My name is Dereon Williams, and I firmly believe that everything I’ve learned in high school, from my involvement in JROTC to my hobby of landscaping, will help me make a difference in my community and the world after college. As I pursue my degree in Computer Science at Alabama State University, I’m excited to combine my passion for technology with my commitment to service. My goal is not just to secure a great career but also to create a positive and lasting impact wherever I go. Throughout my time in the JROTC program at Westlake High School, I’ve had numerous opportunities to volunteer and serve others. Whether it was organizing clean-up events at local parks, reading to elementary school students, or assisting with special events for the special education program, I’ve always felt that helping others was an essential part of who I am. In particular, volunteering through JROTC has taught me the importance of leadership, responsibility, and selflessness—traits that I plan to continue to develop in college and beyond. One of the most impactful ways I believe I can contribute to my community and the world after college is by using my technical skills and computer science knowledge to solve real-world problems. Technology has the power to change lives, and I am determined to use it for good. For instance, by developing software or applications that help non-profit organizations organize volunteer efforts or raise awareness about local issues, I can amplify the good that others are already doing. I could create platforms that connect people with opportunities to volunteer, donate, or support causes they care about. This could be especially helpful in communities where access to information about volunteer opportunities is limited, or where certain groups of people are underrepresented in volunteer efforts. In addition to my passion for technology, I’ve always had a love for landscaping. I find peace and satisfaction in working with nature, whether it’s planting flowers, trimming hedges, or creating beautiful outdoor spaces. While landscaping may seem like a small hobby, I see it as a way to improve my community on a very tangible level. After college, I want to use my landscaping skills to beautify public spaces, schools, or areas in need of revitalization. Clean and well-maintained outdoor spaces are proven to improve the mental and physical well-being of individuals and communities, and I want to contribute to that in any way I can. By combining my interest in landscaping with my computer science knowledge, I could also explore the intersection of technology and nature. I could develop smart systems that help maintain and monitor public parks or create applications that teach people how to improve their own yards or community gardens. In today’s world, where environmental sustainability is more critical than ever, I believe technology can be a powerful tool in preserving and enhancing the natural world around us. Whether it’s through smart irrigation systems or using data to improve green spaces, I want to bring my unique skills to the table and make a meaningful contribution. Ultimately, my goal is to leave the world better than I found it. I want to use my education in computer science to create innovative solutions that address community challenges and leverage my hobby of landscaping to beautify public spaces and promote well-being. The combination of service, technology, and creativity is my path forward, and I am determined to use everything I’ve learned to make a lasting impact on the world.

Music has been my lifeline throughout high school, guiding me through every up and down, every challenge and triumph. It’s not just a hobby or a background noise in my life—it’s been the thread that has kept me grounded, focused, and sane. Every time life felt overwhelming, music was there. Whether I was struggling with schoolwork, navigating personal challenges, or celebrating good times with friends, music always had a way of making everything better. It’s been my escape, my therapy, and my voice all at once. Looking back, I can see how much music has shaped my high school experience and expanded my understanding of what music truly is. It’s not just about listening to catchy songs; it’s about feeling the rhythm, understanding the depth, and connecting with the emotions behind every note. My appreciation for different genres has grown immensely over the years. What started as a simple love for one style of music transformed into a deeper curiosity about the endless possibilities that music has to offer. Last year, during my junior year, I decided to fully immerse myself in music. I joined the marching band, symphonic band, and even the jazz band. It was a decision that changed everything for me. I was exposed to new instruments, new sounds, and new experiences that I’d never thought possible. I wasn’t just a passive listener anymore; I became an active participant in the music world. It opened up my perspective and gave me a new appreciation for the complexity and beauty of music. But I didn’t stop there. I went even further by starting to produce my own music. The feeling of creating something from scratch, of taking an idea and turning it into a tangible song, was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Music became my personal form of self-expression, and it gave me the freedom to pour my emotions, thoughts, and creativity into something that was uniquely mine. It helped me stay calm during the most chaotic moments and allowed me to express myself in ways words alone couldn’t. As I’ve explored more artists and their work, I’ve found even more inspiration. SZA, Daniel Caesar, Destin Conrad, Trippie Redd, Teddy Swims, and Sam Smith have all become part of my top six artists. Their ability to express themselves so vulnerably and authentically through their music inspired me to do the same. If they could lay their souls bare through their songs, why couldn’t I? Music became more than just something I listened to—it became a language I could speak, a canvas I could paint, and a reflection of who I am. Through music, I’ve found my voice. It’s helped me discover who I am, how I feel, and how to express it all. High school wouldn’t have been the same without it, and I’m grateful for the way it’s transformed me.

My name is Dereon Williams, and I am a proud senior at Westlake High School in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve always had big dreams for my future, and one of my main goals right now is to elevate my GPA. I know that raising my GPA will unlock more opportunities for scholarships and make me a more competitive candidate for college admissions. Achieving this academic goal is critical because I want to set myself up for success and make my dreams a reality. Speaking of college, my ultimate goal is to attend Alabama State University and major in Computer Science. Technology has always fascinated me, and I’m eager to dive into the world of computer programming, artificial intelligence, and data science. The field of Computer Science is incredibly vast, and I know it will offer endless opportunities to grow and innovate. One day, I hope to use my degree to work in the Air Force, where I can apply my technical skills in a meaningful way to support our country. Another dream I have is to work for Microsoft, a company I admire deeply. Their cutting-edge technology and the impact they’ve had on the world have inspired me to pursue a career where I can contribute to something truly global and transformative. While academics and professional goals are important to me, I also believe in giving back to my community. Over the years, I have taken every opportunity to serve others and make a positive impact on the lives of those around me. One of the ways I’ve given back is by donating canned food, clothing, and hygiene supplies to local shelters. I know how much of a difference even the smallest donation can make, and it’s something I take great pride in. In addition to this, I’ve been actively involved in my JROTC program, where I’ve participated in various volunteer activities. One of the most fulfilling experiences has been reading to elementary school students. I’ve seen the joy on their faces when I take the time to connect with them, and it reminds me of the importance of being a positive role model for the next generation. Another memorable project we organized was an inclusion game for the special education program at our school. We held basketball games, baseball games, and field days, where students of all abilities were able to come together and have fun. It was an incredibly powerful experience that reinforced the idea that everyone, no matter their differences, deserves to be treated with respect and inclusion. Beyond school, my JROTC group and I have also helped clean up stadiums and the school parking lot after sports games. We’ve even organized clean-up events at nearby parks. These efforts have made me realize just how important it is to take care of the spaces we share and to show up for our communities when they need us. All these experiences have inspired me to do more. Every time I give back, I feel a sense of fulfillment that drives me to keep going. It’s not just about the good I can do for others—it’s about the good that comes back to me in ways I can’t always predict. The more I help others, the more I see the beauty of collective kindness and how it can change lives. I’ve learned that even the smallest actions can make a world of difference, and that’s something I’ll carry with me throughout my life.

My name is Dereon Williams, and I am a proud senior at Westlake High School, where I have had the honor of being a part of the Army JROTC program for the past three years. Being in JROTC has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school career, and I’ve poured my heart and soul into it. Through this program, I’ve not only gained invaluable leadership skills and discipline, but I’ve also had the opportunity to make a real difference in my school and community. If you ask me, JROTC has shaped me into the person I am today, and I’ve been fortunate to take part in some incredible activities and projects that have helped those around me. One of the most meaningful contributions I’ve made through JROTC is the volunteer work I’ve done. I’ve been actively involved in numerous community service events, always ready to lend a hand and give back. After football games, I’ve joined my fellow cadets in cleaning up the stadium, ensuring that it remains in top condition for future events. But we didn’t stop there; we also dedicated time to cleaning up local parks and neighborhoods, making sure our environment is as clean and safe as possible for everyone. It’s not just about picking up trash—it’s about showing pride in our community and helping to maintain it for future generations. We understand that our efforts, no matter how small, have a ripple effect. One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had was during our field trips to elementary and middle schools. We would visit these schools to read to children and help them with their homework. It wasn’t just about academic assistance—it was about building connections with these young minds and showing them that there are positive role models out there who care about their success. Being able to provide guidance and support to these students was an unforgettable experience, and I always left feeling that I had truly made a difference in their lives. In addition to academic support, we also held inclusion games for the special education program. These games were nothing short of inspiring. We organized basketball games, baseball games, and even a field day, where students with special needs could participate and feel valued. It was amazing to see how these activities brought everyone together, fostering an environment of inclusivity and mutual respect. The smiles on the students' faces were all the reward I needed. Beyond these events, our JROTC program also reaches out to help those in need. We’ve volunteered at nearby shelters, donating canned food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and even toys for children during the holidays. Every time I participated in these charitable drives, I was reminded of how fortunate I am, and I became more determined to continue serving others whenever possible. Through my time in JROTC, I’ve not only gained leadership skills and discipline, but I’ve also learned the importance of community, kindness, and giving back. The experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve helped have shaped my character and have inspired me to continue making a difference in the world. JROTC has taught me that leadership is not just about commanding others; it’s about serving, supporting, and uplifting those around you. And that’s exactly what I intend to do for the rest of my life.
