Education should never depend on how much money a family has or what circumstances a student was born into. Every young person deserves the chance to learn, grow, and build a future, regardless of the challenges standing in their way. Yet for many students, financial hardship, unstable family situations, or a lack of resources make even the basic tools of success, like tutoring, school supplies, or a quiet place to study, difficult to access. Scholarships and grants exist to close that gap, and I believe they should go to students who have shown they will use that opportunity to its fullest. I know this struggle firsthand. I have had to change colleges more than once because my family could not cover an outstanding balance, and each time it meant starting over and losing ground I had already worked hard to gain. Right now, I am waiting until spring 2027 to begin school again, hoping that by then I will actually be able to afford to attend. That waiting period is not easy. It means watching time pass while wanting nothing more than to already be moving forward, and it means constantly worrying about whether money will get in the way again. Despite this, I have stayed focused on my education because I understand what it can do for my future. I want to become a doctor, a goal that requires years of rigorous coursework, testing, and financial investment long before I ever set foot in a hospital. Rather than waiting passively, I have taken initiative to earn college credit early so that I am ready the moment I can enroll, refusing to let this delay set me back any further than it already has. This grant would not just ease a financial burden. It would remove one more obstacle standing between where I am now and where I am capable of going. Support like this allows students like me to spend our energy on studying and growing instead of constantly worrying about how to afford the next step. I believe motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds deserve these opportunities because our effort has already proven itself under harder conditions than many of our peers face. We are not asking for a shortcut. We are asking for the same starting line that others were given without having to fight for it. Given the chance, I intend to make the most of every dollar and every opportunity this grant provides.

My story starts long before I did. My family has spent generations working twice as hard for half the recognition, watching doors open more easily for others simply because of the color of their skin. Growing up, I saw how that reality shaped everything: which neighborhoods we could afford to live in, which schools we had access to, and how far a dollar could stretch when opportunities were already limited before we even walked through the door. Financial struggle wasn’t just about money. It was about constantly having to prove we belonged in spaces that weren’t built with us in mind. That environment took a toll on my mental health long before I had the language to describe it. I carried a quiet, constant pressure to perform, to not make mistakes, to be twice as good just to be seen as equal. School became a place where I was fighting two battles: the coursework in front of me, and the exhaustion of navigating a system that wasn’t designed for someone like me to succeed easily. There were nights I didn’t know how bills would get paid, and days I sat in class wondering if any of it would matter if the odds were already stacked against me. What kept me going was watching my family refuse to give up, even when the system made it harder for us than it needed to be. That resilience is part of why I want to study psychology. I’ve lived the reality that financial hardship and racial inequity don’t just limit opportunity, they weigh directly on mental health, especially for young people who are told to be resilient without ever being given the tools or support to actually process what they’re carrying. This scholarship would remove one of the biggest barriers standing between me and that future: the financial one. Without needing to work multiple jobs just to stay enrolled, I could actually focus on my education, on internships, and on building the clinical experience I need to eventually work with young people who are navigating the same intersection of financial hardship and identity based obstacles that I did. I want to become a psychologist who understands that struggle isn’t a personal failure, but often the result of systems working exactly as they were designed, and that healing has to include acknowledging that truth rather than ignoring it. My career goal is to work directly with children and teens in underserved communities, providing mental health support that takes their full reality into account, not just their symptoms, but the financial stress, the discrimination, and the pressure of feeling like they have to overcome more just to keep up. I want to help build a future where a student’s zip code or skin color doesn’t determine the quality of support they receive. This scholarship isn’t just financial relief for me. It’s an investment in someone who understands, from lived experience, exactly what’s at stake when young people don’t get the support they need in time. I’m determined to turn what I’ve survived into something that helps the next generation survive a little easier, and eventually, thrive instead of just getting by.

Growing up, I struggled with my own mental health, and school often felt like one more place I had to survive rather than belong. There were stretches where getting through a single class period took everything I had, and no one around me seemed to notice or ask why. I spent a long time thinking that was just how things were going to be for me. What changed things was having someone finally listen without judgment. It wasn’t a dramatic intervention, just someone who paid attention, asked real questions, and made space for me to be honest about what I was going through. That relationship didn’t fix everything overnight, but it gave me something I hadn’t had before: the sense that I was seen as a whole person, not just a problem to be managed. That experience is the reason I want to study psychology. I know firsthand how much of a difference one caring, attentive adult can make in a kid’s life, and I want to become that person for other students, especially the ones who feel invisible in the classroom or like they’re falling through the cracks. Too often, kids who are struggling get labeled as difficult or unmotivated when what they actually need is someone willing to look closer. My vision is to work directly with children and teens, whether in schools, community counseling centers, or clinical settings, helping them build the tools I had to find mostly on my own. I want to help normalize conversations about mental health early, so kids don’t have to wait until they’re older to understand what they’re feeling or to ask for help. I also want to work with teachers and families, because supporting a struggling student usually takes more than one person; it takes a whole community paying attention in the right way. The people who inspire me most are the ones who show up quietly and consistently: the counselor who remembers a kid’s name and story, the teacher who notices when something is off, the mentor who doesn’t give up on a student who’s hard to reach. I don’t need to do something extraordinary to make an impact. I just need to be present in the way someone once was for me. Ultimately, I want the next struggling student to feel seen sooner than I did. Education is what will give me the training and credibility to do that work well, but the motivation comes from knowing exactly what it’s like to need that kind of support and finally receive it.

Faith has been one of the most steady, grounding forces in my life. Growing up through financial hardship, family instability, and managing a chronic illness that affected my education, there were countless moments when I did not have an obvious reason to keep pushing forward. In those moments, God gave me something to hold onto when everything else felt uncertain. My faith did not remove the hardship from my life, but it gave me the strength to keep showing up in the middle of it, even on the days when giving up would have been the easier option. There is a difference between simply surviving hard circumstances and finding meaning in them, and I believe my faith is what made that difference for me. When I faced eviction, when I struggled to balance schoolwork with taking care of my siblings, when flare ups from my chronic illness threatened my ability to graduate, I turned to God again and again. My faith reminded me that my worth was never defined by my circumstances, and that gave me the resilience to keep moving forward instead of letting those challenges define me. More than helping me personally, my faith gave me a deep motivation to help others in need. Watching my own family struggle, and relying on God to get through it, made me acutely aware of what it feels like to need support and not always know where it will come from. My faith did not let me sit comfortably with that awareness. It pushed me to want to be part of the support system for other people facing similar struggles, rather than simply moving past my own hardships and forgetting what they felt like. I believe that God gave me these experiences, and the faith to endure them, for a reason bigger than myself, and that reason is to serve others. That motivation is a large part of why I am pursuing a career in social work. I want to work directly with families experiencing instability, hardship, and struggle, the same way my own family did. My faith will not just be something I carry personally into that career. It will shape how I show up for the people I work with. I want to approach every family I work with the same compassion and patience that I believe God has shown me throughout my own struggles. I want them to feel truly seen and supported, not just processed as a case, because I understand what it feels like to need someone to actually care. My faith will also help sustain me through the difficult parts of social work itself. It is a career that will require me to sit with other people’s pain regularly, and I know from experience that faith gives me the resilience to keep showing up even when circumstances are heavy. Just as God carried me through my own hardest moments, I believe my faith will carry me through the emotional demands of this work, reminding me why I chose this path in the first place. God gave me faith, and that faith gave me the motivation to help others in need. That belief is not just a part of my story. It is the foundation for the career and the future I am building.

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from being needed in two places at once. For most of high school, I lived in that exact tension. School wanted my full attention. My family needed my hands, my time, my presence at home. And somewhere in between those two pulls, I had to figure out how to become a person who could hold both without breaking. My mother worked hard to keep our household running, but the bills never seemed to stop coming, and there were only so many hours in her day. So I stepped in where I could. Most afternoons, instead of going to club meetings or staying after school for activities I actually wanted to be part of, I went straight home to take care of my siblings. I made sure they ate. I helped with their homework. I kept the house together while my mother worked to keep us afloat financially. I did not resent them for needing me. I loved them, and I understood, even as a teenager, that showing up for my family mattered more than showing up to one more extracurricular meeting. But there were nights I sat at the kitchen table long after everyone else had gone to sleep, staring at homework I had not even started, feeling like I was being pulled apart by two responsibilities that both deserved more of me than I had to give. It affected my grades. There is no softening that truth. Assignments were rushed. Study time was almost nonexistent. I would sit in class the next day, exhausted, trying to absorb material I had barely had time to review the night before. I watched other students who had the luxury of time, students who could go home and simply be students, and I felt the weight of comparison creep in. Why did this have to be so hard for me when it seemed to come so easily for everyone else? I was not lazy. I was not incapable. I was just stretched so thin that something eventually had to give, and it was my academics that absorbed most of that strain. What carried me through those years was my faith. I leaned on God in a way I do not think I fully understood until I was in the middle of needing Him most. On nights when I felt like I could not keep up, when the exhaustion felt heavier than I could carry on my own, I prayed. Not for the situation to disappear, but for the strength to keep showing up anyway, for my siblings, for my mother, and for myself. My faith did not make the hard nights easy. It gave me something steadier to hold onto when everything else felt unstable. It reminded me that my worth was not measured by a grade on a test, even when it felt that way in the moment. Eventually, I had to find a way to work smarter, not just harder. I made it my personal mission to complete my responsibilities at home as efficiently as possible so I could reclaim whatever small pockets of time were left for schoolwork. I stopped waiting for the perfect quiet moment to study, because that moment almost never came. Instead, I learned to focus in short bursts, to finish tasks the moment I had a free ten minutes, to treat every small window of time as valuable rather than waiting for conditions that were never going to exist for me. It was not glamorous. It was not the study routine you read about in guidance counselor pamphlets. It was survival, shaped by necessity and held together by faith. Looking back, I do not think of that period of my life as simply a time when my grades suffered. I think of it as the season that taught me what real responsibility looks like. It taught me that love sometimes means sacrifice, that showing up for the people who depend on you can cost you something, and that it is still worth it. I did not get to be the student who joined every club or stayed for every event, but I became someone who understood, far earlier than most people my age, what it means to carry weight for people you love and still find a way to keep moving forward. I do not know if I would call myself the strongest student in my class, and my transcript probably reflects the toll that those years took. But I know I am someone who does not quit when things get hard, because quitting was never actually an option for me. My siblings needed me. My mother needed me. And through it all, my faith reminded me that even in the moments I felt like I was failing academically, I was not failing at what mattered most. That season did not just teach me how to manage time. It taught me who I am when everything is asking for more of me than I think I have to give.

Mental health matters to me deeply as a student because I have seen firsthand how much it shapes whether someone can actually show up for their own life, both in the classroom and outside of it. A close friend of mine went through a period of serious depression during a stretch when we were both overwhelmed with schoolwork and other pressures. At first, they tried to hide what they were going through, worried about being judged or misunderstood, and I almost missed the signs myself because they were so good at appearing fine on the surface. Once I realized what was actually happening, I made it a priority to be present without trying to immediately fix everything, to listen without judgment, and to gently encourage them to reach out for professional support rather than trying to manage it entirely on their own. Helping them find a therapist and stay consistent with treatment taught me that meaningful support does not always mean having the right words in the moment. Sometimes it simply means showing up again and again, staying patient, and reminding someone that asking for help is not a weakness. That experience reshaped how I think about mental health entirely. I stopped seeing it as something separate from everyday student life and started recognizing it as something that touches almost everyone, often silently and often invisibly, especially in high-pressure academic environments where struggling can feel like it has to be hidden. In my own community, whether at school or at home, I try to advocate for mental health through small, consistent actions rather than grand gestures. I check in on friends genuinely, asking specific questions instead of a passing “how are you,” so people feel like there is actual room to answer honestly. I encourage classmates to consider counseling or other resources without treating it as a last resort or a sign of failure. I also try to speak openly about mental health in everyday conversation, since normalizing the topic is often the first step toward reducing the stigma around it. When I hear mental health struggles dismissed as laziness, drama, or an excuse, I push back and try to reframe the conversation. Ultimately, this experience shaped my goal of pursuing a path where I can continue this kind of work on a larger scale, whether through counseling, education, or advocacy, so that fewer people have to hide what they are going through the way my friend once did.

It shaped my goal of working in a field where I can help reduce that silence, whether through counseling, education, or advocacy. It also changed my relationships, since I am now more attentive to the people around me and less afraid to ask directly how someone is really doing. Most of all, it taught me that destigmatizing mental health starts with small, consistent acts of care.

Growing up in Trenton taught me things no classroom ever could. I learned early that a city can be both broken and beautiful at the same time. I watched neighbors struggle to make rent, I watched friends’ families fall apart under financial stress, and I watched my own family stretch every dollar as far as it could go. Trenton is not an easy place to grow up, but it gave me something valuable: a front row seat to real life, and a reason to care about people who are struggling. Money has always been tight in my house. There were months when my parents had to choose between bills, and I got used to hearing “we’ll figure it out” more than I would have liked. I remember being embarrassed in middle school when I couldn’t go on class trips because of the cost, and I remember feeling like I had to grow up faster than my friends because I understood what stress about money actually looked like. Instead of letting that experience make me bitter, I decided to let it make me observant. I started noticing how financial hardship affects people mentally and emotionally, not just materially. I saw it in my neighbors, my classmates, and myself. That is what pulled me toward psychology. Living in a community full of people carrying invisible weight made me want to understand the mind behind the struggle. I want to know why stress affects people the way it does, how trauma shapes behavior, and most importantly, how people heal. I do not just want to study psychology in a textbook. I want to bring it back to places like Trenton, where people rarely get access to real mental health support. I want to be someone who understands both the science and the lived experience, because I have lived it myself. College is the only way I get there, but the truth is my family cannot cover the cost on our own. This scholarship would not just help me pay tuition, it would remove one of the biggest obstacles standing between me and my future. It would mean one less thing my parents have to worry about, and one more chance for me to prove that where you come from does not determine where you end up. Trenton made me resilient. It made me pay attention to the people around me instead of looking away. It gave me a reason to study psychology and a reason to care about giving back to communities like mine. This scholarship would not just support a student. It would support someone who already knows what it means to push through hardship, and who wants to spend her future helping others do the same.

From a young age, I understood that true success is not measured by what you accumulate, but by what you give back. Growing up, I was surrounded by people who needed support, whether emotionally, socially, or practically, and I made it my mission to show up for them however I could. That spirit of service has followed me through every stage of my life, and it is the driving force behind every goal I have set for myself, both in college and beyond. This fall, I will be attending Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, where I plan to study psychology and take the next major step toward a career built entirely around serving others. My community service background has shaped who I am in ways that no classroom ever could. Over the years I have dedicated well over one hundred hours to serving my community through various initiatives focused on peer support, youth engagement, and advocacy for mental health awareness. I have sat with peers during their hardest moments, helped connect people to resources they did not know existed, and used my voice to bring attention to issues that often get ignored in underserved communities. These experiences confirmed something I already felt deeply, that counseling and community work are not just career paths for me. They are a calling. While at CAU, my goals extend beyond simply earning a degree. I plan to get involved in organizations on campus that are centered around mental health advocacy and community outreach. I want to pursue research opportunities that explore how systemic inequality affects the mental health of Black youth and families. I also intend to maintain and build on the peer support skills I have developed by getting hands on experience through internships and volunteer programs in the Atlanta community. Every class I take and every connection I make will be building toward something larger than myself. After graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in psychology so that I can become a licensed counselor. My long term vision is to work directly with young people and families in underserved communities, providing culturally competent mental health care to those who need it most but often have the least access to it. I have also dreamed of one day founding a nonprofit organization called Steady Ground, which would offer free or low cost counseling, mentorship, and life skills programming to youth who are navigating difficult home environments or systemic barriers. Community service has never been something I did to check a box. It is woven into the fabric of who I am. College will give me the tools to elevate that service from informal support to professional impact, and I intend to carry that responsibility with me every step of the way. The world needs more healers, and I am committed to becoming one.

Being a good citizen is something that goes far beyond following the law or paying taxes. To me, it means showing up for your community, using your voice to advocate for change, and taking responsibility for the kind of society we are all building together. As a young Black woman about to enter college and pursue a career in psychology and counseling, I think about citizenship through the lens of service. A good citizen is someone who recognizes the problems around them and chooses to be part of the solution rather than standing on the sidelines. Voting is one of the most powerful and direct ways a citizen can participate in that process. People fought, bled, and died for the right to vote, and that history is not lost on me. For Black Americans especially, the right to vote was violently suppressed for generations, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a hard won victory that came at an enormous cost. When I think about casting my ballot for the first time, I do not take it lightly. Voting is how citizens hold their government accountable, elect leaders who reflect their values, and ensure that the policies shaping their daily lives actually represent them. A nation that stops voting is a nation that slowly surrenders its freedom to those with unchecked power. The Constitution is the backbone of that freedom. It is the document that established the framework for a government that is supposed to serve its people, not rule over them. To me, the Constitution represents both a promise and a responsibility. It promises protection of individual rights, freedom of speech, and equal treatment under the law. But it also represents a responsibility for every citizen to uphold those values in how we treat one another. The amendments added over time, including those that abolished slavery and granted women the right to vote, show that the Constitution is a living document that grows as our understanding of justice grows. My passion for citizenship is directly tied to my career goals. I plan to study psychology at Clark Atlanta University and eventually become a counselor working with young people and underserved communities. The issues that affect my clients will be deeply connected to policy, representation, and civic engagement. Whether it is mental health funding, access to education, or community safety, all of these outcomes are shaped by who is in office and whose voices are being heard. Being a good citizen means understanding that connection and refusing to be passive about it. I believe the next generation of citizens has the power to reshape this country for the better, but only if we stay engaged, stay informed, and show up every chance we get. Voting is not just a right, it is an act of love for your community and a declaration that your voice matters. The Constitution gives us the framework, but it is up to us as citizens to breathe life into it through our actions every single day. I intend to do exactly that.

For a long time, college felt like a distant dream, something I knew I wanted but was not sure I could reach. Growing up, I watched people around me struggle without the tools or support they needed to get through life’s hardest moments. I told myself that one day I would be the person who provided those tools. Going to college is not just the next step for me. It is the beginning of everything I have been working toward, and the foundation I need to build a life that creates real change for others. In the fall, I will be attending Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, where I plan to study psychology. This was not a random decision. I chose psychology because I have always been deeply connected to understanding people, their emotions, and the experiences that shape who they are. From navigating difficult situations within my own family to supporting friends through their personal struggles, I have seen firsthand how powerful it is when someone feels truly heard and understood. College is where I will turn that natural ability into a professional skill, and ultimately into a career that gives back to communities that need it most. My goal is to become a counselor who works with young people and families, particularly in underserved communities. Mental health resources are not equally accessible to everyone, and that gap has always bothered me. Too many young people are dealing with trauma, instability, and emotional pain without anyone qualified to help them process it. I want to be part of closing that gap. Through my education at CAU, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in psychology so that I am fully equipped to provide the kind of professional and culturally competent care that my community deserves. The drive behind my ambition comes from lived experience. I have not had a perfect or easy path to get here, but every challenge I have faced has added to my understanding of why this work matters. I have served as an informal resource for peers dealing with mental health struggles, and I have seen what a difference even one conversation can make when it comes from a place of genuine care. College will give me the knowledge, credentials, and platform to expand that impact far beyond what I can do on my own right now. Going to college means possibility. It means I am one step closer to launching a career that is rooted in purpose and service. It means I will have the education to back the passion I have always carried. Most importantly, it means that the young people I one day serve will have access to someone who truly understands them, because I was once in a similar position myself. I am not going to college just for a degree. I am going to change lives, starting with my own.

I am someone who came up the hard way and chose to let that make me better rather than bitter. I grew up in financial instability, took on caregiving responsibilities at home while trying to keep my grades up, watched a close friend struggle through addiction, and navigated all of it largely without a roadmap. I did not have every advantage. What I had was clarity, a growing understanding of what I was meant to do and why, and the stubborn belief that my circumstances were not the final word on my future. That clarity brought me to psychology. I want to study the human mind not as an abstract academic exercise but because I have lived inside the consequences of what happens when people do not get the mental health support they need. I have seen how untreated trauma ripples outward, through families, through friendships, through entire communities. I have also seen, in small ways, what changes when someone receives real support. I want to spend my career being part of that change. The positive impact I plan to make through my career is specific. I want to become a licensed counselor working in underserved communities, the ones that are most affected by poverty, systemic inequality, and lack of access to mental health resources, and the least likely to receive adequate care. I want to work with young people in particular, because adolescence is when so many patterns are set, and because I know firsthand how much a single supportive adult can alter the direction of a young person's life. I have already begun moving in that direction. As a peer supporter at my school, I have been a steady presence for classmates who were struggling and had nowhere to turn. I put together mental health resource guides for students whose families could not afford professional help. I showed up consistently, in the small unremarkable moments that do not get recognized but that matter more than most people realize. That work confirmed what I already suspected: that I am built for this, and that there is nothing I would rather do. The world I want to help build through my career is one where mental health care is not a privilege. Where a teenager growing up in a neighborhood like mine does not have to wait until crisis to receive support. Where the counselors and therapists who serve Black and brown and low-income communities come from those communities, understand them from the inside, and stay. I want to be one of those counselors. And eventually I want to mentor others who will carry that work forward long after I do. I am not under any illusion that one person changes the world alone. But I believe in the power of one person changing the world for one other person, and then another, and then another. That is how impact actually works. It is slow, cumulative, and deeply personal. I am ready to do that work for as long as it takes, and I am ready to start now.

My academic goal is straightforward: I want to earn a degree in psychology and go on to become a licensed counselor. My professional goal is more personal than that. I want to spend my career working in the communities that look like mine, serving young people and families who are navigating the kind of instability, trauma, and invisibility that I grew up surrounded by. I am not going into this field because it seems like a good career. I am going into it because I have seen the damage that happens when the right support does not exist, and I have decided that closing that gap is the work I am meant to do. Giving back to my community is not something I plan to start after college. I have already started. As a trained peer supporter at my school, I have made myself a consistent presence for classmates who were struggling emotionally and had no clear path to help. I created simple mental health resource guides listing free and low-cost counseling options, and I distributed them quietly to students I knew were dealing with difficult situations at home. I showed up for people in the hallways, at lunch, before school, in all the in-between spaces where struggling tends to live but support rarely reaches. That work taught me something important about what giving back actually means. It is not always loud or visible. Sometimes it is just being reliable. Being the person who does not look away. Being willing to sit in an uncomfortable conversation because the other person needs someone to stay. I learned that from my own life, from the moments when someone showed up for me and the moments when no one did. Both kinds of experiences shaped me. Both are the reason I keep showing up for others. The community service I have done has not just helped the people I was trying to reach. It has clarified my own sense of direction in ways I did not expect. Every time I sat with someone who was hurting and watched them leave the conversation a little lighter, I understood more clearly why I was pursuing psychology. Every resource guide I put together reminded me that access to information is a form of power, and that withholding it from people who need it most is its own kind of harm. Giving back did not just inspire me to make a difference. It showed me exactly what kind of difference I wanted to make. The world I want to help build is one where mental health support is not a luxury. Where a young person growing up in poverty or instability does not have to wait until crisis to receive care. Where the people providing that care come from the communities they serve, speak their language, and understand their reality from the inside. I want to be one of those people. And I want to train others to be them too, eventually mentoring the next generation of counselors the way I wish someone had mentored me. My goals are ambitious, but they are grounded. I know the path is long and I know it will be hard. But I have already proven that I can do hard things. Giving back to my community has not just been an act of service. It has been the clearest confirmation I have ever received that I am moving in exactly the right direction.

I am a high school senior with a clear sense of who I am and an even clearer sense of where I am trying to go. I grew up in a household shaped by financial instability, took on caregiving responsibilities at home while keeping up with school, navigated the pain of watching a close friend battle addiction, and still found a way to show up every day with purpose. I am not defined by those things, but I am built from them. They are the reason I want to study psychology, the reason I am drawn to counseling, and the reason I believe I have something real to offer the world. Throughout high school I have worked to be the kind of person my community needed and I did not always have growing up. I got trained as a peer supporter and made myself available to classmates who were struggling with things they could not say out loud to an adult. I created informal mental health resource guides for students whose families could not access professional help. I sat with people in their hard moments and tried to make those moments feel less isolating. None of that came from a club requirement or a college resume calculation. It came from knowing firsthand what it feels like to need someone and not have them. I want to take that same orientation into a career in psychology and counseling. Specifically, I want to work with young people and families in underserved communities, the ones who are least likely to seek help and most likely to need it. I have already seen how much difference one steady, non-judgmental presence can make in a person's life. I want to be that presence, professionally and with training behind me, for as many people as I can reach. What stands between me and that future right now is practical: the cost of college. My family is not in a position to contribute to my education. I have applied for federal aid and plan to work while in school, but the financial gap is significant. Every scholarship I receive directly reduces the debt I would otherwise carry into my adult life, and that matters more than it might seem. Debt shapes decisions. It narrows options. It can push someone away from the lower-paying community-based work they were meant to do and toward whatever pays the bills. I do not want my financial situation to determine who I get to serve. This scholarship would give me more than money. It would give me freedom. The freedom to focus fully on my studies, to pursue internships in the communities I want to eventually work in, and to graduate with a plan rather than a financial crisis. It would also give me something harder to quantify but just as real: the knowledge that someone looked at my story and decided it was worth investing in. That kind of belief has a way of carrying a person further than they expected to go. I am not asking for something I have not worked for. I am asking for a bridge between where I am and where I know I am capable of going. I have already proven I can handle hard things. With this scholarship behind me, I am ready to prove what I can build.

My relationship with Jesus did not begin with a single defining moment. It grew slowly, the way most real things do, through years of hardship, quiet reflection, and a gradual realization that the peace I kept searching for outside of myself had been available to me all along. I did not grow up in a house where faith was loudly practiced. It was more something I found on my own, in the margins of difficult seasons, when everything else felt uncertain and I needed something steady to hold onto. There were years when I kept God at a distance, not out of disbelief but out of the kind of exhaustion that makes it hard to reach toward anything. I was managing too much, financial instability at home, caring for a family member, watching people I loved struggle, trying to hold my own life together while the ground beneath me kept shifting. Prayer felt like one more thing I did not have the energy for. But somewhere in the middle of all of that, I started talking to God anyway, not with formal words or structured prayers, but honestly, the way you talk to someone when you have run out of the strength to pretend you are fine. That honesty changed everything. I discovered that my relationship with Jesus grew strongest not when life was easy, but when I stopped trying to carry everything alone. Reflection became a daily practice for me, quiet moments in the morning or before I fell asleep where I brought my fears, my hopes, and my gratitude to God without filtering any of it. Those moments became the most grounding part of my day. They still are. They remind me that my worth is not determined by my circumstances, that I am seen even when I feel invisible, and that I was created with a purpose I am still in the process of uncovering. That sense of purpose is directly connected to why I am pursuing higher education. I believe that my gifts, my capacity for empathy, my ability to sit with people in their pain, my hunger to understand the human mind, were given to me for a reason. Studying psychology is not separate from my faith. It is an extension of it. Jesus spent his life among the people society had pushed to the margins. I want my career to reflect that same orientation, toward the overlooked, the struggling, the ones who have been told in one way or another that they do not matter. Throughout my educational journey I plan to carry my faith the same way I carry it now, through daily reflection, through humility, and through a commitment to showing up for others the way I believe God has shown up for me. I do not expect college to be easy. I expect it to challenge me in ways I cannot fully anticipate. But I also know that the same faith that carried me through my hardest years will carry me through whatever comes next. I have already learned that I do not have to have everything figured out. I just have to keep moving forward and trust that the path will become clearer as I walk it. My relationship with Jesus taught me that growth is rarely linear and grace is rarely loud. It shows up in the quiet, in the small moments of clarity after prayer, in the unexpected strength that appears exactly when you need it. I am taking that lesson with me into every classroom, every challenge, and every opportunity that lies ahead.

The first time I watched A Bronx Tale, I was not looking for a life lesson. I was just watching a movie. But somewhere in the middle of it, I realized I was not just watching a story about a kid from the Bronx in the 1960s. I was watching something that felt uncomfortably close to the choices I was already facing in my own life. That is the kind of movie A Bronx Tale is. It does not lecture you. It just holds up a mirror and asks you what you see. The film follows Calogero, a boy growing up in a tough neighborhood who is pulled between two father figures: his hardworking, honest bus driver father Lorenzo, and Sonny, the charismatic local mob boss who takes him under his wing. On the surface it is a story about loyalty and temptation. But what struck me most deeply was the question underneath all of it: who do you become when the world around you is telling you to be something smaller than you are capable of being? I grew up around people who made difficult choices, not because they were bad people, but because the options in front of them felt limited. I watched people I cared about get pulled toward paths that offered short-term relief and long-term cost. I understood the appeal. When everything around you feels unstable, certainty, even the wrong kind, can feel like a lifeline. A Bronx Tale was the first thing that helped me put language to what I was seeing and feeling. Calogero did not choose the easy road. He chose the harder, slower, more uncertain one. And the film does not pretend that choice was painless. It just makes clear that it was the right one. The line that has stayed with me longest is when Lorenzo tells his son that the saddest thing in life is wasted talent. I have thought about that line more times than I can count. I have thought about it on the days when giving up felt easier than pushing forward. I have thought about it when I watched people around me settle for less than they deserved because no one had ever told them they deserved more. That line became a kind of quiet standard I held myself to. I was not going to waste what I had been given, even if what I had been given came wrapped in hardship. A Bronx Tale reinforced something I was already beginning to believe: that where you come from does not have to determine where you end up, but it does require a decision. Not once, but over and over again. Every day is another version of the choice Calogero had to make. I think about that as I head toward college, toward a degree in psychology, toward a future I am actively building rather than passively waiting for. The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is not the one with the biggest budget or the most famous cast. It is the one that told the truth about the neighborhood, about the pressure, about the pull of the wrong path, and still found a way to say that a good life is possible if you are willing to fight for it. A Bronx Tale gave me that. I plan to spend the rest of my life earning it.

I did not learn about addiction from a textbook or a health class video. I learned about it by watching someone I loved disappear slowly, in pieces, right in front of me. My closest friend, someone I had grown up with and trusted completely, fell into substance use during our high school years. What started as something I did not fully understand became something I could no longer ignore. And by the time I understood what was really happening, the person I had known felt like a stranger wearing a familiar face. Watching that unfold was one of the hardest things I have ever been through. There were days I showed up for them the way I knew how, sitting with them, checking in, trying to say the right thing without pushing them away. There were other days I did not know what to do at all, days I felt helpless and scared and angry all at once. I did not have the language for what was happening. Nobody around me did either. We were all just trying to hold on to someone who was slipping, and none of us had been given any tools to help. What hurt almost as much as watching the addiction itself was watching the way the world responded to it. The judgment. The silence. The way people who needed compassion and care were instead met with shame. I saw my friend shrink under the weight of that, and I made a quiet promise to myself that if I ever had the ability to change that experience for someone else, I would. That promise is a large part of why I want to pursue a degree in psychology with a focus on rehabilitation and substance use counseling. I want to be trained in the science behind addiction so that I can do more than just show up with good intentions. I want to understand the neurological and emotional roots of dependency, the barriers that keep people from seeking help, and the evidence-based approaches that actually work. I want to be someone who knows what to do when someone is slipping, because I remember all too clearly what it felt like not to know. My goals are specific. I want to work in community-based rehabilitation settings, the kind that serve people who cannot afford private treatment, the kind that exist in neighborhoods like mine. I want to be part of a system that treats addiction as a health issue and not a character flaw. And I want to work with young people especially, because the earlier someone receives real support, the better their chances of finding their way back to themselves. My friend is still a part of my life. Their journey has not been a straight line, and I have learned that recovery rarely is. But they are still here, and so am I. The experience changed both of us. For me, it lit a fire that has not gone out since. I am going to college because I believe that what I study there can eventually save someone's life. I have already seen what happens when the right support does not exist. I want to spend my career making sure it does.

I am a senior who has spent the last four years balancing school with something most of my classmates have not had to think about: being a caregiver. At home, I help look after a family member who depends on me for daily support. That responsibility has meant early mornings, late nights, and learning very quickly how to manage my time without anyone reminding me to. It has also meant developing a kind of patience and emotional steadiness that I believe no classroom alone could have taught me. At school, I have channeled that same energy into the things that matter most to me. I have been involved in my school's peer support program, where students are trained to check in on classmates who may be struggling emotionally or academically. It felt like a natural fit. I have also participated in community outreach efforts through my school, helping organize drives for families in need and showing up for events that most people volunteer for once and then forget. For me, it was never about the hours or the resume line. It was about showing up consistently for people who needed someone to show up. Outside of those commitments, my deepest interest is in understanding people. I spend a lot of my free time reading about psychology, human behavior, and the science behind why people respond to trauma and stress the way they do. That curiosity is not academic for me. It is personal. I want to understand the world I grew up in so I can eventually help change it for others. After high school, I plan to pursue a degree in psychology and go on to work as a licensed counselor, specifically with youth and families in underserved communities. I want to be in the rooms where people feel like no one is listening, and I want to be proof that someone is. If I could start a charity, it would be called Steady Ground. Its mission would be simple: to provide free mental health support, mentorship, and life skills resources to young people who are growing up in unstable home environments. I would serve kids between the ages of ten and eighteen who are slipping through the cracks, the ones managing too much at home while trying to hold it together in school. Volunteers would include licensed therapists offering free sessions, college students acting as near-peer mentors, and community members teaching practical skills like budgeting, cooking, and self-advocacy. The goal would not be to fix anyone. It would be to stand beside them long enough that they start to believe they can stand on their own. I know what it feels like to need something like Steady Ground and not have it. That is exactly why I want to build it someday. Everything I am working toward, this degree, this career, this life I am carefully constructing, is pointed in that direction. I am not just planning a future for myself. I am planning one for every kid who is still waiting for someone to believe in them.

Money was never a topic that was explained to me. It was just something we never seemed to have enough of. Growing up, I watched my family make impossible choices, whether to pay the electric bill or buy groceries, whether to fix the car or keep the phone on. Nobody sat me down and taught me about budgets or savings accounts or credit scores. What I learned about finances I learned the hard way, by watching the consequences of not having them managed well. And while that was painful, it turned out to be one of the most formative educations of my life. From a young age I understood that financial instability did not just affect your bank account. It affected your health, your relationships, your ability to think clearly about the future. I watched stress quietly consume the people I loved most. I saw how a single unexpected expense could unravel months of careful stretching. I also noticed something else though. I noticed that the families around us who seemed to navigate hardship more steadily were not always the ones who had more money. They were the ones who understood how to use what they had. That distinction stayed with me. As I got older I started teaching myself the things nobody had taught me. I read about budgeting, about the difference between needs and wants, about how compound interest works both for and against you depending on which side of it you are on. I opened a savings account with the small amounts I earned from odd jobs and made a rule with myself that a portion of every dollar I brought in would not be touched. It was not much, but it was mine, and it was intentional. That shift in thinking, from money as something that happens to you to money as something you can actually manage, changed my entire relationship with the future. Financial education should not be a privilege. It should not be something only certain families pass down or certain schools bother to teach. One of the reasons I am drawn to a career in psychology and community counseling is because I have seen firsthand how financial stress operates underneath so many other struggles. Anxiety, family conflict, low self-worth, these things are often tangled up with money in ways that go unspoken. I want to work with young people and communities that look like mine, and part of that work will be helping people build not just emotional resilience but practical financial confidence. Going to college is itself a financial decision, and I am approaching it as one. I have researched the costs carefully. I plan to apply for every scholarship and grant available to me, keep my student loan borrowing as minimal as possible, work part time during school, and graduate with a clear plan rather than a pile of debt and no direction. I am not naive about how hard that will be. But I have already lived through hard. What I have now that I did not have before is knowledge, and I intend to use it. My personal experience with finances did not come wrapped in lessons or guidance. It came wrapped in stress and scarcity. But I refuse to let that be the end of my story. I am going to be the first person in my family to graduate from college, build a stable career, and model for the people around me what it looks like when financial education actually reaches the people who need it most. That is not just a goal. It is a commitment.

Some people discover who they are through opportunity. I discovered who I am through survival. Growing up in a household where financial instability was not an occasional setback but a daily reality shaped me in ways I am still learning to name. There were stretches of time when the lights were off, when meals were stretched thin, and when the adults around me were too overwhelmed to think past the week they were in. I was a child trying to make sense of a world that felt permanently on the edge of falling apart. What those years taught me was not bitterness. They taught me how to pay attention. I became someone who noticed the quiet weight people carried, who understood without being told that struggle was not something to be ashamed of. That awareness became my compass. It pointed me toward psychology, toward a future where I could sit with people in their hardest moments and help them find a way through. I know what it means to feel invisible in your own pain. I want to spend my life making sure others feel seen. The financial barriers between me and a college degree are real. My family cannot contribute to tuition, housing, or books. I have applied for federal aid and plan to work, but the gap between what I need and what I have access to is significant. Every dollar I do not have to borrow is a dollar that does not follow me into my future as debt. Every scholarship I receive is proof that someone believed my story was worth investing in, and that belief matters more than I can put into words. This scholarship would not just help me pay for school. It would give me the freedom to focus. To study harder, to show up more fully, to pursue internships and experiences that will make me a better counselor someday. I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for a bridge, something to close the distance between where I come from and where I know I am capable of going. The challenges I have faced did not break me. They built me into someone who is steady, empathetic, and deeply motivated. I am ready for college. I am ready to work. And I am ready to take everything this scholarship makes possible and give it back to the world in a way that actually matters.

Growing up, I never had the luxury of taking things for granted. From a young age, I watched my family navigate financial instability, and there were moments when the future felt more like a burden than a possibility. School was my escape, my one constant, and even when everything around me felt uncertain, I held onto it. That is where my story begins, and that is why I am standing at the door of higher education today, not just ready to walk through it, but deeply grateful for the chance. I want to study psychology because I believe understanding the human mind is one of the most powerful tools a person can carry. Growing up the way I did, I became a quiet observer of people. I noticed how stress lived in someone's posture, how trauma shaped the way a person chose their words, how a single supportive adult could shift the entire direction of a child's life. I did not learn those things from a textbook. I learned them from living. Psychology gave me the language for what I had always seen but could never name. My commitment to higher education is not something I arrived at easily. There were nights I questioned whether college was even realistic for someone in my position. But I kept thinking about the people in my community who never got the chance, and the people who did and used it to come back and give more than they took. I want to be one of those people. I want a degree not as a trophy, but as a foundation. Something sturdy enough to build a life on and generous enough to help others build theirs. With a degree in psychology, I hope to work in mental health counseling, specifically with young people who are walking the same roads I once walked. I know what it feels like to sit across from someone and wonder if they actually see you. I want to be the kind of person who sees people clearly and without judgment. Whether that looks like school counseling, community mental health work, or eventually pursuing graduate studies, I am committed to a career rooted in service and compassion. I am not the student who had every advantage. I did not have tutors or a quiet place to study or parents who had been to college before me. What I did have was determination, a deep hunger to understand the world, and the belief, even on my hardest days, that my circumstances did not have to be my ceiling. Higher education is the next step in that belief becoming real. I am ready to work for it, and I am humbled by the opportunity to try.

I've always been the person that others come to when they need to talk. Even as a kid, I noticed things about people that others seemed to miss, like when someone was struggling even though they kept saying they were fine, or when a friend needed someone to listen more than they needed advice. I didn't really have a word for it back then, but now I do. Psychology is what I've been drawn to my whole life, and it's exactly what I want to study and build a career around. Volunteering in my community has only made that passion stronger. I've spent time working with people who are going through some really difficult things, and what I've noticed is that a lot of them don't just need practical help. They need someone who actually tries to understand what they're going through. Being present for people in that way has taught me more about human behavior and emotional need than I ever expected. It also showed me how big the gap is between the mental health support people need and what they actually have access to. Some of the most meaningful moments I've had while volunteering were simply sitting with someone who felt like no one understood them. Those conversations reminded me that service doesn't always look like doing something big. Sometimes it just means showing up and making someone feel less alone. That's something I want to carry with me as I move forward in my education, because I think it's at the heart of what good mental health support looks like. Studying psychology will give me the knowledge and skills to serve people on a much deeper level. I want to understand why people think and behave the way they do, and use that understanding to actually help them. I'm really interested in working with underserved communities where mental health resources are hard to come by, because I've seen firsthand how much of a difference it makes when someone finally gets the support they need. Whether that looks like counseling, community outreach, or advocacy, I want my career to be rooted in making mental health care more accessible and less stigmatized. I chose psychology because I believe that understanding the mind is one of the most powerful ways to help people. So much of what holds people back in life comes down to mental and emotional barriers, and I want to be someone who helps break those down. This scholarship would help me get the education I need to do that work well. I'm ready to put in everything it takes, because the people I want to serve deserve someone who truly cares, and I genuinely do.
