Witnessing a loved one face cancer at a young age shaped my understanding of resilience, compassion, and the vital role of nurses in supporting patients and families. Since I was a young girl, I have always known that I wanted to become a nurse. My interest in nursing grew even stronger after experiencing the impact of cancer in my life, which shaped how I view empathy, strength, and the power of human connection in healthcare.
In 2023, one of my closest friends, Ceyani, was diagnosed with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. She was only twenty-one years old, full of life, and had so many dreams ahead of her. Over the next two years, I witnessed her fight an unimaginable battle with courage and grace. We often discussed her experiences during treatment—her fears, her pain, and her moments of hope. What stood out most were the stories she shared about her nurses. She often spoke about how much they supported her, lifted her spirits when she felt hopeless, and provided comfort when she needed it most. Observing this made me realize how vital nurses are in the lives of patients and families navigating cancer.
When Ceyani passed away in August of this year, just two months after her twenty-second birthday, I was devastated. But amid my grief, I found a deeper sense of purpose. I realized that I wanted to be the kind of nurse who not only provides excellent medical care, but also offers empathy, emotional support, and reassurance to patients and their families. This experience strengthened my determination to pursue a career in pediatric oncology nursing, where compassion, resilience, and medical skill intersect every day.
As a nursing student, I have focused on developing the skills and qualities that will allow me to excel in this field. I have cultivated empathy, patience, and trustworthiness while learning to communicate effectively with patients and families under stress. Clinical experiences have taught me how to manage challenging situations calmly and provide holistic care that addresses both physical and emotional needs. I strive every day to grow into a nurse who can offer strength, hope, and dignity to patients facing serious illnesses like cancer.
Cancer has profoundly impacted my life by showing me the importance of resilience, compassion, and the support networks that patients rely on. It has motivated me to dedicate my career to helping children and families navigate the most difficult times of their lives with understanding and care. This scholarship represents an opportunity to continue pursuing my education in nursing while honoring those affected by cancer, like Ceyani, by turning personal loss into meaningful action and service.
I am confident that my dedication, compassion, and drive align with the mission of the Peter J. Musto Memorial Scholarship. Receiving this award would allow me to focus more fully on my studies and clinical training while continuing to grow into a nurse capable of making a lasting impact on the lives of patients and families affected by cancer. I am committed to using my education and future career to provide comfort, care, and hope to those who need it most.
Penny Nelk Nursing Scholarship
My interest in nursing began early in my life. In 2007, when I was three years old, my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Growing up alongside her illness gave me early exposure to healthcare settings and helped shape my understanding of patient care, resilience, and service.
As I got older, I became more aware of the challenges my mother faced while managing a chronic condition. Periods of worsening symptoms and frequent medical visits became familiar experiences. Throughout this time, nurses played a significant role in her care. They consistently provided skilled clinical support while also offering education, reassurance, and advocacy. Their professionalism and compassion left a lasting impression on me and highlighted the essential role nurses play within the healthcare system.
What stood out most was how nurses balanced medical expertise with patient-centered care. They communicated clearly, supported my mother through difficult moments, and treated her with dignity and respect. Observing this approach helped me recognize that nursing is a profession built on both competence and compassion. These experiences directly shaped my decision to pursue nursing as a career.
As I continued my education, my interest in nursing became more focused and intentional. I was drawn to the opportunity to work directly with patients, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and make a meaningful impact through hands-on care. My mother’s experience reinforced the importance of consistent, knowledgeable nursing care, particularly for individuals living with chronic illnesses. As a future nurse, I aim to provide reliable, patient-centered care that supports both physical health and long-term quality of life.
Pursuing a nursing degree has required dedication, discipline, and perseverance. Nursing school is demanding, but it has strengthened my drive and confirmed my commitment to this profession. I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute positively to patient outcomes and to be part of a field that is vital to the health and well-being of communities.
Receiving the Penny Nelk Nursing Scholarship would be both an honor and a meaningful investment in my nursing education. This scholarship represents support for students who are committed to upholding the values of the nursing profession—service, compassion, and responsibility. Financial assistance from this award would allow me to remain focused on my academic and clinical training while continuing to develop the skills necessary to become a competent and compassionate nurse.
Inspired by early experiences with nursing care and driven by a strong commitment to service, I am determined to make a positive and lasting impact on my patients, their families, and the healthcare system as a whole.
