Being raised by a single parent has greatly shaped my academic journey and motivation. My mother has always worked hard to provide for me, even during difficult financial and personal struggles. There were times when her anxiety made it hard for her to work, which created additional stress for our family. Watching her continue to push forward despite those challenges taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of education.
Growing up in these circumstances motivated me to take school seriously because I want to build a better future for myself and support my family. Instead of allowing hardships to stop me, they pushed me to work harder and stay focused on my goals. My experiences have helped me mature, become more independent, and appreciate every opportunity I receive.
I hope to earn a degree in kinesiology or biomedical sciences as a step toward becoming an orthopedic surgeon or sports medicine physician. I have always been passionate about helping people recover from injuries and improving their quality of life. My interest in medicine became even stronger after seeing family members struggle with serious health conditions and understanding how important compassionate healthcare can be.
Earning my degree would mean more than achieving a career goal. It would represent overcoming challenges, honoring my mother’s sacrifices, and proving that difficult circumstances do not determine someone’s future.

Watching my grandmother battle breast cancer completely changed the way I see health, education, and life itself. Before her diagnosis, breast cancer was something I only heard about online or on television. I never imagined it would become part of my own family’s story. Seeing someone I loved suffer through the disease showed me why breast health education is so important and why people need access to accurate medical information instead of fear and misinformation.
My grandmother first discovered signs of breast cancer while living in Ghana. Instead of immediately seeking treatment, she listened to a pastor who told her that if doctors performed surgery on the cancer, she would die. Out of fear, she delayed treatment and trusted prayers alone would heal her. Unfortunately, by the time she realized the cancer was getting worse, it had already spread further through her body. Looking back, one of the saddest parts of her story is knowing that earlier treatment and better health education could have given her a greater chance to survive.
Eventually, my grandmother came to the United States with me in hopes of receiving stronger medicine and better care. I remember the hope my family had when she arrived. We believed American hospitals, doctors, and treatments would save her life. However, I quickly learned how brutal cancer treatment can be. Chemotherapy made her miserable. The strong medications drained her energy and changed her physically and emotionally. She became extremely weak, struggled to eat, and lost so much weight that she barely looked like herself anymore. Watching her become thinner and weaker every week was heartbreaking because I remembered the strong, energetic woman she used to be.
Even through all her suffering, my grandmother tried to stay positive for our family. She would smile during difficult days and tell us to keep faith, even when she was in pain. Her strength inspired me deeply. At the same time, her battle showed me how important breast health education truly is. People need to understand the dangers of delaying treatment and the importance of listening to trained medical professionals. Fear, misinformation, and lack of education can cost lives.
Sadly, the cancer eventually spread to her uterus, and in February 2025, my grandmother passed away. Losing her was one of the most painful moments of my life. Her death left a permanent impact on me, but it also gave me a greater purpose. It strengthened my desire to pursue a career in medicine where I can help people facing illnesses feel supported, informed, and cared for. I want to be someone who encourages patients to seek treatment early instead of being controlled by fear.
Breast health education matters to me because I experienced the effects of breast cancer firsthand. I saw how the disease affects not only the patient but the entire family. My grandmother’s story taught me that education can save lives, misinformation can destroy them, and compassionate healthcare can give people hope even in their darkest moments. Although she is no longer here, her courage and resilience continue to inspire me every day.

One of the hardest experiences I have faced related to addiction involved a close friend of mine. Growing up, I never fully understood how deeply drug addiction could affect a person’s life until I watched someone I cared about struggle with it firsthand. My friend was intelligent, hardworking, and full of potential, but over time drugs slowly changed his behavior, decisions, and relationships. Watching someone I knew begin to lose motivation, isolate himself from others, and make harmful choices was painful because I could see how addiction affected not only him, but also the people around him.
At first, many people around him thought it was just a temporary phase, but the situation became more serious over time. He started missing important responsibilities, distancing himself from friends and family, and struggling emotionally. There were moments when I tried to encourage him to focus on his future and surround himself with better influences, but addiction made it difficult for him to see the damage it was causing. Seeing this happen taught me how powerful addiction can be and how easily it can change the direction of someone’s life.
One of the biggest lessons I learned from this experience is the importance of support, guidance, and mental strength. Addiction is not simply about making bad decisions; many people turn to drugs because they are struggling emotionally, mentally, or socially. Watching my friend go through those challenges helped me understand that people dealing with addiction often need encouragement, accountability, and access to positive support systems. It also showed me how important it is to surround yourself with people who motivate you to grow instead of pulling you away from your goals.
Although it was difficult watching my friend struggle, the experience motivated me to stay focused on my own future and make positive decisions for my life. I became more determined to pursue my education, continue my military service in the Army Reserve, and work toward my goal of entering the healthcare field. I realized that discipline, purpose, and strong support systems are important in overcoming challenges and building a better future. Instead of allowing negative influences to distract me, I decided to focus on becoming someone who can positively impact others.
Moving forward, I want to use my experiences to encourage people who may be struggling with addiction or difficult situations. I understand how important it is for individuals to feel supported and not judged during hard times. In the future, I hope to make a positive impact through healthcare, mentorship, and community involvement. Whether through my future career in sports medicine or simply by supporting others around me, I want to help people believe they can overcome obstacles and create better futures for themselves.
This experience taught me that addiction does not only affect one person; it affects families, friendships, and entire communities. However, it also taught me the importance of resilience, personal responsibility, and surrounding yourself with positive influences. My goal is to continue growing, stay focused on my education and career, and use my experiences to inspire others to make healthy and positive choices for their lives.

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
The central idea behind this passage from Marcus Aurelius is that a person’s mindset shapes the way they experience life more than external circumstances do. Aurelius argues that true peace and happiness are not controlled by money, success, comfort, or status, but by the discipline of one’s thoughts. I believe this idea remains powerful today because many people allow fear, stress, or negativity to influence how they see themselves and the world around them. Aurelius teaches that while people cannot always control what happens in life, they can control how they respond mentally and emotionally. This ability to control one’s perspective is what creates resilience and inner peace.
This passage reflects the philosophy of Stoicism, which emphasizes self-control, discipline, and emotional strength. Aurelius does not suggest that life will always be fair or easy. Instead, he explains that suffering becomes worse when people allow negative thoughts to dominate their minds. The statement suggests that happiness is not something given by external achievements, but something developed internally through perspective and self-discipline. A person who constantly focuses on fear, anger, or failure may never feel satisfied, even if they achieve success. In contrast, someone who trains themselves to think calmly and rationally can remain strong even during difficult situations.
I connect deeply with this idea because I have seen how mindset can affect people during challenging moments. Watching my mother work hard as a single parent taught me the importance of perseverance and mental strength. There were stressful times when life felt uncertain, but she continued to stay focused on supporting our family instead of giving up. Her resilience showed me that attitude and determination can help people overcome obstacles even when circumstances are difficult. I learned that strong thinking often creates strong actions.
This philosophy also became meaningful to me while helping care for my grandmother during her battle with cancer. I cared for her both in Ghana and later in the United States before she sadly passed away in February 2025. Watching someone I loved experience pain and weakness was emotionally difficult, but it also taught me valuable lessons about patience, compassion, and emotional resilience. Even during difficult days, my grandmother tried to remain hopeful and strong for our family. Her attitude showed me that while illness can affect the body, mindset still plays an important role in how people face hardship. That experience strengthened my desire to pursue a career in healthcare because I want to support patients physically and emotionally during difficult times.
Aurelius’s message is also important in healthcare and leadership. Medical professionals often work in stressful environments where patients are facing pain, fear, or uncertainty. If healthcare workers allow panic or negativity to control their thinking, they may struggle to care for others effectively. However, maintaining discipline, calmness, and empathy can positively impact both patients and healthcare teams. This idea connects to my future goal of becoming a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon. I want to become someone who can stay calm under pressure, make thoughtful decisions, and encourage patients during recovery.
The deeper meaning of this passage is not simply “think positively.” Marcus Aurelius is arguing that humans must take responsibility for their thoughts because thoughts influence actions, emotions, and character. A person who develops discipline over their thinking develops strength in every area of life. Happiness, according to Aurelius, comes from mastering oneself rather than trying to control everything around you.
Even though this quote was written centuries ago, its message still applies today. In a world filled with stress, distractions, and uncertainty, Marcus Aurelius reminds readers that inner discipline and strong thinking are essential for living a meaningful, balanced, and resilient life.
VNutrition and Wellness Nursing Scholarship
My career in healthcare will focus on improving people’s overall health by encouraging healthier lifestyles, better nutrition, and stronger habits that support long-term wellness. I understand that nutrition plays a major role in both physical and mental health. Poor eating habits can increase the risk of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and low energy levels, while healthy nutrition can improve recovery, confidence, and quality of life. As someone interested in healthcare and sports medicine, I want to help people understand how proper nutrition and healthy habits can positively affect their daily lives.
My passion for helping others developed through both personal experiences and my interest in sports and health. Watching family members face health challenges taught me how important it is to care for the body and maintain healthy habits. I also became interested in how nutrition affects athletic performance, recovery, and injury prevention. Over time, I realized that healthcare professionals do more than treat illnesses; they also educate and encourage patients to make healthier decisions before serious health problems develop. That is the type of impact I hope to make in my future career.
One of the most important steps I plan to take is educating patients about balanced nutrition in a simple and realistic way. Many people know healthy eating is important, but they may not fully understand how to apply it in their daily lives. I want to help patients learn about portion control, hydration, balanced meals, and the importance of fruits, vegetables, protein, and whole foods. I also understand that every person has different circumstances, so I want to encourage healthy habits that are practical and achievable rather than unrealistic.
I also plan to encourage healthier eating habits by leading through example and promoting active lifestyles. Physical activity and nutrition work together to improve overall health, and I want to motivate people to stay active in ways that fit their interests and abilities. Because of my passion for sports medicine, I especially hope to work with younger athletes and active individuals to teach them the importance of proper nutrition, recovery, and injury prevention. Building healthy habits early can create long-term positive effects on both physical and mental health.
Another important part of improving overall health is creating supportive environments where patients feel comfortable asking questions and learning. Many people struggle with stress, financial challenges, or limited access to healthy foods, which can make maintaining healthy habits difficult. I want to approach patients with empathy and understanding instead of judgment. Healthcare professionals should encourage patients and help them make gradual improvements rather than making them feel discouraged.
My experiences in the Army Reserve have also taught me discipline, responsibility, and the importance of physical fitness. These lessons strengthened my understanding of how nutrition and healthy routines can improve both performance and overall well-being. I plan to carry these values into my future healthcare career.
Ultimately, I want my career to help people feel healthier, stronger, and more confident in themselves. Through education, encouragement, and compassionate care, I hope to inspire healthier eating habits and improve the overall well-being of the individuals and communities I serve.
Melendez for Nurses Scholarship
Having a family member with a serious illness shaped me into a more compassionate, patient, and responsible person. My grandmother’s battle with cancer had one of the biggest impacts on my life and played a major role in inspiring my journey toward healthcare and nursing. Watching someone I loved struggle with illness showed me how important care, support, and empathy are during difficult times. It also taught me the importance of being strong for others even when situations become emotionally painful.
My grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, and I helped take care of her both in Ghana and later in the United States. During that time, I saw firsthand how much strength and courage she had while fighting her illness. There were many moments when she was tired, weak, or in pain, but she continued to stay strong for our family. Helping care for her taught me responsibility at a young age. Sometimes it involved helping her move around, making sure she was comfortable, assisting with daily activities, or simply spending time with her so she would not feel alone. Even small actions like sitting with her, listening to her, and encouraging her made me realize how meaningful emotional support can be for someone going through a serious illness.
Caring for my grandmother also helped me better understand the important role healthcare workers and nurses play in patients’ lives. Nurses were often the people who brought comfort during difficult moments, answered questions patiently, and treated my grandmother with kindness and dignity. Seeing the compassion they showed inspired me deeply. I realized that healthcare is not only about treating a disease, but also about supporting people emotionally and helping families through stressful situations.
Unfortunately, my grandmother sadly passed away in February 2025. Losing her was one of the hardest experiences my family and I have faced. Even though it was painful, the experience taught me valuable lessons about resilience, compassion, and the importance of caring for others while they are still here. Her strength during her illness continues to inspire me every day and motivates me to pursue a future where I can help people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
My experiences caring for my grandmother influenced my interest in healthcare because I understand how important it is for patients to feel supported and respected. I want to become a healthcare professional who treats patients with patience, empathy, and compassion. I know that illnesses and disabilities affect not only the individual, but also the entire family. Because of this, I want to help create an environment where patients and families feel heard, cared for, and encouraged.
In addition to my family experiences, my time in the Army Reserve has strengthened my discipline, teamwork, and ability to remain calm under pressure. Combined with the lessons I learned while caring for my grandmother, these experiences have prepared me to pursue a future centered on service and healthcare.
Although losing my grandmother was heartbreaking, her life and strength continue to guide me. She inspired me to pursue a path where I can make a difference in the lives of others through compassion, care, and support.
EverGreen Trails of Service Scholarship
Although my long-term goal is to work in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery, nursing is a field I deeply respect because of the direct impact nurses have on patients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I have chosen to pursue a healthcare-related path because I want to help people recover physically and emotionally while making a meaningful difference in my community. Healthcare professionals are often the people patients rely on most during injuries, illnesses, and recovery, and I want to build a career centered on compassion, service, and healing.
If I were to pursue nursing, I would be most interested in sports medicine, rehabilitation, or emergency care because those specialties combine patient care, teamwork, and recovery support. I have always been passionate about sports and fascinated by how the body heals after injuries. Seeing athletes and active individuals overcome setbacks inspired me to pursue a career where I can help patients regain confidence and return to doing the activities they love. I believe rehabilitation and recovery involve more than physical healing alone. Patients also need emotional encouragement, patience, and motivation throughout the process.
The patient demographic I feel most connected to is young athletes and active individuals recovering from injuries. Injuries can be mentally challenging, especially for younger patients who may feel discouraged when they cannot participate in sports or daily activities. I want to work with patients who are facing these struggles because I understand how important physical activity, teamwork, and confidence can be in someone’s life. My goal would be to support patients not only medically, but emotionally as well, helping them stay motivated during difficult recovery periods.
My experiences growing up have also influenced my passion for healthcare. Watching my mother work hard as a single parent taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of helping others during difficult times. There were moments when life became stressful, but she continued to push forward for our family. Seeing her strength inspired me to pursue a future where I can positively impact the lives of others. I learned that caring for people often means supporting them emotionally as much as physically.
In addition, my experience in the Army Reserve has strengthened my leadership, discipline, and ability to remain calm under pressure. Military service has taught me teamwork, responsibility, and the importance of serving others before yourself. These qualities are essential in healthcare and nursing because patients need professionals they can trust during stressful and uncertain situations. My military experience has also increased my desire to continue serving others through a medical career.
Although I do not currently plan to specialize in stoma care, I respect the nurses and healthcare professionals who dedicate themselves to helping patients with long-term medical conditions and recovery challenges. Their compassion and patience make a major difference in patients’ lives and recovery journeys.
No matter which healthcare path I ultimately pursue, my goal is to provide compassionate care, encourage patients through difficult moments, and make a positive impact on my community. Through healthcare, service, and leadership, I hope to build a career focused on helping others heal and regain confidence in themselves.
Jeune-Mondestin Scholarship
Growing up, I learned the importance of resilience, discipline, and helping others through the experiences of my family, work, and military service. My mother has been one of the biggest influences in my life. As a single parent, she worked hard to provide for our family even during difficult times. Watching her continue to push forward despite stress and challenges taught me the value of perseverance and responsibility. Her strength inspired me to stay focused on my education and pursue a future where I can positively impact the lives of others.
I chose healthcare and health science as my field of study because I have always been passionate about sports, medicine, and helping people recover from injuries. Over time, I realized that I was not only interested in sports themselves, but also in the science behind recovery, rehabilitation, and physical performance. Seeing how injuries can affect a person physically and emotionally inspired me to pursue a career where I can help individuals regain confidence and return to doing the activities they love. My long-term goal is to become a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon so I can combine my passion for healthcare with my desire to serve others.
Another reason I chose healthcare is because it allows me to make a direct and meaningful difference in people’s lives. Healthcare professionals are often there for patients during some of the most difficult moments they experience. Whether someone is recovering from a serious injury, dealing with pain, or struggling emotionally after a setback, compassionate care can make a major difference in their recovery. I want to become the type of healthcare professional who treats patients with respect, patience, and empathy while helping them heal physically and mentally.
My experiences in the Army Reserve have also strengthened my interest in healthcare and service. Being enlisted has taught me leadership, teamwork, discipline, and the importance of remaining calm under pressure. These experiences have prepared me for the challenges that come with a career in healthcare because both fields require commitment, responsibility, and the ability to support others during stressful situations. Military service has shown me the importance of serving something greater than yourself, and I hope to continue carrying those values into my future medical career.
I also believe healthcare professionals have the ability to create positive change within communities. Many people struggle with limited access to healthcare resources, mental health support, and proper education about healthy lifestyles. In the future, I hope to help underserved communities by providing quality care, encouraging injury prevention, and supporting people who may not always have access to medical resources. I also want to mentor younger students and encourage them to pursue careers in healthcare and science.
The difference I want to make is simple: I want to help people heal, regain confidence, and improve their quality of life. Through healthcare, I hope to support individuals during difficult moments and inspire others to believe in their ability to overcome challenges. By combining education, compassion, and service, I want to build a career that creates a lasting positive impact on both individuals and the community around me.
Future of S&C: Strength Coach Job Network Scholarship
The field of strength and conditioning is evolving rapidly as technology, sports science, and healthcare continue to become more connected. Over the next five to ten years, I believe strength and conditioning will place a much greater focus on injury prevention, recovery, personalized training programs, and overall athlete wellness. Coaches and healthcare professionals are beginning to understand that performance is not only about pushing athletes harder, but also about training smarter and protecting long-term health. As someone who plans to pursue a career in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery, I am excited to contribute to this evolution and help athletes perform at their best while staying healthy.
One major change I see in the future is the increased use of technology and data in training. Wearable devices, motion tracking systems, and recovery monitoring tools are already helping coaches measure fatigue, movement patterns, and injury risks. In the future, these tools will likely become even more advanced and accessible. Strength and conditioning professionals will be able to create highly personalized training programs based on an athlete’s body, recovery rate, and performance goals. This approach can help reduce injuries and improve long-term athletic development. I believe technology will continue to make training safer and more effective for athletes at all levels.
Another important shift will be the stronger connection between physical and mental health. Athletes face intense pressure from competition, expectations, injuries, and balancing responsibilities outside of sports. Over the next decade, I believe strength and conditioning programs will place more emphasis on mental wellness, recovery, and building confidence. Coaches and trainers will need to support athletes emotionally as well as physically. This is especially important for younger athletes who may struggle with confidence after injuries or setbacks. I believe creating healthy and supportive environments will become one of the most important parts of athletic development.
I also think injury prevention will become one of the biggest priorities in the field. Too many athletes experience injuries because of overtraining, poor recovery habits, or lack of proper guidance. As someone interested in sports medicine, I want to contribute by helping athletes understand the importance of recovery, mobility, nutrition, and safe training techniques. I want to work closely with athletes to help them stay healthy while still improving their performance. My goal is not only to help people recover after injuries, but also to help prevent injuries before they happen.
My experiences in sports, school, work, and the Army Reserve have taught me discipline, leadership, and the importance of teamwork. These lessons will help me contribute positively to the future of strength and conditioning. I want to continue learning about sports science, rehabilitation, and athlete performance so I can combine medical knowledge with training and recovery methods. In the future, I hope to work with athletes of all ages and backgrounds, especially younger athletes who may not always have access to quality training or healthcare resources.
The future of strength and conditioning will be more advanced, personalized, and focused on total athlete wellness. I plan to contribute by promoting safer training methods, encouraging injury prevention, and supporting athletes both physically and mentally. Through education, healthcare, and mentorship, I hope to help shape a future where athletes can achieve success while maintaining long-term health and confidence.
Fire and EMS Academy Scholarship
This scholarship would help me take an important step toward achieving my educational and career goals in the medical and emergency response fields. I plan to pursue a degree in kinesiology or a related pre-medical field with the long-term goal of becoming a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon. I have always been interested in helping people during difficult moments, especially when injuries or emergencies affect their health and confidence. Receiving this scholarship would help reduce the financial stress of college expenses and allow me to focus more on my education, training, and future career development.
My interest in emergency medical services comes from my passion for helping others and staying calm in high-pressure situations. I understand that people working in EMS and fire services play a critical role in saving lives and supporting communities during emergencies. These professionals are often the first people someone sees during a medical crisis, accident, or traumatic event. Their ability to respond quickly, stay focused, and provide care can make a life-changing difference. I admire the courage, discipline, and selflessness required in these careers, and those qualities inspire me in my own path.
I am currently enlisted in the Army Reserve, and that experience has strengthened my leadership, teamwork, and sense of responsibility. Military service has taught me the importance of discipline, remaining calm under pressure, and putting others before yourself. These lessons connect closely with the values needed in EMS and emergency response careers. I believe my experiences in the military will help me succeed in environments that require quick thinking, communication, and dedication to serving others.
Growing up, I also learned resilience from my family. Watching my mother work hard as a single parent taught me perseverance and the importance of supporting others through difficult times. Her determination motivated me to stay focused on my education and future goals even when challenges arise. Those experiences helped shape my desire to pursue a career where I can make a positive impact on people’s lives through healthcare and service.
My long-term goal is to work in healthcare while continuing to serve my community. Whether through EMS experience, military service, or a future career in sports medicine, I want to help people recover physically and emotionally. I am especially interested in helping injured athletes and individuals regain confidence and return to the activities they love. I also hope to mentor younger students and encourage them to pursue careers focused on service and leadership.
This scholarship would not only support my education financially, but it would also motivate me to continue working toward a career centered on helping others. I understand that success in the EMS and healthcare fields requires commitment, compassion, and hard work, and I am prepared to dedicate myself fully to that path. My goal is to use my education, experiences, and passion for service to create a positive impact in my community and make a difference in the lives of others.
SrA Terry (TJ) Sams Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship
The degree I am seeking is in kinesiology or a related pre-medical field because my long-term goal is to become a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon. Over time, I realized that my passion was not only for sports themselves, but also for helping athletes and injured individuals recover and regain confidence in themselves. Pursuing a degree in this field will allow me to combine my interests in science, medicine, and service while building a career that positively impacts others.
My interest in medicine comes from both personal experiences and the people who inspired me growing up. Watching my mother work hard as a single parent taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of helping others during difficult times. Even when life became stressful, she continued to push forward for our family. Her perseverance motivated me to work hard in school and pursue a future where I can support others the same way she supported me. I want to become a healthcare professional who not only treats injuries, but also encourages and supports patients emotionally during recovery.
I am currently enlisted in the Army Reserve, and military service has already had a major impact on my life. Being part of the military has strengthened my leadership skills, discipline, teamwork, and sense of responsibility. It has taught me how important it is to stay calm under pressure and work together toward a common goal. Because of these experiences, I do plan to continue serving in the military while pursuing my education and career goals. I am interested in potentially using my medical training to serve military members and veterans in the future because they often face physical injuries and health challenges that require dedicated care and support.
The military has also shown me the value of sacrifice and service. I understand that pursuing both higher education and military responsibilities will require hard work and commitment, but I believe these experiences will help me grow personally and professionally. The discipline I have learned through military service will continue to help me succeed in college, medical training, and my future career.
After graduation, my goal is to attend medical school and specialize in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery. I want to work with athletes, active individuals, and patients recovering from injuries so I can help them return to doing the activities they love. I am especially interested in helping younger athletes because injuries can affect both physical and mental confidence at an important stage in their lives. I want to be someone who motivates patients and helps them stay hopeful throughout recovery.
In the future, I also hope to give back to my community through mentorship and healthcare outreach programs. Many young people need positive role models and encouragement to believe they can achieve their goals. By sharing my experiences and helping others through medicine, I hope to inspire future students to work hard and pursue meaningful careers. My education, military service, and passion for healthcare are all guiding me toward a future centered on leadership, compassion, and service to others.
Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
Watching people in my community struggle with memory loss and dementia-related illnesses has shown me how deeply these conditions affect not only patients, but also the families who care for them. Alzheimer’s disease slowly changes a person’s ability to remember, communicate, and live independently. While I have not personally cared for someone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I have seen the emotional and physical impact dementia-related illnesses can have on families and communities. These experiences have taught me the importance of patience, compassion, and support for people facing difficult health conditions.
One of the most difficult parts of dementia-related illnesses is watching someone slowly lose pieces of themselves over time. Families often experience sadness, stress, and helplessness as they see loved ones struggle to remember names, conversations, or important moments. Everyday tasks that once seemed simple can become difficult, and family members may need to take on caregiving responsibilities while balancing work, school, and their own personal lives. The emotional toll can affect everyone involved because families not only worry about the health of their loved one, but also about how to provide the best care possible.
These experiences have helped me understand how important healthcare workers and caregivers are in supporting patients and families. Dementia-related illnesses require more than medical treatment alone. Patients need emotional support, understanding, and people who are willing to treat them with dignity and patience. Families also need encouragement and resources to help them manage the stress and responsibilities that come with caregiving. Seeing how much care and compassion are needed has strengthened my desire to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically sports medicine or orthopedic surgery, where I can help improve the lives of others through healthcare.
I have also learned that many communities lack enough education and resources about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Some families may not recognize early signs or may struggle to access proper healthcare and support services. This can make caregiving even more stressful and isolating. I believe communities need stronger support systems, including access to healthcare professionals, mental health resources, caregiver support groups, and educational programs about dementia-related illnesses. Raising awareness can help families feel less alone and encourage earlier treatment and intervention.
Another important lesson I have learned is the value of patience. People with dementia-related illnesses may become frustrated, confused, or withdrawn because they are struggling to understand what is happening around them. Responding with kindness and patience can make a major difference in helping them feel safe and respected. Small actions, such as listening carefully, speaking calmly, and spending time with them, can provide comfort during difficult moments. These experiences have reminded me that healthcare is not only about treating illnesses but also about caring for people emotionally and mentally.
The impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses extends far beyond the patient. Families, caregivers, and entire communities are affected by the emotional, financial, and physical challenges that come with these conditions. Through observing these struggles, I have learned the importance of compassion, resilience, and community support. These lessons continue to inspire my future goals in healthcare because I want to build a career focused on helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. By pursuing a career in medicine, I hope to provide care that not only treats patients physically, but also supports families and improves overall quality of life.
Stephan L. Daniels Lift As We Climb Scholarship
STEM is important to me because it gives people the ability to solve real problems and improve lives through knowledge, innovation, and service. My passion for STEM comes from my interest in sports medicine, health, and the human body. I have always been fascinated by how doctors and medical professionals help injured people recover and regain confidence in themselves. Watching athletes overcome injuries and return stronger inspired me to pursue a career where I could positively impact others every day. I want to use science and medicine not only to build a successful future for myself, but also to uplift the people and communities around me.
My interest in healthcare became even stronger through personal experiences in my family. Growing up, I watched my mother work hard as a single parent to provide for our family, even during stressful and difficult times. Seeing her perseverance taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of supporting others when they need help. Those experiences motivated me to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. STEM is more than a career path to me; it is a way to serve others through education, compassion, and problem-solving.
I plan to pursue a career in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery because I want to help people recover from injuries and return to the activities they love. Injuries can affect people physically, mentally, and emotionally, especially athletes who dedicate years of work to their goals. I want to be someone who helps patients heal while also encouraging them to stay motivated during recovery. My goal is to treat every patient with care, respect, and empathy because healing involves more than just physical treatment.
I also want to use my STEM education to help uplift underserved communities. Many communities face challenges such as limited access to healthcare, mental health resources, and quality education. I believe everyone deserves access to proper medical care and support regardless of their background or financial situation. In the future, I hope to work in communities where healthcare resources may be limited and help provide care to people who need it most. I also want to encourage younger students, especially those from difficult backgrounds, to believe in themselves and pursue careers in STEM fields.
In addition to healthcare, I believe mentorship is an important way to uplift communities. Many young people have talent and potential but lack guidance or positive role models. By sharing my experiences and encouraging others to stay focused on their goals, I hope to inspire students to continue their education and work toward successful futures. My experiences working, balancing responsibilities, and serving in the Army Reserve have taught me discipline, leadership, and perseverance, which I will carry with me throughout my career.
Pursuing a STEM degree is not only about personal success for me. It is about using my education, skills, and experiences to improve lives and create opportunities for others. Through healthcare, mentorship, and community service, I hope to make a lasting impact and help build stronger, healthier communities for future generations.

WinnerService, sacrifice, and bravery are values that have strongly shaped my personal journey, goals, and the way I view my responsibilities to others. Growing up, I learned these values through my family experiences and through my decision to join the Army Reserve. Watching my mother work hard as a single parent taught me the meaning of sacrifice from a young age. Even during stressful times, she continued to provide for our family and encourage me to stay focused on my future. Seeing her perseverance inspired me to become disciplined, responsible, and determined to create a better future for myself and those around me. Her example showed me that bravery is not always loud or dramatic; sometimes it is simply continuing to move forward despite challenges.
Joining the Army Reserve strengthened these values even more. Military service requires teamwork, discipline, courage, and commitment to something greater than yourself. Through my experiences, I learned how important it is to remain calm under pressure, support the people around you, and stay focused during difficult situations. These lessons have influenced the way I approach school, work, and my future career goals. Service has become more than an idea I admire; it has become a part of my identity and the type of person I want to be.
Sgt. Albert Dono Ware’s legacy reflects the importance of using courage and sacrifice to uplift others. His story inspires me to think about how I can contribute to improving the lives of people in my own community. One of the biggest challenges facing the African diaspora in the United States today is unequal access to opportunities. Many communities continue to experience barriers in education, healthcare, employment, and mental health support. These issues can limit opportunities for young people and create cycles of hardship that are difficult to escape.
As someone who hopes to pursue a career in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery, I believe healthcare reform is one of the most important areas where change is needed. Many underserved communities do not have access to quality healthcare, mental health resources, or preventative care. Expanding affordable healthcare programs and increasing medical resources in underserved neighborhoods could improve countless lives. Mental health services are especially important because many families face stress, anxiety, trauma, and financial struggles without proper support systems. I believe healthcare professionals should focus not only on treating injuries and illnesses, but also on building trust and supporting patients emotionally.
Education reform is also critical. Schools in underserved communities need better funding, updated technology, mentorship programs, and stronger career preparation opportunities. Many students have talent and potential but lack the resources or guidance needed to reach their goals. Mentorship programs, scholarships, internships, and after-school activities can help students build confidence and stay motivated toward success.
Creating meaningful change requires teamwork from many groups. Government leaders, educators, healthcare workers, businesses, community organizations, and families all play important roles in improving opportunities for future generations. Community leaders understand local challenges, while educators and mentors help young people develop confidence and direction. Healthcare professionals can advocate for equal access to care and healthier communities.
The values of service, sacrifice, and bravery continue to guide my life and future goals. I want to build a career that allows me to help people heal, support underserved communities, and inspire others to overcome challenges. Through healthcare, mentorship, and service, I hope to create a positive impact that extends beyond myself and helps future generations succeed.

Growing up, I learned the importance of hard work, resilience, and staying focused on my goals. My family dynamic has shaped who I am today and motivated me to work toward a better future. My mother has been one of the biggest influences in my life. As a single parent, she has worked hard to provide for our family even during difficult times. There were moments when stress and anxiety made life challenging for her, but she continued to push forward for the people she loved. Watching her determination taught me the value of perseverance and responsibility. It also inspired me to become someone who can support and help others in meaningful ways.
I have always tried to stay motivated in school and focus on building a successful future for myself. Education is important to me because I see it as a path toward creating opportunities and making a difference in my community. While balancing school responsibilities, I also worked at Culver’s from June 2025 to November 2025. Working there helped me develop strong communication, teamwork, and time management skills. It taught me how to stay disciplined and responsible while handling multiple responsibilities at once. Those experiences helped me mature and better understand the value of commitment and consistency.
One of my biggest passions is sports medicine and orthopedic care. I have always enjoyed sports and admired how healthcare professionals help athletes and injured individuals recover. Seeing how injuries can affect a person physically and mentally inspired me to pursue a career where I can help people heal and regain confidence in themselves. My goal is to become a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon so I can positively impact people’s lives through healthcare. I want to help patients recover from injuries, return to the activities they love, and feel supported throughout their recovery process.
In addition to my educational goals, I am also enlisted in the Army Reserve. Being part of the military has strengthened my discipline, leadership, and sense of responsibility. It has taught me the importance of teamwork, commitment, and serving others. These lessons will continue to help me throughout my education and future career in medicine.
Looking ahead, I plan to attend college and continue pursuing my path toward the medical field. I know the journey will require years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, but I am prepared to stay focused on my goals. I want to use my education and experiences to create a positive impact on others, especially people who may be facing difficult circumstances. My family’s struggles, my work experiences, and my ambitions have all shaped me into someone determined to succeed and give back to others. Through perseverance and education, I hope to build a future where I can support my family, serve my community, and make a lasting difference in people’s lives.

Ever since I was young, I have been inspired by the idea of helping people recover from injuries and regain confidence in themselves. My interest in the medical field grew through my love for sports and my curiosity about how the human body heals. Watching athletes overcome injuries and return stronger motivated me to pursue a career where I could make that kind of impact on others. Over time, I realized that medicine is more than just treating injuries; it is about giving people hope, support, and the opportunity to continue living their lives to the fullest.
One of the biggest inspirations in my life has been my mother. As a single parent, she worked hard to provide for our family even during difficult times. There were moments when stress and anxiety made everyday life challenging for her, but she still continued to push forward for the people she loved. Watching her perseverance taught me the importance of compassion, resilience, and caring for others. It also showed me how valuable support can be during hard situations. Those experiences helped shape my desire to enter the medical field because I want to be someone who helps people during some of the toughest moments of their lives.
My passion specifically lies in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. I have always enjoyed sports, but I also understand how injuries can affect both physical and mental health. Athletes and active individuals often dedicate years of hard work to their goals, and an injury can suddenly take that away. I want to help people recover, rebuild confidence, and return to doing what they love. Whether it is helping a student athlete recover from a torn ligament or assisting someone with chronic pain, I want my career to have a meaningful and lasting impact.
I also believe the medical field requires patience, discipline, and teamwork. While working at Culver’s, I learned how important communication and responsibility are in a fast-paced environment. Balancing work, school, and personal responsibilities taught me time management and perseverance. These experiences helped prepare me for the demanding path of medicine because I understand that success requires dedication and consistency.
In the future, I plan to make a difference by treating every patient with care, respect, and empathy. I want people to feel heard and supported, not just medically but emotionally as well. My goal is to create a positive impact through healing and encouragement. I also hope to inspire younger students who may come from difficult situations to believe they can achieve their goals through hard work and determination.
Pursuing a career in the medical field is not only about achieving personal success for me; it is about using my skills and education to improve the lives of others. By combining my passion for sports, my desire to help people, and the lessons I have learned through life experiences, I hope to build a career that truly makes a difference in my community and beyond.

My faith has always been a guiding force in my life, especially during difficult moments. It reminds me to stay hopeful, treat others with kindness, and value every human life. I actively live out my faith by supporting and encouraging people around me, helping others when they are struggling, and trying to be someone others can rely on. I believe every person has value and purpose, no matter their stage in life or circumstances. My faith has taught me that protecting and respecting life is not only about words, but also about actions and compassion shown every day.
One experience that strengthened my faith happened while watching my mother work hard to support our family as a single parent. There were times when stress and anxiety made daily life difficult for her, but she continued to push forward for our family. Seeing her perseverance taught me the importance of faith, strength, and caring for others even when life becomes challenging. It also showed me how important support and encouragement can be during hard times. Because of this, I learned to appreciate life more deeply and understand that everyone deserves compassion and care.
My faith has also strongly influenced my future goals and career path. I plan to pursue a career in sports medicine or orthopedic surgery because I want to help people recover from injuries and regain confidence in themselves. I have always been interested in sports and health, but my faith gave me a deeper reason for choosing this path. I believe helping people heal physically and emotionally is one of the best ways I can serve others. Whether it is helping an athlete recover after a serious injury or supporting someone through pain and rehabilitation, I want my work to positively impact lives.
I also believe that protecting life means supporting people through every stage of their journey. Injuries, illnesses, and emotional struggles can make people feel hopeless, but healthcare professionals have the ability to bring comfort and healing. My faith encourages me to treat every patient with dignity, patience, and respect. I want people to feel cared for, not just medically, but personally as well.
Education will help me turn these values into action. Through college and medical training, I will gain the knowledge and skills needed to help others recover and live healthier lives. I plan to use my education to advocate for patient care, encourage healthy lifestyles, and support people who are going through difficult situations. My goal is not only to become successful in my career, but also to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. By combining my faith, education, and passion for helping people, I hope to protect and value life through both my actions and my future profession.

My career goal is to become a sports medicine physician or orthopedic surgeon so I can help athletes and injured people recover and return to doing what they love. I have always been interested in sports, health, and helping others heal from injuries. Growing up, I realized how important doctors are in helping people regain confidence after injuries. I want to build a career where I can combine my passion for sports with my desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Playing chess has taught me many lessons that will help me achieve these goals, especially patience, discipline, and critical thinking.
One important lesson I learned from chess came during a tournament game at my school. Early in the match, I lost my queen because I moved too quickly without thinking about my opponent’s strategy. At first, I thought the game was over. Most players see losing the queen as the end because it is the most powerful piece on the board. I became frustrated and wanted to give up, but instead I decided to stay calm and focus on the next move instead of my mistake.
As the game continued, I carefully studied the board and started planning ahead. I stopped rushing and began thinking about how each piece could work together. I used my smaller pieces to defend my king and slowly create opportunities. Eventually, my opponent became overconfident and made mistakes because he thought he had already won. By staying patient and focused, I was able to trap his king and win the game in the final moments. That experience showed me that success is not about avoiding mistakes completely, but about learning how to recover from them and keep moving forward.
This lesson connects strongly to my future career goals. In medicine, especially sports medicine, doctors face difficult situations every day. Patients may have serious injuries, long recovery periods, or emotional struggles. Just like in chess, doctors must stay calm under pressure, think carefully, and make smart decisions step by step. One mistake cannot define the outcome if you remain focused and determined to improve the situation.
Chess has also taught me discipline and preparation. Every move matters, just like every decision in healthcare matters. To become a successful physician, I know I will need years of education, training, and hard work. The lessons I learned through chess have prepared me to face challenges with patience, confidence, and determination. These skills will help me achieve my career goals and positively impact the lives of others.

Growing up, I learned early that life is not always easy, but struggles can shape a person into someone stronger and more determined. I was raised by a single mother who has worked hard to provide for our family while also dealing with anxiety. There were times when her anxiety made it difficult for her to go to work, and seeing her push through those challenges taught me the importance of resilience, responsibility, and perseverance. Watching her continue to fight for our future inspired me to work hard toward my own goals and never give up, even when life becomes difficult.
Education has become one of the most important parts of my journey because I see it as a path toward creating a better future for myself and my family. I plan to pursue a career in sports medicine or orthopedics because I want to help athletes and others recover from injuries and return to doing what they love. Sports have always been important to me, and although I may not play professionally, I realized I could still make an impact by helping others perform at their best and recover physically after injuries. I am especially interested in helping people heal and regain confidence after setbacks.

I worked at Culver’s from June 2025 to November 2025, where I learned how to communicate with customers, stay calm under pressure, and balance responsibilities. These experiences have shaped me into someone who understands the value of hard work and dedication.
One of my weaknesses is that I sometimes put too much pressure on myself because I want to succeed and support those around me. However, I have learned that growth comes from challenges and mistakes. Instead of giving up when things become difficult, I use those moments as motivation to improve myself. I believe every obstacle has taught me patience, perseverance, and determination.
