Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Destiney Grace Jenkins. I am 19 years old and a graduating senior with a GPA of 3.12, and my class rank is 30 out of 65. I have an IEP for attention deficit of a different kind, which has taught me perseverance, patience, and how to advocate for myself. I am the granddaughter of Connie Jenkins. I have a brother who is 17, and he also goes to Salina. We lost our mother in 2015, and that experience has shaped me into a stronger and more compassionate person.
I have been enrolled in Salina Public Schools since 1st grade. Through determination and support from my family and teachers, I have stayed focused on my goals and continued to grow academically and personally. With determination and help, I will go to college. I want to go into education to teach Pre-K through 2nd grade so I can help young students learn and become successful people in the future. I believe that people become who they are at an early age because they are more willing to learn and absorb the world around them.
I am currently working with Pre-K students at Salina School to gain experience. I have been working there for over a year through a work-study program. During this time, I have learned how to support students with different learning styles, show patience, and build positive relationships. I have also been studying Cherokee for four years. While I am not yet fluent, I am committed to continuing my learning so I can help preserve and share my culture with future generations.
I have fallen in love with working with students and have developed a true passion for helping them succeed. I have wanted to work with children since I was in 5th grade and have been inspired by the teachers in my immediate family. In addition, I have been involved in athletics since elementary school and have excelled in archery.
I plan to attend Connors State College, where I have been offered an archery scholarship. It is a two-year college located in Warner, Oklahoma, and I believe it will be the perfect starting point for my educational journey. While in college, I plan to continue gaining classroom experience and building the skills needed to become an effective and caring teacher. I am especially passionate about creating a positive and encouraging learning environment where all students feel valued and supported.
I wish to thank each of you for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship. I understand that many deserving students are applying, and I am truly grateful for your time and consideration. With a humble heart, I pray and ask my Lord for guidance and direction in all of my decisions. God bless each of you.
Sincerely-
Destiney Jenkins

My Special Education program inspired me to pursue higher education and certification training by shifting my focus from what I couldn't do to how I can learn best. The program taught me that my struggle wasn't a lack of intelligence, but a need for a different approach. Learning to use tailored techniques such as visual aids, specialized time management proved that I could master complex material. Seeing the dedication of a teacher who believed in me made me want to help others overcome similar barriers. This sparked a desire to obtain certification in areas like special education, advocacy, or support services to help other students navigate the education system. I was used to academic struggles, I learned early on that success is not linear. I learned to celebrate small victories, such as finishing a difficult task or staying focused for a set period, which taught me to value progress over perfection. Dealing with setbacks, such as failing a test despite hard work, taught me to re-evaluate my strategies rather than giving up. This experience forced me to reach out for support, get tutors, and seek out new ways to learn, ultimately resulting in greater academic success. Facing challenges like stigma or feeling "misunderstood" taught me to be patient and understanding of others’ hidden struggles. This has made me a stronger advocate for inclusivity and a better team player in school and professional settings. In summary, the difficulties in my life taught me how to harness my unique strengths to build a purposeful career and navigate a challenging world with confidence. I want to become a teacher so I can help the younger generation with the same problems I had and still do. I want to be a Pre K teacher so that I can help them be better people and look at others the same way as I do. I see good in every one even if they do wrong to me or another person. I got a scholarship for archery and I'm hoping I can get more to help me presume my career. I want to be a better person for me and others around me my life has been hard but I keep on going I lost my mother at the age of 8 and my father was never in my life my grandmother took care of me but I'm taking care of her she is 70 and not in good health. My GPA of 3.12, and my class rank is 30 out of 62. I have an IEP for attention deficit of a different kind, which has taught me perseverance, patience, and how to advocate for myself. There was a girl who was getting into trouble at school because she did not want to play with the other kids it turned out she was in a special needs class. She had trouble looking people in the eyes and did not like to talk the kids called her names and ran away from her all the time. One day I was outside sitting by myself and seen her all by her self so I went up to her and I realized that she was different but I did not care I started talking to her and asked if she wanted to go play she did not want to so I just sat there with her but after a few days she started talking to me. and we became friends the other kids started to be nice to her too and she began talking to them.
