only pursuing a degree—I am preparing to become a voice for change, a source of support, and a dedicated professional in the field of social work. Receiving support through this opportunity would allow me to continue building toward these goals without financial hardship. It would also validate the hard work I’ve put in and affirm the path I’ve chosen—a path dedicated to service, leadership, and making a real difference in people’s lives.

Growing up in a single-parent household has profoundly shaped my goals, values, and ambitions. Raised by my mother, who worked tirelessly to support me and my siblings, I experienced both the challenges and rewards of a life marked by resilience, hard work, and limited resources. These formative years instilled in me a deep sense of empathy, responsibility, and a commitment to service—values that continue to guide me as I pursue a degree in social work. One of the most significant lessons I learned from my childhood was the importance of resilience. My mother worked multiple jobs to provide for our family, and although there were times when we struggled financially, she never let us feel the full weight of those challenges. I remember days when we didn’t know where our next meal would come from or when we faced housing instability. Yet, my mother remained a pillar of strength, always finding a way to make it through. Her ability to persevere through hardship taught me that no matter the obstacles, there is always a way forward if you are determined and resourceful. As the oldest child, I naturally took on responsibilities that came with being a caregiver. I discovered early on that being there for someone, whether emotionally or practically, can make all the difference in their life. This experience was my first introduction to social work, as it taught me that sometimes the most impactful help is simply providing a steady presence during difficult times. My experience in a single-parent household also made me acutely aware of the financial and emotional struggles that many families face. Watching my mother juggle multiple jobs while managing household responsibilities showed me how difficult it can be to make ends meet when resources are limited. I became passionate about social justice because I realized how systemic barriers like poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and limited educational opportunities can create cycles of disadvantage. This realization led me to pursue social work as a career, where I can help break those cycles and advocate for the resources and support that families need to thrive. My goal is to work directly with individuals and families facing economic hardships and mental health challenges, ensuring they have access to the tools and services that can help them achieve stability and success. Growing up in a disadvantaged household also taught me the importance of community. Although we didn’t always have financial resources, we were rich in the support of extended family, friends, and neighbors. I saw firsthand how crucial it is to have a network of people who can provide help, whether through shared resources, emotional support, or practical assistance. As a social worker, I believe in the power of community and the importance of creating strong support systems for individuals and families. My goal is not just to provide direct services but to help build networks of care, so people can access the support they need to navigate life’s challenges. These experiences have also shaped my ambition to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and work specifically with at-risk youth and families in underserved communities. I want to be a source of guidance and support for families who are dealing with mental health struggles, trauma, or economic hardship—issues that are often compounded by a lack of resources or access to care. I know from my own experience that the absence of support can make it difficult to overcome challenges, and I want to be part of a solution that helps families heal, thrive, and build a better future. The values I learned growing up—resilience, empathy, responsibility, and community—are the foundation of my passion for social work. I am committed to using my experiences and education to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most, just as I was supported when my family needed it.
    WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
My greatest achievement to date has been managing my academic responsibilities, caregiving duties, and community involvement, all while remaining dedicated to my goal of becoming a social worker. As a first-generation college student from a single-parent household, I’ve had to navigate significant challenges. My role as a caregiver for my younger siblings, while supporting my mother, has required me to juggle numerous responsibilities alongside my academic commitments. Despite these demands, I’ve not only maintained a strong academic record but also become actively involved in community service and leadership through my involvement in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Being the eldest child, I naturally took on the role of helping my mother care for my siblings. This has included cooking meals, assisting with schoolwork, managing household tasks, and providing emotional support to my family. Balancing these responsibilities with my studies and part-time work has been demanding, but it has also been one of my greatest sources of pride. In many ways, this experience has reinforced my passion for social work and deepened my commitment to pursuing a career in helping others. This experience has taught me a great deal about myself. It has also taught me the value of empathy and service. As I’ve cared for my family, I’ve come to realize how essential it is to have access to resources and support systems that help people navigate life’s difficulties. This realization has motivated me to pursue social work because I want to be part of the solution, helping individuals and families access the resources and emotional support they need during challenging times. In addition to my caregiving responsibilities, my involvement with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has reinforced the importance of service and leadership. Through the fraternity, I’ve participated in various community service projects, such as mentoring youth, organizing food drives, and supporting mental health awareness initiatives. I am particularly passionate about working with marginalized communities, where systemic barriers often prevent individuals from accessing critical resources and support. Looking ahead, I plan to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and work directly with at-risk youth and families in underserved communities. My goal is to advocate for individuals facing mental health struggles, trauma, and socioeconomic challenges, and provide them with the tools and support they need to improve their lives. I hope to create a space where people feel heard, supported, and empowered to overcome their struggles. Receiving a scholarship would play a critical role in helping me achieve these goals. Financial strain has been a constant challenge as I work to balance school, caregiving, and part-time employment. This scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to reduce my dependence on working long hours, allowing me to dedicate more time to my studies, internships, and fieldwork. It would allow me to engage more fully with my academic and professional development without the added pressure of financial stress. Ultimately, my greatest achievement is not just about managing responsibilities but about using my life experiences to fuel my passion for social work. It has shaped me into someone who is resilient, compassionate, and driven to make a difference. I am committed to using my education and skills to help individuals, families, and communities facing hardship, and this scholarship would be instrumental in making that possible.
    Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
As the oldest child in a single-parent household, I have taken on the responsibility of caring for my younger siblings while supporting my mother, who works tirelessly to keep our family afloat. My role as a caregiver involves more than just household chores—I cook meals, help with homework, manage our daily schedule, and provide emotional support. I’ve also helped manage bills, coordinate transportation, and handle responsibilities many of my age might not face. This daily caregiving has taught me how to be patient, responsible, and selfless. It’s shown me the challenges that families face when resources are limited and how easily people can fall through the cracks of systems that are meant to support them. These firsthand experiences have been the driving force behind my decision to major in social work. I’ve seen how important it is for families to have someone who listens and truly understands their situation. I want to be that person for others—the social worker who advocates, supports, and empowers individuals to overcome their challenges. Being a caregiver has also shaped how I approach life. I’ve learned to prioritize the needs of others without losing sight of my aspirations. It has made me more disciplined, compassionate, and resilient. Balancing caregiving, school, and part-time work has never been easy, but it has made me more determined to succeed. I know that my ability to manage these responsibilities while maintaining strong academic performance is not just a personal achievement—it is proof that I have what it takes to succeed in a demanding and impactful profession like social work. In addition to caregiving, I am an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., an organization that upholds the values of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. Through the fraternity, I have had opportunities to serve my community in meaningful ways—from organizing food drives and mentorship programs to volunteering at shelters and participating in youth outreach initiatives. These experiences have deepened my commitment to service and strengthened my belief in the importance of community support. They also reinforce why I chose social work: because I want to be an agent of change both in individual lives and in the systems that serve them. Right now, finances are one of the biggest barriers I face. Despite working part-time, it’s difficult to cover tuition, books, transportation, and basic living expenses while still supporting my family. Often, I have to make tough choices between school-related expenses and family needs. This scholarship would ease that financial pressure, allowing me to focus more fully on my education, internships, and professional development. It would also give me more flexibility to engage in meaningful volunteer work and caregiving without sacrificing academic progress. Most importantly, this scholarship would represent an investment in my future—and in the futures of the people I will serve as a social worker. I am committed to using my education to support vulnerable populations, advocate for systemic change, and provide compassionate care to those in need. In everything I do, I carry the values of service, resilience, and compassion. This scholarship would help ensure that I can continue on this path without the constant burden of financial worry.
    Arnetha V. Bishop Memorial Scholarship
As a senior social work student and proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., my journey has been rooted in service, advocacy, and a deep commitment to uplifting marginalized communities. My passion for mental health and community healing is not just a professional goal—it’s a personal mission shaped by my lived experiences, academic growth, and ongoing community involvement. Growing up, I witnessed how mental health issues often went unaddressed in my community. I saw friends and family members struggle in silence, not because they didn’t need help, but because they lacked access to it—or didn’t feel safe seeking it. Cultural stigma, lack of resources, and systemic inequities created barriers that many never overcame. These early experiences planted the seed for my passion for mental health advocacy. As I progressed through my studies in social work, I began to understand these challenges not just as individual struggles but as part of a larger, deeply rooted social injustice. Through my coursework and field experiences, I’ve developed a strong foundation in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, and culturally competent practice. However, beyond the classroom, it’s been my involvement in community service that has truly shaped my approach. Whether organizing food drives, mentoring youth, or supporting local outreach programs, I’ve seen how essential it is to meet people where they are, listen to their stories, and build trust before anything else. These moments reaffirm my belief that healing doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in community. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has also played a critical role in shaping my identity as a servant leader. Our motto, “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity,” isn’t just words—it’s a way of life. Through the fraternity, I’ve stood alongside brothers who share a passion for social justice, mental health awareness, and educational empowerment. These experiences have not only strengthened my leadership skills but have also deepened my understanding of the unique needs facing Black and Brown communities today. My goal is to become a licensed clinical social worker specializing in mental health. This space will offer accessible, culturally affirming therapy and support services. I envision a center where mental health care is paired with mentorship, youth empowerment programs, support groups, and educational workshops—creating a holistic environment for growth and healing. Ultimately, I believe mental health should be seen not as a privilege but as a right. Everyone deserves the chance to heal, to be heard, and to thrive. I want to be part of the movement that dismantles stigma, builds access, and redefines what support looks like in our communities. My experiences—as a student, a brother of Phi Beta Sigma, and a community servant—have all led me to this purpose. I am committed to continuing this work, not just in my career, but in every space I enter.
    Michael Pride, Jr/ProjectEX Memorial Scholarship
Serving my community has never been an occasional act; it is a way of life that I have chosen to embody in everything I do. One of the most impactful humanitarian efforts I have led was a Christmas toy drive through the respected fraternity of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. This organization, founded on the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service, has provided me with a platform to create tangible changes in the lives of others, especially during the holiday season when many families are in greatest need. During the toy drive, I collaborated with fraternity brothers, local businesses, and community leaders to collect and distribute toys to underprivileged children. The smiles on the children’s faces and the heartfelt gratitude from parents reminded me why I do this work. It was about more than gifts; it was about restoring hope, spreading joy, and showing families that their community cares about them. Organizing the logistics, reaching out for donations, and coordinating volunteers all required dedication, planning, and heart—skills I intend to continue developing throughout my life. This experience reinforced my belief that service is not a one-time act but an ongoing responsibility. That’s why my educational goals are deeply intertwined with my mission to uplift my community. I am pursuing my degree to enhance not only my personal growth but also my ability to serve on a larger scale. Education provides me with the tools to lead effectively, communicate clearly, and strategize long-term solutions to social challenges. I am particularly passionate about community development and youth outreach. With my education, I plan to create mentorship programs for young men, specifically those from underserved communities who may lack positive role models. I believe that with the right guidance, encouragement, and resources, we can help shape the next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers. Additionally, my academic journey has enabled me to build strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for identifying the root causes of issues facing our communities—whether it’s poverty, educational inequity, or lack of access to healthcare—and finding sustainable ways to address them. I also hope to one day establish a non-profit organization focused on year-round youth enrichment, where I can combine everything I have learned academically with my passion for community service. The foundation of my service lies in the values instilled in me by Phi Beta Sigma and strengthened through my educational endeavors. I envision a future where I am a servant leader who continues to give back in meaningful ways—whether through organizing drives, mentoring youth, or leading community initiatives that create lasting change. In all that I do, I am guided by the belief that we rise by lifting others. With the combination of my service experience and educational goals, I am fully committed to lifting as I climb.
