Reimagining Education Scholarship
If I could create a class that all students from K-12 were required to take, it would be called: There is Always a Way: Overcoming Challenges. This class would be about focusing on teaching students how to face difficulties with strength, creativity, and resilience. Because life is full of obstacles, being big or small and I believe it is important for young people to learn early on that no matter what happens, there is always a way forward and that they just need to keep pushing.
In this class, students would learn skills like problem-solving, managing emotions, staying calm under pressure, and thinking outside the box when faced with tough situations. They would hear stories of real people who overcame hard times, as well as have the chance to reflect on and share their own struggles and successes. Activities might include group challenges, where students work together to solve problems, and journaling exercises to help them process setbacks and plan ways to move forward.
I believe that the impact of this class would be powerful. Because it would help students develop problem-solving skills. For example Instead of giving up when something gets hard like a tough math problem, a fight with a friend, or struggles at home they would keeping pushing and not let it bring then down. This class would teach them how to break the problem into smaller parts and figure out what they *can* do. They would start to see challenges not as dead ends but as opportunities to grow and learn. With this call It would also help students build resilience. Because many young people face difficult circumstances, like family issues, bullying, or self-doubt. This class would show them that while life is not always easy, they are strong enough to keep going and find solutions. Because when a student is Resilient they are more likely to succeed in school and in life because they wouldn't give up when things get tough instead they would keep trying. This class would also help to create a more supportive school environment. Because students would learn not only to overcome their own struggles but also to support others when they are having a hard time. By practicing empathy and teamwork, they would help create a community where everyone feels valued and capable.
In conclusion, the class: There is Always a Way: Overcoming Challenges. It would teach students that no matter what challenges they face, they have the power to overcome them. It would give them tools to solve problems, stay strong, and help others do the same. I believe this kind of class could truly change lives.

My name is Destini Perry-Roberson, and I am a 19-year-old college junior majoring in education at Prairie view A&M University with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. I spend my free time doing things like reading, writing, and listening to music, because they allow me to express myself, escape from reality and into different worlds. I live with my mom and 2 little sisters. I have a dream of becoming an elementary school teacher because I believe that teachers play one of the most important roles in shaping the future.
Growing up in a single-mother household has had a lot of impact on my life. My mother who I spent my life watching working tirelessly to provide for me and my 2 little sisters and struggling to make sure we had everything we needed and even the things we wanted. Through all of this my mother has taught me the importance of perseverance, kindness, and hard work. Because watching her overcome challenges and never giving up and continuing to be strong has taught me to keep my head up even when life gets difficult. Her example showed me that there is always a way forward, even when things seem impossible. This experience shaped how I perceive the world and it has taught me resilience, in finding solutions rather than giving up, and in seeing every obstacle as an opportunity to grow. Living in a single-parent household with only my mom it has also helped me develop empathy for others, as I understand that everyone carries their own struggles and deserves patience and understanding.
I plan to make a positive impact on the world through my goal of being a teacher. Because with my love for education and my experiences growing up it has motivated me to become a positive influence on the world. I want to be the kind of teacher who inspires her students to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, no matter their circumstances. Teachers have the power to guide children not just academically but also emotionally, helping them grow into confident, kind, and capable adults. I believe that by nurturing young minds and teaching children how to be future leaders, I can make a meaningful difference in the world. Through teaching, I hope to create a classroom where every child feels valued and supported, just as my mother did for me. I want to encourage my students to see challenges as chances to learn and grow, to never give up on themselves, and to believe that anything is possible with effort and determination. Becoming a teacher is not just my career goal but also my way of giving back to the world and helping shape a brighter future, one child at a time and making a lasting impact on the world.

What truly inspires me about Harriet Tubman is her unwavering commitment to justice and equality and that she never gave up in in the face of adversity. Even after securing her own freedom, Tubman continued to fight tirelessly for the liberation of others. She became a leading figure in the abolitionist movement, using her firsthand knowledge of the horrors of slavery to advocate for its abolition. Jeanne Kramme Fouke Scholarship for Future Teachers
In the intricate tapestry of our lives, teachers often emerge as pivotal figures, weaving threads of knowledge, inspiration, and sometimes, frustration. For me, the decision to pursue a career in teaching stems from a deeply personal journey marked by encounters with both exceptional and disappointing teachers. Each experience left an indelible mark on me as a person, shaping not only my perception of education but also igniting a fervent desire to make a positive difference in the lives of the younger generation.
From the outset, I was fortunate to encounter teachers whose passion for teaching was visible, their dedication unwavering. These were the perfect example of an exceptional teacher, whose classrooms were sanctuaries of learning, brimming with enthusiasm and intellectual curiosity. They possessed the ability to be able to kindle flames of inspiration in the minds of me and all their students, fostering a love for learning that transcended To wanting to do the same thinning they did for me and other students for the future generation of students to come
One such teacher stands out in my memory as being an exceptional teacher. Was my 2nd-grade teacher who was also my 4th-grade teacher, with boundless energy and genuine warmth, they transformed mundane lessons into captivating odysseys of discovery. Their approach was not merely about disseminating information but rather fostering critical thinking, creativity, and empathy. Under their tutelage, I not only mastered academic concepts but also imbibed invaluable life lessons about resilience, perseverance, and the power of kindness.
Conversely, amidst the sea of exemplary teachers, there were those whose incompetence or indifference cast a shadow over the educational landscape. These were the disillusioning figures whose classrooms exuded a visible sense of lack of interest, where rote memorization took precedence over genuine understanding, and students were treated as passive recipients of information rather than active participants in their own learning journey.
I vividly recall a particular teacher whose lackluster teaching style and disdain for student inquiries sowed seeds of disillusionment within me. They were my sophomore English teacher. Their rigid adherence to teaching and answering questions stifled curiosity and hindered intellectual growth, leaving me feeling disengaged and uninspired. It was a disheartening experience that underscored the profound impact teachers wield in shaping the academic trajectory and self-esteem of their students.
Reflecting on these formative experiences, I am acutely aware of the profound responsibility inherent in the role of an educator. My decision to pursue a career in teaching is not merely a profession but a vocation—an unwavering commitment to uphold the principles of excellence, empathy, and equity in education.
Drawing inspiration from the exemplary teachers who left an indelible imprint on my life, I aspire to emulate their passion, dedication, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. I endeavor to create inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued, empowered, and capable of realizing their full potential.
Moreover, the shortcomings exhibited by less effective teachers serve as cautionary tales, reminding me of the importance of continual self-reflection, professional growth, and adaptability in the ever-evolving landscape of education. I am determined to embrace innovative pedagogical approaches.
In conclusion, my journey toward a career in teaching has been shaped by a tapestry of experiences—both positive and negative—that have imbued me with a profound appreciation for the transformative power of education. Guided by the exemplary teachers who instilled in me a love for learning and propelled by a fervent desire to mitigate the shortcomings of less effective teachers, I plan to embark on this noble profession with unwavering dedication and a steadfast commitment to fostering a brighter future for generations to come.
